THE TEN AT 10:
1. Isaiah Crowell’s mother said she’s thrilled about their family friend Quintavious Harrow receiving a scholarship offer from Georgia, but not if it comes with any attachments to her son.
“Well, for Quintavious it’s wonderful,” Deborah Crowell told me Monday. “But I don’t want them to do it to get Isaiah there. I’m not selling my son’s soul to the devil. This is his decision. If they want to give Quintavious a scholarship, that’s fine. But that can’t have anything to do with Isaiah. He has too much pressure on him as it is and I’m going to lay that on the line with them. We’ll discuss that while we’re up there.”
Crowell, No. 1 on the AJC Fab 50 list, will be taking his official visit to Georgia this weekend along with his mother and the rest of his family. So will Harrow, better known as “Cootie” to family and friends. The 5-11, 190-pound linebacker/safety from Carver-Columbus — who is Crowell’s best friend — received a scholarship offer from the Bulldogs last week, his first from any school.
The Harrows and the Crowells, who have known each other since their kids were in kindergarten, just got back from a trip to Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama this past weekend. They left very impressed with coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.
“It was wonderful,” said Mrs. Crowell, who will also accompany her son and his final visit to Auburn on Jan. 28. “They kept us busy, but we had fun. They had everything planned out and stuck by it all weekend. My husband and I had a wonderful time and Isaiah did, too.”
2. It appears that Valdosta’s Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome are definitely going to have their college announcements separately this Thursday. Both players are scheduled to unveil their decisions between Alabama and Georgia that day. But Rome has decided to make his announcement live on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. (location currently undetermined). Mitchell told me he’s going to stick with his plan to announce at 7 p.m. at the Hibachi Grill and Buffet in Valdosta. It will be carried live by some local radio stations (92.1 FM, 1150 AM and 96.1 FM).
ESPNU tried to convince Mitchell, a fellow Under Armour All-American, to join Rome on the telecast. “Yeah, but I don’t think I’m going to do that,” Mitchell told me. “He wants to do his on TV. I’m just not that big on the TV thing. I’m just sticking with what I have planned. I just wanted to do it where everybody who watched me this season could be there.”
Mitchell said nothing should be read into the fact that they are holding separate announcements. “Nah,” he said. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
Head coach Rance Gillespie is not thrilled with either plan. He said he’d prefer if his two stars would do it together at the high school.
On a sad side note, James Eunice, a Valdosta High classmate and teammate of Mitchell and Rome, has been missing since a boat mishap occurred during a duck hunt on Ocean Pond in Valdosta this past weekend. Thoughts and prayers for that family.
3. AJC Super 11 linebacker James Vaughters of Tucker told me he had a “good trip” to Stanford this past weekend and that he and his family were very impressed with new coach David Shaw. “He has NFL experience and I trust he’ll hire an experienced defensive coordinator and another good linebackers coach. I really enjoyed it out there.”
Vaughters and his family made the long trek to California for his official visit Thursday and stayed through Sunday. One of Vaughters’ chief concerns was the departure of Stanford defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Vic Fangio, who followed head coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL.
As for whether or not he’ll stick with his commitment to the Cardinal, Vaughters, the AJC’s the No. 4 prospect, said, “I haven’t completely decided yet but I’m pretty sure.” He said he may still visit Florida and Ohio State.
4. AJC Super 11 defensive end Ray Drew of Thomas County Central is taking his fifth and final official visit to Clemson this weekend. The 6-5, 250-pound athlete has not been there since an unofficial visit during the season. Since then the Tigers lost his position coach, Chris Rumph, to Alabama. “I just want to get in there and see Clemson again because a lot has changed since last time I was there,” Drew said. “I need to spend some time up there and get reacquainted with everybody.”
Drew said Alabama tried to get him to take an official visit there. and he wanted to. He was unable to fit it into his schedule but said he is still giving the Crimson Tide some consideration. Somewhat surprisingly, Drew took official visit No. 4 to Miami this past weekend. He had not previously mentioned the Hurricanes as a finalists.
5. For what it’s worth John Jenkins said Georgia is the only school besides Oklahoma State that bothered to visit his family twice in Meriden, Conn. Jenkins, a 6-4, 340-pound noseguard from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, is taking his official visit to UGA this weekend. He visited Miami along with Drew this past weekend. Jenkins said he would choose between the Bulldogs, Auburn, Florida and Miami on or after national signing day.
6. Stephon Tuitt has gone underground. The four-star defensive end from Monroe Area hasn’t been heard from since his official visit to Georgia Tech this past weekend. Tuitt (6-5, 260) is committed to Notre Dame but decided to take one last trip to The Flats to make certain of his choice. Apparently it has only confused him.
The normally accessible Tuitt did not return my phone calls (or anybody elses) Sunday or Monday. However, IrishEyes.com did reach his mother Monday night. “He is still committed to Notre Dame,” she told the Scout site. “He would like to take a couple days to think about think about everything. He just needs some time before he’s ready to talk.”
So we’ll give him more time.
7. Meanwhile, three other players committed to the Jackets during the mega-recruiting weekend, including Tuitt’s teammate, Demontevious Smith. Troy, Ala., athlete Corey Dennis and Lakeland, Fla., offensive lineman Errin Joe were the others.
I didn’t realize this until Monday but Dennis is the son of former UGA football player and current athletic director at Troy University, Steve Dennis. Coach Dennis was also a longtime assistant at Auburn. Here’s a story that will tell you more about Corey Dennis and his recruitment to Tech.
8. Georgia Tech, which is now up to 21 commitments, is apparently also making a late push for four-star offensive lineman Xzavier Ward. Tech coaches made an in-home visit with the 6-foot-7, 260-pound offensive tackle from Colquitt County on Monday, according to JacketsOnline.com. Dan Mullen and other Mississippi State coaches were also in to see Ward.
He might be a long shot for both teams. Speculation is that Ward may commit to Auburn while on an official visit on The Plains this weekend. But Ward’s recruitment has been somewhat of a mystery all along. He was supposed to take official visits to Florida and Alabama, respectively, the last two weekends but had the trips canceled by the schools because they had no more room for tackles, according to AuburnSports.com.
The No. 9-ranked Ward is one of only six players on the AJC Fab 50 list currently uncommitted.
9. Georgia State recently received a commitment from defensive tackle Fatu Ullale, a 6-2, 275-pound defensive lineman from Cerritos (Calif.) Community College. Ulale said he will sign with the Panthers on national signing day and join the team in June after he graduates from junior college. “I just fell in love with the coaching staff, basically,” Ulale said of choosing to come all the way across the U.S. to play football. “I had a connection with some of the other players there, too, and I feel like I may be able to come in and have an impact.”
Another player targeted by Georgia State ended up committing to Samford last Friday. Jerry Mathis (6-4, 285) was a two-way starter for Rockdale County but is expected to play defensive line for Samford.
“I felt that it was a good move for me and it was the best opportunity for me as far as football and education,” Mathis said. “I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season to face the reigning champions the Auburn Tigers. I was looking into Georgia State but their defensive line filled. The coaches there really wanted me but I guess their timing was a little off. But I feel I made the right decision.”
10. THIS & THAT: Center Manrey Saint-Amour from North Gwinnett committed to Georgia Southern, coach Bob Sphire said. Manrey was co-lineman of the year in Gwinnett County. . . . Grady DB Damian Swann said he’ll be wearing the number 5 at Georgia next season. . . . Alabama commitments Dee Hart and Ha’Sean Clinton-Dix of Orlando have canceled their official visits to Southern Cal scheduled for this weekend, according to the Orlando Sentinel. . . . DE Mason Harris of Rossville had an in-home visit from South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, according to PalmettoSports.com. Harris is a Gamecocks’ commitment. . . . McEachern tight end Rory Anderson visited Tennessee over the weekend.

RTR22,
Saban already has more than 20 scholarships accepted but only 11 open spots on his team, yet he’s still looking to add more players from Georgia.
How does that math working out for you? In Georgia, they teach us that those numbers don’t reconcile very well. Of course, we have a coach with integrity, who actually cares about the kids under his guidance. Not a mercenary like Saban — enjoy him while you can. He never lasts.
Who’s gonna get screwed over by offering more scholarships than you have? Some poor 18 year old kid, unfortunately….there’s no penalty for “playing the system” like your unscrupulous coach.

Chip, a few weeks ago I was the first to report that Shannon Brown had left Cook High School for a jc in Mississippi. You and others said that could not be the case because he would have to graduate from high school first. However there is a program at the jc where he can complete his GD there then start college classes next fall. So therefore I would appreciate an apology and never doubt I know an tremendous amount about UGA Football. I knew this about Shannon because Grantham had been to Cook High School several times recently.

Regarding Harrow,
Last year gave a pretty good indication that UGA coaches don’t offer a kid just to get another. They offered Zan Ogletree after Alec and didn’t offer Nash Nance, which cost them Da’rick Rodgers.
I’m not saying it hurt Harrow to be friends with Crowell because UGA was there so often to scout him, but Richt isn’t the type of coach to offer a kid conditional on his friend or brother, based on his track record. They obviously think Harrow can be a player on the field, or they wouldn’t offer him.

Hey G S Dawg, you let me worry about the math. I get paid over $5 Mil a year and can handle the simple math. I will not b able to post anymore today, I have 2012 and 2013 recruiting to worry about. The 2011 class is all but locked up after this weekend’s visitors. I can not comment on the individual recruits but I can say…Good things for the Tide in the future. I will add that the pick’ens are easy in georgia. I did leave you enough talent to have a decent team though
To McGragor and Lowder – the ncaa will see you soon enough and dont get use to that trophy

Good Golly,
a 1400something would have been great under the old SAT where a 1600 was the highest score possible. The new SAT is out of 2400 points, which translates to a 700something score on the old SAT. Not Good at all.

1. If Georgia is “desperate” by offering Harrow, how do you explain Florida and Alabama doing the same?
2. Anyone who thinks Richt will rescind Harrow’s offer if Crowell doesn’t sign, does not know Mark Richt. Say what you will about his record, but no reasonable person can assail his character with any credibility.
3. The chances of Harrow being “run off” after a year or two at Georgia are nil compared to some other schools if you go on Richt’s 10 year record in that regard.
4. Our friend Tide Roll implies Xzavier Ward will be a great pickup for Auburn. As a Tide fan, are you happy with that, and why didn’t Saban continue to recruit him if he is so good? Looks like a number of schools besides UGA took a pass on him, so don’t come back here later blasting the Dogs for not signing him.
5. About Richt’s possible future at Georgia, recruits would be wise to realize the SEC chews ups and spits out coaches, so don’t count on the coach recruiting you being there for all 4 years, even if he has won big recently- see Urban Meyer.

Thanks Brooksdawg,
But, I’m really just a young guy not too far removed from seeing all this stuff going on. It’s all part of the game, like I said. We’ll get the kids that want to wear the “G”. They better be ready to come in and work their tails off though, becuase there is going to be a renewed attitude in place in Athens headed into ‘11. I think that Richt and Meyer will make a great broadcast team. Both will better than Davies for sure.
Addressing some issues – can you comment on the lack of discipline at UGA and the number of arrest. The recruit’s moms that I talk with are really concerned with this. Even Aubrn has this under control with the local police on the AD payroll and are typically paid a bonus just to give any players they catch a free ride back to the dorm.

For the third year in a row it looks like CMR’s recruiting class will be under what he is allowed per the NCAA. This year he is allowed 30 and I think we have about 17 at present. The last two years we only signed a total of 36. In that time span many underclassman have quit or been kicked off the team. Someone need to remind CMR that we are allowed to have 85 scholarship players. This is the most telling sign to me that CMR has become lazy as head coach.

Saban never sleeps………….Geez….Yes, the 18 year olds in Athens on the football team are the only ones in the SEC that drink, party, chase women and get rowdy…… None of the other schools players do that…….The real reason is the 0 tolerance by the Athens PD and they will not take the players to head coach to be dealt with like at other schools. That’s a fact.

Sad day in Dosta losing Jason Eunice. Great kid,
Straight A student, already accepted at Georgia
not on an athletic scholarship, although he was
a good football and baseball player. His brother
John was elected to the City Council while he
was in college at VSU, now at Mercer law school.
Close friend with Malcom and Jay, know he would

Hrmmm … according to the no name poster above the Gators and Bama offered Harrow too , He should ge right to work applying for a job somewhere because no one seems to have that magical piece of information that I have seen .
Number of schools with articles about “Cootie” receiving a scholarship offer – 1
Name(s) of schools listed on every major recruiting site as actually having a scholarship offer extended – Georgia and ….. okay … just Georgia . That was a tough one because admittedly all the recruiting services did have to find out how to spell his name so they could rush to add it to their databases once Georgia offered
Not so much as a Vanderbilt , a UCF or for that matter anyone else is listed as actually extended an offer to this guy . Stop pretending Bama and Florida did just because it makes Georgia looks so pathetic to have done so ….

Because let’s face it,..this does appear at first glance to be a player we would not look twice at if not for the extenuating circumstance of Crowell. You are probably right, but I can still dream. He had a good visit at GT and I know he has a visit set with Clemson, but he would really have to step it up to get in the mix on Clemson’s line and they already got the top d-lineman on their list with Crawford and Pagan as well as thier top two last year. He does not even have a Clemson offer yet. I believe it will be between USC and GT and hopefully karma swings in GTs favor since USC already took a o-lineman who had previously commited to GT. I know some people do not even know who we are talking about and though his size needs to improve I think he could work into GTs rotation now. 2/2 can’t get here soon enough.

Crowell, Mitchell to Bama mark my words.
The SEC says you can sign 28 Bama makes the numbers works when it counts and will likely put three palyers in the First round of the NFL Draft in April. All juniors might I add. These kids see the future potential at Bama and not the looming coaching change coming to Athens. Kirby Smart will turn things around when he arrives as CMR replacement so there is hope for the Dawgs, just not this year.

I hate seeing comments like that from Crowell’s mother because some reporter or Saban , himself would drill that into her brain . When Chip said Crowell’s mother said ” I’m not going to sell my son’s soul to the Devil” , I thought she meant Saban and that she saw through his crap.
I have two things to say to Crowell’s mother:
1. don’t show your ignorance by letting Saban put bad thought’s into your head before your visit. If you are thinking the worst before you get to Athens then you will find fault with everything.
2. Check out the track record on Saban versus CMR and you will find that Saban will ride the fence a lot more than CMR when it come’s to underhanded trick’s or questionable behavior concerning ethic’s or integrity.

Better stay away from Auburn Mr. Crowell. You know the NCAA must be coming down hard on them the way the coaches are leaving left and right for lateral jobs.
Oh, wait. They’re NOT leaving for promotions and pay raises at other schools, because they know that Auburn has been 100% cleared by the NCAA and the investigation is over. Be careful, though, because word on the street is that some other SEC schools may be investigated for things that were discovered while exonerating Auburn.

This is what happens to 5 star players when they go to Bama
B.J. Scott Transferring
It’s hard to say this one is a surprise, but it is disappointing news nevertheless. The rumors have been confirmed, and according to Mike Herndon of the Press-Register:
B.J. Scott, one of the jewels of Alabama’s top-ranked 2008 recruiting class, is looking to transfer and may be headed to South Alabama, according to two sources close to the situation.
According to one of the sources, who asked not to be identified, Scott has not yet been granted a release from Alabama, but a transfer could be complete by the end of the week.
Again, this one really cannot be considered much of a surprise. Five-star recruit or not, any time a player gets all of one meaningful snap in three years, with a non-injury related redshirt thrown in during his true sophomore season, then something is clearly amiss. Most always thought his long-term position was cornerback, regardless of his theatrics at Vigor with the ball in his hands, but for whatever reason that transition just never worked out.
I’ll be honest, his struggles are really nothing short of mystifying. He wasn’t a character case, that much we know for certain, otherwise he wouldn’t have lasted three years under Saban. A lot of people speculated that he could never grasp the playbook, but we’ve never seen anything at all to confirm that, and he was a good student in high school so I tend to doubt that was the case. Clearly he has talent and he was heavily recruited by every school in the country, so the fact that he couldn’t get on the field with a coach with the position expertise of Saban — who, just a year ago, literally put three kids in the NFL who most never thought were even legitimate SEC prospects — will probably always be a mystery. His interception against Tennessee in Knoxville this season will end up being the only on-field contribution that anyone remembers him by.
Nevertheless, while he never put it together on the field, in many ways Scott served his purpose. His commitment to Alabama in July of 2007 played a major role in our re-taking of the recruiting hotbed of Mobile, and his commitment also helped us sign several other heavily recruited players because he helped our recruiting efforts tremendously down the stretch. Scott never did anything as a player, but he helped push a lot of other kids to Tuscaloosa who have done very well.
Wherever he ends up, and it looks like South Alabama for now, best of luck to him.
