4-star DB Avery Walls of ELCA to announce decision

One of the stranger recruiting journeys one will ever see will come to an end Tuesday when four-star defensive back Avery Walls of McDonough announces his college choice.

The 5-11, 185-pound senior from Eagles Landing Christian Academy landed about 30 scholarship offers in the last year — most of them of the major-college variety — but he never got one from the two major colleges in this state.

But that’s just fine with Walls, who always favored the idea of going away to school anyway. And way away he will go as his three finalists are Cal, Michigan and Oregon. His announcement is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. at the school.

“I chose them because of academics,” said Walls, who transferred to Class A ECLA from Class AAAAA Union Grove before this past season. “Oregon has the No. 1 sports marketing program in the country.”

Not sure if that’s a hint but we’ll show up to find out.

Well, if academics is a priority for him, it’s Cal, hands down. Michigan and Oregon are great schools but Berkeley is Berkeley.

Not sure why no in-state school offered, but I’m just as glad to see Walls headed out of the SEC. At least this decision won’t hurt either school any time soon.

Berkeley is Berkeley only if you are a freaking Obama loving liberal. If you want to make money other than selling Green products go somewhere else.

Heard thru the Gator grapevine that Muschamp is going to make a strong run at Crowell in the next 2 weeks.Anyone heard of this? In the offensive system Muschamp will run he needs a Lattimore type feature back.

You wonder when McGarity will ever come out and verbally stand behind Richt for the long haul. McGarity needs to extend Richt’s contract for 1 year through 2014, then come out and let the recruits know he’s 110% behind his coach. If not, it will kill recruiting, it will kill morale, and Richt will have another tough season (see 2010 for McGarity’s experiment)

All or nothing.

Don’t know where Crowell will end up, but assure you it won’t be Fla…they have plenty of RB’s who and are still trying to figure out how to use them…I doubt that you will see the fla offense change out of the spread they run anytime soon, but i guess it will depend who the OC is, but since Meyer still has an office of Campus, i think he still will have an influence on this team and the type of coaches that believe in his system…Still seems strange to me that he would hang around, i know if it were me taking over a program i would not like having the former coach hanging around, unless he was the AD or something in that capacity…but what do i care, i’m a dawg fan, so what they do is not really a huge deal to me…go dawgs

Don’t be fooled by the ’student’ athletes at cal. If academics and success in football really matters to this young man, then he would go to Stanford. There’s no denying that Stanford definitely trumps cal and Oregon in the Pac10 when it comes to academics AND football success.
Plus Stanford has more local alumni clubs in the Atlanta area than cal and Oregon combined.

Cal is superior to Michigan and Oregon in academics. Didn’t the modern computer and everything associated with it originate from Berkeley?

The in-state schools probably (and this is pure conjecture) didn’t offer b/c of academic doubts about whether he’ll qualify. When an athlete transfers to a tiny private school right before his senior year, it’s often b/c he/she doesn’t anticipate passing the state graduation tests. Private schools don’t have such tests…

How exactly is Stanford(or Cal) better than Oregon at football? Oregon is a sleeping beast that has finally woken up might be the “Florida” of the next decade with all the Nike money, facilities and Chip Kelly. Stanford had a nice 2 year run and will go back to being a doormat once JH and Luck bolt. If he wants to play in BCS games, get a top sports marketing degree and play in the NFL Oregon is a no brainer.

To those of you trashing Muschamp about his recruiting skills-He’s a straight shooter and doesn’t “trash” other schools in the process..He points out what his school best offers the prospect and lets the chips fall..he is relentless in his pursuit and a graet salesman…He’s a class act and it’ll be a different feeling watching Florida..I think the Dawgs fans most hated team is now AUBURN!

Also, Bush has nothing to do with anything either. This is a FOOTBALL blog/article, try to keep it that way. Go luck to the young man and I hope everything works out well for him in college.

Say what you will about UGA, but they consistently recruit and sign the best DBs in the state. This has been the case for a LONG time. I trust Richt’s ability to evaluate talent in the secondary and if they choose not to offer this kid, then I’m sure there is a good reason.
