Georgia Bulldogs offer scholarship to Isaiah Crowell’s close friend

As Isaiah Crowell prepared to leave Columbus for Tuscaloosa and his official visit to Alabama Friday afternoon, Georgia was making moves behind the scenes to try to ensure that the state’s No. 1 player comes their way.

The Bulldogs offered a scholarship to Crowell’s teammate and close friend Quintavious Harrow on Thursday, Carver-Columbus coach Dell McGee confirmed. Better known as “Cootie” to his family and friends, Harrow (5-foot-10, 180 pounds) played a linebacker/safety position known as the “pony” in the Tigers’ 3-5-3 defense. He’s expected to played defensive back in college.

“It’s good to see Quintavious get a great offer like UGA,” McGee said.

By all accounts, Georgia is the only school from which Harrow has received an offer so far. The only reference to him among the recruiting services is an account of him running a 4.46-second 40-yard dash — pretty impressive — at the Scout Showcase combine in Atlanta last summer.

“Cootie? I really don’t know too much about it,” Crowell said as he prepared to leave his Columbus home with his parents Friday afternoon. “I heard that [he'd been offered by UGA] but I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about it. His phone’s not working right now.”

Crowell said he believes Harrow recently obtained a qualifying ACT score and that has boosted interest from college recruiters.

“He’s been overlooked this whole season,” Crowell said. “It’s about time he got some offers. I’m happy for him.”

Crowell was asked if he felt like the offer to Harrow was a ploy by the Bulldogs to get him to sign with them on national signing day.

“We’re really close. That’s true,” he said. “But I don’t know whether it has anything to do with me or not. I do know he’s a good player.”

Crowell, a five-star prospect and the No. 1-ranked player in the AJC Fab 50, has narrowed his choices to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. He takes official visits to UGA next weekend and Auburn on Jan. 28. As of now he expects to announce his decision on national signing day.

Crowell is one of a number of elite recruits that will be in Tuscaloosa for official visits this weekend. Also expected are Valdosta’s Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome — both of whom will make their decisions public on Thursday — and DE Jadeveon Clowney of Rock Hill, S.C., the consensus No. 1 prospect in the nation.

So what does Crowell expect on his official visit to Alabama? “I don’t know. I’m just trying to have a good time is all,” he said.

Asked if he expected to get a lot of pressure from Bama coaches to commit, he laughed, “Yeah, I do.”

The highlight film on this kid lists him at 6-1 and 215 pounds. Is he 5-10 or 6-1 big difference.

Chip, if Drew is attending both announcements, are the annoucements for Mitchell and Rome still separate? Why the move from Austin’s steakhouse? You can do some kind of scarfing in there.

Richt wouldn’t throw away a scholarship last year to get Da Rick and I don’t blame him – sounds like Richt is going all out to get Crowell and hopefully put a plug in the sinking Richt cruise ship.

WOW…this smells.

Either CMR is as slimy as I’ve always thought (funny how he leaves FSU and all their problems disappear)…OR

We haven’t given Crowell as much credit as he maybe once deserves “hmm, coach I am still on the fence, but my best friend still hasn’t gotten an offer anywhere and I know he’s a dawg fan…”

As much as I hate it, kid might just be the smartest guy in Athens come summer. hahaha

CMR is so scared he has to result to this? He should have bailed and taken the Vandy job, because he won’t be in a power conference again unless he is at a bottom feeder. He also should make sure his resume is up to date for those OC positions he can interview for!

I think it’s a good idea. The kid’s been on winning teams. UGA has recruited player that didn’t know how to win. Obviously, Carver-Columbus isn’t a 1 or 2 man show. If he’s willing to work, I’d rather have a winner who’s willing to work, than a 5 star that’s not willing to work and not going to win.

Desperation has arrived in Athens. Bama lost a 5 star Safety to Cal last yr when CNS would not give a
scholly to his half brother who was transfering from Buffalo (QB). One player will not make or break a program like UA. Most not be the case at Ga

This is how we cemented Alex Ogletree last year, when we ofered his much less talented brother, Zander.

Then when Zander got to Athens, he developed into a great FB and saw lots of time on Special Teams.

I like this practice. When you have the scholarships to offer, there is nothing wrong with it.

This kid is a good athlete. I am proud that UGA offered him and believe he will fit in with our defense. Everyone has been waiting on him because of grades. He just passed the admission test for college and UGA gave him an offer. If UGA doesnt get IC then this kid is still a good pickup.

@Joe Mayo…good points…agree…don’t really know what the deal is here, but he’s a pretty good player that may not be a 4 or 5 star player, but if he has heart and the will to succeed, he will and it will be a great pick-up for the dawgs…I think the dawgs beat some others to the punch with thiis young man…I don’t have a problem with especially if the kid can do some things to help us down the road…Its so easy for people to forget that we have in years past gotten several players that were not on anyone’s radar and they became, not just good players, but great…I hear all the time why didn’t we go after this person or that person, heck i’m guilty of that myself, but it may be serving another purpose for us to get this guy, who knows, but if he gives us his commitment, then lets welcome him to the dawg nation and wish him well..go dawgs

What if crowell stiffs UGA and then Richt won’t be able to revoke the offer to his friend? This will blow up in Rich’t face. But I have to believe there is an agreement with Crowell already to join UGA and this offer to his pal is the deal sealer. A lot of kids are taking visits to other schools these last few weeks just because they can.

UGA wins all but 1 game in 2010 if not for: Green suspension and turnovers and bad officiating early….and everyone wants to fire the coach! 4 turnovers by the freshman QB against Florida alone and still went to OT. Lost to SC due to fumble at end of game on the road against a VERY good team early in the season without Green, Should I go on? So many UGA fans are fickle and cannot see the forest for the trees and that includes the ignorant Tarkenton! UGA is fine regardless of the naysayers 2 cents who most of them probably still live at home with their parents! The UGA AD needs to tell UGA fans the same thing as the Michigan Ad recently told UM fans, get behind the program or find another school… so will the real UGA fans stand up and support your state school through thick and thin now and this will be turned around quickly or otherwise we might end up with another Donnan or Goff or WORSE! Coaches and players need your support NOW. They need a lift up not a beating down. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM! I personally will be writing the AD and Coach and players to give them a vote of confidence and show support. That is the best thing any could do agree or disagree because Richt is here and not going anywhere so support your team or root for GT! A little support means the most when times are tought to the ones going throught it so decide to help make it a quick as possible recovery or as long as possible.

Fact is look how few college prospects play in the dome during the championship games. Several players may not have the measurables but if they’re on winning teams, the players are doing something right. Whether it’s the fact that they know how to win, or they’re coachable, or they maximize their abilities. Each of those qualities are valuable at the next level.
