Florida consensus No. 1, UGA 7, Tech 44.5 in rankings compilation

Recruiting rankings. Take them for what they’re worth. But the most recognized of the national recruiting services have been updating their team rankings a lot recently as we move into the final two weeks before national signing day (Feb. 3).

I’m in a bunch of planning and logistics meetings this afternoon (we’ve got a bunch of great things planned for you guys heading down the stretch). But while we work out the gory details, I figured I’d do a quick compilation of some of the schools of local interest and where they stand in the latest national rankings.

Probably the biggest change you’ll note is Tennessee’s lead-ball drop. The Vols, whose class was ranked 6th and headed toward a Top 5 avaerage ranking, has been dropped as low as No.  26 by Scout.com.

Georgia Tech’s class isn’t getting much national respect. But it never does and last I checked it’s still the defending ACC champion. With an average ranking of 44.5, the Yellow Jackets are rated even lower than usual. But they also are fielding an unusually small class (14 commitments so far) and could move up quickly if they land good players with their remaining three slots. They’re in with some, with athlete Dominique Brown and linebackers Justin Parker and Jeremiah Attaochu on the line.

Georgia is ranked No. 4 by ESPN and 8 and 9 by Rivals and Scout, respectively.  The Bulldogs could easily move up or down depending on if they are able to hang on to five-star wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers (looking at Tennessee) and four-star cornerback Nickell Robey (West Virginia, USC) and land any of the many blue-chips that remain on their board.

Without any further adieu, here’s the compilation:

NATIONAL RECRUITING RANKINGS

Hey TopDawg,

Those top 10 recruiting classes didn’t do you much good on the field the last two years now, did they? What’s your explanation?

How do the ratings by each service take into account the size of the overall class? Or do they?

Just curious as to whether there is an actual rating of the class on the merits (i.e. rating the actual players), or are you automatically going to always have a higher rating (on average) by signing a class of 25 versus a class of 15?

Is average star rating not a better measure? (If you believe in star ratings…which is an entirely different blog entry).

Just curious.

If UGA has consistently had Top 10 recruiting classes this decade isn’t it logical that UGA should have a Top 10 Ranking at the end of each year? Has that actually happened? So, either the recruiting rankings are off, or the coaching of the talent is off, or there is little correlation between the two. Just sayin.

recruiting will not be Johnson’s strong suit..receivers and QB’s bring the high rankings..His offense is not suited to a “feature back” although Dwyer flourished..Big time backs are looking for Pro-style attacks..He’ll have to produce with the athletes that would be moved to different positions at the bigtime programs..Not saying he won’t win, just no more Bay Bays and Dwyers.

I think it’s a little of all three Just Saying. This isn’t a perfect science now is it? Yech probably does more with less if you look at their results. And UGA probably has so much talent that we can’t get everyone on the field, so some don’t mature as much or as fast as we would like. Coaching is probably an issue also, and some of our recruits don’t even make into school, So it’s a lot of things. And yeah, maybe we seem to do less with more at UGA, but the fact remains that we would rather have a TOP 10 recruiting class every year, and if you were honest so would every other school includng the NATS! Go DAWGS!

We have been on average one of the top 10 programs this decade. You don’t average 10 wins a year without being a top 10 program. Even almighty FL, who almost always is ahead of us in the rankings, had a 5 loss season a mere 2 years ago. Did you forget that? What about USC having a 4 loss season this year with their PAC-10 schedule? Oklahoma was about the same as UGA this year.

This is extremely obvious stuff.

HA…That shows you how much Recruiting sites know!!! UGA gets “STUDS” every year, yet they always play second fiddle. Or, in the case of the last few years, 3rd, 4th or 5th fiddle. Recruits will soon learn that UGA is where five stars go to die!!

Smoke Rings,

You might want to check the national standings and rankings at the end of the year, and the national projections for next year to deal with some facts instead of your biased opinion. You will find that UGA is unranked in ALL of the polls, while Tech is at 13 in most of them. So, UGA was completely irrelevant on the national scene this year, even after beating a top 10 Tech team and winning the Weedeater Bowl. And although it is early for next year projections the ones that are out project Tech to be ranked and UGA either ranked or in the bottom 5th of top 25. So, the truth is that no one outside of Athens has much respect for your program on the national scene, including the pundits at all of the major outlets. Those are the facts while your statement is just a jealous opinion. Just sayin.

I was referring to the past two years BTW. UGA has not been a top 10 team in the past two years. And, you’re not actually implying that having a “10 win season” (as you are saying) is synonymous with having a top 10 ranked team (as I’m saying) are you? I know that accountants can twist numbers but that’s a pretty big stretch even for a Dawg fan!

I don’t put too much into ranking high school players but I do like Florida’s class as far as meeting needs and talent. Should have a couple of impact players for 2010 in there. Also had 11 early enrollees, the most ever.

I would rather a website rank recruits without having a pay by team basis. Both Scout and Rivals run on memberships. But the memberships are not for the whole site, but rather on a team by team basis. The websites also spend more time discussing which school a guy is visiting or committed to, rather than how good the guy is.

I would rather a site work on memberships for recruiting on a whole site basis and not have individual team mini-websites embedded inside them. Still post all the highlight videos and actual game footage and focus on rankings the prospects for different systems rather than a one size fits all. Don’t even discuss which prospects are going where.

But Rivals and Scout will take a guy that is a 3 star committed to a small school and move them to a 4 or 5 star player the same day they commit to a Florida. They didn’t get new info or film on the guy to make them change their mind. On the other hand a guy can be a 4 star player and commit to a small school, and get downgraded to a 3 star player for no reason.

Recruiting rankings are 50% derived based on what school the prospect commits too, when it should be 0%. The schools they always favor are the ones with a huge membership base on their site. They are a business and it is just good business to do this. Recent on field success also helps the current schools rankings but it is much less signifigant.

The AJC has Charles Perkins (a GT commit) as the no. 5 player overall and the no. 1 RB in the state. This is good enough to be a 5 star player. Scout and Rivals had him as a 3 star and the 40th or so best RB in the country. Doesn’t make sense.

Tech, you can bash the Dawgs all you want to about recruiting, but the warts on your efforts really showed against us and Iowa. No depth and only a handful of solid Div 1 players. I will give you props for coaching, But you will never get enough top notch athlete’s in there to get to glory land, Coach Groh or not. If you guys were in the SEC, you would be 6-6 every year, just say’n.

I love this time of year…Everyone thinks there team is the best. I have a question since so many people seem to have the answers… I love the ranking system but the true question is which program has put the most players in the NFL… That’s what it’s all about…YES…So if someone has the answer to that question just let me know… I’m a Tech fan and would be curious to know. If Ga has a top 10 class every year and Tech has an Average 50 class then it should not even be close… Unless GA is not coaching up there talent.

Basically, these recruiting sites (Rivals is by far the most legit) give stars to each player. Each player is given a point scale. So then they take the average points for each team and that gives us a ranking. For the GT fan who was complaining that they dropped when they signed a kicker, that is because he was probably unranked. Sign a 4-star kicker (Aka Blair Walsh was a 4-star last year) and you will rise in the rankings. And no, recruiting classes does not necessarily win you national championships. UF should be number one this year. They have won 2 NC’s and have nearly their starting team leaving. It’s a great place for a top recruit to go right now. Oh, and the reason GT’s recruiting has dropped off is because you have NO big time recruiting coordinators like UF and UGA have. The dawgs will win again this year, and your once beloved Paul Johnson will be phased out quickly. GO DAWGS!
