(UPDATED THROUGHOUT. VIDEO BELOW)

For Tremayne McNair, strong academics and playing time were factors in his decision to commit to Georgia Tech on Sunday. But neither was the main reason he chose the Yellow Jackets.

“I just love the city of Atlanta,” said the 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker from Jacksonville, N.C., said Monday. “I just like the way it’s located right in the middle of a big city. I didn’t think I’d like that at first but, after going down there and seeing it in person, that’s one of the things I like most about it.”

There’s not many places like Atlanta where McNair comes from. The closest major city to Jacksonville, where McNair stars for White Oak High School, is Wilmington, N.C.

Those factors — and others — contributed to McNair’s decision to choose the Jackets over Clemson and North Carolina. He committed to Tech Sunday night after a lenghty discussion with his family.

He cited a strong relationship with recruiting coordinator Andy McCollum — or Coach Mac, as he calls him — who was recruiting him for N.C. State before moving to Tech earlier this year. He also said he said he plans for a career in sports management and likes Tech’s management program. Then there’s the Jackets’ new 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Al Groh. He said they want him to play outside linebacker and use his speed to supply a pass rush off the end.

Then there’s McNair’s connection to two other North Carolinians, quarterback Vad Lee of Durham and defensive back Dominique Noble of Mount Ulla.

“We’ve all been talking to each other a little bit,” McNair said. “I met Vad at a photo shoot for Tom Lemming one time and I met Dominique at the Shrine Game combine and playing basketball. So we’ve been texting each other about everything.”

McNair’s commitment comes on the heels of two others this past week: Outside linebacker Darius Caldwell of Atlanta and quarterback Vad Lee of Durham, N.C.

Suddenly the Jackets are filling up fast at linebacker. McNair is the fourth, joining Caldwell, Chaz Cheeks and Jabari Hunt-Days. Their top remaining target is four-star DE/OLB prospect Stephon Tuitt of Monroe Area.

Former Tech star Dwyer struggling with Steelers
ShareThisPrint E-mail By Larry Hartstein

Eight months after his late touchdown run gave Georgia Tech the ACC championship, Jonathan Dwyer is in danger of not making the Pittsburgh Steelers roster.

not good for tech as other top running backs will see this and avoid PJ offense.

Is it me or does the stuff ATL XMAN says so asinine it doesn’t need a response. JD is 20 lbs overweight when he reported to fall camp that’s his problem idiot not the offense he ran in college. ATL XMAN

20 lbs over weight because PJ had him add 20lbs to play bowling ball in his offense. when JD played for chan he was like 215- 220 mamybe. johnson had him add weight so he could withstand the beating a running back takes in johnson offense.

im willing to bet you never played football much less know how to throw one.

XMAN – I do believe that in Dwyer’s last year, CPJ was all over him about his weight. I wondered if he would be one of those athletes where that would always be a constant struggle. I have faith in JD in long run, he is definitely a baller. He will get it together, but got to heal real quick

ATL XMAN

August 23rd, 2010

jd was 197 his first year at tech. most guys want to put on 15 to 20 pounds the first year. PJ had JD playing around 235 or 240.

he weighed in at 229 ,which is not that bad, at camp.

pj offense didnt do him any favors thats for sure. he took big hit after big hit with or without the ball most plays . the shelf life of a running back in the nfl is not that long.

GT Sambo

Others already made this comment, but Tuitt is most likely being recruited as a DE, given his size. As far as Romar Morris is concerned, I hope TechGrad is right and that Vad Lee has a good relationship with Romar Morris. I would love to see him as an A-back at GT, because from what I’ve read the main reason he picked UNC (besides location) was because they promised him he’d get to play RB after initially working him out as receiver. He is slightly undersized to play RB in a pro style offense, so there is a chance that UNC would end up only using him as a 3rd down back.

Wait, so which is it? One day the haters say that Techis only good under Paul Johnson because of the “stars” that Gailey brought in like Dwyer…

Hey Romar Morris, you can play in a pro style offense with UNC (assuming they even give you a look as the primary RB), take a pounding carrying the ball 250 times a year and average 4.5 yds per carry.
OR
You can come to GT get the ball in space, utilize your best weapon, your speed, carry the ball 100-125 times a year and average 8 yeards a carry. Plus, you’ll get a lot more opportunities to catch the ball downfield than in a pro style offense.

here is my proof…where is yours?

NFL scouts want to know if straight-line runner Jonathan Dwyer has some wiggle and pass catching ability. (Johnny Crawford, jcrawford@ajc.com)

Indianapolis — Georgia Tech running back Jonathan Dwyer has already started interviewing with teams and is set to meet with the New England Patriots later on Saturday.

Dwyer weighed-in at 229 pounds and measured 5-foot-11 1/2.

He has interviewed with St. Louis, San Diego and Denver.

Here’s took some questions at the NFL scouting combine:

Q: I’ve been hearing about your workouts and that you’ve dropped a lot of weight?

A: Coach wanted me to gain some weight when the option offense came in. I realized after the season that my comfortable weight was between 225 and 230. I worked hard and lost some weight. I got down to 225 before I got here and everything. . . I weighed in at a good weight that I wanted to weigh in at.

Q: What was that?

A: 229.

Q: How has the process been for you so far?

A: Actually it’s gone pretty good. A lot of teams have showed some interests. I’m just taking it all in stride and having

some fun with it. I’m enjoying the moment and having some fun.

Q: How are you dealing with the questions about making the transition from Georgia Tech’s offense to a pro styled offense?

A: That’s just a question that is going to continuously be asked. But if they go back to the 2007 season when I was a true freshmen and played behind Tashard Choice. . . It’s nothing new for me to be able to play seven yards deep. I’m just going out there to show them that I’m an athlete and I have the ability to adjust to any kind of offense they throw at

Ok, this doesn’t even make sense to your argument ATL XMAN. JD played under Chan at 210. CPJ came in and said, “we think you’ll make a great B-Back, but ideally you’ll be playing at 225.” JD gains weight up to nearly 240 lbs. How is that CPJ’s fault?!?!? Could also be the reason why he fell from a potential 2nd rounder to a 6th rounder, which obviously had NOTHING to do with CPJ or his offense.

Atlxman dont you have something better to do than post 10 times on the Tech blogs…geez man you look foolish. Dwyer did this to himself…its sad honestly. Talk to anyone in that locker room and they will tell you that he had issues last year with weight and with work ethic. No matter what happens you will always see the Tech glass half empty instead of half full….as for players being successful just for attending UGA….what about all the 4 and 5 star busts that UGA has had. Just attending UGA is not going to get you to the NFL….you have to be the kind of player to make it there….it takes way more than just talent.

the weight is not really the issue, its the fact that dwyer was not prepared for the nfl. its that simple. he was asked to gain weight for PJ offense. pj fault their as he was the one who asked him to gained weight. the pros wanted him to lose it because they need faster lighter backs to run the pro style offense. pj runs high school or div1aa offense where they need bigger heavier backs to take a beating. i guess it can be JD fault fault, after all he could of transferred. which brings me to my point in recruitng half way decent running backs. they will avoid this offense like crazy. just ask JD what he thinks.

Gerald

August 23rd, 2010

ATL XMAN:

Lots of 4 and 5 star RB recruits went to UGA under Richt and were never heard from again. But it is curious that you are keying on Dwyer, who had weight problems and by his own admission was a selfish player more concerned with breaking big runs to market himself for the Heisman and NFL draft than following his offense, than you are with Demaryius Thomas, who was a 1st round pick (when was the last time UGA had a 1st round pick at WR? that’s right, THEY NEVER HAVE!) and is doing great for the Broncos.

ATL X-MAN, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma sent tons of RBs to the NFL back when they were running the triple-option. And Paul Johnson’s best RB at I-AA Georgia Southern, Adrian Peterson, had an 8 year NFL career. So if Johnson’s system was able to put I-AA RBs into the NFL, it will do the same for I-A players. And Johnson will recruit guys who buy into his system instead of guys who are just looking for playing time and a shot at the NFL like Dwyer. He told Dontae Aycock to buzz off, which was a good decision since the guy has already been kicked off Auburn’s team for rules violations and will drift into obscurity at South Florida (where at GT he would have been a star as Nesbitt’s backup), and Jordan Luallen has hit the road also because GT had too many athletes at both WR and QB in front of him.

But the amazing thing is that when A.J. Green finally gets finished wasting his college career in Athens after this fall, Richt will have produced the same number of #1 draft picks at WR in 11 years as CPJ will have in 2, and let’s not forget that Demaryius Thomas was “only a 3 star recruit”.

Incidentally, Scout.com has all 12 Georgia Tech recruits as 3 star guys. You folks who are claiming that GT’s recruiting will fall apart under CPJ are totally off the mark. While Gailey DID sign more 4 star guys than did CPJ, he also signed A LOT MORE 2 star guys. It was feast or famine with Gailey because he was trying to recruit as if he was at an SEC school, and had to scramble to fill scholarships with mid-major talent like Reggie Ball when his big time prospects went elsewhere. It is better to sign 20 guys rated at the 3 star level than it is to sign a couple 4 star guys and a bunch of 2 star recruits, which is really all that Gailey did. Especially when you consider that the vast majority of the 4 star recruits that Gailey signed never panned out.

Hmmmmmmm!

uh ALT XMan Vlad Lee is espn top 150 4 star ath, which is an OFFENSIVE POSITION not defense, therefore our best recruit is offensive, not defensive player, as for our recruiting, things should be fine you said the only tech player that would be taken in the first round but you were DEAD WRONG as our recruiting so far we have 12 and the season hasn’t begun yet. And my point is you were wrong about our recruiting as you said we would not get any 4 star recruits and we have 2.

GT Sambo

August 23rd, 2010

I’ll add to what Gerald said. Chan Gailey had one good recruiting class, 2007. The rest of Gailey’s tenure was marked by recruiting classes that were ranked in the 30th to 40th nationally. CPJ recruits for his system on offense, so we aren’t going to get a lot of “nationally ranked” recruits at QB, A-back, or OL, simply because we are targeting a different kind of athlete at those positions than the nationally ranked recruit. And that is perfect for GT, because I maintain that we typically wouldn’t have gotten those “nationally ranked” recruits even if we were running a pro style offense (due to our academic standards and status as a research focused technical institute).

pigmons

corrections: as for our recruiting we have 12 verbals

I meant to say to ALT XMAN that he was wrong about saying only Derrick Morgan would be taken in the first round as Bay, Bay was taken in the first round which you predicted wouldn’t happen.

ALTXMAN also was incorrect in predicting that Tech would be entirely unable to recruit any four star players this now confirmed untrue

ALTXMAN recently said that tech’s highest rated recruit was a Defensive player, this is also incorrect as Vlad Lee is an ATH which is usually an offensive player, not defensive

Vlad Lee is ESPN TOP 150, ALT XMAN is wrong again as he said Tech cannot get top talent

all you guys are smoking some serious drugs. if your recruiting class is so good then why are you guys like 55 and why does your team look like a div1aa team out there? you guys need to wake up and really take a hard look at your football team. just go down the roster and see who you really have. you mostly have a bunch of guys who would have trouble breaking through the starting roster on ga southern teams. very little and very weak. pj recruits havent done jack. name one recruit that has. not one.

adrian peterson sat on the bench in the pros because of PJ offense. he was going pro anyways just because he, like JD was a very good running back. but he had no clue about what to do in a pro style offense and just sat on the bench thanks PJ. richts had first round running backs and qb in the NFL 2 started on sun last year. moreno got hurt but he is coming back. stafford started his first year when he was supposed to be a senior. matt ryan and flacco both played at least 4 years of college ball. uga has so many players in the nfl that are doing great its not even funny. and this year they will have a receiver go in the first round.

the only reason bey bey went first round was because of the crazy young coach in den who chose tebow in the first round too. paid big time money for a clip board holder. moreno won the starting job because he was prepared bye richt and company and is a hard worker. same for moreno and the 3 round receiver muhammed that plays for cle also started as a rookie. your boy bey bey might be playing special teams

as i have said before my dad is a tech fan so i have to listen to him whine and moan why doesnt tech get the big time running back or qb? blah blah .

so i point out to him why and i do the same for you guys. and like you guys, he just doesnt get it yet. but after this year he will. no more gaily players to run his system. which im pretty sure that gailys players, that went pro i might add, will not be out done by PJ div1aa players.

truth hurts with you guys huh? i mean you guys get all defensive when i simply just state the facts. and the fact is that PJ is ruining my dads favorite football team. he lived off gailys recruits these past 2 years so lets see what he does with his. and when he falls on his face i will be looking for you guys negative post about PJ and how bad a coach tech really has and that the Xman was right after all. Pj should be coaching ga southern at best, or NAVY because they play weaker teams as well. but im glad Pj is at tech, just means more W’s for UGA

ATL XMAN,
Why would a GT fan (that actually understands football) complain about not being able to recruit a “big time” QB? Virtually every QB Paul Johnson recruits is being recruited to play elsewhere by other schools. So obviously, they aren’t going to be a “big time” recruit. Chan Gailey never beat Tech with all his “AWESOME” recruits, while Paul Johnson is 1-1. We aren’t ever going to compete with UF, UGA, Texas, and USC for “nationally ranked” recruits, no matter who is coach.

Yep, Rivals has Noble as a Jacket. Another solid recruit for Tech, and upping our total to 13 on the year. This is shaping up to be a good class.

I am sure atl 0man will soon inform us that Noble is also unworthy of playing on the same field as UGA players.
This defense is definitely looking up. Now if Groh can just land Tuitt.
Atl 0man,
If you would just stick to one argument and said that Dwyer going late in the draft hurt GT a little on recruiting RBs, then maybe you would be right. NOTHING has suggested that a RB out of CPJs system could not flourish in the NFL. You were one of the idiots on here at one time saying to name a player out of NAVY he has sent to the NFL just proving how moronic you can be. Dwyer hurt himself by not staying in shape both before the combines and fall camp. He was listed as a threat for the #2 spot during spring drills

Congrats to Domonique Nobel and Tremayne McNair. Also Vad Lee I look forward to seeing them play next year in the flats! Nice to see NC talent in the ATL. Vad Lee had a combine 317 yards and 5 TD’s. Future looks bright for GT!!!!

ATL XMAN, if CPJ wanted Dwyer to play at 235 or 240 like you say, wouldn’t he be mad not pleased that Anthony Allen is now playing at 225. AA played at 235 last year, but he mentioned that he dropped some weight and put on some muscle to prepare for the move to B-Back this year. If PJ wanted B-Backs to be heavier he would have had Allen stay where he was or put on some weight considering that he has a bigger frame than Dwyer. Why would PJ ask Dwyer to put on weight or do anything different after his 2008 year when he played at the perfect weight.

The truth is that Dwyer was just putting on fluff which just slowed him down his senior year and at the combine. That is the only reason why his draft stock fell and why he’s sucking it up at the moment. If it was really PJ’s offense like you claim, how do you explain a guy like Adrian Peterson making it to the NFL from a D-II program like southern.
