JUCO star DE ‘Tank’ Carradine picks FSU over Georgia

Cornelius “Tank” Carradine, one of the top junior college players in the country, signed a national letter-of-intent with Florida State this afternoon, his high school coach confirmed.

Carradine (6-5, 265), a sophomore defensive end from Butler County (Kan.) Community College who led the NJCAA with 16 sacks, chose the Seminoles over Georgia and Ohio State, in that order, Cincinnati-Taft coach Mike Martin said. He will transfer to FSU for the beginning of the winter/spring semester in January.

“He said it seemed like they wanted him more than anybody else,” Martin said shortly after faxing the signed LOI about 1:15 Wednesday afternoon. “They really pursued him hard.”

So did the Bulldogs, who had Carradine in for an official visit late last week. They felt like Carradine could help fill the void that could be left with the possible departure of junior Justin Houston to the NFL.

Click THIS LINK to this morning’s blog that will provide more details on Carradine and his career.

Meanwhile, Georgia continues to be in the hunt for John Jenkins, a 6-foot-4, 340-pound defensive tackle/nose guard from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Bulldogs coaches will be meeting with Jenkins and his family in Connecticut this weekend. More on him later.

Wasn’t Jakar Hamilton the top rated JUCO last year? How well did he work out?

Chip, there are a lot of kids who will be graduating and moving on, plus three or four kids who suffered career-ending injuries.

FSU currently has 73 scholarship players.
Noles lose 9 to graduation. That’s 66.
Three guys won’t take a 5th year. 66-3=63.
Four have career ending injuries. 63-4= 59.
You always have 1 or 2 transfer for playing time or discipline or grades. 59-2= 57

FSU will sign 28. 28+57=85. No oversigning by FSU.

Hope that helps.

We got into this late. He was never a UGA recruit. We needed to focus on other recruits more and we will see how that ends up – mainly the Georgia recruits like Drew, Swann, Crowell, Mitchell, Rome, et cetera. If we get Jenkins then that is more important than Carradine. If we stuff the middle the linebacker does not have to be as gifted like they did this year.

Look at how well Hamilton worked out and he was top Juco recruit last year. So not concerned with Carridine. I would rather have Drew and the kids coming out of Georgia than a recruit out of Juco. We have more upside with the kids coming out.

If we don’t get some of those guys – Drew, Crowell, Mitchell, Swann, Rome, Dickinson, et cetera (not necessarily all of them) but half of them – then we start worrying as Georgia fans. But Richt and company have been recruiting these guys hard and they came in very late on Carradine. The same is probably true with Jenkins if we don’t get him but he will be a bigger impact if we get him than Carradine would have. Justin could possible (slim) stay. But you have Jarvis Jones, et cetera that can potentially fill his shoes.

Worry on Feb 2 if the key state of Georgia players leave the state to play for someone else like Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, or Auburn.

Well, I’m waiting, and we’re still losing the close ones. Someone please tell me again that we’re late bloomers, we’re going to finish strong, and we do our best work under pressure.

Ughh… I know and it’s driving me crazy trying to pick them or Stanford. VT lost to Boise and fillintheblankDiv1-AAteam, and they have been on a tear ever since. I kept picking them to lose over the season, and I kept getting burned. I wanted to pick them over Stanford, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Stanford is pretty darn good. This one may come down to a coin flip.

@RxDawg Stanford. if Stanford didn’t crapped the bed against Oregon they’d be playing in the MNC game. By that I mean that they brought their C game vs Oregon. FSU still put up 33 on VPI with a back up QB and our starting RB out. Stanford will put 40+ on them…

@RXDawg, Naganole… I have been up in VA for the last 20 years or so, and my sister went to VA Tech. The problem with picking them is that they don’t have much success in big bowl games, for whatever reason. Remember the Sugar bowl against UGA? They have a great staff that coaches up 3* guys, but they get in trouble against teams with deep benches. I’m not sure if Stanford is that team, but Tech’s bowl record lately speaks for itself.
