AD: Nickell Robey ‘probably not going to sign with Georgia’

UPDATE: 2:30 P.M. TUESDAY: Nickell Robey is on a hastily-arranged official visit to South Florida today. Skip Holtz and his staff were at the school Monday. CT. . . .

Nickell Robey is probably not going to sign with Georgia.

That was the assessment of Frostproof High School athletics director Chuck Loveless, who spoke to the AJC on Robey’s behalf Monday afternoon.

Robey, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound cornerback, is still listed as a Georgia commitment. But he has been looking around at other schools for weeks now. He visited West Virginia this past weekend, will travel to Southern Cal next weekend and has somebody in his ear from South Florida nearly every day.

From where Loveless is sitting, it appears imminent that the dynamic two-way athlete will probably end up elsewhere.

“Georgia’s listing him as a soft commit but I don’t think he’s going to Georgia,” said Loveless, who has helped marshal Robey’s recruitment since coach Brad Metheny resigned at the end of the season. “I’m a close friend of Mark Richt from our Florida State days. But basically [Robey]  liked Coach [Willie] Martinez a lot and wanted to play for him. He told them when all that happened he was not happy with the change. You have to realize, Coach Martinez was sitting in his living room one day and was gone two days later. That’s pretty tough on a kid.”

Loveless said the four-star cornerback has dutifully listened to Georgia’s pleas to wait out the search for a new defensive coordinator and honor his commitment.

{[Assistant coach] Bryan McClendon has been calling a lot,” Loveless said. “They’re still doing a nice job of recruiting him. But in the end I think the Willie Martinez thing is going to be too much to overcome.”

Meanwhile, Robey has shut down all media contact while he figures out what he wants to do.

“He’s not answering phone calls or returning messages right now,” Loveless said. “He had a visit from West Virginia this morning to follow up on his visit up there. Skip Holtz [the new South Florida coach] was here last week and is trying to get him to come down there. He’s planning to visit Southern Cal next week. Monte Kiffin has been very persistent. He’s probably been in here more than is legal. Of course they don’t pay attention to the rules.”

Loveless said there’s a good reason there remains so much fuss over Robey.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize what kind of athlete he is,” Loveless said. “Do you realize three times he has been state runner-up in the long jump? He’s jumped 24-7 (24 feet, 7 inches). His vertical (leap) at the Under Armour combine was 42 inches. I don’t know where people are getting that his 5-7. He’s probably 5-8 1/2 or 9. This is the most explosive athlete I’ve ever seen. And he’s a good football player. Probably better on offense if you want to know the truth.”

So where does Loveless think he’ll end up?

“Southern Cal is a long, long way to go. Too far probably,” Loveless said. “I think West Virginia is probably in there. And Virginia Tech is probably in there, too. That’s a team that has been kind of under the radar but quietly recruiting him all along. He camped down there and likes the coaches and they’ve been very consistent and kind of low-key with him. Honestly, Georgia is probably a poor third right now. His best bet might be South Florida but they’re playing catch-up with Skip Holtz.

“I’d say he’s probably pretty confused right now. I don’t think see him making up his mind until signing day.”

BTW, the kid is not thinking right if he’s not going to work with the secondary coach who put two corners in the NFL last year.

Tell the kid to get over it! He is 5′8, he will get torched in the SEC! You dont commit to the coach, but to the UNiversity! Thats a bunch of bull. Tell him to go to W Virginia! What a JOKE! These kids think they are prima donnas!

Why would he want to go play for Willie when the guy can’t coach?

Chip, Chad Simmons from scout spoke with the kid yesterday after his WVU visit – I wont give out premium info here, but your story doesnt look very accurate.

Someone needs to send you the memo that “covering recruiting” doesnt mean constantly stirring the pot. Can you write a single article that doesnt at least suggest the possibility of commitment switches or the spurning of UGA?

Summary: the kid has NOT cut of the media (just you I guess) and his quotes dont fall in line with the AD at all. That headline is terrible, and makes it appear as if Robey himself said that. Pathetic.

dawgfan13, good points; from what I have heard from down in Central Florida he is a me player and acts like a kid who WVA would be interested in if you catch my drift.

This is what happens when kids do dumb things and pick a school based on who the coach is. The coach will probably be gone. This time Martinez was gone even before he signed. Pick a school you are comfortable with.

Note to Richt: Dump this kid

UGA needs to go ahead and pull this kid’s offer. God bless him but Martinez was bad and getting worse every year since becoming the coordinator. If Robey’s primary interest in UGA was due to Martinez, this kid really is confused. The new DC and the new secondary coach represent a major upgrade. I suspect the kid was a very shaky commitment to begin with and he’s just using the Martinez firing as his way to back out. That’s fine but it comes across like he’s just plain stupid.

It might be better for him to be honest and say that he’s looking at a UGA secondary with a whole bunch of underclassmen at corner (Brandon Smith, Vance Cuff, Sanders Commings, Jordan Love; Brandon Boykin is the only junior and there are no seniors) and he’s rightfully thinking, “Am I going to play this fall at Georgia”? Probably not…but redshirting is often a good thing.

Man, do these recruits milk this stuff for all it’s worth! I know I wouldn’t wait on any recruit if I were in charge of a big program. I like Paul Johnson telling that kid last year if you go on that trip to Auburn after commiting to us the offer is rescinded.

He’s just a kid, but if he choses any school on his list other than USF (because it is closer to home) he is making a mistake. The game experience in the SEC easily trumps any he will get at any of the other schools, especially USC (they will be bowl ineligible). I wish him the best and as always…

Sorry Guy, in all fairness, CWM was an excellent secondary coach under BVG. He just wasn’t cut out to be a DC. I understand the guy respecting CWM as his position coach but what he doesn’t realize is that his chances of success at the college level will be much better under a complete defense (CTG) rather than a defense that is reactionary (CWM) and full of exploitable holes.

Who needs a 5′8 corner that was in love with a horrible DC like Willie Martinez. I can’t believe this guy is going to pass up an oportunity to play in the SEC and sign with West Virginia or South Florida. If his standards are that low then forget him. You commit to play at a school. Not for an unsuccessful coach.

aug dawg: With all due respect, sir, I’m not sure you understand my job. I, too, read Chad Simmons‘ update (in a nutshell it was Nickell Robey saying that the WVA visit was nice but he’s still committed to Georgia and just looking around). Just so you know, I read pretty much everything that is written on Georgia and Georgia Tech. And, when warranted, I tell our readers what recruits are telling Chad and all of the other writers for the paid subscription fans sites. They do a great job, Chad in particular, and I cite them all the time, link them, etc. But whenever possible I prefer to do my own reporting. And in this case my reporting uncovered a different result. Unfortunately, Robey is not taking my calls for whatever reason (or anybody else’s but Chad, according to the AD). But that’s not going to stop me from trying to reach him. And in Monday’s case, Mr. Loveless called me back regarding Robey. What you read here is what he told me, nothing more, nothing less. I have no agendas or ultimatums. It’s simply what this administrator said. I would have treated the report the same way if Mr. Loveless had said, “I think he’s still going to sign with Georgia.” Because it would have been what he said. You see, I didn’t choose Mr. Loveless’s words. I simply reported them. . . .

Now I did change the original headline, thanks to you. I agree it made it sound like Robey was saying he wasn’t going to sign with Georgia and I certainly did not intend to mislead. So thanks for that. But I will continue to report the news regardless of whether it’s considered positive or negative for Georgia or any other school. Thanks for sharing you opinion.

the reason why he wanted to play for willie is, willie told him he was the perfect cornerback for a DB position short and fast, could get starting time right away and Cuz we know willie loves those short corners who are always so fast but find a way to get beat. So now no willie = no playing time, except for special teams. thank GOD we get a new scheme on defense so we can get back to SEC champ days. GO Dawgs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent all afternoon up in Calhoun doing some interviewing and reporting, etc. I’ll have a report up first thing in the morning on all that so be sure to check back then. Really, CWM was a good secondary coach? Well, let’s see. Brian Evans showed little to no improvement in the 2-1/2 years he started. Reshad Jones only wanted to make the highlight hit, couldn’t tackle my mother in the open field. Love Boykin, but CMW had him playing 10-12 yards off the line of scrimmage. Fundamentals went to #$%^ with Willie as DC/secondary coach. Every OC in the SEC knew what to do with Willie’s soft cover two.
Take your 5-7 behind somewhere else, Robey.

F Robey and his AD Loveless. We dont need him. How can a kid not get excited with our new DC and Secondary Coach? What our recruiters need to be telling this kid is….while it may be a tough pill to overcome with Willie being in his living room one day and gone two days later, we will be a championship contender with these new coaches. And with TG having NFL experience will only help Robey attain his ulitmate goal which is to go to the NFL. But you know what???? F him

Fact of the matter is everyone can bad mouth this kid, but we did need him. He is not tall, but can absolutely fly! I saw him play a couple times in high school and he will be a big time player. He is this years Greg Reid. Good corner and excellent kick returner. Sorry to dissapoint, but just the facts.

I wish the kid luck in whatever he chooses and I mean that. I have ZERO idea why he would choose to go to WVU over GA unless it was purely about playing time. I wouldn’t waste too much time on a kid that is this confused over playing at WVU, USF over UGA. You want to have people that are excited about the opportunity you are giving them. If he isn’t that excited, he’ll probably transfer anyway.

The height issue doesn’t burn me too much as Wansley and Jennings were great corners of small stature. Yes, I would prefer my corner to be 6′ and run like a deer, but I don’t think it is the end all be all.
