Recruitment of WR DaVaris Daniels takes dramatic turn

DaVaris Daniels’ recruitment is turning into quite a drama.

As I reported in this morning’s “Ten at 10,” the highly-touted wide receiver out of Vernon Hills, Ill., abruptly canceled a press conference he had scheduled for noon Tuesday. According to a Chicago Sun Times report, Daniels was expected to commit to Miami over Notre Dame at that time.

As you may also know, Daniels’ father is none other than UGA letterman and Georgia native Phillip Daniels, a longtime NFL player most recently with the Washington Redskins. Well, somebody claiming to be Daniels absolutely lambasted the author of the Sun Times article, calling it “a fabrication” and “a bunch of lies.” In particular, Daniels took exception to the story’s assertion that Daniels could not academically qualify for admission to Notre Dame, his first choice, which is why he was going to commit to Miami, his second choice.

Click on THIS LINK and you can see Daniels’ (alleged) comment in the comments section below the article.

Meanwhile, Daniels’ recruitment by his father’s alma mater remains somewhat of a mystery. What is known is that the Bulldogs have not offered the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Daniels a scholarship. This is frustrating to Phillip Daniels, who has personally weighed in on it before on the fan forum at UGASports.com.

It has been theorized that the Bulldogs — who are in need of wide receivers — simply want Daniels to attend a camp so that can get a first-hand assessment. As of this writing Daniels hasn’t done that.

Nevertheless, Daniels is considered one of the best prospects in the greater Chicago area and has more than a dozen scholarship offers. So he has some choices. Looks like he’s going to take some more time to consider them.

Stay tuned. This one could get interesting.

The thing with DaVaris Daniels is that he has yet to come down to a camp so he can show his skills off the coaches and so the coaches can develop a personal bond with him. If some of you would check out UGAsports.com you will see a kid by the name of Ty Montgomery starting to come up. This kid came to camp a couple of weeks ago all the way from Dallas. You are telling me an ex-Dawg who has ties to the program and is from the state of GA has not pushed his kid in attending a camp at UGA?? Seems kind of odd if he hasn’t.

I am sure the coaches know how good DaVaris is but they want him to attend these camps so he can match up against the top talent that comes to these camps. This Ty Montgomery recruit is currently committed to Stanford, but as you may all recall that was the same case with Justin Scott-Wesley as he was committed to the same school and then decommitted and wants to be a Dawg. Just judging by what the coaches have said about Montgomery is that the kid is a “beast” and has bonded with the staff. That is why the coaches are after Montgomery cause he made the trip to Athens while being committed to Stanford. It just shows that this kid is willing to take a chance on Mark Richt and the Dawgs. As we all know recruiting can become very interesting at times and the only thing that matters with these recruits is when they come in….how will they pan out in terms of the success they have on and off the field.

[...] Show parents, you make the internet go ’round. Let’s see if we have this all straight: We’ve got DaVaris Daniels, a hot Illinois WR prospect, calling off a Tuesday press [...]

Oh Da’Rick was the bomb until he decided to go to Tennessee
and then he became the most overhyped player in the world.
No wonder so much fun is made of Georgia football fan. Peace!

Dear Coach Richt -

I don’t want you offering him if he doesn’t make the effort to attend camp.

And keep that “Dream Team” thing going. All we get out here in Boise are 2 and 3 stars. Then we have to coach them up. I can’t wait to be able to coach up highly rated recruits for a change.

The little Mrs. has been looking at houses in Athens. It’s hotter and more humid but I told her she’ll get used to it.

Keep up the good job in recruiting.

All the best,
Chris

ckgator he would rather play for CUM as CUM has promised he will share his MEDS with him. And North Ave Killer Beez CMR manages to coach well enough to stomp muholes in the Bees 8 out of 9 years something the Wattle Neck Goon will never be able to say about UGA.

All GT fans should know that Chip is a uga homer, for god’s sake he’s a uga journalism grad what do you expect! Asking Chip to be even handed in is reporting of GT recruiting would be like asking me the great Herschel Walker the Locker Room Stalker to sing the Rambling Wreck song after my MMA fights. It just ain’t gonna happen folks

There world is full of three types of people.

1) Those that think Chip is a UGA homer.

2) Those that think Chip is a UGA hater.

3) Those that know better.

All in favor of the latter say aye. Aye!

The kid needs to attend a camp. Period. Phillip was one hell of a dawg and if his son is drawing quality offers he must be decent also. PD needs to get his son to Athens and meet the coaches IF that is where he wants his son to be. Not a bad place to be either with the QB talent we supposedly have.

This is the AJC. As in Atlanta…. As in Georgia. It is the State school. UGA is more popular, hated, and divisive than any other school in the city. And you wonder why Chip would reporton them? Idiots.

I do not know Davaris but I do know his old man personally. I am a UGA alum and was there from ‘93 to ‘97. Big Phil played almost every position in high school (QB, PK, P, RB, LB, DE….) and played them well. It is scary that Davaris is not just cut from the same cloth but did the same thing in high school. Their work ethic and integrity is impeccable. If you lined up every workout horse in the NFL from 1 to infinity…Phil will destroy anyone in the gym and comes to camp healthy (2004 the exception), ready and above all with a non-stop penchant for football. The Daniels family are a class act and it’s hard for me to stomach putting the onus on their family to fly him down for a camp when they can just as sure get on a plane and watch a game, film, etc. Hines Ward was the same kind of player (gritty, tough as nails and multi-faceted) but above all the one thing Hines and Phil had in common…..they never quit! Georgia football needs players like Davaris who are model student athletes outside the hedges but will punch your $%#^$& mouth loose between them. Go Dawgs!

I’m a Georgia Southern Alum and fan… But I know that the AJC is going to report on UGA and GT when it come to recruiting. It just makes sense. If any other recruiting stories have relavance to the state/ATL, then Chip will report that also.

Something funny with this whole thing and it makes you wonder if there really is something up with his grades or another matter if all he has to do is attend a camp. Is this kid so special he can’t do what what most other kids do and attend camp after camp to show and refine skills.

Just drove thru Athens on my way to the N.C. mountains and did a little stop by tour of UGA for the first time since mid 90’s. Still a pretty campus but you could fit the entire school in one corner of the UF campus. In size, depth and scope…really doesn’t compare to UF. There, that should get the Dawgs going! LOL

Why is Georgia offering out of state players like Phillip Dorsett when there are plenty of wide receiver prospects in Georgia and they’re asking Georgia players to be loyal to them with this Dream Team nonsense? Loyalty only runs in one direction?

Philip Daniels is one of those UGA guys who quitely went on to the Pros and had a long and successful career-his future at the redskins is somewhat cloudy given his age but he is a team leader works hard in camp and is a genuine class act-

Maitland Mike: Where does CUM speand his Thursdays with his family?
That was a really bizzare aspect of the whole CUM meltdown that no one spoke of. CUM said, “Thursdays are family days at the University of Florida”. The unspoken truth was he never spent those days with his family. Maitland don’t worry about UGA. Worry about our family days at UF.

CHIP-

What is the latest on Charone Peake? I have heard from some fairly reliable sources that the Dawgs really want him and feel that they have a very good shot at getting him. Are they waiting for his decision before offering any more scollys to WR prospects?

Any word on LeMay? Has CMR been made privy to the inside scoop on him? I do not believe that it is anything serious because I feel sure that this kid has impeccable character. I just believe his school is very strict and not willing to compromise it’s position, even to their star QB.

What say you?

Okay, Knack. Thanks.

With that being said, I believe he will eventually de-commit from that west coast school due to family considerations. Kids want to play in front of family and friends and Harbaugh isn’t going to be able to sustain his winning or his popularity with recruits. He is working off of his one flash- in- the- pan. Won’t last.

PowerDawg, plus Harbaugh might not even be there if RichRod doesn’t win a few this year. Lot of Michigan people want him back in Ann Arbor. However this Peake kid is suppose to be a smart one too so it looks like he is going for the education. Kudos to him.

Da’Rick is fast, give you that, only broke TK’s record by a few yards though against a team with 0 secondary coverage. I was at the game, 9 yr olds could have caught against them. Doesn’t matter how fast though if the ball never gets to him, he refuses to block if thats the case as well. Not to mention the awful standard the Nances’ set by indirectly recruiting a player for UT saying he was like a “son” so they bought him all kinds of things for staying with Nash to UT, who never was recruited by them and committed to Vandy until magically Da’Rick decided he wanted to switch? But then again guess ditching your grandmother, who raised you, for a rich white family is acceptable to some of you if your “a good receiver”. But if you would like to reach Da’Rick to ask him personally you can find him in summer school trying to graduate.

CMR made a public statement about being short on this position this year, I also heard that they will sign a full 25 this year. If they are going to use Charles as a TE then they could use as many WRs as they can get and it sounds like he is pretty good, they don’t all have to be the highest rated at their positions. I mean look at Rennie Curran AND David Pollock and Brannan Southerland, look what an impact these men had and I don’t remember them lighting up the recruiting boards. Another couple of pretty good players on the current roster, Daryl Gamble and Baccari Rambo, these men totally flew under the radar. What about David Greene, and I could go on and on.

I know Davaris personally I played football and basketball with him actually . The kid is a great talent and academically has really worked hard over the past two years to put himself in a position to succeed. Everyone needs to drop this and let him come to his own decision like he deserves to do. He is a humble and passionate human being who deserves some respect. Stop speculating and let a young kid come to a decision without being pummeled by the media or outside sources.
