Georgia Tech lands 3 commitments, hopes Stephon Tuitt makes 4

Georgia Tech enjoyed a fruitful weekend of recruiting as it hosted a number of recruits on the The Flats. The Yellow Jackets welcomed three more members to their rapidly-growing Class of 2011 on Sunday.

Athlete Corey Dennis of Troy, Ala.; offensive lineman Errin Joe of Lakeland, Fla.; and athlete Demontevious Smith of Monroe each committed after official visits on the Tech campus. That gives Georgia Tech a total of 21 commitments. Thanks to some attrition, the Yellow Jackets are expected to sign the NCAA maximum of 25 players in this class.

“I actually wasn’t expecting to commit this weekend,” said Smith, who chose the Jackets over Virginia Tech. “I was just expecting a good experience. I definitely got that and more. It was even better than I expected. So I went ahead and committed.”

Smith goes by the shortened first name of Demon, which is pronounced duh-MONN. Tech is hopeful his pledge will lead to at least one more commitment.

Smith is the Monroe Area High School teammate of four-star defensive end Stephon Tuitt. Tuitt is currently committed to Notre Dame but decided to visit Tech this weekend after his basketball game was canceled.

Tuitt could not immediately reached for comment.

“I don’t know what he’s going to do,” Smith said. “I didn’t get any kind of answer from him. As soon as I saw him I started teasing him and saying, ‘you gonna come with me?’ I know he’s feeling pressure both ways.”

Regardless, Monroe Area coach Matt Fligg said Smith is a good get for the Jackets.

“I have been on [Tech recruiting coordinator Andy McCollum] about Demontevious since last year,” Fligg said. “He has the ability to make the big play anytime he touches the ball. His character and attitude is the best I’ve coached and I’m old.”

As the Purple Hurricanes’ quarterback this past season, Smith (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) led them to an 11-2 record and first playoff appearance in years. He paced their option attack with 1,795 yards rushing and 25 TDs — including 13 runs of more than 50 yards — and added 431 yards passing and another five scores.

Initially, Tuitt was not going visit Tech this weekend because of a conflict with a basketball game. But Monroe Area ended up canceling all of their games due to weather problems and schedule backups.

Joe (6-4, 285),  highly-touted offensive guard out of Lake Gibson High. He was the first of the three to commit this weekend. The three-star prospect had at least dozen offers, including Florida State and Miami in-state and Stanford and Duke outside the state.

Dennis (6-2, 205) played quarterback at Troy’s Henderson High School. He is expected to play either quarterback or wide receiver for Tech, according to JacketsOnline.com. The only other offers for this under-the-radar prospect were from Troy and UAB, according to Rivals.com.

I’ll have more updates on Tech recruiting as details become available today.

Good for Tech. I hope they keep up the good work. I am getting tired of watching good talent go towaist in Athens. I hope they are as fun to watch next year as they were their championship year.

I’m anxiously awaiting when Wrex shows up. This clown has a Twitter page and is sending messages to Vad Lee telling him not to come to Tech.

You know, most UGA fans are fine people. But this clown reflects nothing but the worst of their fans.

UGA got burned last year on that, RRT. No, you can’t blame Richt for learning his lesson if he thinks it helps him lure Crowell.

Tuitt is just humoring Tech, he will never go play on a team like that. Tech’s defense is horrible and Notre Dame’s continues to get better. No talent and a program that can’t even beat GEORGIA when they suck. No wonder the kid wants to play for Coach Kelley.

Irish on the rise, I was in the great city of South Bend in 2007, less than four years ago to see my Yellow Jackets destroy Notre Dame. Yes, you have changed coaches, again and again, and it really doesn’t seem to matter much. Watch out for Navy again next year since that is the closest you will get to Georgia Tech.

Good weekend so far, we stole 1 from VT (Smith) & another from FSU & many other big-time suitors(Joe). Hopefully, Dennis can boost are “not-so-special teams” play immediately. It would be great to close this class out with Cooper & Flowers. It would even better to close with those 2 & get either Tuitt or Vaughters or both. Welcome to the Flats, Gentlemen & GO JACKETS !!!!!!!

George Stein- I agree, Wrex is the most juvenile of anyone on blogs discussing college football. He used to say that he was a GT alum/fan, but with his recent posts and his “reporting” of violations of the GT program he has become a laughingstock. He uses many aliases here.

Usually when the players are on an official they wear their HS number . Sylve was #3 but that number’s already taken (Trent “BAD A@$” Richardson) so maybe they gave him 11 to wear. Anyone what # Harrow wore in HS ? RRTDawgs they showed some interest in him earlier in the process but I’m not sure if he has an offer. I’ll check.

No worries bigtime.

For some perspective though, Da’Rick was posing in the locker room at the Butts-Mehre building last year in a UGA #3 jersey last year a week before his signing day flip to UT.

Schools do these little things with all the kids. Letting them “picture putting the jersey on”. I honestly wouldn’t read much into it.

I honestly think you guys have a decent chance to snag Clowney away from SC, all gonna depend on momma there. Hahaha

Crowell, for our (UGA) sake, is hopefully just enjoying the free trip. Why compete when you’ve got the job from Day 1 in Athens. Fits the bill of kids not wanting to really work hard for anything anymore.

Chip,

I know we will hear about Vaughters and Tuitt the second they decide what they are going to do.

Can you update us on some of the lower profiled players that will make a huge difference for us next year? Cooper and Flowers have been mentioned before. Are there some others that are expected to visit before Feb 4? Also, is there any truth to this Vad Lee rumor? From what I have heard, he has been all Tech from day 1 and has helped in our recruiting. It would be sad to see him jump ship as he has a good shot at being number 1 next year.

UGA is UGA they bring in the top 10 classes and end up about the same as Tech. One UGA fan said it best, take UGA’s recruiting class ranking and add 15 to it and that’s about where they end up each year in the polls. I would add to that by saying take Tech’s recruiting class ranking and subtract about 15 and that’s about where Tech ends up each year in the polls. What does that tell you about the quality of the coaches and the athletes they recruit. Not to mention the Fulmer cup rankings.

Chip,

While we are on recruiting, can we talk about potential basketball coaches for next year? Word in the GT circuits is Hewitt is DEFINITELY out next year, money has been raised and it’s a done deal. Who do you think Tech should try to get as a new coach to return our program from the depths of hell back into the powerhouse it should be?
