Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson comments on 2011 recruiting class

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson briefly addressed this year’s recruiting class around lunch on Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets signed 22 players, the ACC school’s largest group of prospects since 2004. Here are a couple of things that Johnson had to say:

“I think we addressed our needs and signed a very balanced, talented group. We are excited about this class and feel like we have a number of players who are not only quality players, but quality young men as well.”

“I thought our staff did a nice job working this year to put together a class we feel really good about.”

Johnson will talk more about Georgia Tech football recruiting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Sounds like a typical PR statement to me. He’s saying everything is fine yet they lost a ton of possible players. Go dawgs !

He then added,

“I continue to give Coach Groh nothing to work with on the defensive side of the ball. I figure he’ll either coach em’ up or quit. Either way my Offense can’t be stopped, not even on 4th and medium. We will continue to outscore everyone….No questions.”

Yeah, what else is he going to say? “We fell flat on our face, couldn’t close on anybody we wanted, and couldn’t keep several guys on board. Maybe next year…”

Recruiting class rankings are “over rated”!! Texas, UGA, Iowa, Notre Dame, and Florida come to mind from last year. Arrests, grades, injuries, home sick, quitting, finances, and life itself just make thinks change quickly for a football signee. And remember, the scholarship is not a 5 year deal. Under current rules, the coach can withdraw a scholarship at any time if the player is not good enough. See USA Today this week. Good luck, all you signees, and have some fun out there. Get that diploma…

hopefully he and the staff will go back and address the problems we had late in recruiting and find a fix. this is a good class of players but i have to say that we should’ve gotten a little more. we really need some more depth on the DL. hopefully some of these kids we took a chance on will turn out to be diamonds in the rough. either way, i will be there on the Flats to cheer them on to success…

I love the way this entire group went about their business. All signed within two hours (one sent his in too early), no fanfare, no press, no party, just took care of business. Everything I have read about this group points to all being team players, big and fast, hard nosed, and athletic as well as all being great students. This type of character builds great disciplined teams with no off field issues or classroom issues. Great class.

Blah blah blah, Stephon Tuitt broke my heart. Let’s spin “balance” as a word for “mediocre” with no standout performers.

Chip,
I know you are busy just wondering if you or anybody else can answer this. Does GT still have offers out to Keifer and Battle? Just wondering since there are still spots left and I personally don’t think either of these are wasted offers.

“The Yellow Jackets signed 22 players, the ACC school’s largest group of prospects since 2004. ”

Why haven’t we signed 25 a year? Or 40 like Ole Miss.

This may be a great group of guys but I don’t see them winning anything of note. Yeah UGA has a nice class but I don’t really care about them. Have you seen the classes FSU, UNC, and Clemson put together? Sickening how much talent there was in Georgia this year. We got next to none of it.

Tech got a solid class in my oppinion…..one to fill their needs and thats whats important….Did anyone hear the interview on 790 this morn w/ coach Probst at Colquit County though…….Without mentioning names he was blasting CPJ on his stand of dropping schollies after commitments…….Tech people, word gets around in the HS coaching circle and I think CPJ is going to have a hard time getting his foot in the door to the tallent in this state if he does’nt chance his policies………Go Dawgs

Looks like a solid, but not stellar, class that was our second best in 10 years.

A couple of players picked us over ND and Stanford and we lost a couple to those schools too (but not at the same “star” status”). I just wished Tre Jackson would have stuck with us. We could use more NT prospects.

oh poor Russell. Vad Lee performer but a wait and see as all QBs are. Days will make an impact. Joe and Braun are both underrated stated by more than one source. Waller, Snoody, Noble and Milton will be impact players with time. Greene may well start as a freshman and his numbers were hurt by a broken hand so he was looked over by many. The entire LB group looks good and will add needed depth with some potentiol playmakers. Yes the D-line recruiting could have been better but not a big loss as three good DL prospects redshirted last year and two are reported to look like beasts now. All and all with the season GT had and the bad press all the time I am happy with who signed and welcome them all to the flats.

This recruiting class sucks!!

Very nice class. Can’t wait to see how Vad Lee develops. Stop crying about the number of stars recruits have as that is way overrated. 1/2 of UGA’s “big stars” will either flunk out of school, or go to jail. BL is they must have character, smarts, and fit into your system to have success.

1techr,
Clemson signs well every year though this was a really good class for them and Dabo is promising these kids the world as his job is on the line. FSU will always and has always recruited well. UNC is the only surprise to me, yes Butch Davis is a great coach and has been steadily building recruits there but how he fooled these kids with the NCAA looming is beyond me. Unless you can somehow convince the powers to be to add some different majors good luck getting some of these other kids.

CPJ Fan,

We didn’t sign more because we weren’t allowed to. Under Dave Braine, the worst athletic director of all time, we had academically ineligible players playing and got put on probation for it. The first academic scandal in school history. He didn’t allow the coaches to keep up with player’s attendance and progress in classes. Brilliant right? This also came from the guy that signed a life-time contract to freaking Paul Hewitt and that renewed Chan Gailey’s contract because we beat Miami in ‘05, after calls for him to go had been going on for a while. After the academic thing, he pretty much was forced to step down.

We just got off probation in Johnson’s second year I believe, and can now have full classes.

CPJ Fan, we don’t oversign because we aren’t a scumbag school like Ole Miss (or most of the SEC schools). And we don’t recruit guys that are borderline academic qualifiers, so there isn’t a chance that the ones we sign won’t be able to get in.
Before you woofin dawgs start in, we will definitely take on some guys that are minimum qualifiers, but not a lot.

Dawg fans all excited, think THIS year will be the year. A month ago their lack of coaching was the problem, but now UGA is back! Also, claiming not to be interested in Tech, yet probably know more about Tech recruits than most Tech fans. Yes, it must be early February. Some people never learn. You just finished 6-7 with 4 top ten classes, plus a significant percentage of your guys won’t qualify.

Ask UGA coaches if they enjoy having to carve out time in each of the regular season practices to prep for GT’s option attack. I have to believe it’s quite a distraction from their goal of preparing for SEC games.

A tragic failure for us, compared to UGA. Richt saved his bacon by getting all the big stars. Tech got nobody that anyone else in the bigtime wanted. One more year for Johnson. Terrible job last season, terrible recruiting. I am sick. We got so close to UGA for a while there, but now they are leaving us in the dust.

nodawgsallowed,
Demon, Snoody, or Milton have the potentiol to be great kick/punt returners and Greene is way underrated. I think between the last three classes a solid team can be built. If CPJ and staff can get back to an 8-4 or 9-3 type season this year next year will be a lot better for you guys that like all the numbers. Several good kids have been coming by the campus and GT just has to hold thier attention.

TALK IS CHEAP. How ’bout all you Tech and UGA “fans” stop flapping your lips and renew your season tickets?

We’ll have something to talk about come September when the games are on. As for recruits, the upper echelon teams rarely play true freshmen.

Both CPJ and CMR have something to prove in 2011. Should be interesting…

“Good young men” don’t win football games I’m sorry to say. “Nice jobs” by the coaches don’t mean anything. PJ forgets this is big time college football and not GA Southern. I can see getting some “system” guys on offense but what is the excuse for not landing a single four or five star recruit on defense? Georgia Tech is striving to become Wake Forest. I also am sick.

We own you @1:53pm – your comments are indicative of too many UGA bloggers, i.e. you are in the SEC but your total focus is how many times you can beat Ga Tech! Maybe you should be more concerned with Florida, Auburn, SC, Alabama, etc. As for me, I hope UGA wins every game but one every year. And if Ga Tech can win the ACC and go to a BCS Bowl on a regular basis, I’m happy!

Going through the list and analysis of these guys, we got a monster load of LBs with wide ranging abilities and good talent. Al Groh should have no excuses going forward. I’m a little less enthused about the other side of the ball, got some interesting linemen and Vad Lee looks like a keeper but when are we going to get some decent WRs to open up the passing game with. Does no good to have a Lee or Nesbitt tossing bombs over defenses if all it does is fall through the hands of our awful WR corp.

Jacket21,
Watch Greene’s film the kid can play and already has decent size to go with speed. Moore is also reportedly looking good once he got past his injury that left him out last year. Other positive O. Smith has proven he can catch and Bostic is suppose to have great hands and that will open up passing with two good a-backs. Milton could also move to WR he may not have the height 6′00 but that has been proven a none factor in the past with the right skill set.

Ramblin Man

I would also point out that I know we fans are all excited to get Vad Lee but I think Synjyn is going to really surprise some people. The 0-line is unfortunately another big question with only two returning starters from last year only thank god the back ups got a good amount of reps last year and Bailey will be coming off his red shirt. Until the line is stable you can forget about the passing game if the QB has to run for his life all the time.
