Georgia Bulldogs get commitment 11 from Nick Marshall, who will play DB

In case you missed it, there was some big recruiting news overnight.

As Michael Carvell reports in the Prep Zone Blog — I’m on vacation in Florida — Wilcox County quarterback Nick Marshall committed to Georgia last night. What’s more, he has agreed to join the Bulldogs as a defensive back and will also play basketball.

Marshall fits well into Georgia’s “Dream Team” theme. He is a consensus Top 5 prospect in the state. I had him at number 3 in my “Tentative Top 10″ for the state’s loaded class of 2011.

Marshall chose the Bulldogs over Alabama, Florida State and Georgia Tech (among many other offers). Georgia is now up to 11 commitments for 2011. It will sign a full boat of at least 25 recruits.

HUGE commitment! Really impressed watching Marshall in the Dome last year. Can’t wait to see him on the hardwood, too!

We were told by CPJ

June 9th, 2010

CPJ of GT told us all that with the hiring of Coach Al Groh and the fact that he “had long time ties to the NFL” when John Unitas and Paul Hornung and Jimmy Brown ran rough shod over that leagu. With Groh, that “GT would recruit big time young men” and young men from Georgia and elsewhere that wanted to go to the NFL and Groh would be the trick. Yeah ……………….right.

Well, um hwere are they????? The one flanker committ to GT has decided to play MLB and he is NOT GOING TO TECH. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

UGA keeps on keeping on. We need one all world running back, one or two more fast, 6′1″ cover corners, and tons and tons of O and D linemen. A few L backers would be swell too.

2010-2012, 2013 will be fun for UGA

Could the Star Jackson situation be the reason Nick made this decision? Are kids starting to see what Saban is doing over in Tuscaloosa? Winning is great and Saban clearly is a “winner”, but these kids have to think about their future. CMR is clearly more honest with the kids and clearly cares more about taking care of the kids he recruits.

I think it’s a great decision for Nick and it’s great for UGA in football and basketball terms.

Congrats to both parties.

To Bill in Atl …. Some kids see the writing on the wall and choose a different path. Some love the University, and some just want to play football. Either way, do not read too much into any 18-20 yr olds decision. Coach Saban is on firm footing with the top prospects. Look at the commitment from the Center from CA…quoted as saying” “I called Coach (Nick) Saban this morning and told him I’m all Alabama,” Luatua told Scout.com in this update. “I want to play for Coach Saban. He’s a winner, tough, hard nosed, preaches toughness and discipline. … I don’t care about depth charts. I’m going to Alabama and the tradition, fan support and the academics were all the determing factor in my decision. I’m going to give everything I got to the University of Alabama and to the state of Alabama.”

It doesn’t matter. Until Richt mans up and starts Sturdivant, Glenn, Burnette, Anderson and Davis, it will be more of the same at UGA. Richt’s problem has been, is, and always will be his offensive line and the personnel decisions related thereto. READ UGA FANS : Florida starts Xavier Nixon, Carl Johnson, Mike Pouncey, Maurice Hurt, and Marcus Gilbert, and will kick your butts again. . You actually have better personnel (see above) and incedibly refuse to play them as a UNIT! It’s crazy but that’s UGA. Your problem has always been and always will be your offensive line. You had two No.1 draft picks in your backfield against us and absolutely no balance, thus 31-o at the half. Sign all the athletes you want just give us the big earthmover from Moultrie. Thanks again for James Carpenter and Chance Warmack We appreciate it. Roll Tide.

Georgia is doing great in keeping the local guys in state to stay and play for the dawgs. The crimson tide is even doing better getting commits from the west coast to the east coast. You can recruit like
that after winning a NC something Georgia does not have a clue to do!! RTR

Roll Tide, just as it would be silly for me to tell Saban who to start, isn’t it presumptuous of you to think Searles and Richt don’t know better than you who to start on the O-Line? And yes, we would have loved to have had Sturdivant and some others protecting Stafford in the 08 game you referenced, but there is such a thing as injuries.

#2 (are you trying to imply anything by that?) Bama Fan, you will have to start going farther away to get top talent as the local kids start to understand how Saban oversigns and has to get rid of kids every year. How many more do you need to cut by August? 5 down and 5 more to go at last count.

Wow, look at the envy spewing from the tidey fans, because the great state of Georgia plays a better brand of football than that of alabamer, and we put out 10 times the athletes. It has to be a very disheartening to have to go to kids from other states and have to BEG and PAY athletes to go there, like tennershe. But you guys are a little more self sufficient than tenersisee. Cunk, you’ll just have to overlook the Bammers. They were in hiding during the first 8 years of the decade with their terrible records. They had forgotten how to act like winners, so it may take them a while to get used to it. On the other hand, maybe they’re just as arrogant as the Gator fans

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!

Good pick up for UGA – hope this kid also focusses on getting an education that will prove useful for his future.

UGA has a good class building and with a successful 2010 campaign on the field – should really carry over to 2011.

Responding to Bill in ATL – 8:58 post.
Is the Macri Pugh and the Da’Rick Rogers situation an indicator of a bad situation at UGA? Star Jackson has transferred because he found himself #3 on the depth chart – and the window of opporunity to PLAY as a college football player is very short. I do not have a problem with this.

The answer of the Macri Pugh and Da’Rick Rogers question I posed is obviously – “NO – NOT IN THE LEAST!” Kids come and go for unique reasons to their our situation. Pugh – like Star Jackson – found himself buried in the depth chart. As most immature people do – they blame others instead of taking ownership.

As for Da’Rick – His situation is unique – and he had the right to change his mind at the last second – even though those things happen and they are hard to stomach. Did’nt UGA lose a TE to Clemson on signing day two years ago? UGA will be just fine with or without Da’Rick. HIs absence only opens an opportunity for a kid that really wants to be at UGA.

Good luck to Nick Marshall – what a great day for him and his mom!

22 NATIONAL TITLES – 13 SEC TITLES!!!

Dawg Fan – 9:55 post – where are all the lineman recruits?

Understand your concern as you have to win the war in the trenches to be successful.

HOwever – look at UGA’s roster and you will see that the needs of the 2011 class are DB, OLB, and WR. UGA is stocked with underclassment OL – and picked up 2 very talented DL in last years class and is talented and young at the DL position.

Also – UGA has a center committed – and will still pick up another 2 or 3 OL – and is alos targeting a couple of DL. IF they do not get the DL players this year they hope to get – they will pick up DL in next years class as the recruits will see the opportunity.

Don’t sweat this – UGA is putting together a very good class and will have some balance.

Stan, you conveniently leave out the fact that Saban MUST have at least 10 people leave or become medically disqualified this offseason or he will be in violation of the sacred 85 number. In that regard Saban must nudge guys out the door. I’m sorry but it’s not even open for debate.

Pugh did in fact leave for the reason you mentioned and I have no problem with him doing it, just as I have no problem with Star Jackson doing it as he is actually 4th (not 3rd) on the depth chart now. But….do you REALLY not understand the difference in their situations? Pugh wasn’t nudged out the door to make room for someone else who had already signed an LOI, someone who had a much better chance of helping Bama win football games in the future.

I realize that you really try hard to be decent and have honest discussions on here for the most part (although any honest person would question your claim about MNCs), but please tell me you know what’s going on. Bama is oversigning every year (taking the total way beyond the 85) and therefore MUST get the required attrition by any means necessary to arrive to 85. Unfortunately sometimes there aren’t enough medical hardships or flunking kids to get the job done. In these cases Saban has to choose some kids to lean on and nudge out the door.

Chip, while ranking recruits is an inexact science, unless I somehow missed his name, Nick Marshall isn’t among 17 high school players from Georgia who are in ESPNU’s top 150. Perhaps it’s because ESPNU is considering him as a QB and colleges are looking at him as a DB.

And please, enough with the “Dream Team” nonsense. It is a recruiting class. If they turn out to be as good as Florida 2006 or Alabama 2008 then talk about it.
