Checking out the prospects at Augusta National this week

I’m headed down to Augusta this week to be part of the AJC’s Masters coverage team. Yeah, yeah, I know, but somebody has to do it!

Golf is a passion of mine, a game I play and very much enjoy covering and have been fortunate to do often for this publication. So I’m happy the folks in charge feel like I can be an asset this week at Augusta National. Besides, with the craziness that’s expected on the corner of Washington and Berckmans roads this week, we need all the help we can get.

You can read what everybody at the AJC is writing and keep up with pretty much everything that is happening with the Masters tournament this week at the All Things Masters blog.

Meanwhile, we realize recruiting is a passion for many as well and we promise to stay on top of it, too. So while I’m chasing Tiger Woods up and down Magnolia Lane, AJC prep writer Michael Carvell will be keeping an eye on the recruiting scene. The actual recruiting blog will be on hiatus for the week (though I’ll try to pop in if I have time and info worthy of yours) but Carvell will cover any breaking recruiting news or substantial happenings and bring it to you in the Prep Zone blog. He always has great stories and information in that space every day so I hope it’s a regular stop for you anyway.

In the meantime, I’ve got an egg-salad sandwich with my name on it at sunrise Monday. First of dozens I’m sure. Fore!

I know he is a long shot, but he is playing well this year. I think Matt Kuchar has a shot, but I also like Steve Stricker to be close to the top of the leaderboard.

Hate golf, came here to read about football, in particular, college football recruiting…………isn’t there a golf blog or something out there somewhere ?…………………….Well, I guess if I must be a good sport, and say something about golf…………I hope to hell someone slices a bullet of a golf ball, and nails Tiger in the crotch……..punk shouldn’t be allowed to play in a tournament called the “Masters”. What has sports come to when we give a rats rear end about what some creep like Tiger Woods does anyway ?…………………Chip, if you like golf thats ok, but please get back soon and give us football fans something to chew on, please ? Regards, RED

chip pass on to Carvel that we don’t need any stories about kiffin, tennesse and especially about turncoats that used Ga taxpayer money for their education and training and then skipped out of state to play (Maya moore ,the rick rogers etc.

Chip,

Can you get a free beer (you know where it is … at the top of the stairs … at the left … should be some Michelob there) and a pimento cheese sandwich for me? Thanks.
Oh, and try the chowder at the clubhouse. Dee-lightful.

why all the hate for tiger woods? probably 90% of hollywood stgars commit aduiltery but do we protest their films? and don,t forget about bill clinton should he go hideout someplace instead of making millions making speeches? they are all wrong for their actions but tiger is no more guilty than the rest of the entertainment crowd. let him play or else let’s send clinton and the hollywod crowd packing along with tiger. did i mention jesse jackson, mlk, and a lot of other so called reverends that committed adultery they have been forgiven or forgotten. can,t get any worse than a pastor commiting sexual sins they know better and more is expected from them.

Did Tiger Woods ever lie under oath like “Slick Willie” Clinton? At least none of Tiger’s ho’s looked as raunchy as Monica even if they were. Leave Tiger alone!

Hey Chip,

I think Mulligan Shankapotamous will win the Masters going away. He will break Tigers record for low round, and with his new popularity, break Tigers record in the “low down”…[emphasis added].

Then Mully will get is drink on, with more of Ga’s finest co-eds and he might allow Tiger to tag along.

With all the FINE females in the Augusta/ N. Ga. area, I cant see that returning for the Masters is good for Tigers rehab.

Paddy, college football is 24/7/365, for dog fans. There’s not enough time in the day to talk about Florida, Florida, Florida. Who’s in jail now? Gators, Gators, Gators. Playing in Jacksonville is not fair! How unlucky can I get, my boss in a Tech graduate! I still hate Spurrier! Tebow Tebow Myer, they don’t own us. This years recruiting class……
So you can see how there’s no time for culture.

Chip is a human being like everybody else on here and therefore he makes mistakes. He’s working hard at his profession which is journalism but folks like you apparently feel the need to tell him what a bad job he’s doing. How bout this, why don’t you tell everybody on here what it is exactly that YOU do for a living and let a whole bunch of strangers w/no knowlege of your particular craft get on here and tell YOU what a hack YOU are?

Sound fair?

Three sports that require your brain to be in a comatose state to watch. NASCAR, soccer and golf and golf is without a doubt the boring-est game on this planet. Kind of fun to play but boring as heck to watch. I’d rather watch grass die than to watch golf. There’s more excitement in a one hour soap opera then there is in a whole golf tournament. At a NASCAR event at least you can get drunk, see a few wrecks and maybe even a catch a fight. Did I mention that you can get drunk. At a soccer match you may see a fight heck you may even see fans get stampeded to death, they probably didn’t feel anything though, probably drunk. But golf! The highlight of any golf tournament is when a spectator get hits with a golf ball. Football, basketball, baseball wrestling (the fake stuff) not the real stuff, boxing, now those are sporting events worth watching. Golf, please. Think I’ll see how the Bo and Hope mess is panning out on Days. Let me know when The Augusta Nationals are over. Wait a minute, forgot it’s baseball season.

Paddy 4/5 9:35am………No disrespect intended at all my friend, just wanted to make a point regarding reporting on golf, on a college football recruiting blog. If you like golf, fine, I’m sure for some, it is every bit as exciting as college football is to me. I guess I am somewhat of a purist when it comes to the game I love, college football. I just can’t imagine that as big as college football is, SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, PAC10………..and all the other conferences, independents, etc. that somewhere out there………….some real interesting story of a High School kid trying to make up his mind where he wants to go to college, or some school out there using a unique technique for evaluating college prospects would be worthy of researching, and then writing about. Me?, I see college football as a year-round, 365 day a year interest. I’m sure I speak for millions who love the game just that much. So, IMHO, if you are going to report on golf, fine, but doso in the general sporting blogs, or golf blogs, not a blog that has a headline that reads ” College Recruiting “……..with a football field as the background. Best Regards to you Paddy, RED

Uncle Tom……….Oh yes and by the way, why on earth do people like you always have to use racial overtones to your posts ?………Uncle Tom, indeed…….it would appear that perhaps it is indeed you that would have some type malitia meeting to go to………As it appears to me, you are somewhat angry that I happen to be a conservative minded person, love America, am digusted by Hollywood, believes Jesse Jackson is an oportunist that profits by keeping his own people in the role of victims, and am pretty much frustrated with people like you that continue pushing this great country of ours towards socialism………….Whatsayyou ?………….Uncle Tom.

RED Dog 77…..Golf can’t compare to college football in my eyes either. For me watching or playing, golf, seems to fill the void between seasons. I would never play golf on a Sat. during the football season. I would rather put a sharp stick in my eye. Late summer practice will be here before you know it.

Go Dawgs and all the other teams I tell my wife are my favorites so she will not get too upset with my channel surfing. I almost blew it last year! She caught me watching Buffalo vs Kent State. She just smiled and left the room!

Paddy…….Buffalo vs Kent State ?………WOW, you’re almost as crazy as I am ! Saturday afternoons and evenings in the fall and early winter belongs to papa……always been that way under my roof always will be…….Where I get in trouble is when Boise State plays somebody like SanDeigo State, kickoff 11:45 eastern time, then somewhere around 1:30am, with the score tied at 47 to 47, the Mrs. walks out of our bedroom with hands on hips, looking at me in the family room as though I’m crazy…….as I look back at her with a “who me crazy” look…….I usually win, but it does take some pretty expensive ” honey-do ” capital to wiggle my way out of it……..Best Regards Paddy, RED

Anyone want to explain to me why the commentary for this blog has turned into an opportunity for some football fans to compare the size of their love for football and make each other feel better? “Wow, yeah, football is just a 24×7x365 thing for me?” “Family, yeah, that’s just a way to fill the void between seasons.” I mean, I’m reading the recruiting blog, so that says something about me already, but there’s got to be a limit somewhere. I think some of these regular posters are “just one toke over the line”

It is none my or your business what Tiger Woods does away from golf. Most males boging on here have been guilty of similar activities. You are not God or judge and jury. Find something else to occupy your tme. However, I suspect Tiger will cringe every time someone yells “Get in the hole”.

Thank goodness for the game of golf. It’s a sport that most can play until they die. You learn a lot from a guy on the golf course. Does he cheat when he puts down his score, how does he act when hitting a bad shot,, etc. It’s about fellowship too. Have not seen too many 80 year old guys playing football lately. Seems even the professional sports guys like to play golf when thier days are over.

Yo, Jay Rome was in Athens on Monday. I would like to hear about what he thought about the trip. There is a story on scout.com aka dawgpost.com about it. You would think one of you writers would actually pick on a huge recruiting story like this. The best player in GA takes a trip to UGA and it’s not even mentioned on here anywhere. Instead we get pieces about some mediocre prospect the Tech signed and something about the Masters. ESPN covers it all too well for me come here for my Masters updates. Get some news about stuff going on locally instead of doing a national reporter’s job.

The only thing disappointing about shooting a 68 yesterday….not shooting a 69! I should have blown a tap in so that in the post round news conferences I could have said

“that 69 felt great today”
“I felt great after that 69, it was just what I needed to get me going”
“It took 69 strokes, but I managed to get my balls in all the holes”
“Most guys aren’t lucky enough to ever shoot a 69….as for me, I’ve had them all around the world”
“The 69 today felt like the best of both worlds…I was able to handle the front 9 AND the back 9 well”
