Da’Rick Rogers’ status with Tennessee remains undetermined

Conspicuously absent from Tennessee’s news release on disciplinary action taken against players involved in Thursday’s night bar brawl in Knoxville was any mention of Da’Rick Rogers.

Rogers, a freshman wide receiver from Calhoun, was one of two Vols arrested after that 1:50 a.m. incident at Bar Knoxville on the Cumberland Avenue entertainment strip near the UT campus. The other, sophomore safety Darren Myles, was dismissed the team.

Myles, a Carver graduate from Atlanta, was charged by Knoxville police with assault, evading arrest and resisting arrest. It was his second arrest in three months, hence his dismissal. Two other players were suspended indefinitely.

Rogers was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. But there was no mention of the five-star wide receiver in the statement released by coach Derek Dooley Friday afternoon.

I asked UT sports communications chief Bud Ford for an explanation.

“Coach Dooley has left it open-ended pending the completion of the investigation,” Ford said Saturday. “I can confirm is that [Rogers] was one of [the UT] people that was at that location. There were nine or 10. I don’t know, it could be an internal situation.”

Ford said he did not know any specifics about the accusations against Rogers or any of the other players except what had been disclosed publically by police. He said Dooley is conducting his own independent investigation.

“I believe Coach Dooley knows what happened,” Ford said. “He’s looking at it from the standpoint of whether they handled the situation how he expects them to handle it. He said his investigation will be based on his standards.”

From initial police reports, Rogers’ role in unclear. Also uncertain are the roles of sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls and sophomore linebacker Greg King — both of whom were indefinitely suspended by Dooley.

Myles is alleged to have struck an off-duty police officer when a fight that started inside the bar moved outside. Myles then ran away and, at one point, was hiding underneath a parked car, police said.

Robert Capouellez, an off-duty Knoxville officer who tried to break up the fight, was hit in the head, knocked to the ground by several assailants and then kicked several times before falling unconscious. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

“Although we are still gathering all the facts and some legal proceedings will follow, we have taken some initial levels of discipline resulting from my conversations with the student-athletes who were present,” Dooley said. “I am respectful of the process that follows with the local authorities and with our institutional guidelines and leadership.”

Myles, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound rising sophomore, was rated the No. 9 safety in America coming out of Atlanta’s Carver High. He played in seven games for the Vols last season, recording seven tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass breakup.

Rogers (6-3, 215) was the top-rated prospect in Georgia last year. He set a state record for receiving yards in a season with 1,642. He was committed to UGA for eight months before switching to Tennessee days before National Signing Day in order to follow quarterback Nash Nance, his teammate and best friend, to Knoxville.

Dooley has vowed to toughen up on team discipline. The Vols have had an embarrassing stream of serious arrest in the last two years, including two players being dismissed last year after being arrested for armed robbery.

“As I have referenced on many occasions, a change in culture is achieved in time through a combination of education, discipline and support,” Dooley said. “We will aggressively continue to build on the many positive changes that have occurred over the last five months to ensure our program is represented with class and dignity.”

Two Georgia football players were arrested on alcohol-related charges early Saturday morning after their vehicle was pulled over by UGA Police.

Dontavius Jackson, 20, a backup running back, was charged with six misdemeanors: driving under the influence of alcohol, underage possession of alcohol, following too closely, leaving the scene of an accident, violation of the move-over law and violation of learner’s permit.

Tavarres King, 19, a starting wide receiver, was charged with underage possession of alcohol.

CAN WE GET AN UPDATE ON (more) UGA ARRESTS……

Is Rogers enrolled in school right now? I don’t think Da’Rick is actually anything but a visitor to Knowville right now. The Team has not reported because practice doesn’t start for a few more weeks. If Rogers is in a dorm and a student right now then you can call him a UT player, but if he isn’t in school yet is a signee and a kid on summer break. I am not sure can somebody that really knows give an answer.

We don’t all laugh of gloat…this is a sad situation be it at UT, UGA, or be it Derrick Morgan from Tech. These kinds of things happen at all schools. I can’t help but wonder why these young men insist on trying to ruin their lives when they have so much potential. It is disheartening whereever it happens.

DuhRick can’t survive this can he? It’s pretty bad luck the guy they beat down was a cop – they probably had no clue while they were kicking his brains in… Even so it’s probably in DuhRick’s best interest to leave Knoxville forever. Probably fresh out of night stick karma if you know what I’m saying. I think your boyfriend Opie will get more playing time with you at JaX State anyway.

Morgan from Tech was driving on suspender licens and speeding. Morgan was headed to Nashville to look around, find where to live, and check the place out. Morgan broke the law yes,but you really can’t compare a too fast drive up I-75 sober to what the UT and UGA people have been in to lately. I think Derrick now has the $210 fee to reinstate his drivers license.

dawgforlife–The reason is two fold. 1. They are still at the age where they still believe “it may happen to others but it won’t happen to me.” Why do adults(Damon Evans) still drive while drinking after seeing one after another killed in wrecks, etc. 2. They are pandered and undisciplined at school and at home–especially the star athletes. They get away with anything at school and no one is allowed to discipline them. It might hurt their self-image. And God is not allowed in school. It might ofrfend someone. We treat them like they are gods and wonder why they act invincible!
Isn’t it interesting that they say its a mothers right to decide to murder her unborn child, yet after its born, she is not evenallowed to spank them!

Driving while drinking beer and leaving the scene of an accident is very bad. As a UGA grad, I say impose the harshest sentence on both and let them make it up. The car thing, well that could be another non school related issue. Whatever they did ………..impose their medicine. Make it stick.

Rogers and UT? That entire episode is far worse than drinking beer while motoring and having open cans of beer while driving. Still ………..as a UGA grad, I say sock it to the UGA men. If they do not like it, let em leave. It was their choice to drink and drive on a learner’s permit. Why not ask the bimbo with them to drive???

The Rogers kid just might skate by Dooley’s radar, as he may techincally be just a kid visiting his pals at UT. Now, come summer camp, he will be under Dooley’s watch as offically a member of the UT squad. So, if he now is just a kid visiting, CDD will have no say ………… I think. In other words, they all live off campus, Dooley has no say in that anymore than some guy that works at Alcoa Aluminum over in Maryville.

This could give DaRick a free pass but with dire warnings for the next time. I am happy that that thug Myles was bown out like the newspaper full of dead fish. He is gonna end up a sad statistic of DOA, Soon to be DOA or in jail or just out of jail. Kids of his race between the age of 16-25 end up badly, when using the sheer and irrefutable stats on this subject. He is on course to be in that elite group.

I feel this way about my Bulldogs too. Give em no quarter ……….. they are living better than they ever have and the gooduns can skip town soon and turn pro and make $$$. The least they can do is act like men and not like animals.

My Golden is fabulous. She was easy to house break when we got her at about 9 weeks old. She always knew to fetch sticks and swim. She loves being around kids and is comfortable with strangers that we meet. She now is one fabulous companion and hunter and camper pal and family dog. Her DNA tells her how to act, how to react and how to live and be a happy dog. It has prgrammed her to be the way she is. We are too programmed with some external help.

DNA is the indicator ……………….it instructs us on who and what we are. My GG grandfathers were ultra successful, the women in our family have been too. Now, my kids are embarking on their ultra successful lives ……………. it is in their DNA program do do this, with some parental guidence along the way.

Most of the inner city kids and poor folks already have once strike agains them …………look at their forebears. Sad but true.

Because they are still young people and dumb as hell. Yes, the AD situation should’ve awakened the entire Bulldawg Nation but some are too ignorant to survive it seems. Your AD just lost his job and more importantly, his family, and these idiots are out drinking and driving (leaving the scene of an accident and underage not to mention) and breaking numerous other laws. Those that live in glass houses well, buy a mirror! Growing up, my brother did a lot of stupid things. Alcohol being the majority of offenses. My father would reign down hell upon him when he did. Know why that never happened to me? Because I learned from other’s mistakes. Listen up Bulldawgs. You are given a tremendous opportunity at one of the nation’s finest institutions. Just stop it already. Enough is enough. Tired of watching these immature morons throw everything away. Playing football at UGA is a privilege, not a God given right. And UGA has the right to revoke that priviledge at any time they see fit. I would not care who this happened to, they deserve whatever punishment comes their way. Thank God no one was injured or killed. Please guys, wake up and start learning you are not above the law or anything else. You are a football player and that’s it. Start appreciating all that is given to you and do something productive with it starting now.

Don’t know if the kids in the photo are properly identified or not, but the pants on the one in front tell me all I need to know. I’m sure that “standard” exists on all teams, but if I was a head coach, representing (a lack of respect for) yourself like that would be enough for me to sit you on the bench. And don’t tell me it’s a racial thing. I’ve seen white kids dressed like that too, and it only spells trouble. In fact, one sat in front of us at a high school game, and when he stood up, his pants fell to his ankles. Instantly, five dads converged on the confused young man grabbing his pants, explained the standards expected at a public event, and escorted him to the gate. Doesn’t matter to me if they’re from UT, UGA or GT. All must be held accountable according to their involvement.

Do the schools (or the NCAA) offer orientation for student athletes like the NFL rookie symposium, with dos and don’ts and how to handle yourself and notoriety? If not, why not? It’s time the tails quit wagging the dogs.

POAD you need to know what you are talking about before posting. DuhRic IS enrolled in classes at UT just like freshmen signees are at EVERY school. They don’t show up in Aug for practice, they move and enroll in June. Duh Rik is a member of the Tenn football program. However if he wasn’t enrolled but committed the acts for which he was arrested, Dooley could still discipline him or withdraw his scholarship. One not being yet enrolled does not insulate that player from consequences of illegal behavior. Interesting to me is Duh Rik was arrested with Myles, Myles has been booted, two other players suspended who weren’t arrested. Another little tidbit, Janzen Jackson who was part of the armed robbery trio was involved in the altercation yet he hasn’t been booted or suspended. Let me clear this entire UT situation up for all – Myles was expendable, the two suspended players aren’t significant players, hence Janzen Jackson who is a star and Duh Rik escape punishment. UT is not going to dismiss or suspend “significant” players but they don’t hesitate to put the hammer down on those who are less talented or 3rd stringers.

Please, while 2 Georgia players arrested for underage consumption is unacceptable it is hardly comparable to assault of a law enforcement officer, or starting a brawl in a bar where you are the VIPs. At Georgia the discipline is the same no matter the player, certainly not the case at UT.

Captin you do know that Da’rick is in school and taking classes? That is what I asked because most college kids that don’t graduate early from high school and start college in January don’t enroll for the summer. Most kids enjoy their summer before the practices start. I am real sure that not all or even close to most incoming freshman football players are taking classes in the summer. Unless something has changed All incoming freshman start in the Fall (unless they graduated high school early) and go through orientation . Captain I don’t doubt that Da’Rick could be in school. I would like somebody that knows for real. If Da’Rick is not enrolled then he is a Kid visiting Knoxville and I think Dooly has no legal leg to stand on to punish the kid. I did say it seems to me that Dooley’s only real thiing he could do is to not let the kid keep his scholarship or give the kid a pass. I will get intouch with some guys on the Tech team and see what they say about freshman taking summer classes.
