Ten@10: Crowell’s mom ‘not selling my son’s soul to the devil’

THE TEN AT 10:

1. Isaiah Crowell’s mother said she’s thrilled about their family friend Quintavious Harrow receiving a scholarship offer from Georgia, but not if it comes with any attachments to her son.

“Well, for Quintavious it’s wonderful,” Deborah Crowell told me Monday. “But I don’t want them to do it to get Isaiah there. I’m not selling my son’s soul to the devil. This is his decision. If they want to give Quintavious a scholarship, that’s fine. But that can’t have anything to do with Isaiah. He has too much pressure on him as it is and I’m going to lay that on the line with them. We’ll discuss that while we’re up there.”

Crowell, No. 1 on the AJC Fab 50 list, will be taking his official visit to Georgia this weekend along with his mother and the rest of his family. So will Harrow, better known as “Cootie” to family and friends. The 5-11, 190-pound linebacker/safety from Carver-Columbus — who is Crowell’s best friend — received a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs last week, his first from any school.

The Harrows and the Crowells, who have known each other since their kids were in kindergarten, just got back from a trip to Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama this past weekend. They left very impressed with coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

“It was wonderful,” said Mrs. Crowell, who will also accompany her son and his final visit to Auburn on Jan. 28. “They kept us busy, but we had fun. They had everything planned out and stuck by it all weekend. My husband and I had a wonderful time and Isaiah did, too.”

2. It appears that Valdosta’s Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome are definitely going to have their college announcements separately this Thursday. Both players are scheduled to unveil their decisions between Alabama and Georgia that day. But Rome has decided to make his announcement live on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. (location currently undetermined). Mitchell told me he’s going to stick with his plan to announce at 7 p.m. at the Hibachi Grill and Buffet in Valdosta. It will be carried live by some local radio stations (92.1 FM, 1150 AM and 96.1 FM).

ESPNU tried to convince Mitchell, a fellow Under Armour All-American, to join Rome on the telecast. “Yeah, but I don’t think I’m going to do that,” Mitchell told me. “He wants to do his on TV. I’m just not that big on the TV thing. I’m just sticking with what I have planned. I just wanted to do it where everybody who watched me this season could be there.”

Mitchell said nothing should be read into the fact that they are holding separate announcements. “Nah,” he said. “It doesn’t mean anything.”

Head coach Rance Gillespie is not thrilled with either plan. He said he’d prefer if his two stars would do it together at the high school.

On a sad side note, James Eunice, a Valdosta High classmate and teammate of Mitchell and Rome, has been missing since a boat mishap occurred during a duck hunt on Ocean Pond in Valdosta this past weekend. Thoughts and prayers for that family.

3. AJC Super 11 linebacker James Vaughters of Tucker told me he had a “good trip” to Stanford this past weekend and that he and his family were very impressed with new coach David Shaw. “He has NFL experience and I trust he’ll hire an experienced defensive coordinator and another good linebackers coach. I really enjoyed it out there.”

Vaughters and his family made the long trek to California for his official visit Thursday and stayed through Sunday. One of Vaughters’ chief concerns was the departure of Stanford defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Vic Fangio, who followed head coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL.

As for whether or not he’ll stick with his commitment to the Cardinal, Vaughters, the AJC’s the No. 4 prospect, said, “I haven’t completely decided yet but I’m pretty sure.” He said he may still visit Florida and Ohio State.

4. AJC Super 11 defensive end Ray Drew of Thomas County Central is taking his fifth and final official visit to Clemson this weekend. The 6-5, 250-pound athlete has not been there since an unofficial visit during the season. Since then the Tigers lost his position coach, Chris Rumph, to Alabama. “I just want to get in there and see Clemson again because a lot has changed since last time I was there,” Drew said. “I need to spend some time up there and get reacquainted with everybody.”

Drew said Alabama tried to get him to take an official visit there. and he wanted to. He was unable to fit it into his schedule but said he is still giving the Crimson Tide some consideration. Somewhat surprisingly, Drew took official visit No. 4 to Miami this past weekend. He had not previously mentioned the Hurricanes as a finalists.

5. For what it’s worth John Jenkins said Georgia is the only school besides Oklahoma State that bothered to visit his family twice in Meriden, Conn. Jenkins, a 6-4, 340-pound noseguard from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is taking his official visit to UGA this weekend. He visited Miami along with Drew this past weekend. Jenkins said he would choose between the Bulldogs, Auburn, Florida and Miami on or after national signing day.

6. Stephon Tuitt has gone underground. The four-star defensive end from Monroe Area hasn’t been heard from since his official visit to Georgia Tech this past weekend. Tuitt (6-5, 260) is committed to Notre Dame but decided to take one last trip to The Flats to make certain of his choice. Apparently it has only confused him.

The normally accessible Tuitt did not return my phone calls (or anybody elses) Sunday or Monday. However, IrishEyes.com did reach his mother Monday night. “He is still committed to Notre Dame,” she told the Scout site. “He would like to take a couple days to think about think about everything. He just needs some time before he’s ready to talk.”

So we’ll give him more time.

7. Meanwhile, three other players committed to the Jackets during the mega-recruiting weekend, including Tuitt’s teammate, Demontevious Smith. Troy, Ala., athlete Corey Dennis and Lakeland, Fla., offensive lineman Errin Joe were the others.

I didn’t realize this until Monday but Dennis is the son of former UGA football player and current athletic director at Troy University, Steve Dennis. Coach Dennis was also a longtime assistant at Auburn. Here’s a story that will tell you more about Corey Dennis and his recruitment to Tech.

8. Georgia Tech, which is now up to 21 commitments, is apparently also making a late push for four-star offensive lineman Xzavier Ward. Tech coaches made an in-home visit with the 6-foot-7, 260-pound offensive tackle from Colquitt County on Monday, according to JacketsOnline.com. Dan Mullen and other Mississippi State coaches were also in to see Ward.

He might be a long shot for both teams. Speculation is that Ward may commit to Auburn while on an official visit on The Plains this weekend. But Ward’s recruitment has been somewhat of a mystery all along. He was supposed to take official visits to Florida and Alabama, respectively, the last two weekends but had the trips canceled by the schools because they had no more room for tackles, according to AuburnSports.com.

The No. 9-ranked Ward is one of only six players on the AJC Fab 50 list currently uncommitted.

9. Georgia State recently received a commitment from defensive tackle Fatu Ullale, a 6-2, 275-pound defensive lineman from Cerritos (Calif.) Community College. Ulale said he will sign with the Panthers on national signing day and join the team in June after he graduates from junior college. “I just fell in love with the coaching staff, basically,” Ulale said of choosing to come all the way across the U.S. to play football. “I had a connection with some of the other players there, too, and I feel like I may be able to come in and have an impact.”

Another player targeted by Georgia State ended up committing to Samford last Friday. Jerry Mathis (6-4, 285) was a two-way starter for Rockdale County but is expected to play defensive line for Samford.

“I felt that it was a good move for me and it was the best opportunity for me as far as football and education,” Mathis said. “I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season to face the reigning champions the Auburn Tigers. I was looking into Georgia State but their defensive line filled. The coaches there really wanted me but I  guess their timing was a little off. But I feel I made the right decision.”

10. THIS & THAT: Center Manrey Saint-Amour from North Gwinnett committed to Georgia Southern, coach Bob Sphire said. Manrey was co-lineman of the year in Gwinnett County. . . . Grady DB Damian Swann said he’ll be wearing the number 5 at Georgia next season. . . . Alabama commitments Dee Hart and Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix of Orlando have canceled their official visits to Southern Cal scheduled for this weekend, according to the Orlando Sentinel. . . . DE Mason Harris of Rossville had an in-home visit from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, according to PalmettoSports.com. Harris is a Gamecocks’ commitment. . . . McEachern tight end Rory Anderson visited Tennessee over the weekend.

DOC EDWARDS
If what you are saying is true then Chip owes MRS. Crowell an apology because the way you are stating the quote changes the entire meaning and is not directing the concern against just UGA. Chip has never miss quoted people before that I know of and I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.
CHIP;
Is DOC EDWARDS just trying to stir things up or did you mis quote MRS. Crowell. Don’t be offended by me asking but my comment was based on the quote you reported. If DOC EDWARDS is not being truthful I think you should ban him from the blog.

Saban – perfect coach reached pinnacle at Bama – “where else can I go.I am staying put unless Lake Burton gets a team.”

Saban-great heart and can relate to all players – future millionaires in NFL he is one and has been

around them 30 yrs and can relate to starters with no future NFL and walk-ons b/c he was both..

Relates to asst coaches he was one and HS coaches – his Dad was one…

Wow this place is in complete melt down. Lots of passion for both great college football programs. I can tell you now… without any doubt… UGA will get Crowell. Some of the Bulldog fans need to relax.. the kid has been a UGA fans his whole life. Bama fans need to relax and not feel the need to defend every yahoo who calls our coach “Satan” or claims he cheats.. oversigns.. kicks kids out of the program to make more room ..etc. It’s a good thing for your rivals to hate (fear) your coach. Don’t remember anyone hating Shula. The name calling and so forth.. who cares? There are other boards for talking trash. ROLL TIDE

One thing the visiting recruit’s and their parents don’t have to worry about with Coach Mark Richt is, when National Singing Day arrives, He won’t be looking them in the eye and saying, “I’m sorry we’ve oversigned and don’t have room” or “I’m sorry we’ve made a mistake and don’t have anymore scholarships available”.
Oversigning is widely praticed at some SEC schools and other schools around the country.
Very misleading to a young man and his parent or parents who sometimes don’t understand when they verbally commit early. Then when signing day does arrive and another player was taken instead at the last minute. Lots of 18 year olds are stuck scrambling for a school to go to.
Getting rid of a Sophmore or Junior player by means of medical scholarship is another means freeing up scholarships. Offering 1 year scholarships is another way of beating the system.
Most widely used though is the “Promise you’ll be able to play the 1st day”
Whatever Coach Mark Richt tells you, you can BANK on it.
Paul Johnson is another coach who shoots from the hip.
Most of these 5 star kids want a fasttrack to the NFL and won’t stay in school any longer than they have too, so why not take a bunch of 3 stars who want to fight everyday of pratice for a playing position.
I wonder if Crowell realizes that UGA has a redshirt RB who’ll be ready to play this season named Ken Malcome, who BTW was 4 star when he came to Athens last season.
Saw him warming up this season before each home game and he looks good in pratice, seems like if he wasn’t all that special CMR would have pulled his shirt earlier in the season.
UGA and Ga. Tech both have some good looking recruits coming in, some we’ll get and some we won’t. One thing both schools won’t offer and that’s false hope. BANK ON IT!!!!

My take on Crowell’s mom… I think there is ALOT of pressure on that kid right now. Fresh off a trip to Bama… he may be questioning some things. His heart has always been UGA no doubt. No one on this board has any idea what’s going on at the Crowell residence. I think Mrs. Crowell is looking out for her child.. and I don’t think she was refering to Richt or UGA as the devil. In the end all is forgiving.. he is a Bulldog.

@mpeters57: I’m not sure if there was any motivation on UGA’s part to offer the kid or not. I DO know they offered both Ogletree brothers and it worled out real well. I also think if this kid wasn’t buddies with a 5-star recruit no one would care. Go Dawgs!

I live in Monroe and don’t get me wrong the Smith kid is a good athlete but around here we were under the impression he was going to Harvard. It was even mentioned during the season in the paper. Even Chip put in his article about Tech’s commitments over the weekend that Coach Fligg had to hound the Tech coach about Smith since last year and all of the sudden he has a offer as signing day gets close. I am happy for Demon don’t get me wrong, just don’t write articles and ask questions to make it seem like “How dare Georgia do something like this”.

TheTruth

I had the oppurtunity to speak with Carver’s coach tonight. It seems that UGA and it’s fans may be putting far too much pressure on the young man Crowell with it seeming that so many have expectations of him being a savior for the program or he must go to UGA for Richt not to get fired and the fact that so many extreme UGA fans are calling for Richt to be fired, all this is not good at all. These are negative points to a young man who just wants to be a young man playing football and enjoying his college experience and doing the best he can do. If I were a running back Id like to hear how many carries, how many yards and what OL were coming in. He did not ask to be looked at as a savior. Going from High School to college is a big adjustment for any YOUNG man and to add an extreme amount of pressure is only what a prima donna would like. All the talk of so much of the future of the program and it’s coach weighing on his decision, is a VERY lot of pressure, is unfair and obviously not pleasant. If he were to go to UGA that might take any excitement and fun about a decisionn and announcement that is supposed to be the biggest thrill of his life. So it seems that UGA fans and the recruiters need to back off talk of what might happen to UGA if he dont sign and focus on HIM and him being relaxed and pressure-free on his official visit and during recruiting visits to his school or home and from here on out. Maybe focus on the positives about UGA but remove the pressure of him being “perceived” as a “savior”. He is just a kid and UGA is putting more pressure on than anyone according to the coach, so the right kind of pressure or contact is key. People need to not put in print also their lack of support for the coach at UGA either, but SHOW their SUPPORT, because it is scaring away top recruits….duh. UGA fans on this blog dont need to be that stupid when kids are deciding what college to pick OK? From now on till the end of time we must blame those comments on Tech Fans or somebody!. The only ones fanning the fire on Richt are certain blogs and comments after articles Let’s let the ones with much more knowledge and first-hand information decide about the coaching staff. They will do what’s best. UGA fans help your program and support your coach even if you want him fired, because your comments are not going to get him fired, but they are influencing recruits decisions or at least weighing heavily in their decision and placing a negativity around the entire program more than the recent records. No one on here will ever cause the coach to be fired but will cause the football team to be hurt. One more thing, Auburn does not look to have a chance to sign him.

Crimson Hammah, the coach issue is a huge issue with Crowell and most kids because they might not like the next coach at all and have to transfer or endure him for years and/or the new offense may not be a good fit for veryign reasons. The coach issue is huge with parents also whom they entrust to look out for their son.

When I first read this article about Crowell’s mother, I didn;’t really think much about it since it didn’t concern Tech. But the more I think about it the more I didn’t like the content or it’s tone. It did not serve any purpose other than to bring out negative emotions in an already difficult decision. It did not help Harrow. It did not help Crowell and it did not help his mother or UGA’s chances of signing him. I normally enjoy reading your articles since they are usually informative and entertaining, but I think you should have left his mother out of this process, it served no purpose.

You can say what you want to say about Crowell going wherever. But when morons say, “don’t go to Bama, Saban will leave for the NFL…” He makes 5.5, Belichick makes 7.5 with twice as many headaches. Bama’s defense is a freight train rolling down the SEC next year. Anybody that thinks Saban coaches anywhere but Bama the rest of his life is a moron. Georgia fans should forget about Crowell and pray Clowney ends up at Bama. Clowney is a taller version of Lawrence Taylor (without the coke problem). If he ends up at SC he and Lattimore will rule the east. If I was Crowell I’d go to Georgia over Bama in a heartbeat because he is better than back on Georgia’s roster.
