Mailbag: Bama invades Georgia, Facebook omens and Tuitt’s trips

THE MAILBAG

mailbag(1)We’ve been a couple of weeks without a Mailbag, so I decided to reach in and grab a few questions and see what we had. There were some old questions in there and a lot of repeats. So we need to get current. Be sure to drop a line to AJCrecruiting@yahoo.com and we’ll see if we can keep this feature rolling for a few weeks in a row.

Now on to your mail. . . .

Don4654 asks: Do you think Bama will get any Georgia players to commit besides (Cook linebacker) Shannon Brown?

Chip: Yes, I suspect Bama will get a couple or few more Georgians, including the two Xzaviers, DE Xzavier Dickson of Griffin and OT Xzavier Ward of Colquitt County. The Crimson Tide is also battling for RB Isaiah Crowell, RB Quan Bray, CB Damian Swann and DT Gabe Wright, among others.

Rhall55 asks: Is not Kris Frost from the same high school that UGA recruit Christian LeMay attended? If so, why was he not heavily recruited by UGA? This seems to be a trend of UGA to back off on potential recruits, i.e. A.J. Johnson of Gainesville and Shannon Brown of Cook County?

Chip: Kris Frost does indeed play for Butler High in Matthews, N.C. He’s a standout at both linebacker and tight end/receiver and has earned a four-star rating as an “athlete.” And Georgia certainly is aware of him. But for whatever reason the Bulldogs have chosen not to offer. Their problem, presumably, is Frost is somewhat of “tweener” in college. Not really big enough to play tight end or linebacker and maybe not quick enough to play in the secondary. Nevertheless, Auburn, Cal, FSU, Michigan, North Carolina and Southern Cal are all supposed to get visits. So there are plenty of takers out there.

As for the Bulldogs’ selectivity, it’s hard to ever know exactly what they’re thinking. Sometimes academics and other such things are deterrents, sometimes it’s bigger needs or lack thereof and sometimes their evaluations are just different from scouts and analysts. The reality is that the pool is so deep between in-state talent and regional reach, UGA can afford to be very selective.

Bradley asks: Chip, I was on Facebook the other day and I noticed that a high school friend of mine, who plays for Florida, has recently become Facebook friends with WR Sammy Watkins. Is this a sign that he’ll be a Gator or just a coincidence?

Chip: It’s a sign you need to find some new friends. Kidding. . . . No, the last I saw on Watkins, a five-star receiver from Fort Myers, Fla., somebody had Miami and Clemson leading for his services. It would be a mega-coup for Clemson to also land Watkins, having already secured the commitment of five-star WR Charone Peake of Spartanburg. Actually, there has been very little information out on Watkins since the season began. But you certainly can’t count out the Gators on a prospect like that.

GTbaby asks: Who do you think is next to commit to Georgia Tech? Are Blake Countess and Stephon Tuitt still GT leans?

Chip: Tuitt, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end, claims that his top five right now — Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and Notre Dame — are all even. But the Yellow Jackets are generally believed to have a considerable lead and I tend reside in that camp. But he definitely plans to take his visits and anything can happen when teams get you on campus. He’s in South Bend, Ind., this weekend taking in Michigan at Notre Dame so we’ll check in with him after that and see again how he feels.

As for Countess, it’s hard to tell what this 5-10, 175-pound athlete from Maryland is going to do. He plans to take all his official visits but not until after the season is over. So he’s going to be a late decision.

Chip, I agree that Bama may get the Xzavier guys but no way the crimson tide gets Crowell only if
Georgia has a bad year and Richt gets canned. RTR

You don’t always get what you want.

Remember those words. UGA will not get everyone. I think they may get Swann and Crowell and that is it.

UGA is selective and it’s my understanding that unlike other SEC schools, if UGA offers and player and he accepts the offer, it will be honored. Chip, when it comes to the rankings of high school signing classes, is there really much difference between a top 5 class and a top 15 class?

I think if we lose some great defensive players from Ga. to Bama this year, it will be because our new DC has only been here less than a year and prospects are watching to see how his defense works out. If we don’t get them this year and our DC does well, I think we will get some in the future.

Auburn’s roster reads like a city map of Atlanta. Yes we’ve owned Columbus for years but look at our current starters and you’ll see East Point, College Park, Jonesboro, Atlanta, Tucker, Marietta and that list is just the few I can remember. So Bama is just following a road Auburn has been for years. Makes you wonder what UGA, GT and others are thinking. There are a lot of great players here and the locals are making some strange choices by not signing them.

To Rome Dog…UGA screwed a a kid this year by rescinding an offer at the last minute. He had even already enrolled and spent a considerable amount of time at UGA. So don’t think kids that put their trust in UGAs word never get the screw. I wish it never happened to anyone and no school would ever do it but to think UGA wouldn’t or hasn’t is naive.

Yes – ALL schools have backed off of players after they have filled their needs or they find something new about the guy. Even Auburn has done this in the past. By the way – what happenend to Auburn’s vaunted offense and much hyped QB thursday night? they were lucky to beat Miss State. The defense looks better against the run but is suspect against the pass – especially the deep ball.

“Chip, when it comes to the rankings of high school signing classes, is there really much difference between a top 5 class and a top 15 class?”

look at the top 5 recruiting classes over the last 10 years and compare it to the top ten college programs. yes, there is a difference, the schools with the higher ranksing have more Ws than Ls.

RTRTR – I would say that coaching makes the biggest difference. Look at Alabama. Coach Saban didn’t inherit the highest ranked players, but he coached them up. I can’t imagine what he will do with all the high ranked players y’all are getting now.

The state of Georgia had close to 200 players sign D-1 last year, if not mistaken. No way the Dogs can get every good player. Fortunately, Richt gets a very high percentage of instate players he targets.

I believe Xazier Ward’s ship has sailed at Bama, Chip. UGA told him that they only had one more spot open at OT and he should jump on it if he was interested in playing at UGA and he chose not to…Zach Debell out of FL jumped all over it. Ward then tried to go to Bama the following weekend with his whole family b/c he was looking at commiting to them and they told him they were full as well. He got some bad advice from his coaches at Colquitt who were telling him that he was an elite-enough prospect that he could wait until after the season and still have his pick of schools and that wasn’t the case.

Bama is also full at DT right now (#1 JUCO Player in the Nation Jesse Williams being the latest commitment), so it looks like Wright is down to AU and UGA with AU in the lead right now.

Crowell (thanks to Jarvis Jones), Swann (thanks to Coach Grantham), Drew (thanks to Christian Lemay and Christian Conley) and Dickson (thanks to Corey Moore and Chris Mayes) will all be Dawgs. Bray is a toss-up…Bama did a great job getting in on him early. He wants to play RB in college but UGA has offered him as a WR. We are looking at taking one more WR in this class so whoever jumps on the scholarship between Montgomery and Bray will get it.

Magic Man

Bama does lead for Dickson and Ward. Although, their lead on Dickson has dwindled to it being neck and neck with UGA. Bama will also battle UGA for Bray, Crowell, and Swann. They are in second for Crowell and Swann at the moment. They are in a tie with UGA and Auburn for Bray. They will most likely land Ward, UGA hasn’t recruited him like they were before the Zach DeBell committment since he committed.

I suspect Auburn Man is talking about Devin Burns, a QB out of Carver high school back in July of 2009. He was offered by UGA and when he accepted at a later date he was told the offer had been taken back.

Of course what Auburn Man didn’t say is that UGA went to great lengths to smooth the situation over including a visit to Carver high by both Richt and Bobo. It was considered a mis-communication and UGA admitted the mistake and handled the situation in a classy straight up manner.

Typical Alabama guy to run his mouth over a single incident and not report all the facts.

Then again he/she may be a bug fan?

Lowndes25

September 10th, 2010

Magic Man, I think the only other OT’s that Bama are even considering taking in this class is Cyrus Kouandjo out of Maryland or Antonio Richardson out of TN. Ward is a good prospect, but he does not possess near the talent that Cyrus or Antonio does.

Lowndes25

September 10th, 2010
8:35 am

Vick, you might be right, but based on Auburn Man’s post he said that the kid had already enrolled and been on campus for a “considerable amount of time”…that does not describe Devin Burns at all…that was the kid from LSU…

Lowndes25

Can’t reveal my sources, Magic Man, but they are extremely reliable…extremely…Bama has not been hard after Ward for quite some time. Now, that is subject to change at any given time, but as of now it looks like they are putting all of their focus on Cyrus (just like UGA has put all of it’s focus on Brandon Shell out of SC as the only other OT we will take in this class).

JB

9:00 am

Bottom line on recruiting……If Bama has 4 OL coming back and 4 or 5 more in the program and 3-4 commits, they will back off OL, I don’t care how good they are. Fans don’t understand that, coach’s do.

So, when you read a laundry list of studs at one particular position picking Bama first, it doesn’t mean a thing.

Lowdnes25, you are pretty much right on with your posts…agree that Auburn Man trying to stir up something with half truths or just bad info…I’m still a little concerned about the WR position…i think we still need to get a another top notch reciever in this class, but next year does look good for that position in the state from what i have seen and heard….Any word on the RB from NJ that, i believe his name is Huggins…He is extremely fast and one of the top rated backs in the country and had UGA pretty high on the list…Of course i know we are after Crowell real hard..thanks..

Hoping Tuitt continues to lean toward GT. As Chip said, lots of things can change once a kid gets on campus soI hope GT stays on him throughout all of these visits. The Tech defense and recruiting could use the talent of this young man… Chip, any more word on Romar Morris and whether he intends to stay with UNC after all their mess up there?

9:18 am

@Lowndes25,

I suspect your sources are reliable, cause I agree with everything that you are saying. I just didn’t know that Bama and/or UGA had told Ward that they only had one spot left at OT. I knew UGA backed off on recruiting him as hard after the DeBell commitment and that they were still recruiting Shell. But, Shell is more of a luxury than a must-have. I thought Ward would be a shoo-in to Bama since we backed off, but it looks like they have the same concerns about his talent as UGA does.

Lowndes25

September 10th, 2010
9:23 am

rduck, you don’t have to worry about UGA with Tuitt…we are not recruiting him right now. He, and his mom, made it abundantly clear where UGA stood as compared to GT in their minds and we decided to move on. CPJ did a good job getting on Mrs. Tuitt early and convincing her that an education at Tech is significantly better than UGA. The one person you have to worry about in Tuitt’s recruitment is Tuitt himself…I don’t think he is as high on Tech as his mom is right now and really wants to check out Miami and Notre Dame…you better hope your coaches stay hard on him and his mom.

Huggins is somewhat of an enigma right now. We are not really recruiting him that hard (it is pretty much Crowell or bust for us this year)…I think he was highly impressed with his visit to UF, but they are focused more on Blakely and Bellamy since they lost out on the Wilder Jr sweepstakes. I personally think Huggins stays up north to play his college ball…Wisconsin or Rutgers imo.

Next year’s class looks good at WR. C.J. Curry, Charlie Hegedus, Artimas Samuel and Shaw Roland to name a few…great looking WR class that we are already getting a head-start on in our recruitment of these guys (we lead for all 4 of these guys right now)….

Lowndes25

Magic Man, Ward is a raw talent right now…could be great in a few years or he might be a bust. He has only been playing football for a few years so he still has a lot to learn. UGA really wanted him at one point, but like I said, he decided that he would heed his high school coaches advice and try to hold out and we moved on (thanks to the Debell commitment)…at the same time, Bama was filling up on the O-Line as well and they let Ward know that when he wanted to visit with his family. Brandon Shell would be a great luxury to have…he is supposed to be at the UGA/SC game this weekend as an official visitor for USC, so if we can perform well on the field it might go a long way in cementing UGA as his destination. The reason Shell is a luxury is b/c we are the #1 team for 2012 recruit John Theus out of Bolles…his brother is commited to us right now, and they want to play together in college. John will probably be the #1 or #2 OT in the entire 2012 class…he is that good. I personally think Bama pulls in Cyrus and that will fill out your OT class…you guys might still take Spencer Region at OG since he is an exceptional recruit, but I don’t know that for sure. Crowell will end up going to UGA in my opinion…see the hug between Richt and Crowell during his game last week as a little bit of evidence as to where his heart really lies (plus, he is really close to Jarvis Jones).

“‘Bama invades Georgia.” Who doesn’t?

Kids will be watching UGA D hard over the next month

September 10th, 2010
9:52 am

Great defensive side high school kids will be viewing UGA’s new system with hard scrutiny over the next few UGA games. The SC game and the Arkansas game ought ot really tell us all where UGA is in this. If we do well ……then we ought og et some solid D side comitments.

Last year these two teams rolled up nearly 90 points and billions of yards vs UGA and CWM. If UGA can effectively reduce that to half ……….then the D plan is working. The new D coaches are getting it done with players recruited by CWM and the future ought to look fabulous.

We will soon know what we have. The Mississippi State game with Mullins as their coach ought to also provide some clear data. He is known to be a good offense coach. These next four games are UGA’s future, folks.

Time will tell. Personally, I think that more than whether UGA has a great D scheme now under TG is at stake. It has to do with overall perceptions …………….do the alumni feel that UGA football is moving forward? Do the alumni feel that we really cannot stop these super star kids from selling their cleats or their jerseys? Are we getting the right kids in school to represent us??

This year is pivotal for the UGA program …………..I am a UGA man, classof 71 & 73. MY wife is, most of my family and friends. This year is very, very important to guage the future at UGA in football.

Go Dogs.
