Georgia Tech gets two commitments as summer recruiting ramps up

Good morning. I’m back from vacation. Did I miss anything?

Just kidding. I know I missed a lot.

Fortunately, thanks to our high schools writer Michael Carvell, you did not. Carvell stayed on top of all the important recruiting news in the Prep Zone Blog. Be sure to go back and check it out if you, too, were out of the loop last week.

Among the topics Michael covered while I was out:

And there was more that Michael wasn’t able to get to.

Georgia Tech got a pair of commitments over the weekend in linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days of Hillgrove High and offensive lineman Shaq Mason of Columbia, Tenn. And Monroe Area defensive end Stephon Tuitt, one of the top prospects in the state, narrowed his choices — in order — and has a new leader. I have interviews with all those guys and will share updates on them later today or tomorrow.

In the meantime, the first thing I’m going to get to today is a follow-up on the Nick Marshall-to-Georgia news. While on vacation, I had a long conversation with his coach at Wilcox County, Mark Ledford, and a short one with Nick (he is a pretty quiet-spoken young man). As you probably know, Marshall has been in the middle of an intense tug-of-war between Tech and Georgia and he and his coach shed some light on that situation in the interview account I’ll share with you later this morning.

Be sure to check back throughout the day as I’ll update the blog with news continuously as I play catch-up after vacation. While we’re at it, go to the comments section and let me know of any recruiting subjects you’re eager to read about in the next couple of weeks and feel free to ask questions about these and other subjects.

Thanks, again, for the brief respite. Glad to be back.

Jabari Hunt-Days – LB, nice. Is he to one with a cousin in Florida that’s looking at Tech.
Shaq Mason – 6′2″ 305 lbs OL
Tech is racking up on offensive line.
Recuiting is looking real good this year for Tech so far.

I’d like to know what kind of class UGA’s going to have to recruit in order to meet “Dream Team” expectations. Can you give us the remaining pieces of the recruiting puzzle they’ll need to put together? Thanks!

The “Dream Team” right now is nothing more than a marketing ploy that has been picked up by some Georgia media including the AJC. If Georgia were to pick up Vaughters, Drew, Rome, Crowell plus a Wilder from Florida plus a Clowney from South Carolina, then I think you could legitimately start using that label.

I love it how Tech fans talk up the mediocre recruits they land, and talk down the stellar recruits UGA gets.

There us no more pathetic and desperate fan base in all the land.

UGA fans prove once again that beating Tech is their only goal in life. A trip to Shreveport and a win over Tech is a success to UGA fans.

No wonder you guys have done nothing since 1980. All you care about is beating a weak little engineering school in a crappy conference.

All this vitriolic, mindless slamming of each other (Dawgs & Jackets) bores me. Let the slamming be one on the field where it counts for something. As a UGA graduate, I love to see Tech do well in recruiting and I love to see them win as many games as possible. Am I stupid for this line of reasoning? When you consider we play Tech last, why would anyone not want them ranked as high as possible. To be the best, you need to beat the best. Those deciding who goes where in the bowls are really watching the last game of the season. So go ahead, Teh – kick some butt until the last game of the season. It makes this expat in Amsterdamdamdam happy, happy happy.

Chip, your headline doesn’t match the article. You drew us into the article thinking that we would read more about Tech’s recruits, then you went off into some drivel about other school’s recruits and your own absence. Gather some real information, then write a useful article.
No article at all is better than one like this.

Chip, you should check with Tuitt after the GT camp this last weekend. The article purporting a new leader (Miami) used an interview before he came to our camp. He’s also upped his timetable to before August now after the camp.

I’m with you Amsterdam. I went to Tech but have always been a UGA fan. I don’t understand the immaturity of some of these people. I see a few nice UGA comments on here, but still too many trolls.

I’d like to see UGA at 14-0 and Tech at 13-1 every year.

Rambleon84, did you make all the trips to Boise, the Seattle bowl, the emerald nut bowl? Tech won any bowl games lately? Why is it Tech have the need to insult 18 year kids with comments like can they read, Tech is offering some of the same players. Tech envy for UGA LMAO.

I hope that Tuitt will do well at the next level. If he does, it sure as hell won’t be because of the winning tradition established by his high school head coach, who failed to win even a single game in the past two seasons. Monroe Area was 0-20 during its two years in 8-AAAA and was outscored by 346 points (598 – 252) during those two seasons. Don’t get me wrong – Tuitt, by all accounts, is a great kid and a better prospect, but the Hurricanes have been little more than a fall shower under Matt Fligg…..

RambleOn84. Come on man, are you kidding?

“No wonder you guys have done nothing since 1980.”
CMR has been at UGA 9 years, 2 SEC Titles, lost a third to the eventual BCS Champion. Several top 10 FINAL rankings, including a #2 in 2007.

“All you care about is beating a weak little engineering school in a crappy conference.” It’s on our “to do” list every year, but we have several more pressing priorities above this one.

Cleveland, OH Jacket – nope – All the coaching staff did for two years was whine about being the smallest AAAA school and how unfair it all was. Well, the Hurricanes were 5-15 the previous two seasons in 8-AAA. Fligg is 5-35 in four years at Monroe Area and his best mark was a 3-7 season in 2007. Monroe Area hasn’t had a winning season since a 6-4 mark in 2003, and has rarely even been competitive. Why Fligg hasn’t been shown the door is beyond me……………
