LB Kent Turene drops USC, will pick from UGA, Nebraska, Texas Tech

Georgia’s chances with an out-of-state recruit increased slightly over the weekend as Kent Turene, a three-star linebacker from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., officially decommitted to Southern Cal.

“Yes, I decommitted to them,” Turene said shortly after his plane landed in Ft. Luaderdale Sunday night. “Now I just need to get home and evaluate everything.”

Turene’s pledge to the Trojans has been shaky for a while. In the last month he has visited Georgia, Nebraska and Texas Tech, the latter just this past weekend. After the trip to Lubbock, Turene decided to pull the plug on USC.

Turene (6-3, 225) raved about his official visit to UGA the weekend before last. He was a little less euphoric about Texas Tech, saying, “It was cool. I liked it.” But Turene still wasn’t willing to offer any hints as to which way he might be leaning, if any way at all.

Asked directly if Georgia had a chance to sign him on Wednesday, Turene said, “They have a great chance.”

Asked what the odds were he’d sign with the Dogs, he said, “I don’t want to put out any odds. I like them all.”

Asked what his plans were for deciding, he said. “I’ve just got to sit down with my parents the next couple of days and evaluate everything and make a decision.”

Turene said he wouldn’t make his choice public until national signing day. At the moment, he wasn’t even sure what his plans were going to be on Wednesday.

“Man, I haven’t even had a chance to think about it,” he said.

This confirms what Lowndes25 had been saying after the official visit. People can hate on the guy all they want, but outside of being surprised by Xzavier Dickson, he has been spot on. From my understanding, even the coaching staff was shocked that Dickson said “Bama.” Kent Turene will end up in Athens where he belongs and he will be a DGD. Keep the Faith!!! Go Dawgs!!!

Yeah I listen to Lowndes25…no matter what the haters on here say. I think Turene will be an asset before it is all said and done. Like many remind us these are 17 and 18 year old kids. Go Dawgs!

German shepherd, we aren’t going to get Richardson anyways IMHO. He’s a UT lean and will be hard to pull out of the state of Tenn. Most recruiting services have him sticking with the vols.

@ German Shepherd Dawg, Not from what I’m hearing. The thing that it seems to solidify is that UGA will not sign and place Dexter Staley as has been mentioned. From what I gather, Jenkins, Turene, Crowell, and Pagan signing will leave us 2 spots. I have heard that we are either getting Richardson and 1 or 2 surprises depending on Richardson, and that Dexter Staley would not be one of them.

@ layinlow, I agree with your statement as most services have stated that Richardson would stick with UT. However, I’ve got to tell you that the UGA coaches believe he will end up in Athens and that the Dawgs have a big lead for him as of tonight. I’m kind of torn as to what I believe, but I will say that credible sources from both sides are saying different things. If I had to guess, I would say it’s a complete tossup, just because I will not go against what Lowndes posts, but at the same time I respect 1 guy on the UT blog.

@ sandman053, My statements are coming directly from someone I trust sandman. This person is telling me that the class is full, and that we have no room for Staley. The only thing I can say to this is it must be that some formidable recruits have guaranteed the coaches they will be in Athens. And, one of those recruits would be either someone we haven’t heard of, Xzavier Dickson, or perhaps some other recruit that intends to flip on signing day. (Or maybe even a shocker like Gabe Wright) I honestly don’t know where Staley is going or who the last recruit is, but I do believe the scenario to be true.

So how many spots do we have left??

If we sign Turene, Crowell, Jenkins, and Pagan that will give us 26. How can we get Richardson, and a surprise. I just don’t see how we have room

@ sandman053, Yeah, I thought it was also, and I really like the Staley kid and feel like he would help in the future. The only thing I can think is that the staff would rather take 4-year kids than a sign and place. Also, he and Turene are very similar players although Turene is a little bigger. I’m not sure to be honest with you, but it would lead me to believe that we’ve gotten a silent commitment from a very good football player to walk away from Staley. I think you and I are really hoping it’s the same guy, but I guess we’ll need to wait until Wednesday.

@ All UGA Fans, Just wanted to throw a point out there. With Turene flipping to UGA most likely and the top player in the state of Tennessee (Richardson) seriously considering the Dawgs, this would be a nice little topping on the pie after last year with Darick Rogers and Nickell Robey spurning us. (Think our staff thinks the same way at all? Just a thought)

Before any of you haters rant that he is just a 3-star…think of David Pollack. He was a 3-star as well and turned out to be one of the greatest Georgia defenders of All-Time. I’d rather have a hard working 3-star ready to be a Dawg than a 5-star that thinks that they’ve made it and doesn’t want to work. Come on Turene! We need you here to restore this defense back to glory! Go Dawgs!

I think the RB depth chart will be
1.) Malcome
2.) Crowell
3.) the little 3rd string RB from this year can’t think of his name right off
4.) Ealey
5.) water boy
6.) any band member
7.) King

He also stated that we have a big lead for Richardson and that we may also get a surprise. He also gave the news that we have no shot at Roberson and that we were no longer considering a sign and place with Staley. I trust the guy, so that is all.

Chip, thank you for the report. If the Dawgs land Turene, to go with the most underrated linebacker in America, Amarlo Hererra, you truly have the makings of a Dream Unit at Linebacker. Georgia has similar type of talent at each position EXCEPT, as usual, the offensive line. For a true dream team to exist, you’ve got to have four star talent at each position and Georgia doesn’t. For a true dream UNIT, take a look at LSU’s offensive line commitments, including LA EL COLLINS, 6′5″ 285lb., 5star OT, JONAH AUSTIN, 6′7″ 305.4star OT, TRAI TURNER 6′5″ 340lb. 4star OL, COREY WHITE 6′5″ 280 lb OL 4star. Now that’s a dream unit, which you must have in order to form a true dream team. Georgia has it everywhere but where they need it the most. The OL. If you were Crowell who would you rather run behind ? These guys or the group Richt and Bobo are stitching together? It’s an easy answer if you have the ability to be objective, and refuse to be some cool-aid drinking blind loyalist.

Someone posted a few days ago that he was upset with our linebacker class. I need to tell you that I’m extremely happy with it. I think Herrera, Wilson, and Turene make for a terrific group. I wouldn’t trade our secondary group for another in the country. Throw in Jenkins, Drew, and Pagan and I couldn’t be happier to be honest. I know they are just names on paper at this point, but at least we have some really good names.
