New NCAA legislation stops en masse recruiting tactics

Well, that didn’t last long.

The NCAA on Thursday passed legislation to curtail the dog-and-pony show that has become the spring evaluation period. So Auburn must park its Hummer limousine and Georgia coaches will have to go back to evaluating prospects one or two at a time.

The NCAA Division I board of directors approved an amendment to Bylaw 13.5.1 that limits to two the number of assistant coaches that can “evaluate” a prospective student-athlete at any one time, Christopher Radford of the NCAA told the AJC. It also effectively grounds the use of extravagant means — such as shuttling coaches around in limos or helicopters — used to draw attention to coaches’ presence at a school.

Following is the NCAA’s explanation of the new legislation:

Although during an evaluation period no in-person, off-campus recruiting contact may occur with a prospective student-athlete, it has become commonplace for institutions to send numerous coaches to a prospective student-athlete’s educational institution. Oftentimes arriving in limousines and extravagant buses, these multiple coaches are appearing at the high schools of the prospective student-athletes just as much to be seen as to actually conduct an evaluation. Many institutions are unnecessarily expending resources in order to have multiple assistant coaches attend these evaluations as a result of the perceived recruiting benefit. By permitting only two football coaches per institution to visit a prospective student-athlete’s school on any given evaluation day, it would preclude institutions from sending a large number of assistant coaches to a school just for perception purposes.

Georgia, which began its four-week spring evaluation period on Monday, was sending assistant coaches to see elite prospects in groups of seven — the maximum number allowed on the road at any one time by NCAA rules — the first three days of this week. The Bulldogs were responding in kind to the recruiting tactics first employed by Auburn coaches last year with its “Tiger Prowl,” in which multiple coaches traveled from school to school via a white stretch limousine decorated in school regalia.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said the Bulldogs knew the new legislation was coming.

“We knew if we were going to do it in numbers at a certain place, we better do it right now,” Richt told the Athens Banner-Herald before a Bulldog Club gathering in Augusta Thursday night. “But next week was kind of a time for everyone to disperse anyway. So it worked out about how we hoped it would.”

Richt and his staff are serious about reclaiming its recruiting dominance in state, especially with Georgia’s senior class of 2011 being one of the most talented of all time. The Bulldogs sent out a news release on Wednesday proclaiming their intentions of keeping the best of the best at home. Georgia has six commitments so far, all of them hailing from the Peach State.

“By the end of next week, our assistant coaches will have been to more than 350 schools in the state of Georgia,” Richt said. “Our coaches are really pounding the state of Georgia. The focus of our staff is to make sure we recruit the state of Georgia first. As we all know, recruiting is the lifeblood of any program and our state is a hotbed for talent. It’s our job to do everything we can to show these young men the academic and athletic merits of the University of Georgia. I know if we get the best players in our state to come to the University of Georgia, we will win championships.”

………right! See you in JAX for your annual BEAT DOWN! As Spurrier said – I wonder what is happeing with all that talent that Georiga supposedly gets. One thing I know for sure – it does NOT show up in Jacksonville. UGA wouyld be better off in the ACC

Talk about expansion and conference allignment:
- UGA and SC to the ACC
- FSU and TEXAS to the SEC, Aubrn moves to the SEC EAST.

This would make sense for all schools – and help out midlevel UGA and SC to be competitive – besides that – it is more of a geographical fit.

Reality,
Calm down dude–I don’t think Chip has any double-standard. Again, whether Dawg or Jacket, Vol or Gator, Elephant or Tiger, the childish name-calling & insults need to stop. You agree or not?

It shouldn’t be that difficult to express your OPINION, whether in agreement or disagreement with what was written in a blog or what was commented on by another poster without using profanity and without personally attacking another person. Some people struggle with this but I have a feeling that you are mature enough to still contribute to this blog even if you are not a Dawg fan. I for one welcome your opinion as I do all others and I’m fairly certain that Chip welcomes your opinion too.

258DAWG – You got me dude – totally got me.
A few questions:
– how is Quincy Carter and Odell Thruman these days?
– and how is UGA basketball doing? What was UGA’s exciting basketball record this year?
– What was UGA’s conference record?

And speaking of overall football records – we are 39-46-2 against UGA.
However – since the end of WW2 (starting 1945 season) – were are 36-26-1.
So don’t tell me how UGA has dominated Florida except the last – say 20 years.

We had winning records agianst UGA is the 50’s and 60’s.
UGA had winning records in 70’s and 80’s.
Florida has DOMINATED in 90″s and first decade this millennium.
Florida has owned UGA 4 of the last 6 decades.

So again – tell me how Florida’s success against UGA is only recent?

Yes – another BEAT DOWN is on the way.
Urban owns preacher boy Richt.

It is so funny how Gator fans want to bash Richt for being a Preacher Boy but Urban Meyer won’t even suspend drug addicts…we missed our best D-lineman for 2 games for failing a drug test and our #1 TE for six after failing 2…Meyer has sold his soul to the devil and it is coming back to bite him in the ass with his recent turmoil….the only time Meyer discipline’s his Playaz is when they are arrested or caught red-handed on National TV trying to end a player’s career…Half/game…Bah Hah Hah…What a Goon…We are happy about our “Preacher Boy” and would rather have a great guy than a success mongrel who cashes in all moral and ethical values at an attempt at immortality…His record is very impressive and he is one hell of a coach, but he’s coached the wrong way and everyone knows it…

The only thing worse than hearing Florida fans brag about the one sided beatdowns over the last 20 years is Georgia’s own fans bleating on endlessly about the Richt era. I’m sure UGA complained about Auburns recruiting ways last year but got nowhere. So, you fight fire with fire and use it the same way. Leave it to Auburn to try and get an unfair advantage in recruiting.I wondered why Auburn had sure a great recruiting year for 2010, now we know. I’m not blaming them for finding a loophole in the recruiting rules. They probably are rated high for Accounting Majors.Think how much an impression that makes on a young 16 to 18 year old kid. He would be talked about as a GOD at the high school and town until he left for college. I’m glad the NCAA nipped that practice in the bud early before it really got out of hand.( Landing helicopters at a high schools mid field just before a high school game started)! ARE YOU KIDDING? That would be like saying if you come to our school you being put on a pedestal has just started. You can chose any 3 cheerleaders you want just let us know. There’s a way around no monetary payments for recruits. GOOD FOR YOU NCAA.I APPLAUD YOU. Probably haven’t gone far enough.

Thanks to Gator Fan for pointing out the obvious (stats since 1945) I have always cringed when us Dog fans talk about overall records, who cares. What does matter is our program (under CMR) is in a state degression), forget Florida. Recently they have earned the right to talk crap, as we struggle against the likes of TN and KY (who loses to Kentucky, damn). This is a make or break season for us (CMR)and it is going to probably not be great (1st year starter @ QB and then a new d). The only way our program improves is to maintain high expectations and only accept success, and 4 losses this year is not acceptable.

For those that want to censor the board get a grip, let’s whip a$$ on the field and then the Gator Fan’s will go away.

Go Dawgs.

How can we as UGA fans get upset about gator FANS comments when we holla (((30-24))) and (((8 out of 9))) at tech fans on every college football blog. If you don’t agree with his comments just ignore them… but the truth is sometimes hurts. As long as politics (like gator fan go away’s 11:09am post “obamanite”) are left out and the racist undertone comments are left then I believe the blog is fine.

Regression? Where has UGA regressed? Was it not three seasons ago(07) that we we finished 2/3 in the nations and were dunked from the NC games cuz we didn’t win the SEC? Did we not finish with 10 wins in 08 even with all the injuries we had to the D-line, tight ends, O-line, receiver, linebackers and these guys were starters (Rod Battle, Ellerbe,Kris Durham Tripp Chandler and his backup Bruce Figgins, Trinton Sturdivant, Josh Davis). Yea we had a bad season last year, but I believe far to many people are getting caught up with mystique of the Florida and Alabama programs winning NC’s lately and aren’t paying attention to reality. You may say the past does not define a program, but I also believe that one bad season doesn’t either. I guess I really shouldn’t be saying that 8-5 is a bad season. I think saying that it’s not up to UGA standard is more correct. A standard set by CMR! HunkerDown!
