Last Saturday’s loss to Georgia hurt future Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets almost as much as it did the current ones.
Most of Tech’s 12 commitments for the signing class of 2010 were in attendance as the Bulldogs pulled off a 30-24 upset of the then-No. 7-ranked Yellow Jackets.
“I was surprised,” said Denzel McCoy, a defensive line commitment from Northview High. “I was like, wow, when we got down like that at first. But I know last year we were down by even more going into the half. So I figured we were going to come back, which we started to do. But turnovers and penalties can make or break a game and that hurt us. There were some penalties that weren’t called, too. That had an effect also.”
McCoy said he and UGA commitments Garrison Smith and Brandon Burrows have been “getting after each other” via text message before, during and after the game.
One of Tech’s prized commitments is AJC Super 11 selection B.J. Bostic of Jefferson County. He’s a high school quarterback but will play cornerback for the Jackets.
“I wasn’t too happy with Tech’s defense, especially the way they were running right up the gut,” Bostic said. “They weren’t doing anything special, just right up the gut.”
None of the prospects were allowed in Tech’s locker room after the game but they did visit with some of the players in the players’ lounge after the game.
“I talked to a couple of them I know,” McCoy said. “But you could just tell from their expressions they were upset. It was a hard loss, especially for the seniors because they’re not going to get a chance to play Georgia again. A lot of guys are down about it.”
Said Bostic: “Nobody was in the mood to talk. You could see it on everybody’s faces. Everybody was down and out.”
But, Bostic added, so was he. “I feel like my team lost. I feel like I was a part of it. I know it’s going to be motivation for me during offseason workouts.”
At least the Jackets have a possible ACC championship to fall back on.
“I think it’s an honor for us to be in the game,” McCoy said. “We have worked so hard this season and we deserve the shot to be in this game and win it. I can’t wait to hopefully be playing in it next year.”
