Georgia’s stock up with Jay Rome, down with Gabe Wright

Georgia’s stock is up with one of the state’s top recruits and down with another.

Valdosta’s Jay Rome (6-6, 240), the No. 1 tight end in the country according to Scout.com, said he loved his visit to Athens last week  and spoke glowingly of the Bulldogs afterward.

But defensive lineman Gabriel Wright of Columbus came away with a different feeling. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound rising senior from Carver indicated the Bulldogs may have slipped a little in his eyes, especially after a contrasting visit to Alabama a couple of days later.

“I had a great time,” said Rome, who made the trip with teammate Malcolm Mitchell and coach Rance Gillespie last Thursday and Friday. “We came up Thursday night. I hung out with Mike G [Gilliard] and Orson Charles and a few of the other players. The next day we did a few tours. We met with [tight ends] coach [John] Lilly. I got sit in meetings with Coach [Mark] Richt and Coach [Mike] Bobo and they showed me how I’d be utilized in the offense.”

Rome said he enjoyed getting a chance to meet a lot of the current Georgia players and other prospects Georgia is recruiting. He said he hung out a lot with quarterback Christian LeMay, who has already committed to the Bulldogs.

“We just chilled and kicked it all day,” he said. “It was nice.”

Rome said he particularly liked meeting James Wilder Jr., a running back from Tampa rated by some as the No. 1 overall recruit in America. He said Wilder really likes the Bulldogs.

“I was looking at him like, ‘that’s a guy I’m going to be blocking for,’” Rome said.

Rome and Mitchell had to leave before the Dawg Night camp Friday night to return to Valdosta to prepare for a 7-on-7 tournament.

Meanwhile, Wright had a decent enough time at Georgia but his mother did no.

“It didn’t go well as I planned,” Wright said. “It was kind of rough on my mom. It was hot and they had us on our feet a lot. She has diabetes and she didn’t feel too well. So we ended up leaving a little early on Friday.”

Conversely, Wright went to Alabama a couple of days later and he said that went much better.

“Alabama was just so organized,” he said. “They had a golf cart for us to ride around in and the whole day was planned out. And at their camp, they probably had 700 kids there but I still talked to Coach [Nick] Saban at least three or four times. I don’t want to sound arrogant but they spent the most time with me.  I just came away feeling a lot better.”

Despite the impressive trip, Alabama was still not able to overtake Auburn on Wright’s list of favorites.

“Yes, Auburn’s still No. 1, definitely,” Wright said. “But Alabama really showed me something and they’re right up there.”

Wright said Georgia is now behind Alabama in a group that includes Tennessee and Clemson. He hopes to visit Clemson and Auburn again before the summer is out.

Two elite athletes, two visits at about the same time, two different opinions. Such is recruiting.

Who knows what is true and what is not true with Wright. He clearly loves playing the recruiting game and his list changes daily.

I do not know if it is true or not but I have heard that Gabe did not tell the whole story of what happened, that his mom mught have enjoyed herself more than he is letting on, and that he might be having a little fun whipping different teams internet recruiting message boards into a frenzy.

That’s 2nd off the record comment that James Wilder really liked UGA, oh man and I was hoping he would sign with Tech. Saw him play last year in Fl and he was awesome.

Got to give Coach Johnson credit, at one time all these schools were looking at Wilder as LB, Johnson was one of the few wanting him at RB.

Chip, as always, I thoroughly enjoy reading your recruiting posts. I know I asked the other day about Quan Bray and you said that you were going to try and catch up with him (thanks), but I thought I would also ask about another recruit who is really flying low under the radar: Justin Garrett out of Tucker. I am pretty sure the lack of recruiting info on Justin is due to James Vaughters, but do you think you can catch up with him and give us an update on his recruitment. Thanks!

I think Wright wants to stay close to home. Auburn is only about an 45 minutes from Columbus. Wright would really have a ball in Peachtree City if he likes golf carts that much. I would really like to see Crowell become a Dawg. If we get him, Rome and Drew that would make this a number one class in my view.

I think Rome is ours to lose. My scary scenario is that Wilder committs to Florida because he thinks Crowell will go to Georgia and conversely, Crowell might head to Bama if he thinks Wilder is the man. I guess time will tell.

Wilder will be a Gator by this weekend

….and if Mr. Rome wants to block for him….he needs to head south down I-75….

….and hey, Mr. Rome….imagine….Hunter Joyer right behind you as the two of you open another big hole on the right side of the Dawg 3-4 for Wilder to blast for yet another first down….and then, on the next play, Brantley or Driskell play action and hit you in the far left hand corner of the endzone for the 6th TD against the Dawgs that day (the Florida D scored 2 previously by the way).

Wright wants to be catered to. Everyone understands that recruiting is hectic and he and his mother should make preparations for the weather and her diabetes. No one is going to cater to their beck and call. If he doesn’t want to sign with UGA, move on and focus on someone that does. It is good to keep instate kids at home but, if they don’t want to commit and drag on the recruiting, move on to some one that wants to play. Mayes from Griffin sounds like he’s ready. Focus on Wilder and some more RBs before we get left out in the cold. Chip how is the recruiting going for Tobias Singleton?

Like to get Jay Rome, Isaiah Crowell, Ray Drew, Malcom Mitchell, Damian Swann, Xzavier Dickson, Justin Garrett, Quan Bray, Brandon Shell and maybe a flip from Vaughters and a surprise or two.

Now there’s a “Dream Team”.

Auburn can have Wright if he’s not interested. He seems a little undersized for the nose anyway. We’ll take Dakota Ball next year. Can’t play but one tackle at a time in the 3-4.

Anybody seriously predicting the downfall of the Gators hasn’t been paying attention. Their recruiting on the defensive side of the ball has been very good the last couple of classes. If they all pan out… ;)

Wright came to Athens trying to find something to help eliminate the Dawgs and it seems he found it. When you grow up only a few miles from Auburn and you have been told for years how great Auburn, UGA didn’t have a chance. If Wright had told someone at UGA of his mothers medical condition I’m sure UGA would have been more than glad to make her more comfortable and accommodate her in any way she wanted. This is on Wright not UGA. Unless he want to come to Athens and be a Dawg real bad and on his on I don’t want him at UGA anyway. There is no way this guy will sign with Alabama either. Rome would be great for UGA. I’m told Wright contradicts himself daily, so who really knows, but it sounds like he may eventually choose Auburn.

Wilder will be hard pressed by the Gators to stay home. Although the UGA offense is much more suited to him than UF’s spread.

Regardless of what Gator fans think/say, about Meyer switching to some pro-style sets, UGA has the history to prove it. No one knows what Meyer will actually do, but the safe bet is, he sticks with what has been successful in the past (and that’s not a power running game.) He may run a few plays from a power set, but just as a change of pace.

Regardless, one of the most recruiting seasons in a long time!

But….also..as Meyer also said….there is a lot of very good talent replacing the very good talent that left and there is a lot of enthusiasm about that talent by the Gator fans and the Florida coaches…..and especially about Brantley. A golf cart? Are you kidding me sounds like Mr Wright will not be coming to Athens. Maybe we should have had a scooter there for him to use. Way to early to get excited about Rome and Wilder but one can only hope. Go Dawgs.

If Wright had requested a cart for his mother he would have gotten one. He is planning to go to Auburn and is trying to blame UGA for not going there. Be a man and just say you want to go soewhere else. Drop the blame game.

Attention to detail is crucial, especially since his mother has been reported as the decision maker Wright’s recruitment. Another CMR failure…

TampaGator, your thinking sounds the same as a Bulldog fan. Love our talent that is taking over and hope that Murray does not get hurt. Should be a fun year for both schools with some ups and downs.

Athens police don’t allow golf carts on streets.
Neither do they allow students on streets.

Students on the streets are fine, shankit, as long as they aren’t student-athletes.

So now georgia fan does not want Wright???

Hmmm, just a few days ago he was the top DT on the ‘dream board’.
Typical stuff from uga fan. He will go to Auburn or UT and then
uga fans will treat him just like D. Rogers…
Stay classy!

made me laugh: Ray Drew has always been UGA’s top D-line target. But they’d love to have Gabe Wright, too.

Gabe sounds like a guy who doesn’t want to be a BULLDOG, if thats the the case, wish him luck and move on to the next one…would have been nice, but i promise you that Gabe will not break the bank of recruitment…UGA still has other targets…GO DAWGS

Based on a couple of other comments by Wright, he seems to have some animosity towards UGA. He crapped on the “dream team” concept. I’m not sure he really is interested in UGA at all. I’m not expecting him to commit to the Dawgs. Thats’ too bad, because we really need DL.

Al Groh and his NFL ring, Joe Namath ? $%#$

Groh can recruit ALL the 5 star kids, if he will just show his NFL ring and talk about the time that he met Lombardi in the late 60s and the fact that he once played against Joe Namath in the late 60s.

Tell em that and he will really relate to today’s kids. Right? is that not what CPJ told us??? He will relate, won’t he????

Namath? Heck, even today’s PARENTS have never heard of Joe Namath in the NFL.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHA

Chan is gone and now Tech has to live or die with CPJ’s boys. It does not look good.

CONFEDERATE DAWG – You can see what you are dealing with. This article is about GEORGIA recruiting and when you complain about fans from other schools commenting on this article about GEORGIA recruiting you get a nonsensical answer from some Florida fan. While I clearly get your point, they are so desparate for a place to rag GEORGIA fans they make a feeble attempt to explain why they are continualy on here commenting about articles that are clearly about GEORGIA.

Their problem is Georgia fans don’t read the Gainsville paper (I guess they have one). I never read articles about FLORIDA recruiting because I care about GEORGIA recruiting.

They’ve got no place else to go, so get used to it.
