Offers flowing in for Union Grove’s Rivals250 DB Avery Walls

Recruiting is picking up significantly for Union Grove defensive back Avery Walls.

The 5-foot-11, 184-pound junior received his seventh official scholarship offer of the year Wednesday night when he received a letter from LSU. The Tigers join Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Northwestern, East Carolina and Connecticut in the pursuit of Walls’ services. Texas A&M is expected to be next in line and more are sure to come.

Walls attended Alabama’s junior day two weeks ago and plans to go to Florida’s this week.

Curiously, Walls still has not gotten an offer from either of the state schools. His mother said the Bulldogs, who got commitments from two safeties after their Jan. 30 junior day, are probably full at the position. Meanwhile the Jackets signed five defensive backs last week.

But that’s OK. Walls is prepared to go out of state if needed. Texas and Cal are among the teams that have asked him to attend their junior clinics. He’s also been to camps at Oklahoma and Ohio State.

“I said, ‘you’ve got to go where they want you,’” his mom, Yvonne Sebastian, said.

Walls was one of 14 Georgians named to the Rivals250 list for 2011. Here’s the complete list:

  • Sterling Bailey, DE, East Hall
  • Quan Bray, RB, Callaway
  • Shannon Brown, LB, Cook
  • Isaiah Crowell, RB, Carver-Columbus
  • Ray Drew, DE, Thomas County Central
  • Tyler Hunter, DB, Lowndes
  • A.J. Johnson, LB, Gainesville
  • Nick Marshall, QB, Wilcox County
  • Jay Rome, TE, Valdosta
  • Damian Swann, ATH, Grady
  • Stephon Tuitt, DE, Monroe Area
  • James Vaughters, LB, Tucker
  • Avery Walls, DB, Union Grove
  • Gabriel Wright, DT, Carver-Columbus

Iagree with Al… Why hasn’t UGA offered? And I wonder if the 2 Carver guys are off the radar also… you know why…

UGA’s usually slow to offer since it’s not their policy to rescind once it’s been made. Given that and the fact that Jakar Hamilton is a JC transfer, Georgia could still very easily be interested in Avery’s services next year.

UGA better get there head out of their butt and offer this kid. I have seen him play and he can FLY! I bet he has a great senior season. All right Dawgs, let’s not lose another top prospect out of state.

CHIP – Is Jay Rome related to the Stan Rome who played at Valdosta High and later at – Clemson maybe? Do we have any idea on that? If I recall Stan Rome was one of the most recruited players in state history.
My memory is fuzzy on this.

It must be embarrassing to be the poster who got on here and claimed 1st, and then showed he didn’t read the article. UGA hasn’t offered because we just signed a super class of safeties and already have committments for the 2 we want for 2011. We’ve already got what we need at safety and even the kids mom understands it. Read the article next time instead of winning the imaginary race to be first.

collegeballfan, I am pretty certain Jay is Stan’s son. You are correct about Stan’s talents. He was a high school all american in football and basketball in 1973 or 74 and chose to join Crisp County’s Tree Rollins to play roundball for Tate Locke’s Clemson Tigers. I think he would have been an all american football player since he was good enough to go to the KC Chiefs for a couple of years though not playing in college.

A great high school tournament matchup when Valdosta and Crisp met. Valdosta used Stan and his cousin Roger to negate the 7′ Tree Rollins in a Wildcat win.

The QB from Wilcox County has to be a top target….I am thinking our late offer to the WR from that school was 1)Recognizing a diamond in the rough and 2)Having a teammate of Marshall’s in Athens to help recruit him in 2011.

Where is the name Xavier Dickson from Griffin Ga? He is on the best football players in America. DE/TE.
Where is Corey Moore from Griffin that has already committed to UGA. This kid will be playing on Sunday in 3-4 years. Total package football and academics are stellar.

Remember the name Timmy Jernigan. He is ranked #2 right now on Scouts 2011 ranking and is indeed on Rivals watch list, his favorite team growing up was Florida and he says he is leaning that way.

Those safeties are three stars at best, but the Florida’s and Alabama’s of the world would love to take Mr. Walls out of state.

VR Dawg – The WR will not be in Athens during the 2010 football season. He’s heading to Georgia Military College. He was such a low rated guy, in part, because he wasn’t intending to go D1 this recruiting season. With his athletic ability he’s an easy 3star if he was a 2010 recruit.

I do think Nick Marshall will be our QB signee this year.

I find it amusing that readers in this forum think just because a AJC writer does a 3 paragraph blog on a kid that UGA has to have him or they have dropped the ball. He is a junior by the way.

collegeballfan: Yes, sir, Jay Rome is the son of the one and only Stan Rome. Many figure that’s why he’ll end up at Clemson. But Jay has been on record saying that’s not necessarily the case, that he’s open-minded. Great player with good size and nearly-wide receiver speed.

“Curiously, Walls still has not gotten an offer from either of the state schools”

If because in state school are usually last to offer new recruits on the radar. They don’t want to draw unnessary attention to that player from out of state schools, kind of keep their in-state guys off the radar if they can. Happens all the time.

Taco: I agree. I felt like Griffin defensive end Xzavier Dixon (note correct spelling of first name) was a rather notable omission from that list. In fact, there were several others that could have been on there, including WR Chris Conley, OL Watts Dantzler, OL Thomas O’Reilly, WR/DB Justin Scott , QB C.J. Uzomah or several others. But that probably says more about the depth of talent in the state in 2011 than anything else.

Chip, tell the UGA recruiters they better start looking up in N. GA. We have 2 Juniors from Ridgeland high school all North GA (RB/DB Devin Bowman 6-2 185 4.4 and DE Mason Harris 6-4 215) that are being recruited and visited by Clemson, OK. State, Alabama, and GA. Tech but haven’t heard from the Dawgs yet. I know Bowman would love to hear from UGA.
