USF willing to take a chance on Stephenson’s Willie Davis

How good is Willie Davis?

The truth is, nobody really knows — including Davis. But everybody is eager to find out. And so is South Florida, which recently received a verbal commitment from the Stephenson running back.

There is, after all, a limited body of work off which to judge Davis. As a junior last season he played in the shadows of tailback Raymond Sanders, a Kentucky signee and one of the top backs in the state.

“I wouldn’t say shadows,” Davis injects. “I’d just say I’ve just been waiting for my opportunity. But I’m as eager as anybody else to see what’s going to happen.”

What people have seen, they like. And what’s not to like?

Davis (5-11, 195) rushed for nearly 700 yards while playing in only six games as a backup/backfield mate for Sanders. And he has raised his stature while camping and visiting all over the South this spring and summer with many of his Stephenson teammates.

Davis is approaching double-figure offers, with tenders from the likes of West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, Louisville, Marshall and others. Others still have been looking hard but have yet to offer.

But the South Florida Bulls have been with Davis from the outset. And he rewarded them with a verbal commitment during a visit to the Tampa campus the weekend before last.

“I really like the coaching staff and what all they had to offer,” Davis said of the USF program, now under the leadership of former East Carolina coach Skip Holtz. “The facilities down there are nice and everything really. They actually have a good opportunity for me to go down there and get established quickly. I just felt like it was the best opportunity and situation for me.”

But it’s not likely to be the only situation for Davis. ACC and SEC schools continue to court and evaluate Davis. And Davis continues to evaluate them.

In fact, he spent this past weekend in Nashville touring Vanderbilt. Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and several others have shown continued interest.

“I actually got some advice on that while I was down [in Tampa],” Davis said. “Some of the players told me and [teammate] Kadetrix [Marcus] to finish our visits and make sure your choice is the right one. That’s what I plan to do.”

Very impressive. You must be deep to have a back like that as your backup.

Davis is impressive. But so was Raymond Sanders last year. Kentucky got a good one . Sanders looked like a better back than Mack Brown last year.

poopdawg,

I agree that Sanders looked alot more talented but you have to remember that Mack Brown was dealing with a hamstring injury for the bettter part of the season. I don’t understand why UGA did not pursue Mr. Sanders after Mack commited to UF, I guarantee you we would have gotten him if we put the full-court pressure on him.

Chuy Dawg , I heard about the injury but there appeared to be a desire issue also. Time will tell. I’ m sure as bad as everyone wanted Brown the injury was a factor in his performance.

Great looking kid. However, a 2.9 at Stephenson HS isn’t very good at all. That HS is infamous for inflating athletes grades. I wonder what his SAT score was?????

USF sounds like the best spot for Davis. Skip is a really good coach and Tampa is a really good town.

tech rules stephenson is infamous for inflating GPA where do you get your info from. i get sick and tired of every time one of stephenson kids get an article on this blog someone tries to tear them down> no one said anything bad about the last three kids on here but you try to attack the kid and his school. You are truly garbage sir. if our GPA’s are so inflated why is your school recruiting so many of our players. the only thing inflated is your ego and your mouth.

You have to respect how he considers USF for being the first to offer him. Sounds like he has some humility, which is a rare and good trait these days.

That video must show all 700 of his yards. Did he have any plays where he dove into the middle for one tough yard?

DOUBLEDOWNDAWGFAN wake up from your dream. For instance the current Rivals data has Florida commits with a 3.7 total rating and Georgia with a 3.1 total rating. Now compare rated postions that have been recruited so far that are the same – QB: Driskell (FL) #1 over Lemay #3 (GA) OL: Danzler # 34 (GA) over Jordan #44 (FL) LB: Shazler #9 (FL) over Herron #15 (GA) DE: Pagan #3 (FL) over Bailey #5 (GA) ATH: Sanders #30 (FL) over Marshall #31 (GA) WR: McRoy #11 (FL) over Wesley #12 (GA). Again Dawg fans wake up from you dreamland. THE GATORS WILL ALWAYS RULE YOU! AND we won’t even talk about the comparison of last year’s recruiting classes because that will give you a nightmare!!!

Son, we have a DREAM TEAM! Get over it! CMR has ordained this recruiting class the best ever in history. Textbooks will be writing about this recruiting class….UF will be studying the mere greatness of this DREAM TEAM! We will win 4 NC’s with this DREAM TEAM!

Dream Team? Your best players lately have been from out of state. Careful what you wish for. The recruiting isn’t the problem at UGA. You need to dig a little deeper.

Also, congrats to Mr. Davis, sine that is what this article is about. I think he will do fine at USF. Statistics show that if you want to play D1 football, Stephenson isn’t a bad place to be.

I think Richt should be going after him as well. Dekalb County players have had a decent track record at UGA recently. He recruited a great RB out of Stephenson by the name of Kregg Lumpkin and a great RB from Tucker by the name of Thomas Brown. Maybe ya’ll have heard of those guys? Both of them were true Bulldogs and didn’t give Richt a lick of trouble off the field. Richt seems to have gone out of state more recently, which is unfortunate when you consider that there really is some great instate talent like Raymond Sanders and Willie Davis.
