South Atlanta PF Nick Jacobs picks Bama over UGA, Clemson, Florida

FROM AJC REPORTER MICHAEL CARVELL:

One of Georgia’s top uncommitted basketball prospects said on Tuesday that he will sign with Alabama over Georgia, among others.

South Atlanta High’s Nick Jacobs announced his college decision, with Alabama edging out Clemson. Georgia and Florida were the other finalists. It was tough news again for Georgia, which lost Milton High power forward Julian Royal in a head-to-head battle with Georgia Tech last week. Both Jacobs and Royal are ranked among the nation’s top 100 college basketball prospects.

“I liked all the schools, but picked Alabama because it was the best fit for me,” Jacobs said. “I had built a close relationship with Alabama’s coaches and players. I like Alabama because it’s a winning program and I know we have the talent to win an SEC championship.”

The 6-foot-8, 255-pounder admitted that he was leaning to Clemson before taking his four official visits. After the whirlwind tour of recruiting trips, his mind changed several times before settling on Alabama.

Regarding Georgia, Jacobs said he “loved the coaches and players” but wanted to play a little further from home.

Jacobs averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds last year at South Atlanta.

“[Alabama] is going to get a good kid who is very strong and knows how to use his body in the post area,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “He has a great work ethic and wants to be the best he can be.”

Welcome, Nick. After February, you’ll have plenty of other Georgia kids to help with the driving.

UGA is getting better but so is the Tide. They are getting bigger and faster. Don’t underestimate Alabama in the future.

You may have the talent to win the SEC except for the fact that Kentucky has the best players in the nation to come play there, not just out of Georgia. Fun fact. Good luck with that SEC hoops thing though.

UGA was backing away from him? They didn’t want a 4 star top 100 power forward? If they backed away then it was because they knew he was leaning in other directions.

Anthony Grant is a good coach and is doing for Bama what Fox is doing for UGA. The rise of both programs is good for the SEC as a whole. Good luck to the young man. Go Dawgs!

I currently live in Georgia, however I worked and lived in Tuscaloosa for a long time. Tuscaloosa and the University of Alabama will never embrace basketball as a Sport of choise or will they support it. Alabama bleeds crimson tide football and thats the way it is and will always be. Whenever making a decision of sorts one should make their decision based on their future plans. At any rate good luck in Alabama Nick.
