JEFFERSON – The fastest football player in Georgia is going to play for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Mitchell County’s Justin Scott-Wesley made that declaration from the victory stand after defending his Class AA 200-meter championship here at the state track meet. He did it by donning a UGA cap and holding up a black Georgia sweatshirt as his win was announced to the Jefferson Stadium crowd. His winning time was 21.575.

Scott-Wesley also won the 100-meter dash earlier in the day in a state-record time of 10.35 seconds.

Scott-Wesley was asked what he was happier about Saturday, his state track titles or locking up a football scholarship to UGA.

“I’ve got to say both,” he said. “Last year was my first year running track . . . so I’m pretty proud of both. Anything I get involved in, I’m going to listen to the coaches and give my all.”

Scott-Wesley

Scott-Wesley

Scott-Wesley (6-1, 190) said he will play wide receiver and be an “offensive utility player” for the Bulldogs. He chose Georgia over Louisville, which finished a distant second but ahead of South Carolina, Wake Forest and Stanford. Wesley-Scott originally committed to Stanford last December.

“One of the reasons why is I love red and black,” Scott-Wesley said, wearing a red UGA cap and still beaming from his double state titles. “I went to a game when they were playing South Carolina and I saw how the fans were crazy about the Dogs. It’s just a real good atmosphere, more people in the stands than there is in my whole city. You’ve gotta love it. And I love the coaches, Coach Ball, Coach Richt, Coach Bobo and the rest of the staff.”

Scott-Wesley is the ninth commitment for the Bulldogs for the Class of 2011 and the second this weekend. Outside linebacker Sterling Bailey of East Hall committed on Friday night.

Good luck to him during his senior year. Athens is a great place to be a student and a great place to play football.

Ignore my blog name (I am not trashing UGA here……I want UGA to win every game except when they play GT…….I actually pull for UGA while I am watching UGA games with my UGA wife & UGA friends. I am not an UGA hater simply because I attended GT.)

Looks like UGA is bringing in another stellar class of young football players…………the question remains, will the UGA coaching staff develop these young men into better football players or will they simply succeed based on speed, strength and agility?

Talent is not the problem at UGA and Coach Richt is perfect for the program; however, some of the assistant coaches & coordinators are in over their heads. UGA always has superb talent on the roster and usually has 6-8 relatively soft games each & every year; any coach can win 8-9 games per year at UGA. Better coordinators and assistant coaches would result in more wins on the football field. Replacing Martinez was a huge step in the right direction……..we will see how the defense shapes up with new leadership (jury is still deliberating). Some of the remaining coaches should be replaced to elevate UGA to a consistent powerhouse team.

Congrats to the new UGA players!

We are really starting to haul in recruits and the summer hasn’t even gotten here yet. We still have to find a way to hold onto these recruits however. Especially these WRs. When are we going to start recruiting some of these big, mean, O-Linemen? Yes, these WRs are flashy and nice, but when it all boils down to winning and losing a ballgame, it starts in the trenches. I hope we can start recruiting some big linemen to go along with these skill players. I hope Watts Dantzler commits to us ASAP….Looks like it’s gonna be a helluva recruiting season.

GT Grad – good to see you like the dogs, but try a little thought before you type dumb statements. “6-8 relatively soft” games a year is nothing short of stupid. Reexamine the fixed schedule each year and let us all know which are those “soft” teams. You’re going to have to put your beloved jackets in the “soft” category if you hope to hit your number.

GT Grad, wow thanks for a post that is thought out and actually speaking to the topic. You raise some questions and points, that many of us have also stated for years.

I will say, with UGA’s schedule the last couple of years, we didn’t have 6-8 relatively soft games to count on. But, overall, I agree, most years, with the level of talent we have had, 6-8 games are “expected wins.”

The assistant coaching question…. you sound like much of the Bulldog Nation. CMR’s loyalty really set us back a bit. It looks like the D is well on the road to recovery at this point. Coach G really knows D. What remains to be seen is, how does he play in the chess match on Saturdays? My bet is, he’s pretty darn good game day.

On O, your question about assistant coaches is, again, on the money. Bobo has been exposed as predictable much of the time, and overmatched against some opposing DCs. If it’s me at OC, and the HC is now spending over 50% of the time working with the O, I’d try to step up my game!

We appreciate your interest in a quality football program!

Mark, replace “relatively soft games” with “expected wins” and I think you’d agree with GT Grad. I certainly peruse our schedule yearly and have 6 games where I say, that’s a W.

What happened to CPJ recruiting the state of Georgia so hard. Not one top 50 guy yet and not too many interested. Maybe the AJC should come out with the top 150 in the state and we may see some of the tech recruits. All the tech people saying “we are filling our needs” is a joke. Georgia is filling their needs with top in-state guys. CPJ is taking what he can get.

Welcome Justin

RabidDawg….Since 07, UGA has signed 19 Offensive Linemen…and 8 of those were in 2007…so, you are correct. We need to bring in 3 more along with David Andrews(who might be the steal of the year)in this class to replentish what we might lose…Some people forget that the O-line is our bread and butter on the offense…Health is a big issue, Sturdivant, Benedict, Strickland and 2 other guys who haven’t even played at UGA are coming off of serious injuries…not to mention the 2-3 others who are still hurt…the O-line is the most Grueling position on the field…Go Get them Big Purdies, Coach Searels!!!!

Until Richt and Booboo man up and recruit the likes of Marcus Mcneil, Duke robinson, Chris Scott, James Carpenter, Sergio Render, Chance Warmack, Maurice Hurt, Ed christian, and Jujuan James you’ll still be trailing 31-0 at half. Have you seen the kid, AJ hawkins starting at center for Ole miss. from MLK. Come on Bobo Get that S. Ga. out of you!Take a look a Florida’s starting offensive line . Destin Dog, living the hard life huh? UGA got more than one record setter from the State championships. Pole Vaulter Caleb Ebbets from right here in Lee County accepted a track scholly at UGA after vaulting 16′1″ in the regionals. He went on to set a new state record of 15′6″ this weekend. So FSU, now just who was it you said couldn’t recruit South Ga anymore?

Good post by GT Grad. Plus, by my estimation Georgia has the 3rd-most difficult out of conference schedule in the SEC. By the way, I’m not a University of Georgia homer; I’ll go on the record with that.

Dare to compare:

OOC Difficulty Ranking (unofficial, by Delbert D., etc. etc.)
1. LSU
2. Florida
3. Georgia
4. Tennessee
5. SC
6. Alabama
7. Vanderbilt
8. Miss. St.
9. Auburn
10. Kentucky
11. Arkansas
12. Ole Miss

I actually agree with GT Grad. Talent can only get you so far. Coaching is the rest and I hope this new coaching staff can get the Dawgs on the winning track and back to the SEC Championship and hopefully beyond. The 6-8 relatively soft games is questionable. I’d say those are expected wins for UGA with at least two either warmups or practice squads before a big game.

Roll tide, what is it with your posts, they are always the same and never, never make any sense..You have some kind of agenda regarding the kids that we are or are not recruiting..Do you have any sense at all..The dawgs recruit very well and no we will not get them all and may even believe it or not miss on some few…Tell me what program doesn’t let some slip thru for whatever reasons such as need at a certain positions, scholarship limits, etc…Of all the people that post on here i have to say you are the most absurd…You are poor excuse for a Tide fan, if truly that is what you are…The article was about a young man who made a decision to attend a particular school for his own reasons…Get off the dawgs coaching staff…
