Georgia ‘a real possibility’ for 5-star WR Christian Green

I spoke to the father of one of Georgia’s main remaining targets, five-star wide receiver Christian Green, as he and his son drove back to Tampa from Tallahassee where they were visiting Florida State this weekend.

A little background on that first. I usually talk to Hiram Green, Christian’s father, because early on in the recruiting process he said he preferred if reporters wouldn’t bombard his son with phone calls and messages because he’s trying to balance this difficult decision with schoolwork and, at the time, trying to help his Tampa Catholic team win a state championship. So I started then talking to Mr. Green pretty regularly and we’ve actually built a pretty good relationship.

With Christian sitting there in the car with him, Mr. Green said they had a very good time on their official visit to FSU and his son was able to get a lot of questions answered. However, Mr. Green said, anyone reporting it as a foregone conclusion that Christian is going to sign with the Seminoles is off base. As of Sunday evening, he said, it was pretty much a toss-up between Georgia and FSU .

“Georgia absolutely is a real possibility for him and we’ve told Mark [Richt] that,” Hiram Green said. “That’s why he hasn’t made a commitment just yet.”

Mr. Green said Christian would likely make his mind up Monday or Tuesday and let the teams know but won’t make his announcement until Wednesday. The family has agreed make the announcement live on ESPNU at 3:30 p.m.

“We’re going to talk about it tonight and tomorrow,” Green said late Sunday afternoon. “We’re going to sit down and discuss everything and pray on it.” There certainly are a lot of things pulling Christian Green toward FSU. His uncle, E.G. Green, played wide receiver there in the 1990s. But at the same time E.G. played there under Richt, who was offensive coordinator.

And Christian’s older brother, Brandon Green, who graduated from Tampa Catholic in 2009, has committed to sign with  Florida A&M, which is also in Tallahassee. Brandon is currently at Hargrave Military in Virginia.

Hiram Green is no stranger to the recruiting process himself. As a 6-foot-8 power forward, Hiram Green was recruited himself coming out of his school and could have gone to a number of ACC or SEC schools. But thinking he could help establish the program there, he signed with the University of South Florida. Twenty-something years later he works in the schools communications department.

“At this point I think we’re all ready to have it over with,” Mr. Green said with a tired laugh.

td……Both Green and Rogers is a distinct possibility, dont think for a moment these two, and thier families have not spoken. The upside for both is one more year for AJ and he is gone, that means after a freshman season[when both would get substancial playing time] both Green and Rogers would pretty much have complete freedom in the other guys D bacfield, with one of the best red shirt Ss in the country chuckin the ball atem……Sounds good to me ‘td’….But whatever happens, we will get our share, that I am sure of. Hell, one year to get a QB adjusted, one year to get the 3-4 polished, we should look pretty stout come 2011………But dont count out 2010…..with our schedule, and some inspired young players, we might be back to shaking down the SEC for the foreseeable future….GO DOGS !!!! Red Dog 77- what do you mean w/ our schedule? The last 2 yrs. is has been brutal, but this yr…no Ok. St., no Arizona St, & no LSU, & aalso no AL like 2 yrs ago. Sure, it’s still not easy, but it’s sefinitely the easiest since 3 yrs. ago. I’m not so sure we may not be good this yr. The only player we lose on offense is the QB. I personally don’t think that Joe Cox was as bad as everybody said, but I’m sure Aaron Murray, or whoever wins the job can do pretty well…especially considering that the O-Line & RBs should be much better. We should start to lose some of our young O-Linemen after this yr. You never know what will happen, but lets just hope we’re good this yr. People need to remember that some QBs come in & are good in their first yr.

What’s going on with Marlon Brown? He was a 5 star recruit and the #2 WR for Scout.com in 2009. He seems to have disappeared.

chuck….From what I understand, Marlon Brown was having a list of problems last year. Nagging injuries that cut into his reps at practice, some drops, and downfield blocking was a problem. I dont think it was anything that another year adjusting to the system and game speed wont cure. He will be ok. My opinion comes from what I read last year and what I saw in the games he played. I do believe it takes some a little longer to adjust to college football.

Marlon is still fine and I’m sure he will have a coming out party this year. UGA is and will be fine at receiver with or without Rogers and Green. But, personally, I would like to see both of them in UGA Red and Black. Getting them both plus both the D-Lineman, Whitaker and Thornton helps to build us up with plenty of depth…..like a championship caliber team!

Congrats to UGA if you get him.

Question though, it seems like UGA is taking a ton of WR’s, or is it that we all have been subjected to this whole Da’Rick thing and it seems that way?

Have UGA’s classes always been heavy on WR’s?

Do you think UGA ought to be getting in some more LB’s at the last minute for the 3-4 instead of another WR?

Just curious, if anyone will comment on those I’d appreciate it.

I come in peace…

Jacket, the majority of our WRs are hypothetical at this point. The only one who will be signing for sure is Bennett. We are very thin at WR and I believe the ideal number for this class is 3. Hopefully we get some combination of Rogers, Green, and Boone.

We have alot of guys in this class who project to play linebacker in the 3-4. Really the one area we havnt addressed in this class is CB.

I’m happy we’re getting quality players for 2010 but I’m still happier with a new DC. The fact that WM won’t be back has me looking forward to 2010 and feeling great about the Dawgs. I think we’ll get after it on defense this year. I think the new blood will energize the entire program. Rogers, Green and Boone are definite possibilities. Star numbers are sure an indication of talent and ability but great coaches make average players great. Poor coaching makes great players average. WM made great players average. I think that is about to change on all fronts. Go Dawgs.

I live in the Tampa area and the St. Pete Times Forum has this article on USF recruiting Nickell Robey – “– Frostproof cornerback Nickell Robey, who visited USF during the week, then Southern Cal this weekend, will choose between USC, USF and West Virginia, his high school coach Brad Metheny said Sunday.” Looks like we may lose another recruit. Has speed but lacks the height that most people prefer in a DB.

Mr. Green apparantly comes from a very good family.

If you watch UGA last year, you know that CMR has no problem playing true freshman a lot of minutes. Can you imagine Green and Green at the receiver spots. Who ever plays on the opposite side of AJ will not see any double teams. Sounds like a great situation for Christian to be a UGA.

Lucky to have a Dad who is so active in your life and can help you through the process. The bonus when coming to UGA is that you will have played in a pro style offense. If you can start in this offense then you will go to the NFL. Something to think about Greene.

I think think Green would be a great addition. There are a lot of backlash about the guy de-committing us recently. That happens when you have coaching changes, the two that have been receiving the most pub is Deon Rogers and Nickell Robley. Rogers was recruited by John Jancek who is now on Louisville’s staff and was for the past two years a father figure in Deon’s life and the other was Willie who on a Monday was in Robley’s house and then was fired on Wednesday. Kind of hard but those things happen and it needed to happen. If we loose out on those guys so be it, there are numerous other guys out there who can fill the voids as well.

Don’t kid yourselves, this kid was a Nole from day one. Sayng all the right things out of respect for Richt but also needing the drama of a “choice”. He played around with UF for awhile too but never intented to go there. But it is very prestigious to be recruited by an SEC program like Florida or UGA and will make his “choice” of FSU look like a victory for the program that he was born into. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just the way it is.

Love to see Christian on the other side of AJ Green, then on the other side of Da’ Rick for 3 years. That’s a lot of 1-on-1 match-ups with a Parade All American on the other side (Green or rogers).

Georgia was #1 in academics in SEC and in the top 25 ranked teams.

Also, if you think of Christian Green’s value and Mark Richt’s, it’s a no brainer. I believe Christian and Mr. Green both value character and Richt is known around the NCAA for being a high character guy.

He is only (now) interested in UGA because he is hearing the chatter that Da’Rick Rogers is serious about Tennessee. The question is: who will commit first? Ambles, Rogers, or Green? Then watch the others grab what they can, with UGA being the leftover scraps, of course.

there is no way to tell which way he is leaning, I can’t believe I am sayin this but I agree with gator nation. he makes a valid point. anyways, need to keep Da’ Rick and hopefully get another receiver on signing day. Was looking at rivals last night and a couple still have us very high on their list. Can’t wait til Wed either. And remember, these rankings on paper arent always right. I would disagree that UGA needs a deep class at WR. UGA has a half dozen WR on scholarship now. And I trust that they are now committed to running the football more and passing less. UGA needs to run 70 plays a game and 50 of those need to be running plays. There are plenty of TE and WR for the passing game and plenty of TE for the running game. And the WR need to block.

Sign a few more OL & RB types.
