WSB-TV broadcasting high school games live every Friday

Here’s a good one: WSB wants me to help Zach Klein call high school football games this fall.

That’s right. Me. Calling games. Live. On TV.

Should be hilarious.

In all seriousness, it really is cool what WSB is doing. They are taking local high school sports coverage to a new level. Think ESPN’s College Game Day on a smaller local scale. You know, fans, bands, cheerleaders, reveling before kickoff. And great football.

For 15 weeks Zach and I and the talented staffs of WSB-TV and PlayON! Sports (the group that is actually producing the games) will be traveling around Metro Atlanta to bring you the best high school football contests live and on tape delay. The broadcasts can be seen live on Retro Television (RTV — Comcast Ch. 248, Charter 127) at 7:30 every Friday night. Then the games will be replayed in their entirety on WSB-TV Channel 2 at 1 a.m.

And they’ve got a great lineup planned for you. We come flying out of the gate on Aug. 27 — that’s two weeks from this Friday — with a match up of Stone Mountain powers in Stephenson at Parkview. There should be dozens of college prospects on the field for that one.

Then the next five weeks will bring you Roswell at Peachtree Ridge, McEachern at Marietta, Gainesville at North Hall, Buford at Lovett and Walton and Lassiter. We’ll keep it up all the way into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, if you’ve never checked out RTV (think black and white classics like The Rifleman and Leave it to Beaver) track it down in your channel guide so you’ll know where to find us. Then you can watch the polished and professional TV personality Klein do his thing while I make a fool of myself live and in living color. Or just set your DVR for the replay at 1 a.m. Maybe by then they’ll have a chance to edit out my goofs.

Move over Sumerall and Madden. I'm the good looking one on the right. Still not sure why they had Zach Klein stand up on a box.

That is so cool. I worked at WSB Radio in the 60’s when we did High School Game of the Week every Friday night all the way through the state championship – Valdosta vs. Lakeview, if I recall. The semi-final we covered was at War Memorial in Columbus in the middle of a tropical storm. By halftime you couldn’t read any player numbers in the mud and at one point couldn’t even see the opposite sideline. Neither team would risk a handoff, much less throw a pass. Final score was 6-0. The next week at Booby Dodd the weather was just enough better to permit a more meaningful game.

I know these kids will be thrilled to be on television and wish everyone associated with the deal the best for a great season.

As usual only Atlanta area teams. We get no respect in the south, even though we’re the most talented teams in the state.

Guys, be careful. Atlanta folks don’t like it when they’re reminded that Georgia exists beyond Atlanta. They don’t mind using our football talent, but they don’t like acknowledging where it came from.

Have fun Chip. That should be a fun job during the season. RTV is not on Direct I have never been able to fint it. If you still have an old TV and had to get one of the converter boxes RTV is the second Channel 2.2, or old raddit ears and you can get it.

Tom Dawg how much money do you think it takes to travel a crew to produce these games? WSB is metro and it would cost too much to go show a far away team.

Geez people lighten up on Chip and the broadcast. I think that this is a great idea and a long time coming. The schedule looks good, just wish that I got that channel, but I will go for the replays for now. Once again, great idea and good luck.

Need to check out the North Forsyth vs West Forsyth game on 10/15. This is developing into a huge rivalry. Games have been very competetive (cept last year) and the crowds are huge.

why everytime a LOCAL ATLANTA station decides to broadcast high school football games of LOCAL ATLANTA schools, that south Georgia folks get upset that they’re not being broadcast? Why don’t you voice those complaints to the Savannah or Macon stations?

Awesome more HS football is a good thing….CSS production is just so bad…the feed, the camares from the 40’s not sure what the deal is but it is too grainy

Well said “somebody tell me”. This is absolutely wonderful that these high school games are being broadcast. This is first time a local Atlanta station has broadcast this many games and I’m sure if a local station in south Georgia decided for the first time to broadcast this many games that metro Atlanta area teams would not be a big part of the initial lineup of games.

I just learned about this great company… PlayOn Sports that essentially enables individual high schools to become their own broadcasting stations. So yes… it appears that Internet and Television broadcasts of high school football games are coming to a town near you soon. These guys even allow the high school to sell advertising to go along with the broadcasts and keep most of the revenue. Great deal for the high schools, great deal for interested viewers, and a great deal for advertisers trying to reach specific audiences. I am going to encourage my local high school to sign up.

As big as HS football is in South GA, you would think that a light bulb would have gone off in the heads of the management of WMAZ, WALB, WTOC, WJBF, and WTVM to use their digital subfeeds to broadcast HS games in their respective areas just like WSB is doing with their digital subfeed here in the Atlanta Metro.
