With the increasing number of national high school all-star games in recent years, some of the luster had been lost off the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) North-South Game. But that’s not the case this year. Some of the state’s best players have signed up for Georgia’s annual all-star showcase, which will be played this afternoon at 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

AJC Super 11 selections Jay Rome (tight end, Valdosta) and Xzavier Dickson (defensive end, Griffin) highlight rosters that include four-star wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell of Valdosta, four-star offensive tackle Xzavier Ward of Colquitt County, four Georgia Tech commitments and three Georgia commitments.

Part of the reason for the impressive lineup is Georgia players this year are allowed to play in more than one all-star game. Dickson, Mitchell and Rome are also playing in the Under Armour All-America game next week in Florida. Several players played the week before Christmas in county all-star games in Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett.

But as I’ve noted since national signing day last February, Georgia’s class of 2011 is loaded and that’s indicative in the GACA game. Other notables in playing this afternoon include record-setting quarterback Taylor Heineke of Collins Hill, record-setting wide receiver Demarco Robinson of M.L. King, Georgia Tech-bound running backs Zach Laskey of Starr’s Mill and Broderick Snoddy of Carrollton, Georgia-bound safeties Corey Moore and Chris Sanders, AJC Class AAAA Offensive Player of the Year Josh Clemons and Auburn commitment C.J. Uzomah.

Here’s a link to the full roster. Stay tuned for details from the game.

Of course, the North-South Game is just one of many all-star games being conducted all over the South during this holiday season. On Dec. 17, there was the Shrine Bowl between star players from North Carolina and South Carolina in Spartanburg, S.C. (South Carolina won 42-10, for what it’s worth). This Friday there is the fifth annual Offense-Defense Bowl in Myrtle Beach, S.C., (4 p.m.) and the inaugural NUC “All-World Gridiron Classic” in Charleston, S.C. (6 p.m.).

Georgians playing in the O-D Bowl include AJC Super 11 WR Chris Conley of North Paulding (UGA commit), LB Amarlo Herrera of North Clayton (UGA), LB Justin Garrett of Tucker (Auburn) and OL Kyle Harris of Pepperell (South Carolina).

The NUC roster includes 11 Georgians: TE Christian Reeves of McDonough (Virginia Tech), LB Jabari Hunt-Days of Powder Springs (Georgia Tech), DB Ra’Chard Pippens of McDonough (Stanford), DE Barron Dixon of Alpharetta (undecided), OL Alan Posey of Athens (Tennessee), DB David Stevenson of Stone Mountain (UConn), RB Zarold Wilder of Powder Springs (undecided), DB Kadetrix Marcus of Stone Mountain (South Carolina), DB Jared Boyd of Stone Mountain (Duke), OL David Andrews of Alpharetta (Georgia) and OL Watts Dantzler of Dalton (Georgia).

Speaking of the O-D Bowl, Georgia-bound quarterback Christian LeMay of Matthews, N.C., was orginally slated to play for the East team. But the midyear enrollee, who completed his high school education via home schooling, was ruled ineligible because he practiced with the Bulldogs during bowl preparations on campus before Christmas. LeMay was replaced on the East roster by quarterback Vad Lee of Durham, N.C., a Georgia Tech commitment. Lee said in a Rivals.com report he and LeMay are actually pretty good friends.

Next week comes the truly national all-star games. I’ll be at the Under Armour All-America Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Wednesday (Jan. 5, ESPN). Three days later the “granddaddy” of high school all-star games — the U.S. Army All-American Bowl — will be played in San Antonio, Tex. (Jan. 8, NBC). The best of the best from Georgia will be represented in both games.

Ten Georgians will participate in the Under Armour, which begins practices this weekend in Orlando.  They are Carver-Columbus RB Isaiah Crowell (undecided), Pope OL Thomas O’Reilly (Auburn), Carver-Columbus DT Gabe Wright (undecided), Troup RB Quan Bray (undecided), Tucker LB James Vaughters (Stanford), Mitchell County WR Justin Scott-Wesley (Georgia), Dickson, Mitchell and Rome (all undecided). Several of those guys are considering making their college announcements during the game, so be sure to tune in.

Six “Peach-staters” will be in San Antonio: East Hall DE Sterling Bailey (Georgia), Thomas County Central DE Ray Drew (undecided) Griffin DB Corey Moore (Georgia), Grady DB Damian Swann (undecided), Monroe Area DE Stephon Tuitt (Notre Dame) and Eagles Landing Christian DB Avery Walls (California). Georgia commitment Zach DeBell, an offensive tackle from Tarpon Springs, Fla., will also play in that game.

So as you can see, there is a lot of postseason football activity going on the next couple of weeks. I’ll be following it all very closely so check back here often for updates.

Okay lets take a look at three true freshman from last years class who weren’t highly touted coming out. Gates, the young freshman lineman was the last recruit we offered and ONLY because we couldn’t sign someone else. He started three games and played in three others and coaches are already saying he is a star in the making. Hutson Mason was another guy who wasn’t being chased by all the big schools and he looked like a gamer in limited action. And I read a story in the athens banner herald about Michael bennent and the coaches and other players were raving about how well he was doing in practice. In fact Richt said he almost dropped his redshirt after AJ was suspended. And what do all these players have in common? They all dreamed of wearing red and black and prayed that they would get offered.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t go after some blue chip recruits but we need to focus on getting some of these home grown talents who want to be Dogs. Our coaches need to roll up their sleeves and do a better job of identifying some of these young men that we have been overlooking in the past. The hard working modest kids who dream of getting on that field. The dedicated three star recruits who come in and work hard in the weight room and on the field have just as good of a chance of turning into something special as these so called 5 stars. And history proves that I am right. David Pollack, Thomas Davis, and Justin Houston are just a few examples of players with 3 stars or less.

@layinlow….have to say i agree with you, we need some players that want to be dawgs and that want to wear the “G”..I don’t care so much about the stars just want winners with alot of heart and will give it their all, thats all anyone can asd…People like Pollack, Davis and Houston to name a few did just that…I think way too much is emphasis is put on the number of stars, but thats what creates excitement..for me the excitement is getting the “W’s”…go dawgs

I heard one source has said Ray Drew doesn’t want to play OLB in 3-4 Defense. Maybe Chip will elaborate win he gets his post sometime.

I find it interesting that both of their mothers thought that the “z” was needed in their names.

Drew has the size and frame to play DE, but he might have to redshirt to put on a bit of weight. Not too many SEC teams start DL as true freshmen. But who knows

As far as the 3-4 defense goes, these players may not be comfortable in the 3-4 but since thats the basic defense you see in the NFL then i would think it would benefit them to have some experience in that scheme…of course if you can play on the next lever whether you are in a 4-3, 3-4 or etc. you can excell if you have game…But i see the thought process if the coaches are recruiting someone for OLB and they had not played that position in high school…so we may lose some kids because of the 3-4 but also we may gain some because of the scheme, just too early to see how our recruiting will be affected…In my opinion, if the Coaches, especially our DC does his job, then the players will want to play for him, especially if he can get some of them to the NFL…go dawgs

First off, Happy Holidays to everyone.

The Auburn “family” has thought that Drew has been a lean for the Tigers for a while. I think UGA isn’t completely out of it but they are behind the 8 ball when it comes to Drew. Don’t worry DAWG fans your signing class will be in the top 5 when all is said and done with or without Drew. I wouldn’t buy stock in anything any of these high profile recruits say until their name goes on the dotted line Feb. 2nd. ROLL TIDE

The South dominated the first half, failed to score because of red zone fumbles and trailed 16-0 at half. North played much better in second half (well actually from mid way through 2nd quarter thru rest of game) and won 22-0. Offensive stars were Heinicke (3 TDs thrown and a bunch of yards). He threw a TD to the other two QBs, Uzomah and Kent Rollins. Jay Rome caught a bunch of balls and looked like a man among boys in the def backfield when he caught one. Snoddy played real good in the second half. Tons of big defensive hits but no one in particular stood WAYYY out. I think Kitray Solomon from Baldwin was south MVP as he had two sacks (number in program is wrong but only kid from Baldwin :) ) Fun game to watch. Uzomah is huge!! Not much of a QB but HUGE!! be a good tightend etc

@Brian,
I’ve stated on here many times that Malcom Mitchell is the real deal. I’ll even take it up a notch. Whereever he goes, he will start right away. I’d also go so far as to say that he will put up better numbers than AJ Green before he finishes his college career. He won’t be a Dawg unfortunately but I’ll still be a fan of his. He’ll prove me to be right about all of this eventually…….take it to the bank!!!

Malcom Mitchell played very good first half but rolled an ankle and did not play second half. He is a player but I will have to disagree with Valdosta Cat and say he will not start right away. He will probably get some PT but not that great yet. I hope he does but those guys at the next level are also very good. Rome played very well.

Where’s all the Mark Richt haters now that CJ Uzomah is playing TE? Y’all were on here yelling for Richt to recruit the kid as a QB. Auburn is not even recruiting the kid as a QB. You all do know that only two schools recruited Cam Newton as a QB coming out of high school.

Malcom Mitchell and X. Dickson will be redshirting in the fall at Bama. I see UGA getting Crowell and Rome. Ray Drew will make a huge mistake if he chooses Aub over UGA. Auburn is a 4 or 5 loss team minus Newton. If Newton goes pro and OC Malzahn takes the Maryland job… Aub will be back to 7-5.
