DeBell, Theus become UGA commitments 14 & 15 at ‘Dawg Night’ (UPDATED)

ATHENS – Zach DeBell said he did not plan to commit to Georgia when he drove to Athens with his family for the Dawg Night camp on Friday. But he should have seen the signs.

The first one came when he stopped at a Wal-Mart just outside of town with his Mom, Dad and younger sister Samantha. He decided, for no particular reason, to buy a bathing suit. And the one he grabbed was red and black and emblazoned with a Georgia G.

“I actually bought a pair of Georgia swim trunks,” he said with a laugh. “I didn’t think about it at the time. I was like, you know what, I need a bathing suit; I’m going to buy a bathing suit.”

A couple of hours later DeBell committed Georgia head coach Mark Richt on the spot. He did it even before he and 100 or so college prospects took the field at the Woodruff Practice facility.

Swim trunks or not, it was a spontaneous decision, DeBell insisted.

“I surprised myself and my mom and dad,” said the 6-foot-7, 265-pound left tackle. “Coach Richt told us that there was only one spot left. I had asked him before to tell me when there was one spot and I knew there was only one spot and that’s what he told me. So I jumped on it.”

A couple of hours later, Nathan Theus displayed the same kind of spontaniety. The highly-touted, long snapper from Jacksonville committed on the practive fields shortly after completing kicking drills halfway through the 2 1/2-hour practice.

“I actually went into the camp open-minded; I didn’t know if I was going to commit or not,” Theus said. “I had planned to go to Florida’s Friday Night Lights next week. But when I got here, it really clicked. It really felt like home. It just felt really comfortable and I couldn’t stop myself from committing.”

With their pledges, the Bulldogs now have 15 commitments. However, in Theus’ case, he won’t enroll until January of 2012, effectively making him a “grayshirt.” But it’s something that Theus said he prefers. It will mean he will be in school the same time as his younger brother. John Theus, a 6-6, 274-pound tackle, is considered one of the top offensive line prospects of 2012. The brothers play for the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., where current Bulldogs Brent Benedict and Shaun Chapas graduated.

Nathan Theus becomes the first snapper Richt offered a scholarship right out of high school. Then again, Theus is not just any snapper. At a recent camp his snap times averaged from .63 to .65 seconds.

“Coach [Todd] Grantham said those are NFL times,” said Theus, who credits a decade of training at the Ray Guy Kicking Academy for his special skills.

With DeBell’s commitment, DeBell cut short a trip that was to have continued Saturday with a stop at Auburn.  The DeBells have been traveling all week with stops at South Carolina and Tennessee wrapped around two trips to the home of Zach’s late grandmother in Boone, N.C. But after giving the Bulldogs his commitment, he canceled plans to attend both the Tigers’ camp and Florida’s famous “Friday Night Lights” event next week in Gainesville.

DeBell has a total of 25 offers but ultimately chose the Bulldogs over South Carolina, Tennessee and Notre Dame. He said things might have turned out differently had the timing of in-state Gators been better.

“It’s kind of strange because my coach just informed me I think 20 minutes ago that Florida offered me,” DeBell said as he rode south down 441 about 11 p.m. Friday. “I said, ‘That’s great, but I’m a Dawg!’”

He shouted the last word.

DeBell and Theus were the only participants to make a move, but there were a lot of talented prospects getting a lot of attention Friday night.

James Wilder Jr. of Tampa and Isaiah Crowell of Columbus, two of the top running backs in America, looked on. So did Crowell’s Carver teammates Gabriel Wright and Deion Bonner, and five-star linebacker prospect Stephone Anthony of Wadesboro, N.C.

Already committed prospects such as quarterback Christian LeMay, wide receivers Justin Scott-Wesley and Zack Witchett and offensive lineman Hunter Long ran through drills.

Meanwhile 2012 prospects wide receiver C.J. Curry of North Hall and cornerback Geno Smith of St. Pius received scholarship offers. So it was an eventful night in Athens.

“I’m still soaking it all in,” DeBell said.

Read that Christian Lemay was #1 QB in 2010 class in Sportne News college football edition. This is going to be a class for the ages. Lemay needs some big OL in front of him, has his WR’s, needs to get a big-time RB to follow Ealey & King.

Why not, it’s called fighting fire with fire.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Every year UGA’s recruiting class is rated in the top ten. Then the team finishes 7-5. Why does anybody get excited about Dawg recruiting when it doesn’t matter how good the recruits are, the team will be mediocre?

Georgia just picked up the best long snapper in the country, according to scout. Oh yeah. Theus has great technique–really zips a tight ball, accurate placement on field goals, and punts. Special teams, particularly punting, are crucial to field position. Good to see Richt emphasizing special teams. You can win a lot of games with field position, and Georgia is going to win a ton of games over the next 4 or 5 years. This class is shaping up like the #1 class in the country.

We always recruit well…Now it’s time for Richt to prove he knows what to do with the talent. He is the only Georgia coach to have a ranked team and still lose to Vandy; He compounds that mistake with the Bama debacle two years ago; Can’t beat UF without an Unsportsmanlike call; and lost to both UT and UK last year when both of those teams were pathetic. Yet we are always a top 10 recruiting U. Come on Richt! Or LEAVE!!!

Richt is really giving two schollys to one player…the kids brother who is a highly regarded prospect for next year. But I think Meyer, the FSU HC (no…I won’t say his name), and Saban will be after the kid…so it might not be as easy as that. Been out late…the pillow is inviting.

TampaGator,
Give up the ghost on the younger brother going anywhere but UGA. Didn’t Chip say last night, in his conversation with Ms. Theus, she revealed that she asked the younger brother if he wanted to go ahead and commit right then as well but he felt he was too young? She said they always wanted to play together, etc……

Also, in Theus’ case, he won’t enroll until January of 2012, effectively making him a “grayshirt.” But it’s something that Theus said he prefers. It will mean he will be in school the same time as his younger brother. John Theus, a 6-6, 274-pound tackle, is considered one of the top offensive line prospects of 2012.

This is a package deal……bet any amount you like on it, you’ll win that bet.

Jeffersondawg, “i’m still scratching my head on why we took Long.”

I asked as well before, did we take Hunter Long simply b/c we already have his older brother Austin Long? I got an emphatic “no,” the coaches believe he can play. If you look at his stats he appears to need more upper body strength, which Searels will develop. Which would tell me, they believe he has needed skills in footwork.

We’ll see.

Florida wants two OL this year (already have one commit) and one or two next year. I think they will do fine without him. I believe FSU will make a harder run at him more than the Gators anyway.

On Long
Just kind of amazing nobody else was offering him other than
Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee State for crying out loud.
Dont get me wrong I think some of these OL like Debell will likely
be good in time – Watts too maybe after a redshirt year and lots
of conditioning. I think Richt could have signed some better linemen
for this class but maybe he doesn’t want to gamble and lose out on some
bigger targets down the road. I think the Da’Rick fiasco has changed the way he recruits. Just my opinion.

Bulldog59

TampaGator, interesting point about Florida being set with OL, and I’ve seen it before, almost everywhere.

I’ve never understood teams not recruiting “some” at a position every year. Seems like I’ve seen it backfire, i.e. suddenly a team has a very young set of DBs or OL, etc.

But, it’s a numbers game, and the coaches know it much better than me. Meyer has certainly had very few problems recruiting or winning to this point.

How many times has UGA had top ten classes? How many times have they won the NC? Will LeMay get to play this year in high school? How many will be in jail before getting to school? Can UGA ever beat FLA, USC, Kentucky, LSU, Bama in same year? Pre-season # 1- finishing # 1 is the goal!!

TampaGator

8:58 am

Bulldog59….Debell wanted to be a Gator (from everything I read about him up to now) but the rumor was he has entrance requirement issues at U of F….and probably at U of G as well….and why I think he eventually ends up with FSU…(who takes alomst anyone above a D- average….well, almost anyone). The Gators were in a wait-and-see mode concerning his academics and athletic progress this year. If he greatly improves both, the Gators might get back into the picture late with him(and if they don’t land some of there other prospects they have on the board)….therefore the soft commit is concerning his academics with the Georgia coaches as well.

JDawg…..I think you hit it on the head. The preferred method seems to be to redshirt linemen, give them a year to get bigger, stronger, and learn the blocking schemes and footwork. I’d expect Long, Debell, Dantzler, etal. to redshirt.

Also agree, we are “thanking our lucky stars” at this point at Rogers is wearing Orange. From 40+ years as a college football fan, experience says, he will have his picture taken again, both profile and full-face, with a number under it. Recruiting elite players with some troubled spots in their past is always a gamble. I’m not sure where you draw the line and say, bet on this kid, not on that one. I’m sure there is more emphasis on it now though. It will probably be a focal point of the discussion between CMR and the new AD whenever he/she arrives.

Here is my 2011 top 5 in order….for 2011
1. Alabama…..after winning their second NC in a row most likely…I think the Tide is going to be much better this year than they were last year….especailly on defense (NFL talent at almost every starting postion on D in 2011)…and the best HC in the country.
2. Florida…..loaded with young, future NFL talent and they are well coached….and will be lead by a top 1 to 3 NFL pick at QB in Brantley in 2011…but with Tide washing issues.
3. Miami…..loaded with a great mix of young and experienced talent at every position in 2011…HC game day coaching concerns???…but could challenge Ohio State and Bama in 2010 if Shannon gets it together down there.
4. LSU…..great talent….coaching concerns similar to Miami???
5. Georgia…..lots of talent…..maybe their defensive coach will make a difference….if Richt doesn’t get in the way….and they can work their way through the “red panties” issues (oh….I did it again!!!!)

Yes, that is four SEC teams….count ‘em…in the preseason top 5. Will not end that way….but probably will begin that way.

Bulldog59….I think DaRick’s parents probably wanted him to go to Tennessee…further away from “his friends” at home (and close to a good influence friend in Nash). Bulldog59

TampaGator, good list. Your key statement is, “will not end that way.” Actually “can’t” is more like it. We in the SEC beat each other and eliminate our own conference from showing the SEC strength by the end of the season.

Alabama plays LSU as well of course.

Recruiting is a key element. Richt’s top 5 national win %, 90 wins in 9 seasons, 6 final top 10 ranking finishes in 9 years, it all requires some excelent athletes. After dropping to #15 in recruiting last season, UGA is back in top 5 for recruiting, and has a class that’s shaping up to finish #1 in the country.

Add Richt’s coaching to great recruiting and talent, and it’s the formula he has used to gets his teams to finish in the top 10, 19 out of the last 24 seasons.

Mr. DeBell was offered by Florida. Did you read that?? Now, the other two, FSU and MIami as to “Why” these three were not recruiting him is mute. Miami and FSU are in the ACC and maybe he let them know early on that he much preferred big boy ball or the SEC. UT also was after him and ND and others.

Miami and FSU are like Pop Warner at Murphy Candler Park in N Atlanta. Geeeeeez. What are they and what conference are they in? Remember ………the ACC’s new TV dealwith ESPN is third in $$$ to SEC and Big Boy 10 ( Iowa ) and that folks, says it all. Mr. DeBell wants to compete with the big boys like LSU and BAMA and Florida and Ole Miss and UT ( in three years ) and Arkansas.

We will have to see what happens with Rogers now.
It seems like Tennessee is handling things with
him internally and he might sit a few games. I would
bet that Rogers either gets things in order now
or Dooley sends him packing just like Myles. He
is probably going to have to learn behind 3 or 4
veteran WRs at UT according to their depth chart
I looked at earlier plus they also brought in a
couple other tall/talented receivers.

By the way, any new news on #16? What about

I don’t understand all of the excitement for kids who aren’t going to be on campus for at least a year – no matter to which school they have a verbal committment. Hopefully things will work out well for them all but a lot can happen between now and September 2011 – grades, injuries, change of mind, etc. Only a few weeks now to the season openers and all of the recruiting talk can go back in the background.

I never had an employer ask me what classes I took to get my degree. I think it’s petty to try and justify your other 84 (or so) players having a better “Management” degree than a degree offered by a SEC school.

These guys clearly were being toyed with emotionally by the UGA staff who appeals to recruits with “academics,” ethics, NFL prospects and the atmosphere in Athens. Honestly, this is not the way to make a decision. The kids need to understand the odds of things, lay out a plan, conduct some decision models and then decide with their parents. The Tech coaching staff holds drills for the mind as well as the body, and it is why our players excel on and off the field. Besides, these guys were not being recruited by anyone else. Time for some football 2010 predictions. UGA with a young and confused defense
will be underdogs to 3 of the top four offenses in the SEC. The dogs lose to Florida,
Auburn, and Arkansas. You can add South Carolina to the loss column, Murry’s first SEC game in a very hostile environment. Even a good running game can’t save the dawgs. UGA should be favored against MSU ,UT, VANDY & KY but will lose one. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Richt’s seat will be as hot as Damen Evans after the dawgs go 3-5 in the SEC. ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently you guys don’t read very well. Zach DeBell was offered by the Florida Gators yesterday afternoon and Zach has turned them down. However, it doesn’t matter… you guys go after who you want and we’ll do the same.

FWIW – People from Alabama have been genetically crossbreed with mullet sporting aliens from Gainseville to form what is commonly known as a mutant Sasquatch that wears jean shorts and drives a Studabaker pick-up truck.

Swami – Please get a clue. UGA does not lose to the Gamecocks. South Cackalacki always finds a way to lose and this year will be no different. UGA as usual has a better team than the choads and will come out of sewer of South Carolina with victory in hand.

My Gal Sal,
Right, GTU’s “one and dones” are truly student athletes Let’s see Stephon Marbury, Derrick Favors, Chris Bosh (who looks like he is mentally challenged) all had a cup of coffee at Tech. Don’t come on here spewing your GTU academic snobbery when you sign guys who attend your school for 5 months an leave with no GPA. I am awaiting your reply.

Not when it has a Toyota engine, three different wheel sizes and more rust than a South Florida toilet seat.

Keep hearing about Florida Fans buying up tremendous amounts of red panties with the idea of stitching them together to create ONE GIANT RED BLOOMER to fly over Jacksonville Municipal during Ga./Fla. game. Can anyone confirm? May just be a rumor.

Jon P and Dawgs Run – Cut blocking, also called chop blocking, is legal. When it’s done from behind beyond a certain yardage beyond the line of scrimmage, or applied when the blockee is already engaged, the penalty is “Illegal chop block.” It doesn’t mean “chop blocking” is illegal. Similar to “Illegal uses of hands,” there are legal uses of hands, as well.

Terrell Davis’s NFL career was made on running behind Denver’s zone, cut-blocking scheme. Many other teams use or have recently used cut blocking, including Washington, Carolina, Green Bay, Houston and Oakland. Basically, anywhere Gibbs has been the OL coach.

Gibbs said he’d never take a running back or offensive lineman in the first 3 rounds. Also, the OL guys don’t have to be big. Warrick Dunn, Michael Vick and T.J. Duckett all benefited from the blocking scheme in Atlanta. Dunn replaced Duckett as the starter in 2004 (1st year under Mora) and gained 3,662 yards in 2004-2006, making the Pro Bowl in 2005.

The NFLPA wanted to outlaw it in 2005, but failed.
