Recruitment of WR DaVaris Daniels takes dramatic turn

DaVaris Daniels’ recruitment is turning into quite a drama.

As I reported in this morning’s “Ten at 10,” the highly-touted wide receiver out of Vernon Hills, Ill., abruptly canceled a press conference he had scheduled for noon Tuesday. According to a Chicago Sun Times report, Daniels was expected to commit to Miami over Notre Dame at that time.

As you may also know, Daniels’ father is none other than UGA letterman and Georgia native Phillip Daniels, a longtime NFL player most recently with the Washington Redskins. Well, somebody claiming to be Daniels absolutely lambasted the author of the Sun Times article, calling it “a fabrication” and “a bunch of lies.” In particular, Daniels took exception to the story’s assertion that Daniels could not academically qualify for admission to Notre Dame, his first choice, which is why he was going to commit to Miami, his second choice.

Click on THIS LINK and you can see Daniels’ (alleged) comment in the comments section below the article.

Meanwhile, Daniels’ recruitment by his father’s alma mater remains somewhat of a mystery. What is known is that the Bulldogs have not offered the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Daniels a scholarship. This is frustrating to Phillip Daniels, who has personally weighed in on it before on the fan forum at UGASports.com.

It has been theorized that the Bulldogs — who are in need of wide receivers — simply want Daniels to attend a camp so that can get a first-hand assessment. As of this writing Daniels hasn’t done that.

Nevertheless, Daniels is considered one of the best prospects in the greater Chicago area and has more than a dozen scholarship offers. So he has some choices. Looks like he’s going to take some more time to consider them.

Stay tuned. This one could get interesting.

Well get the ball rolling…. The young man needs to get into camp and showcase his talents. His father should know enough about how the process works to handle it correctly.

Before the bashers fire up, let me say that I applaud the UGA recruiters for not chasing after him just bc his daddy played here. I think it’d be a nice story if he garnered an offer on his own merit, but I think UGA should be applauded for not jumping when this kid’s dad says to. If that was in fact what he was doing previously. Otherwise, if they want to give the courtesy of a camp invite and he won’t take it, oh well. Perhaps he knows he’s not good enough and should go somewhwere else… IMO

Why won’t he just attend a camp then? If his father is truly that interested in him playing at Georgia, then get him a plane ticket and fly him down for the next camp!

Chip, my best source (and he is always a source of solid info) told me weeks ago that the coaches simply want Daniels to attend a camp to get a first hand look at him, talk to him, etc., before they make any sort of decision. Could it be that Phillip Daniels believes his son shouldn’t have to “audition” at UGA? If that is the case, I side with CMR and Co. on this one.

We all know CMR doesn’t like drama. Best bet for this kid is to attend a camp and strut his stuff. Dad knows the process very well.

Here’s a great recruiting slogan for Richt and his assistants, directly from the immagination of the Georgia SI department….

“Come, you can be a part of the Georgia Bulldog ‘DREAM DREAM’….the place where ‘DREAMS’ never end!”

Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

Georgia is one of two local teams, and for some reason Georgia Tech is having no luck signing anyone, logic would dictate that the Dawgs would dominate the recruiting page of the Atlanta paper.

Tech was mentioned in the 10 at 10. They lost Clay Burton to ND.

Hold on. Each player should be evaluated and recruited based upon their own abilities. Of course if a parent or sibling has played there they should at least get a look. But I hardly see that recruitment based simply upon genealogy is a wise approach.

Chip – I am a UGA alum and I know you do not have time to police these blogs, but you did ban POAD when he was using more than an acronym. Same should apply to YellowSkeeters are PeterEaters and blackprix. Living here in Amsterdam, I am no prude, but I do think there are young prople coming to these blogs whose parents (I have a young teenage son) do not want them exposed to such juvenile and delinquent behavior. Besides, what applies to one should apply to the others – no matter what team they pull for.

DaVaris is a special talent and could play at any school in the country. He’s that good. Oklahoma has offered, Miami has offered, Notre Dame has offered, Michigan has offered. Those are some pretty good programs. I agree with one of the previous comments. If UGA wants him to come to camp and the Daniels family wants him to attend Georgia…just go to the camp. You’re good enough. If you don’t get an offer, what are you out? You still have a several other very good offers. I wish DaVaris and his family the best. I’ve been in this business for 14 years. Take your time, nobody is putting a gun to your head to commit. Shut your recruitment down this summer. Take your 5 OFFICIAL VISITS that the NCAA is giving you and make an educated decision. Visit the schools, check out the academics which should be priority No. 1. You spend the most time in your college career with your strength coach, do you like him? How about your position coach? Do you get along with the guys on the team? This isn’t a process that shouldn’t be handled carelessly. That’s why we have a ton of de-commitments every year. Nobody does their do diligence any more.

Like Father, like son? nope

90% of the time, the son of the coach or of the former all world player never pans out. I mean, way back when in the mid to late 70s UGA recruited Jeff Pyburn out of Athens to play ball. Jeff was an athlete but not a quality QB at the needed level and his time on the team was very devisive. His daddy was at that time UGA’s Offensive co ordinator and he and Vince were really divided ……… prior to this, they had attended Aubrun together as teamates and pals.

We ran the Veer and QB Jeff had lousy hands and always made a shaky pitch and an fumble ensued. Finally, Belue arrived and we righted the ship. Coach Pyburn left for HS coaching job.

This is not a son of a Bulldog thing, but it does illustrate the issues with having nepotism rule. If the Daniels kid is FAST and has some size and quickness and great hands, maybe we can take a look. There are simply too mnay such players in Georgia and Florida to care.

Go Dogs.

Juicy!

“It has been theorized that the Bulldogs — who are in need of wide receivers — simply want Daniels to attend a camp so that can get a first-hand assessment. As of this writing Daniels hasn’t done that.”

That makes sense to me. There are a lot of very good WR prospects out there. If UGA can get an up close and personal look at enough WR’s, there really isn’t much of a reason to go chasing after another one across the country just because his father played here. Besides, recruiting can be a two way street. If the kid has interest in playing for the dawgs, he can certainly send in video’s or attend camps.

That said, since we missed out on Charone Peak (sp?) maybe we can start to open up to some new people.
