Georgia Tech adds 3 commitments, loses 1, misses out on another

It was a busy recruiting weekend for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets landed three commitments and lost one, according to various Internet reports.

  • Outside linebacker Nick Menocal (6-3, 225 pounds) of Miami, a longtime University of Miami commitment, confirmed via text message that he flipped on the Hurricanes in order to commit to Tech. The three-star prospect had at least 10 offers, including opportunities at Stanford and Virginia. I’ll have more on Menocal after I interview him later today.
  • Tech landed another potential outside linebacker in Kyle Travis of Cumming. Travis (6-3, 235) played a multitude of positions at South Forsyth High, including defensive end, offensive line and fullback. But he told JacketsOnline.com the Jackets want him to play outside linebacker position. He chose Tech over Georgia Southern.
  • The Yellow Jackets also got a commitment from Sean Tobin, a long snapper out of New Jersey, according to GoJackets.com. Tobin (6-3, 220), who also plays linebacker, canceled a visit to Virginia Tech after committing to the Jackets.
  • Tech also lost Darrius Caldwell. Caldwell, a 6-5, 215-pound defensive end from Mays, had been committed to the Yellow Jackets since September, committed to Illinois after a visit there this weekend, according to bbuzzoff.com, the site that covers Tech for 247Sports.com. Caldwell didn’t return message seeking comment. But he told OrangeandBlueNews.com, that Rivals site that covers Illinois: “Yes, I am now committed to Illinois. I loved my visit to Illinois and talked to my mom and just decided to get out of Atlanta and go to school somewhere different.” Reportedly he hasn’t told the Tech coaches yet. Caldwell did not return phone messages left for him Sunday.
  • As AJC colleague Michael Carvell reported earlier Sunday, Chattahoochee kicker Ammon Lakip chose Clemson over the Yellow Jackets this weekend. Lakip’s father attended Tech.

The additions and subtractions add up to 23 commitments for the Yellow Jackets, who still have several offers out to some elite recruits. I’ll follow up and hopefully have more details later today.

D. Caldwell committed to GT last September, goes to Illinois and commits this weekend and does not tell
GT before it is announced in the media. Good riddance.

Caldwell knew that if PJ knew of his trip, his scholarship offer would be pulled.I hate to lose him but if he couldn’t man up off the field I’d have my concerns on the field.
Thank you Stinger2 for acting like you’ve been there before.

11 of 23 recruits are homeboys! Shows most Georgia boys would rather play at other schools! Something is not right!

More to the Caldwell story than being told (read this comment any way you like, but my suggestion is to think of the old adage, there are TWO sides to every story). GA Tech WILL have another commitment on Wednesday evening, either Cooper, or another player already targeted by the staff. That player is already prepared to commit if/when that scholly becomes available.

UGA REALLY STANDS FOR JOE DIRT

It’s been known for some time now that caldwell can not meet GT academic standards and would have to find another school. He does not meet the academic requirement to attend GT period and so he has to move on. I wish the kid the best but he would flunk out and never survive at GT. Menocal is a great player. We have some big physical linebackers coming in who fit the 3-4 scheme. Days and mcnair are studs as well with good size and speed! Tuitt drama not over as PJ has a last in-home visit and so watch for another possible flip on NSD. ND has no visits left. Advantage =GT

We can’t just sign anyone we want. We have to recruit the student-athlete first for all the idiots who wonder why uga gets all the top kids. GT could beat UGA 20 straight times and i still beat you that they get better recruits because of the academic requirements at GT.

50+ years of biased reporting by the state media….newspapers, radio, and TV stations is why Tech has so much trouble attracting the five stars. Way to go, UGA…next is to continue to try and absorb GT within the next 50 yeas. God knows we can’t allow ANYTHING to affect UGA football.

By the way, Tobin is rated one of the top Special Team players in the Country this year, so this pick up is huge for the Jackets; don’t let anyone play down this commitment. He’s considered the top Long Snapper in this year’s class.

I mentioned Wednesday a bit earlier, look for Cooper to make his decision by then (public announcement), and if he chooses the Jackets, this will be pretty much closing out the class unless they find one more position player they like as the Coaching staff always like to hold back scholarships for players already on the roster who aren’t on scholarship. If Cooper doesn’t select GA Tech, then Trey Flowers, out of Alabama, gets the offer and will pull the trigger on Wednesday. He’ll make everyone forget about Caldwell, I promise…

John,

If you could find 1 (one) positive article about UGA football from the ajc over the last couple years, I will pay you for it.

Even when UGA slapped the Nerds last Thanksgiving (again), the article the next day by Bradley was “Tech fans giddy over coach after loss to UGA” and “Tech outcoaches UGA, but come up short”

Like Chip Towers told some young man a few weeks ago, “I report the news. I cannot just make up good news for Tech”

DA: Get your head out of your rear end. The AJC is the constant force behind UGA. It always has and always will be. Chip, Barnhart, Schultz, and others all went there. Dowdle at WSB…UGA.

Hell, the AJC is active in recruiting FOR UGA…look at Chip’s OWN columns…especially the Tuitt situation. He made no effort in trying to differentiate the differences between GT and Notre Done.

If Tech would open it’s curriculum, just a tad, maybe Tech would get a real journalist to write for them, and maybe even land more commits that aren’t turned off by having to work their tales off for a Management degree.

There are VERY few recruits that sign with Tech for the academics. Most want a clear path to the NFL. And at UGA, not only are you on a beautiful campus in a REAL college town, but you play in the SEC and are able to study things that better interest them like Sports Management or Education in order to one day be a football coach themselves if the NFL doesn’t happen. No UGA fans deny this. Techies need to get THEIR heads out of their a__ and realize these kids are not in the least turned on by your “Engineers make millions” jargon. They do not want to work that hard.

Sorry.

Well..DA: Here is where we agree. I AGREE that GT needs to open things up. If they want to compete at the higest level of sports, they need to open up the curriculum.

But…the political reality is that the Board of Regents will NOT allow that to happen…even if GT wanted to. The BOR will NOT allow GT to do ANYTHING that will level the playing field.

How do you win with a class like this? It’s as though the staff is signing anyone with a heartbeat. 1 four-star recruit? 50th or so nationally? A long snapper? When you have 25 to give and you rank at the bottom of the ACC, someting is wrong. This is sad for a program with such great tradition and success.

Chose Tech over Georgia Southern’………….This is what’s scaring Tech Faithful some….Going against FSU, VT, Clemson, Miami, NC and yes UGA, you need a star or two up. Tech Faithful I talk to are very concerned that although they think Johnson is a better coach, the talent on the flats is dropping a tad to off set the coaching improvement………

Here is why GT gets so little respect within the State of Georgia when dealing with the average Georgian:

Here is what you get when you deal with the average Georgian:

Me: Do you like Ga Tech?

Ave Georgian: HELL NO!!

Me: Why not?

AG: They are a bunch of snooty snobs. They think they are so much better than anyone.

Me: Have you ever met a Tech grad?

AG: No.

Me: Then how do you know they are a bunch of snooty snobs if you never met a Tech grad?

AG: Well……they just are!

Me: But how do you know? Answer the question.

AG: Well….I know a friend of a friend whose cousin knows a friend that met one…he said he is a snob.

And that folks…is what Ga Tech has to put up with in the State of Georgia.

It will probably be a record year at UGA For true freshman playing. No time to wait and see what some of these boys have got. I say 10-12 of the class see the field early. The clock is ticking in Athens.

On the goal line

January 24th, 2011
8:59 am

UGA also got a committ from some kid in Florida that is a long snapper and as always with a snapper there is a story. They do not win games on the goal line or shoving toward the goal on 4th and inches.

Celebrate a long sanpper if you will but all that they will do is snap the skin. This is always a political position in order to placate a kid already on campus with his bud or his bro.

Any news on the recruiting front in Athens? I serioulsy doubt that any of UGA’s kids are also looking at Ga Southern or West Ga University like one of these GT kids.

Go SEC and Go Dogs.
