With 2011 in books, it’s time for the ‘Tentative Top 10′ for 2012

You asked for it, so here it is — the top college football prospects for 2012.

Well, at least, the top ones according to me. For now.

I call it “The Tentative Top 10.” The reason is I call it that is because, well, let’s face it, it’s February. The ink is still wet on 2011 letters-of-intent and the 2012 football season won’t start for six months. As ever, these things are educated guesses at best based on combine results, all-star performances, highlight video, game experience and reputation. So it’s far from scientific.

I produced my first “Tentative Top 10″ last year. I found it interesting to go back and I think you will, too.

For this year’s list I turned to a couple of foot soldiers in the business of recruiting analysis. Chad Simmons of Scout.com/FoxSports.com and Rusty Mansell of 247Sports.com burn up the state’s roads meeting and evaluating not only 2012 kids but also 2013 and 2014 and beyond. Both of them conduct camps and combines and are intimately involved in all-star game selections and the actual rating of college football prospects. There are guys I know and trust, so I consulted them both and heavily considered their opinions.

As always, there were very difficult choices to make to arrive at the ridiculously low number of only 10 players. When it came to two prospects being very close in ability, I tended to err on the side of Metro Atlantans. But as you’ll note talent from all over the state is represented here.

Meanwhile, the next 10 guys that were left off this list could probably compete with the Tentative Top 10 players in any kind of football competition. As always, it’s shaping up to be another strong year for football talent in Georgia. We’ve had 183 players sign scholarships to play FBS (formerly Division I) football in 2011 so far and I bet we have that many next year as well.

So there’s a bunch of awesome players that didn’t make the list. But they’ll be well represented on future lists and certainly when it comes to sign college scholarships. After all, National Signing Day 2012 is only 357 days away!

Without further ado, I give you . . .

THE TENTATIVE TOP 10 FOR 2012

  • 1. DE/OLB Jordan Jenkins (6-3, 233), Harris County
  • 2. CB Geno Smith (6-0, 165), St. Pius
  • 3. OT Vadal Alexander (6-6, 310), Buford
  • 4. DT Jonathan Taylor (6-4, 315), Jenkins County
  • 5. ATH Ricky Parks (6-3, 210), Callaway
  • 6. RB Kenyan Drake (6-0, 180), Hillgrove
  • 7. OLB Josh Clemons (6-5, 200), Lowndes
  • 8. CB Deion Bonner (5-11, 185), Carver-Columbus
  • 9. QB Greyson Lambert (6-5, 195), Wayne County
  • 10. DE Jordan Watkins (6-5, 260), Woodward Academy

ADDENDUM: Some others that were given long and hard consideration to be on this list include Pepperell’s Dakota Ball (Alabama commitment), Norcross’ Jason Croom, North Hall’s Imani Cross and C.J. Curry (UGA commitment), Banneker’s Chaz Elder, Dodge County’s Leonard Floyd, Buford’s Dillon Lee, Banneker’s Larry Jefferson, Carrollton’s Jonathan Jones and Sandy Creek’s Quinteze Williams, among others. Any one of those guys — and many more — could be among the players selected for the annual AJC Super 11 team in August.

Sometime between now and then I plan to produce a preseason AJC Fab 50 list for the Class of 2012. But for now this will have to do.

I know I don’t have to ask but let me know what you think. Who’s not represented here who absolutely should be and why? It is, after all, “The Tentative 10.”

With all due respect Chip,

Would you mind taking a break until the conclusion of Spring Practices?? My head still hurts from the drama filled prima donnas of the 2011 class, and I think we could all pretend recruiting does not exist until we get bored near the end of Spring/Early Summer.

Thanks!

Good list, what are the chances that UGA can sign 70% of the names listed. I know couple of must gets will be Vadal Alexander, Jordan Jenkins and Parks.

What UGA will need more than anything next year is LBers and WRs’. Good thing they started early with CJ Curry. Need a couple more like him.

They could also use another RB if Crowell bust or gets injured. If not Kenyan Drake than hopefully Matt Jones from Florida or Keith Marshall from NC.

haha nice tie but it put you FIRST so i guess you win… but to the subject Chip i not saying he should be on the list but what about Amba Etta- Tawo from McEachern??? He has great size (6′3 and about 180) can catch the ball and is really good at route running… Just curious of where you would put him on the states list?

Sorry bigdawg but AJ Green ran faster than a 4.7 40. Being the best player on a terrible team in an awful region does not make him a Top 10 in Georgia or even close to worthy of it. We are talking elite players here.

@ naganole or nagadawg, (How much longer do you have?) I think you’re spot on with your early predictions on those 3. I would also say that Lambert will end up at Bama, and I have a good feeling Taylor ends up a Dawg. Lambert’s family (Dad in particular) with Bama ties. Taylor said he will go through the process, but seems to have Georgia thoughts. Leonard Floyd may be as good as any player on this list, and I’m curious to see who gets in to Dodge County and gets that signature.

Especially to a tech whiner, because unfortunately for you guys none of the recruits will even consider that joke over on North Ave… Maybe when Chip does another “Fab 50″ you might have a couple out of those players to consider your crappy team.. but don’t fret, I’m sure tech will yet again “get the players they want ” lol and the moral victories will be passed around like a yellow wig-wearing sissy in a tickle pile..

problem I have with this game and pronouncing kids as the top 10 is there will be another 10 rising seniors who are late bloomers or behind a senior last season that will come from nowhere and are just as good as these 10. These kids are the ones that went to combines and are known about. Thats all, that why we have so mnay kids wind up at small schools make it to the NFL cause real football people find them not a bunch of recruiting services trying to make money.

Huh?

Funny when someone comes on and complains about the folks who rush to claim 1st post. Its always a complaint like they wasted there time having to read such nonsense but the person who complains rarely adds anything to the conversation themselves. So Don Keeballz thanks for your also very informative post. I feel smarter for having read it.

Chewyandrw: Agree with you. Just because he racked up some good stats against bad competition is not elite. (41 catches, 517 yards, 1,142 all-purpose yards). He will probably sign with West Georgia.

If cj Curry of North Hall is a top 20, then I’m crazy.
He’s very lucky UGA made the early offer so he could commit.
The guy is simply an average football player.

Chip gets a list of who Georgia would lik to sign, most of the players end up making the top 50 list, then you guys think you have a great recruiting class, but you still end up 8-5 finishing behind Alabama, FLA, AU, LSU ,every single year,….it’s actually kind of funny to sit back and watch.

UGA fans do not have to worry. All the talk and conspiracies against Auburn all have been proven non stories and lies, therefore we will come back to the state of Georgia and cherry pick all the players we want and leave the scrubs to UGA and our little sisters in west alabama the ones we do not want.

We own Georgia, the recruits in Georgia, the recruits in Alabama and the Bams.

Get used to it, we win Richt loses again and gets fired. Not one of your signees will. Make a big imct.

What will your 2012 motto be? NEW COACH NEW DREAM TEAM.

They will be playing for a different coach in 2012
They will never beat Florida
Bama would use them as scrubs for the real players

That about do it?

Win at Auburn, you are delusional. UGA has always outrecruited your pathetic program, even after you won a championship with 2 thugs that were kicked out of other schools. You clowns barely beat UGA with these thugs when UGA had it’s worst team in 25 years. UGA owns you clowns, how does 4 out of 5 sound to you? Get accustomed to it, 5 out of 6 is coming in athens this year. You losers wouldn’t have lost 6 games without SCAMCAM!!. Maybe you should go to a Bama blog. and brag, since you guys do beat those clowns every other year. To come on a blog. of a home state team that has soundly beaten your program 4 out of the last 5 years shows your ignorance, but i forgot you are part of the loving family led by the most ignorant of all coaches Cheesestick and the moron asst. coach that wears his cap on backwards like a teenager.

@Conley…I agree that Lambert will probably end up at Bama; can’t see him wanting to sit behind Murray and LeMay. I heard that Georgia is making a hard run on that Prinze kid out of Kentucky for ‘13, but so is every other school in the country. Have you seen that Drake kid play? I have started to hear some noise about him, but don’t know much. I’m guessing that we will take two RB’s next year, your thoughts?
