Add another AJC Super 11 name to Georgia’s list of official visitors this weekend.

Nick Marshall, a quarterback/cornerback from Wilcox County, has decided to join the parade of stars heading to Athens this weekend. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete becomes the sixth member of the AJC Super 11 to make that decision.

Marshall will join fellow Super 11s North Paulding WR Chris Conley, Griffin DE/OLB Xzavier Dickson, Thomas County Central DE/OLB Ray Drew, Valdosta TE Jay Rome and Grady DB Damian Swann for their one-and-only, NCAA-allowed expenses-paid trip to UGA. All of the visitors, which will include most of the Bulldogs 16 verbal commitments so far, will attend the Senior Gala, UGA’s annual end-of-the-year banquet, Saturday night at the Classic Center in downtown Athens.

“They talked to him about it last week and Coach [Bryan] McClendon came down [Tuesday] and they decided this would be the best time for him to go,” Wilcox County coach Mark Ledford said. “We looked at his schedule and there were only two Saturdays he wouldn’t have a basketball game, this weekend and one in January. So we decided it was best for him to go on right now.”

Marshall, who committed to the Bulldogs last June, is rated a four-star prospect as a guard in basketball and will also play that sport at Georgia.

To that end, Marshall and UGA decided he would not play quarterback. It would be too difficult to play that position in football while trying to play two sports in college. Marshall is slated to player cornerback and kick returner with the Bulldogs. But he’s expected to garner some touches as a specialty player on offense.

Based on his high school production, Georgia would be well advised to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.

Marshall finished his career as Georgia’s all-time leader in career touchdown passes with 103. As a senior, he completed 55 percent of his passes for 2,728 yards and 41 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. He also rushed for 684 yards and nine touchdowns, had six interceptions on defense, including two retured for touchdowns, and a punt return for a touchdown on his only attempt. That’s 53 TDs accounted for.

“He’s actually really good at returning punts but we had to let him get a drink of water some time,” Ledford said. “It’s my understanding he’ll have the opportunity to do that at Georgia. I think they’ll use him in as many capabilities as possible.”

Marshall’s senior basketball season hasn’t gotten underway yet. The first game is this Friday. The Patriots lost only one starter — 6-foot-6 forward Lonnie Outlaw, a Georgia football signee — off last year’s state championship contender. Marshall, a shooting guard, averaged 27 points per game on that team.

Outlaw is being replaced in the lineup by his younger brother, Jonathan Howard, a sophomore who also happens to be a standout wide receiver. He had 28 catches for 295 yards this past season.

Outlaw has another year at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville before he can suit up for the Bulldogs.

“I heard some really good things about how well he’s doing over there,” Ledford said of Outlaw, who is Marshall’s cousin. “The coaches tell me he’s gotten stronger and put on some weight. I think he’s up to 210 now. They say he’s improving every week.”

Meanwhile, Wilcox County, the 2009 Class A state football champions, was ousted in the quarterfinals by Wesleyan this year.

“It’s tough to repeat,” Ledford said. “Everybody from Game 1 to the last game wanted to be the team to knock us off. It seemed like every week we got got teams’ best shots. And I thought single-A was a little more stackded this year.”

Savannah Christian and Clinch County will face off for the championship in the Georgia Dome on Saturday.

“Hard to tell [who will win],” Ledford said. “They’re both two very good teams with two completely different styles. It’ll probably be a good one. We’ll pulling for out region so we’re pulling for Clinch.”

Mr. Marshall is going to be one heck of a player.

For all the grief the recruiters have taken on these blogs this year, UGA has been bringing in some excellent skill guys. If they can find a JUCO nose guard and some run blocking, this team will be in the SEC Championship game next year.

“If they can find a JUCO nose guard and some run blocking, this team will be in the SEC Championship game next year.”

So … you predicting that Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee are going to be on probation next year or something? And Nick Marshall is being shunted to CB because Mark Richt doesn’t like “athletic” QBs. Charlie Ward was the Heisman Trophy winner at FSU at QB, and a 1st round draft pick as a guard in the NBA. Rusty LaRue was Wake Forest’s starting QB and shooting guard at around the same time, and UGA had a TE who was the 6th man during the Ron Jirsa era. Plus, guys play football and baseball all the time.

Marshall is just getting bad advice. He is agreeing to terms that favor UGA and not himself, just as D.J. Shockley did before him, and there is no one around willing to tell him different. That is what happens when one program (UGA) so thoroughly dominates this state. Everybody in that kid’s high school and tiny county, including his high school coach, are probably big time UGA fans. They are likely telling him “Boy, you just go play for those Bulldogs and do whatever they say … they’ll take GOOD care of you up there … you can trust ‘em, especially coach Richt!”

I still remember when Richt was OC at FSU. They would go recruit the top dual threat QBs in the country promising to turn them into the next Charlie Ward. Once they arrived on campus, those guys weren’t even allowed to compete for the QB job in practice. They’d get switched from QB to WR or DB as soon as they signed their verbal commitments. “Saint Richt” is no different from “Saint Bobby”, except that the latter was actually a good football coach. Or at least he seemed to be when he was beating up on ACC teams … when he played against Miami or the better SEC teams, not so much …

1eyedJack:
.
Not if he can’t catch, can’t run routes, can’t separate from defenders, and lacks lower body strength. Look at NFL rosters and notice that you see few NFL WRs over 6′4″, and virtually none that are 6′6″ or higher. There is a reason for that. As few guys over 6′4″ have WR ability and skill, most of the taller guys wind up putting on a few pounds and moving to TE (or defense). If it was the Big 12, Pac-10 or a mid-major conference, a 6′6″ WR would be something to get excited about. But in the SEC, where virtually every team (even Vanderbilt) has at least one DB that will play in the NFL, don’t count the chickens on the super-tall WRs until they’re hatched.

The good news is that he can probably add 30 pounds and be a very athletic TE. The bad news is that UGA already recruits a ton of talented TEs (and FBs) that Richt and Bobo have no idea how to utilize. (Orson Charles, there is still time to transfer.)

Right now we have only 2 DL commitments…. A DT and a DE. Two other recruits listed in this piece as attending Saturday; listed as DE/OLB. Likely smaller in size if considered possible LB material.

Nick Marshall is doing what Nick Marshall believes is best for him. He committed after LeMay. He knows he will not play QB (unless in WildCat scenarios). There is only one QB postion, and sometimes FIVE DB positions. If he is considering early playing time, DB is best for him. And if he is thinking about playing in the league, DB is best also.

Plus he may just love UGA and want to go there. Nothing wrong with that.

Most super 11 UGA players don’t excel under Richt, so I suppose we are even. The black hole for talent gets another one to ruin.

And Curry broke most of UNC’s passing records and rushing records for a QB while he was there. He was a pretty serviceable basketball player at UNC, but would have been a freakin’ star basketball player playing in Athens.

Hope he doesn’t make the mistake of taking one of UGA’s “football” majors. UGA is a pretty crappy school for putting athletes in majors that will make them successful after football.

Gerald,
I don’t expect UT or SC to be that great next year. I expect UF to be considerably better than they were this year. So, I think next year is back to normal in the SEC East. You will notice that I said IF UGA finds a NG and run blocking they will be in the SEC Championship game. That may be a very big “if” but I stand by the statement. This team is very-very close to being stellar. The only real problem has been UGA’s inability to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

As for your comments on the QB situation:

If you haven’t noticed, Aaron Murray is an “atheletic QB” and Richt likes him just fine. Nick Marshall may or may not be able to play QB in the SEC, but moving to another position in college isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Former high school QB Hines Ward might be able to shed some light on the subject. Besides, shut down corners do quite well in the NFL. Go ask Champ Bailey.

DJ Shockley was 100% Georgia all the way and he did what he thought was best for himself. He knew that David Greene wasn’t going anywhere and he decided not to transfer when no Georgia fan would’ve blamed him if he did. DJ Shockley won an SEC Championship and will be a beloved Dawg forever! I was at the SEC Championship game and saw the love he got afterward…it was awesome. AND DJ got his shot at the NFL to boot. I’d say that Nick Marshall could do much worse than being the next DJ Shockley.

Also, your comments regarding tight ends are not correct. UGA has put a bunch of TE in the NFL and they are one of the few teams running a pro style offense that utilizes the TE. Orson Charles will be a star before he leaves UGA…he’s close to being one now.

I didn’t deflect, I answered directly. You mentioned St. Simons, and so did I. My point was anyone could have posted as “St. Simons.” That fact also means anyone posting “45-42″ also could have been (and probably was) the same person.

Any Tech fan bragging about a win from two years ago is obviously a moron, especially since the series has been so lopsided. Who would possibly brag about that? On the other hand, if you were a UGA fan and wanted to make the Tech fan base look really bad, wouldn’t making it look like they’re still bragging about a victory from two years ago be a perfect way to do just that?

It’s really not that complicated…

Your post about good and bad year trends is truly funny. GT has had one good year in a decade, now that my friend is a trend. It’s also notable that during your teams one good year they lost to the dawgs (again) and got smoked in their bowl game (again)

Granted this year was a huge downfall for UGA at 6-6 but last year we did have a winning record, beat our in-state rival and won our bowl. Doubt that will EVER happen at Tech…

UGA historically does well in recruiting skill athletes that play wide out, QB or d back. Thes athletes do not dominate SEC games, however. UGA really has been for years deficient in recruiting all world SEC caliber linemen in BULK numbers. When we get them to town, Searels does not develop them, nor does Gardner. They lack grit and a case of the meanies. Candy a–es they all are.

Gardner is only fair BUT last year’s D line sent three to the NFL but beyond that, UGA d lines are horrible. This year we lost every game and nearly lost to hapless GT because our D line in the middle was horrible. No NOSe that is a hoss. Period. We are unmanly in the middle. The reason in 09 that GT could not do a thing is the 09 line of Atkins, Owens and Kade Weston. They were impenatrable. GT had to head out side and we stopped them there for about 85% of the game in 09.

I suspect that we will hire two new line coaches when the football season is over. I really expect a bomb shell firing or two at uga as the bowl season ends. If we sign two NOSE JUCO big boys, plus Gaithers and Bean Anderson are as good as advertised at Nose, then UGA will be 120% better up the middle. If this happens, then our new linebackers are immediately going to be factors with their strength and speed in Jarvis ( kid from Columbus,Ga and USC ) and Samuels hitting the seams. This will improve UGA greatly and football minds do know how this area is key.

I think AD McGarity has informed ALL of the UGA coaching staff that we need to be in the 9 to 10 win area for them to survive. We expect minimally at Cap one invite. Minimum, regardless of key injures too.

Let is see IF they can do it. If not, then we make changes in Dec 2011.

RambleOn84

Really? Our “ringer” at GT was lost in WW2 in a bomber. Castleberry is the only number retired at GT.

The problem that UGA has with WW2 is that it made it painfully obvious that a GT degree was needed and a UGA degree wasn’t to be able to win the war. UGA suffered because UGA wasn’t needed (as it isn’t now)

If anything, all UGA wins from 1970 to Jan Kemp ought to be vacated due to the rampant cheating that occurred at UGA during that time period. Cheating that had a much greater impact on the series than WW2 did. Keeping players in remedial studies for two to three years just to keep them eligible and then discarding them like yesterday’s garbage. UGA cheated it’s way to its ONE questionable National Title.

Someone has poisoned that young man’s mind into thinking he couldn’t play QB on a FBS level. He should find an acceptable school that will put him where he belongs – QB. I guarantee there are a dozen schools right now that would be glad to put him at QB.
