No suspension for Tennessee freshman arrested for assault

Not sure if it’s just me or I’m missing something here but was anybody else surprised to see where a Tennessee freshman was arrested for assault this past weekend and is not going to miss any playing time?

Jacques Smith, a freshman defensive lineman who was rated the No. 1 prospect in Tennessee last year, was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly punching a man in the back of the head and hitting and kicking him while he was on the ground, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. The victim, 21-year-old Brandon Allen, was treated and released from a local hospital for a concussion and cuts that required stitches.

Smith, 18, posted a $2,000 bond and an arraignment was set for Nov. 10 in Knox County. The victim plans to hire an attorney.

None of this is Earth-shattering news. Indications are the young men ended up fighting in a bar over a girl. That has been going on forever at colleges.

But apparently Smith is in the clear with the Vols after apologizing to the team in the locker room on Monday. Head coach Derek Dooley said “barring something unforeseen,” Smith won’t miss any games.

“It was an unfortunate incident, it was an isolated incident, it was an incident where Jacques got a little emotional over a girl and our players did the right thing to defuse the situation,” Dooley said. “It’s not any more complex than that.”

You’ll recall that eight to 10 Tennessee players were involved in a bar brawl this past summer that resulted in two of them being arrested. Atlanta’s Darren Myles, a sophomore defensive back who had been arrested previously, was ultimately dismissed from the team. Calhoun’s Da’Rick Rogers, a five-star freshman wide receiver, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He eventually plead out under first-offender status. Other than Myles, neither Rogers or any of the other players involved missed any games as a result.

One would think after the incident this summer — not to mention the Vols’ sorry season this year — that Dooley would have issued some sort of moratorium on players hanging out in downtown Knoxville bars. Not quite.

Dooley said he doesn’t place limitations on where his players can go or even subject them to a curfew.

“We don’t have a curfew,” Dooley said. “We ask them to use good judgment and he didn’t use good judgment.”

This incident is apparently nothing new for Smith. The Sentinel reported that he was suspended one game during the high school playoffs last year for allegedly punching a teammate.

Oh, but UGA get’s massive media cryings for one of our coaches showing a choking motion to a game winning FG kicker.

Or the pitchforks come out when our starting RB didn’t pay his speeding ticket on time.

I swear… this could upset me so much I better just not look at football stuff the rest of the week.

Chip, I live in the Chattanooga area, if I remember right, he got kicked off his team the week before the playoffs began for sucker punching a teammate. Not to mention his HS team was #1 in the state and had home field advantage throughout-thanks in large part to him, then they lost in round 1 without him. kid needs to grow up.

You cannot hold the coaching staff responsible for the immature actions of college kids. It’s tough to babysit 100+ kids.

You can hold the coaching staff accountable for the punishment handed down on those players who choose to cause trouble. Dooley has proven to be a joke. That’s nothing new though, the charges that resulted from the bar brawl were dropped and the cop was never heard from again. This is business as usual in K-ville, this “incident” will go away as well. UT only cares about winning, nothing else. They will cover anything up and then “discipline” their kids “internally.” This will only lead to further trouble for that program, just look at what CMR created at UGA by not being tough enough early on.

“but this paper is pro Tech and has never liked UGA ”

lol ryan, I don’t think it’s like that. It’s actually all about generating a lot of people to click on articles in read them. UGA fans outnumber Tech fans. And nothing will generate lots of “hits” on an article than negative stories regarding out beloved bulldogs. The AJC is journalism, but it’s also a buisness. Stoking the fire will gain them more advertising revenue simply put. Still, it doesn’t mean I have to like it.

If you really want to do something about it, never read negative articles about the UGA program. But that’s easier said than done…

Bradley and Schultz are simply bullies……

When it comes to local sports, it should be written only by local sports writers. Bradley is from Kentucky, and not sure about Schultz…. but both know the weapon the have in their hands…….

The UGA fanbase is BY FAR the biggest in the State outside of the Braves. In the new instant-information-internet-on-the-go era, they rely MUCH MUCH more on blog hits and comments to justify their worth. So they know by doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to upset the UGA fanbase, they will get hits and comments. Unfortunately, myself included, we bite their bait and talk back to them.

If UGA fans would all agree to boycott the articles written by them, they will quickly be fired and forced to move on. But it will never happen, because we (UGA fans/students/alumni) are frustrated, and feel the need to lash back.

AJC….. FIRE Bradley and Schultz and hire some sports writers who actually have pride for the State of Georgia and what they write about. You are on the verge of losing a LOT of readers, whom you heavily rely on.

True Dawg… I get it, stinks being 2nd! I can’t even get in the top 10, b/c work gets in the way! I agree, AJC would be all over CMR and you can’t babysit 100+ teenage/young adults. I hope DD gets a hold of the program and doesn’t have the media screaming. But, then again, the Knoxville/state of Tenn papers don’t throw their football team or teams under the bus like the AJC seems to have fun doing. Yes, some of what UGA has done is deserved, but the CTG choke sign, NOTHING! I would bet the players on defense loved it. It’s a NON-ISSUE! Let UT handle their own problems and it’s not the AJC or Dawg fans issue. Pull for the Dawgs and let’s win out!

The article is about a TN player, yet 2/3rd’s of all the comments are about Georgia!! Does anybody have anything to say about the fact that Dooley might want to change up some of his policies with the kids?? Clearly what he is doing is not working. Keep doing what you have always done and you’ll keep getting what you have always got. Bet TN fans wish Fulmer was back.

Our little violations don’t hold a candle to UT’s. This is 2 barroom fights and an armed robbery within the last year or so by the Vols football players

UPDATE TO THE STORY:

Brandon Allen, the alledged 21 year old victim, was seen giving a “CHOKE” sign to UT football players in response to their 4th quarter play against South Carolina. Jacques Smith then alledgedly struck Mr. Allen in the back of the head.

IN an interview, Allen stated, ” I was just trying to motivate the defense – afterall, the Georgia coach gave a Florida kicker a choke sign – and the Florida kicker won the game – by giving a choke sign to our defense – I figured we would win our next game!”

This Just IN:
Mike Bobo was seen scratching his personal space on the sideline while looking at his down and distance play sheet. Florida players stated they were not offended. Video tape of the sideline clearly shows Bobo’s actions – he could not be reached for comment.

Also In:
Coach Rodny Garner was seen “tweaking” his nose before Florida’s 3rd & 19 play that ultimately lead to a 1st and goal – then a touchdown for the Gators. Nose “teaking” in certain cultures could potentially be a sign of disrespect. No comment from Coach Garner has been requested.

YeP- get all the details right here folks.

Derek is imposing the Bobby Bowden system of rules enforcement…..just have different sets of rules.

Make exceptions for crucial players, while disciplining scrubs.

Referring to notorious bad boy, Sebastian Janakowski, Bobby once said, “I have one set of rules for our international players and another set of rules for our American players.”

Funny stuff….unless someone gets assaulted.
