Tennessee plucks its first commitment out of Peach State

UPDATED THROUGHOUT 3 P.M. . . .

The way Tennessee has been recruiting the state of Georgia the past couple of years, it should come as no surprise that the Vols’ first commitment of the 2011 class came from a Peach State player.

Christian Harris, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker from Etowah High School in Woodstock, committed to new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley over the weekend, his high school coach confirmed. Harris had attended the Vols’ junior day the previous weekend, got an official offer on Friday and committed on Saturday.

“I went to their junior day, they took me around their campus and the whole place is just great,” Harris said. “They’re building a new football complex and it’s going to be awesome. I know if I go to Tennessee I’ve got a chance to win a national championship and that’s what I want to do.”

Recruiting was just beginning to pick up for Harris, whose only other to date was from UCF. He was invited to Auburn’s junior day this weekend and had planned to visit Clemson as well.

“I’m not sure if I’m going to go to those or not,” Harris said. “I might make some visits to other programs. But I like Tennessee and I’m comfortable with my decision.”

Harris said he was introduced to the Vols by Etowah coach Bill Stewart, who is good friends with UT recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach Lance Thompson.

“Actually Coach Thompson reminds me a lot of Coach Stewart, who is a big influence in my life, so I feel good about that,” Harris said.

Harris had about 80 tackles and several sacks playing strongside outside linebacker for Eagles last season, according to Stewart. But they plan to move him inside for his senior season and that’s where he’ll play for the Vols.

“He’s gained 30 pounds since the season,” Stewart said. “He’s gone through a big growth spurt and that’s one of the things they liked about him. He fits that Mike linebacker spot for them and that’s where we’re going to play him, too.”

Why do we have to bash programs on every single article that involves recruiting or an rival school. Be happy for the young man, doesn’t matter who offered or who didn;t. He gets a chance to play big time college football and earn a degree…Everyone doesn’t get that kind of opportuinity…

So that gives him about 322 days to change his mind a few times right?? Who even cares at this point!

And yes, I would have said the same thing if he had committed to UGA.

Herald why would Peyton want to coach college football? He can work in the NFL making 3 times the money and no stress from the crazy SEC inbred fans calling for his head all the time.

dawgster,

I couldn’t agree more with you and i’ve posted the same thing before. These kids are teenagers and it’s a major honor to get a college scholarship. UGA can only take 20-25 kids per year and there are alot of good football players in the state of GA. As a parent myself, i would be ecstatic if my son or daughter got a scholarship to UT even though i’m a diehard UGA fan. People need to look at what the kid has accomplished and congratulate him instead of the same old bashing that we usually hear.

UT had better go get a R back

Over the next two years, UT will see a continued exodus ( for DaRick, that means departure from) from UT. The kids recruited by Blame and that thug Orgeron do not ( I repeat, do not ) fit Dooley’s squeaky clean image. They will feel the steely glare and the heat from the new coaches to put the pellet guns and mysterious rented car keys up for good. This is the way UT fans want it, unless they are just footbal fans. Grads count ………..not so called fans of UT.

UT had better get a running back because the one they had spit town. He felt the icy stares and the heat, as described, so he split town. More of his ilk will follow.

It will be maybe 2,3 or 4 years before UT purges the stench from their facilities; all created by Lame Blame and his band of thugs. This is not good for the SEC.

Looks like Richt needs some selling points to win back these recruits. I wonder if the “Dawgie Hostess” concept could get off the ground? Well, no. That makes the girls sound ugly. The Red and Black Girls? No…sounds racist. Well I guess Richt will just have to keep promising underage keggers on Saturday night and church on Sunday to lure them in.

Thanks Cantondawg, i’ve read alot of your posts and i know you feel this way also..I love the passion that everyone has for their team, but they need to cool it with the comments on these kids and the programs they choose.. I too hope we get the best recruits whenever possible, but as we know the state of georgia is loaded, we will get our share, but we cannot offer every single kid a scholarship evern when they want to come here…Will we miss a few, I;m quite sure we will, but we will get our share…

“It’s my goal to win a national championship, I can accomplish that at UT.”
As an old UGA fan, I wonder if this attitude exists in Athens? All I hear are UGA fans defending why we cannot win a nc, and why a nc is not as important as a head coach with “class”.
UGA coaches and players must eat sleep and breathe the 2010 UNDEFEATED season, a Top 5 finish, and BCS nc game.
We are tired of all the lame excuses. Its time to produce.

You know, like Lewis always said, “I’m bulldawg born and bulldawg bred and when I die I’ll be bulldawg dead.” But I’m not blind and neither are the recruits. UT has great tradition and a beautiful campus. Plus they’ve kicked our butts pretty darn good recently. And while we’re on the subject, I’m not so sure that Coach Dooley won’t do exceptionally well at UT! It might be a little more becoming if some of us had a little more humility and a lot less mouth!

Just another example how CMR is losing the recruiting battle with schools like TENN, ALB, AND FLA.He continue to peek into states outside of GA and not taking care of his own state.GA has some of the top players in the nation and its no reason that he shouldnt have our state under lock and key.EXAMPLE THIS weekend Jabari Hunt DAYS A GA player that his highlight from his 11 grade yr is sick this kid is a absolute stud has one of the highest combine raitings in the nation came to GA this weekend for jr day and all CMR had to say to this kid is keep in touch. Now you watch me when he go to Tenn, FLA,or ALB and one of them offer him then watch GA try to come in the back door when he should have went in the front door. I have meet this kid and his loyalty is one of his strenghts and who ever offers him first will go a long way. I hope CMR realize what he have in this state and close our borders because if he dont it will be 30 more years before we taste another CHAMPIONSHIP.

BIG BEE, Since you obviously don’t keep up with the SEC, UT had three players charged with armed robbery just a few short months ago, 1 charged was dropped becuase the kid snitched on his fellow teammates, and thats what I was referring too. I seriously doubt he will get a degree from UT but I assure you a UGA degree will pay much greater dividends than a degree from UT. Either way, at least he will be a more well rounded person and better football player than he would had he decided to go to Tech! BTW, a fake idea is much less serious than robbing locals at the gas station with a pistol.
