Georgia adds OL Kenarious Gates to recruiting class

Georgia added their first player since before Christmas on Tuesday as Kenarious Gates, an offensive lineman from Greenville High School, backed out of a commitment from Kentucky in order to accept scholarship offer from the Bulldogs.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound three-star recruit had been committed to the Wildcats since late December.

Gates could not immediately be reached for comment but Greenville High coach Jeremy Williams confirmed the news.

“It’s definitely confirmed,” said Williams, the legendary coach who led Greenville to an undefeated regular season while battling Lou Gehrig’s disease. “That’s where he wanted to go from Day One so he wasn’t going to pass up the chance.”

The Bulldogs would have offered Gates earlier but they were going to sign only one other offensive linemen in this class and extended that offer to David Beasley of Carver-Columbus. Obviously Beasley has told UGA he plans to sign with Clemson on Wednesday.

Gates gives the Bulldogs 18 commitments heading into national signing day. Georgia officially struck cornerback Nickell Robey from its list after he called coach Mark Richt Monday night to say he was decommitting. That number is expected to be reduced one more when Da’Rick Rogers makes official his decision to flip to Tennessee.

Chip, you left out your normal UGA recruiting sign off. You know the one that goes like this…………The Bulldogs are stumbling down the stretch toward with their Class of 2010. Two other players have reneged on commitments to sign elsewhere in the last month — linebackers B.J. Butler of Kissimmee, Fla. — and Deon Rogers of Port St. Lucie, Fla. — and indications on Monday were that Frostproof, Fla., cornerback Nickell Robey may also flip to another school.

I like how you worded the decommit from UK Chip. “backed out” of a commitment from Kentucky in order to accept scholarship offer from the Bulldogs. Why not say UK was “Jilted” by Kenarious Gates?

Good to see someone in Athens that always wanted to be there. It is always good to have another big guy on the OL. UGA has been short on them a few seasons.

He wasn’t even the mutts first choice as an OL recruit… After their better option chose an ACC school they offered Gates.

Congrats to the young man for getting the better offer, but to see this as a win for UGA is a bit… well, much like most pre-season UGA teams… overrated.

Glad to see us get a guy that really wants to be a Dawg. I am not a fan of kids changing their commitment, but if they are going to, let this be an example. It has been no secret that UGA was his first choice all along, and when the offer came, he didn’t drag anything out leaving UK hanging any further. Good luck to all of these kids wherever they go.

Note: I put on another blog that I see the UT Rogers/Nance saga ending badly. Nance’s father is the next Craig James and Coach Dooley will be dealing with the same crap as Mike Leach if Nance isn’t good enough to play. This is the classic example of the ugly side of college football and Rogers and Nance are caught in the middle – I don’t fault either kid for being torn between the agendas of the adults in their lives. It’s a shame that these adults seem to care so little for the actual kids and just what makes themselves fell better.

Go Dawgs!

Chip I think you don’t even realize what you sometimes sub-conciously write. “Georgia added their first player since before Christmas on Tuesday”. You might retort with “I am just stating the facts,” or “I am only reporting the truth,” but that does not necessarly need to be written and you know it.

On another note you state that UGA only got this fella after someone else spurred them again. Had Beasely already verbaled to Clemson? Did you include that in your article? This again did not need to be stated in the article as you are taking away from someone who has just changed commitments to something that could have easily been left out and you know it.

I have followed your articles for a long time. You have plenty of readers and you are up to date which is a great service that this newspaper and it’s readers benefit from. But you have plenty of followers and there is no need for some of the comments. Thanks again for the news.

sign with clemson? – So what you’re saying is that Beasley, even with his standing UGA offer, knew he would never see the field between the hedges, so he chose the tigers, THEN georgia offered an even lower rated OL-man and he will see the field because he decommitted from a much lower rated SEC school and chose the offer to play in Athens?

So UGA’s settling is actually a new recruiting advantage… now I understand!

I’m excited for him, his parents, and our community. This signing will be special not only tomorrow but also for the future of Patriot football. I pray he remains healthy, grounded, and excels on the field but most importantly in the classroom. This kid has the footwork and footspeed of a TE but plays the line. He also plays basketball. With a little development this kid could be really special. Coach Fox now needs to visit Greenville to start working on Class of 2011 basketball prospect, Kentavious Caldwell. Google him! Welcome to the young man. We can crack on each other as UGA fans all we want (and Chip, too), but the bottom line remains that CMR’s unwavering loyalty to a clearly out-of-his-league CWM, followed by the inexplicable dilly-dallying and wishi-washiness in begnning and then concluding the search for a new DC has cost us in recruiting this year – even the recruits picked up on how unstable the situation was/is. Hopefully, CMR and the new defensive staff will get its crap together, start seriously coachin’ ‘em up, and restore some discipline, piss n’ vinegar to the program (if I see any more dancing on the sideline when we are getting it handed to us, I will scream). Maybe next year’s potential recruits will see a sense of urgency and postive direction that will attract them to the program. In the meantime, maybe there will be some surprises tomorrow…but I’m not holding my breath…oh yeah, question…is there really any such thing as a Tech board??? I’m just sayin’…and if so, why???…

One piece of good news for dawg fans. The old claim about how UGA does well at recruiting but falls flat on the field, no longer applies. You now fall flat in recruiting and it is only the upside from there — no more falling flat on the field by UGA because these will be scrappy guys who, if they win, will get big credit for an upset.

Kudos to Nickell for calling Richt so we could use the spot for another recruit, though its a little late to do much with it. Not sure why Nickell was so highly recruited in the first place. At 5 7″, he probably does not have the size to compete effectively in the SEC. For UGA, this spot can probably be best used next year as we go for similar skills but with enough height and bulk to go up against the receivers from Florida, Tenn and Auburn.

Glad to see the Dawgs pick up a kid but the fact it was at another schools expense still bothers me. What hurts all schools is that they have no time to make up the loss with another player. If Robey called Richt I admire him but to wait until 2 days before signing day leaves you no time to recoup. If Da’Rick wants to play with his BFF more power to him. Coach Dooley will do well at UT but he will have to build up the talent level. UGA, UT, KY, SC are all still chasing UF till one of us finally wins on the field. UF is gathering a great class and the talent level is still good so none of us may catch them anytime soon. We will see what happens on the field in 2010. These kids haven’t played a down, haven’t made a play, etc. who knows they may all redshirt cause they aren’t ready for the big time!

I think what Tech and Georgia will both do is save a few scholarships and use them toward kids who will enroll early so that they count toward this year’s number because next year the rule is that the cap on commitments is 28 (I think). If that’s what Richt is doing, he’s smart because next year the recruiting in the state of Georgia is supposed to be crazy good.

Just admit to the obvious dude, stop embarrassing yourself. You and I both know Nance will never touch the field. Knoxdog – Nothing is forcing all of these players to sign tommorow. If someone is still holding out hope for a UGA or UK offer, he can easily delay his signing until Thursday or months from now. We picked up one of UK’s best recruits, and now they can do the same from some other school with a kid who’s been hoping for a UK offer.

I think the only ethics involved in making offers is that when a school makes an offer they should mean it. UGA is among the classiest when it comes to this.

It would be impossible for a school not to recruit committed athletes and still be among the elite schools consistently in bringing in talent. This is the athletes fault. Far too many committ without meaning anything by it, so schools have to continue to recruit them until it’s clear that they have truly made a decision.

We may have lost a little mojo after the 2009 season. The best we can hope for is a stronger 2010 season and significant improvement on the defensive side to get recruits excited about UGA again. I’m a little disappointed in how this recruiting season has finished up.

We still have a chance for a couple of nice WR’s out there in Boone and the other kid (cannot remember name)who only has FSU as another option. I look forward to this season. Allt he bad talk about our D Coordinator search taking to long will pay off in the end. A.J., Wooten, Orson Charle, Aaron White, Tavarres King etc are gonna step up big time and not to mention Kris Durham will be back. I believe we will be just fine. As far as the 5′7 Robey leaving, I could care less. I dont care how much speed he has. If we were losing a ton of D recruits I would be worried. OK UT fans I have a question. Who is your coach? Notice the pause because you can’t keep up with it. That is not a stable situation. Lane Kiffin was a joke. In terms of recruiting, it is sad to see Da’rick Rogers getting played by the Nance family so that their kid will get a scholarship from UT. If the Nance kid was not close to Rogers, would UT offer him? No. His father is manipulating the situation for his kid. i have seen his kid play and he will never start at UT. I believe we are dealing with a delusional father that is using another kid. I do not know the Rogers kid, but I did hear that his mother wishes for him to attend UGA. The Nance family alienates his high school coach. This is sad to me because a poor kid is getting played and manipulated. The Nance father seems to have little concern for the true well being of the Rogers kid. Sad situation. I am still amazed at how everyone is saying that we lost B.J. Butler. We pulled the scholarshp. His coach said he was “uncoachable”. That is the kiss of death in sports. The Deon Rogers kid is a good kid and I wish him well. The Robey kid is getting pulled in to the house of craziness called Lane Kiffin. That dude will have USC on probation within two years. Let me see, I predicted that Alabama would win the national title 10 months ago. Many said I was crazy. I predicted that Lane Kiffin would not be at UT for more than two years. All these UT fans tried to convince me that he could walk on water. I told everyone that UGA was going to beat GT in football and basketball. Some things are obvious. JUst one little tidbit for the morons crowing about the DeCommits — Deon Rogers and Nickell Robey Decommitted because the Dawgs new DB coach Lakatos let them know they did not fit his preferred type of DB and they would have to work and change to find playing time. They were still welcome at UGA but knew that the new D would not fit them, They made the smart move based on thier size and play style. Lakatos prefers large physical DB’s that play up on the line of scrimmage, which fits the new 3/4 Defense. Small DB’s do not fit the mold of the new UGA D.

Da’Rick was a package deal with Nash – plain and simple. He is helping his friend by going to UT. Would prefer he was a Dawg, but you cannot fault friendship and wanting to be together. Just the way it is.

Now we will wait and see what Green, Boone, Thornton, etc decide.

Bottom Line, UGA still has a great class, and thier average stars per player is #5 in the nation, the only reason they fall to 13 or 14 is because other teams like Auburn have 28 middle of the road recruits and the system Rivals and Scout uses awards QUANTITY as much as QUALITY. Looking at the UGA roster overall, this class does not hurt the Dawgs one bit.

The team came together at the end of the season and we are all thankful!!! We are getting a really good recruiting class and recruits we need. CMR is good about getting good players, but good people as well. Spring ball will be very interesting and we all know that too. Many bloggers are from our opposition and like to stir us up, but we know things are on the rise and we recognize fake Georgia bloggers. I am sorry we did not get everyone we wanted and no team does. Mike S – Agree at least 99%

With the DB’s, that sounds true. I’ll take your word for it.

Da’Rick – In addition to that, clearly the situation with Nash’s dad being a legal guardian of some sort had a lot of impact.

Greene, Boone, Thornton, etc. – Exactly we could easily make a lot of ground up tommorrow

Quality vs. Quantity – We’ll field a lot of high quality starters and key backups and I’m 100% confident we’ll be able to find some more guys to round out the depth. We never needed a big class this year to begin with.

Is that supposed to make me feel better? UGA has 5. UF has 11.

Yes it **** well should. I want UGA to be as good as possible. I’m not some 40iq dimwit who can only remember mythical national championships. I enjoy watching every single game and want us to win as many as possible. If Florida’s going to be some unstopable juggernaught so be it. But I’d much rather be 11-1 than 8-5. I won’t even pretend we’ll be 5-7 like UT was in 2008, that simply does not happen for UGA with Richt as coach.

I understand that 18 year old males in your family are not men. Sorry to hear that.

UGA Ranked #5 in Top 100 Recruits by Scout

UGA has more top 100 recruits than almost anyone in the nation.

Ranked #5 in top 100 recruits AGAIN!

Wrong, but if you were right, all that does is show you what a poor coach Richt is. Great talent coming in and 8-5 barely this year——-he just can’t coach these boys.

Sanford Drive————-is right, the sooner you get rid of Richt the better off you would be. Kirby Smart would love to be the HC at UGA.

Scout Ranks UGA #6 in Recruiting Quality

It’s simply unfair to compare 29 places that Auburn has with Georgia’s 17.

But Scout ranks the QUALITY of the 17 recruits as #6, average score of 3.61

And, the number of top 100 recruits has Georgia at #5, which is remarkable when you consinder that we are only talking about 17 spots.

Here’s what I don’t get about your dumb blog. You’ve done a billion worthless stories about nothing. Then, you jump from writing an entry about being completely unsure about what Da’Rick will do then mention in an entry about someone else that that Da’Rick is expected to officially announce his flip to UT. Do you see where a story is missing? You were (1) totally unsure (2) then suggest that flipping is a mere formality for Da’Rick. How did you make that jump? Where are your sources? How do you have a job?

Whats wrong with a three star? I would love to have Kenarious on our roster and was happy to see him commit earlier. You UGA fans have to remember its the overlooked 2-3 stars from Georgia that have given you losses to UK the past 2 out of 4 years. ie Trevard Lindley and Sam Maxwell.

As much as I hope Da’rick signs with the Vols tomorrow, one wide receiver does or does not win championships…QB play and defense wins championships….whichever school he signs with, it is those “diamonds in the rough” that can really make or break you.

Also, I much as I hate to admit, Florida is dominating in recruiting this year…some say the best class ever…just look at the rankings…Florida, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, TN, Georgia…everybody is getting good players…it just depends on which one’s become that next Herschel Walker, Peyton Manning, or Tim Tebow

Actually Georgia is now 15th on Scouts—–try this on for size, the Gators have 25 committs
with an avg star rating of 3.92——you just can’t keep up—–that’s why you lose.

Someone said it earlier best…ITS ABOUT QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. I would have a couple studs on top of the studs we already have and save scholarships for JUCO’s and HS seniors that want to enroll early next year. If Da’Rick is leaving…and I say IF because nobody has posted a link or anything to say for a fact that he is leaving…we are still solid at WR especially if we pick up Boone or Green.

Vol fans you might have a solid class this year, especially if you get Da’Rick, but do not act like your program is in complete disarray after Kiffin left and you had several players kicked off your team for armed robbery. Your program does not look stable in the nations eyes and recently hired a coach who has a losing record but to his credit, has shown he can recruit. Good luck to all seniors signing tomorrow get an education and stay out of trouble.

A lot of wishful thinking going on with this stuff from Georgia’s opponents saying Richt is on the way out. He may have been guilty of being too loyal to some assistants, but has now taken steps to right the ship. Its going to be payback time in 2010 and 2011. The Dawgs are coming for you! Under Richt the dawgs have averaged 10 wins a year for 9 years. That’s very nice but this is a real record, the Gator’s last four recruiting classes are 47-6 or 11.75 wins a year.

Vols in chaos -

1. Lane Biffin jumps on a bus for Los Angeles and tells the Hillbillys to get stuffed. Riots ensue as the jilted Rocky Toppers realize their program isn’t all that and a bag of pork skins.
2. Hmmmmmmmmmmm options, what should we do next… Oh yeah lets ask the coach in waiting at Texas to leave his million dollar job to come and pet our mangy mutt. Will Muschamp as predicted, told you to get stuffed.
3. Time to spit some tobacco and scratch my head. I know lets ask John Gruden to give up his cushy NFL analyst job to coach our rednecks. You guessed it. John Gruden says… Get stuffed Rocky Homo’s.
4. I know lets call our old standby David Cutcliffe… he’ll take us back to the promise land. Unbeknownst to the Vol brain trust… Duke is a football powerhouse. As expected Cutcliffe tells the big orange to get stuffed.
5. Hey I heard there’s this SEC doormat team in Louisianna called La Tech… I think they have a head coach, why don’t we go after him. Dooley… yeah I’ll take your offer, I’m tired of eating mudbugs!

I told you two weeks ago that D. Rogers would not come to UGA. You have the best WR in the nation and nobody outside the Athens city limit knows the name of A.J. Green. He made a huge mistake playing for a mediocre school with a mediocre coach and a mediocre offense. A.J. Green would be a household word if he had signed with the Gators, and he would have a couple of championship rings. All he has at Poodle U. is a log of regrets.

You guys on here are idiots, you all do understand that you are talking about 18 year old kids. The way most of you act is plainly put stupid, the ones that get on here badmouthing kids because they want to go to a particular school have to be the same ones who never played anything in school. Then there are the ones who just get on these blogs to dog out one team or the other, you should all grow upand act like grown men and women, show a little class whether you are a DAWG fan or a VOL, or War Eagle or even a gator fan. These are kids who are just beginning their adult lives so they are going to have a change of heart and there are cases where they get bad advice or a coach just flat out lies to them to get them to do what they want but in the end it doesn’t matter as long as these kids do what is right for them. SO SHOW SOME CLASS IDIOTS
