Former Georgia quarterback Zach Mettenberger is on his way back to the Southeastern Conference.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound freshman, who was dismissed by the Bulldogs after an arrest last spring, committed to LSU on Monday following a highly-productive season at Butler County Community College in Kansas. Mettenberger completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,678 yards and 32 touchdowns.

“It’s the best conference in America, and I want to compete against the best,” Mettenberger told TigerSportsDigest.com.

Butler lost to Navarro — led by former Bulldog Toby Jackson — 13-12 in the junior college national championship game in Pittsburg, Kan., on Sunday. According to several published reports, Mettenberger actually committed to the Tigers on his Nov. 20th official visit to Baton Rouge but he wanted to keep it a secret until the Grizzlies completed their season.

“I wanted to put all my energy into helping the team win,” said Mettenberger, who graduated from Oconee County High School in Watkinsville. “We didn’t have the season we had hoped for because we didn’t win it all, but my teammates were all great guys and it proved to be a really good experience for me.”

The Tigers return a pair of rising seniors at quarterback, Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. But the two combined for just six passing touchdowns this season. Mettenberger, a midseason enrollee who will join LSU for its Cotton Bowl practices, said he hopes to win the starting job for next season.

“The opportunity is there,” he said. “I’ll have a few seasons to play once I get there, but I’d like to start seeing the field right away. I am going to come in and compete for the starting job, just like I would have somewhere else.”

Georgia picks up the Tigers on its schedule in 2013, so Mettenberger will have the opportunity to face his old team his senior season in Baton Rouge.

Mettenberger, whose mother Tammy Mettenberger is a longtime administrative assistant in the UGA football office, was kicked off the Bulldogs’ team by head coach Mark Richt last April following his arrest in the South Georgia town off Remerton during spring break. A month later, Mettenberger plead guilty to counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. He was sentenced under the Georgia First Offender Act to 12 months probation, 80 hours of community service, fined $2,000 and banished from Valdosta for a year. Several alcohol-related charges were dismissed in the plea agreement.

Mettenberger had finished No. 2 behind fellow redshirt freshman Aaron Murray in the Bulldogs’ quarterback competition last spring.

I’m no expert on NCAA eligibility rules, but Mettenburger played a year at JUCO, wouldn’t that mean 2013 is his senior season?

I really am glad you NEVER hear about UGA going out and picking up the trash of another school.

Talk all you want about UGA “already having trash” (you know, the thugish activities of driving with a suspended licesne, underage drinking, not having a middle name, possesing fireworks, not reporting an accident, forgetting to pay parking tickets, and emerging from an alley on a scooter), but this kid deserved more than ANY to be kicked out of UGA.

SEXUAL BATTERY PEOPLE!!!!!! He is more than likely a registered sex offender. Or should be.

Well done LSU, well done.

5150 P.O.A.D – I won’t. I would have been sick if Richt kept him on the team. That said, I hope that the young man learned his lesson and that he grows to be a fine young man. I don’t think that Murray is going to leave Dawg fans too disappointed. I can’t speak for the rest of the team. We will have to wait and see.

If only Richt had gone with Mett instad of Murray, what an arm. Maybe the biggest mistake in Richt’s career was over-reacting to the Mett situation. Mett was the leader of the team. When Richt kicked Mett of the team, Richt lost the team.

@Mac – get serious will you? UGA has enough discipline problems without Mett. Now you want them to brush all that aside? Besides, rumor was Mett wasn’t honest with Richt and the staff about what happened. He was in good shape otherwise. He got kicked when they found out Mett held out information on them. He was going to have to sit a game anyway. UGA’s season would have gone no different, and possibly worse. Murray has quitely had a phenomenal freshman year at UGA. He stands to break Stafford’s TD record in the bowl game.

Coach Richt should have recruited him to come back to Georgia. He outplayed Murray in the G-Day game last April. It would have been good to give him another chance.

Sexual Battery is Sexual Battery is Sexual Battery.

@Sanford – good point. This should not be downplayed. Besides, Mett was not going to get kicked off the team until the coaching staff found out more details apparently he did not share with them. So not only was it Sexual Battery, he was not honest with Richt and his staff on the issue.

Real Funny – You are so right on the money…lol I lived near Atlanta for 15 years and heard more stories about UGA (and Falcon) athletes than I’ve ever seen here in Baton Rouge… and just because you didn’t get caught for sexual battery doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I know ALL of you are so innocent of taking a drunk girl home and having sex with her and just because she didn’t say “No”, you think it was fine to have sex with someone who wasn’t in the frame of mind to make any decision regarding her well-being. As for UGA athletes being arrested, if you think DUI is less serious than sexual battery, as the mother of a son who was killed in Georgia, I will tell you that you are totally ignorant. Driving while drunk is attempted murder at the least. I’ll take my chances with a sexual predator at LSU any day.
