Ex-Georgia Tech recruit Tre Jackson signs with Florida State over UGA, others (UPDATED)

Former Georgia Tech commitment Tre Jackson went with the school on Wednesday that caused the Yellow Jackets to drop their football scholarship offer.

The Wayne County offensive lineman signed with Florida State over North Carolina State, while also considering offers from Georgia, Alabama and Miami.

It was the final act in arguably state’s No. 1 recruiting soap opera over the last week. Until a week ago, Jackson was a longtime commitment to Georgia Tech.

“He feels really good to get everything over with — he’s smiling again,” Wayne County coach Jody Grooms said. “It’s really good to see him smiling again and happy.”

Last week, Georgia Tech became concerned when it failed make contact with Jackson for several days — never a good sign so close to signing day. They had heard rumors about last-minute flirtations between Jackson and Florida State and N.C. State.

When Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson finally talked with Grooms last Thursday, it was revealed that Jackson agreed to take an official visit to FSU on the final recruiting weekend. Even though Jackson was still committed to the Yellow Jackets, both sides agreed to part ways.

Historically, Johnson has had a policy of rescinding scholarships of Georgia Tech commitments who visit other schools after they pledge to the Yellow Jackets.

“When you deal with recruiting, there are a lot of people with their hands in the pot and providing advice to these kids,” Grooms said. “Georgia Tech handled Tre’s recruitment very professionally. I don’t have anything negative to say about that institution.

“I have a lot of respect for Coach Johnson and his policy dealing with prospects, especially committed prospects. I mean, I really have a lot of respect for that. There is no ‘ill will’ on our end. I look forward to Georgia Tech hopefully getting the opportunity to recruit some other of our kids.”

When Jackson took the recruiting trip to Florida State last weekend, he was informed he may have to accept a grayshirt offer — meaning his enrollment would be delayed until January 2012. However, Florida State had a regular scholarship open up after another recruiting target went elsewhere, leading to Jackson signing with the Seminoles on Wednesday.

I heard he stated last night that he will be leaving the state. Good luck to him if that’s true, but I don’t see him ending up at UGA.

This is hilarious. Dude doesn’t even have offers to FSU, Bama, or Miami. NC State and UGA are his only shots. Feel bad for him. His coach really messed him up.

Ok I’ll say it.
None of these head coaches knows the first thing about commitment.
Soon as someone offers them enough of a pay raise, they tear the contract up and go.
I’d like to see some AD hold them to their commitment.
But if you fire them then the contract is written in stone.
The firing fee should be at most a year’s pay.
How many worthless relatives do these guys need the millions to support?

Isn’t FSU offering a greyshirt which he doesn’t want? He hasn’t taken a visit to any of the other schools. This could end up being a random surprise. Ill guess NC State.

He will sit on the bench at UGA. He would be crazy to go there or FSU. I say he ends up at NC State and regretting he ever listend to his dumb high school coach. The sad part is he could ahve taken his visit to FSU if he had stayed in contact with the coaches at Tech. Instead he ducked, bobbled and weaved trying to be sneaky and under handed about the situation. It has cost him a scholarship where he really wanted to go. Now, he will be stuck at NC State or UGA wishing he’d been honorable and stepped up, man-ed up and kept an open communication with the Tech coaches.

People on Bama blogs are already claiming Crowell, so missing out on the other 2 backs that’s heading to Kentucky may come back to bite us. Caffey looked like the real deal anyway. Ken Malcome who redshirted in 2010 is a heck of a back and is as good as Crowell.

Tre Jackson tears his ACL in his JR year in HS and people stop recruiting him.
CPJ offers him a scholly in October 2010 (first offer he gets) and after a visit the kid accepts – knowing CPJ’s policy on visiting other schools after accepting at GT. The kid starts looking around elsewhere and CPJ pulls the offer.
It looks like he wants to go to a “big name school”. If UGA offers him he will accept.

RRTDawgs, as I stated before and on another thread this morning, I am not so sure about Crowell being a lock to UGA. The coaches are counting him to sign, but some recent stuff over the last few days makes me feel less confident. yesterday i was 10%probability crowell to bama, now that’s up significantly. Still not sure tho. I hope he’s a dawg but just be prepared

MRBIGUNS, Your genius of a coach messed up & rescinded his offer. You’re just pained by the fact that this kid won’t go to Tech & it’s your own coach’s fault. FlaSt didn’t even offer this kid so he would have gone to Tech because that’s the best offer he had.
Now someone else will enjoy his services. Will be good to see the look on your silly coach’s face when this guy lines up against Tech.

Jackson isn’t going to FSU if as he states he wants to enroll this year. FSU offered a grey shirt, which means he can’t enroll until Jan. of 2012. Tre would be crazy not to accept UGA’s offer. He’s between a rock and a hard place with few options.

UGA’s gotten snookered into going after one of GA Tech’s throw-away’s. You’re more than welcome to Tre. He’s going to fit right in with his dishonorable; liar-like, egotistical attitude.
