Gainesville wide receiver Tai-ler Jones has already had one change of heart in recruiting. Could another one be afoot in the wake of Charlie Weis‘ dismissal at Notre Dame?
Not yet at least.
The AJC Super 11 selection said Tuesday morning he remains committed to the Fighting Irish. However, he may be inclined to take a look around regarding the latest developments in South Bend, Ind.
“It really hasn’t affected my commitment,” said Jones, who was committed to Stanford before switching to Notre Dame back in October. “I was excited about the chance to play with Coach Weis. But now it just opens up a chance to develop a new relationship with the new head coach they hire.”
That said, Jones admitted there is a crack in the door to his recruitment.
“It might push me to take some of my officials,” Jones said.
Georgia made a late play for both Jones and quarterback Blake Sims, who is committed to Alabama. But Jones said he has not heard from the Bulldogs’ coaches since Weis’ dismissal on Monday. The Crimson Tide will likely come after Jones as well. And Tennessee, which already has a commitment from junior linebacker A.J. Johnson, probably won’t be far behind.
Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish will be fighting to keep their prized recruit. Notre Dame wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello — who was designated interim head coach Monday evening — was flying in to visit with Jones after Tuesday’s practice.
In the meantime, Jones and his Class AAA-No. 1-ranked Red Elephants continue to roll in the state playoffs. After this past Friday’s 32-16 win over Cairo in the quarterfinals, Jones has nine catches for 299 yards and three touchdowns during the playoffs. For the season the 6-foot, 180-pound wideout has 65 catches for 1,235 yards and 17 touchdowns along with two rushing touchdowns.
Like they have all year, Jones and Sims have proven an unstoppable offensive combination in the playoffs.
“I definitely think it’s just our experience and playing together and just kind of knowing each other,” Jones said. “And our line is playing great. They’re giving Blake time to find the holes in the defense.”
Gainesville is confident as it heads into the semifinals to face Flowery Branch. The Red Elephants defeated their crosstown rivals 49-17 in the regular-season finale.
“We know it’s not going to be the same team we faced a few weeks ago,” Jones said. “But we feel good about the matchups think we’ll come out victorious.”
Here’s some video highlights of Jones this season:

It was not Charlie Weis that lured Tai-ler to South Bend. It is his family ties. The only way I see him changing his pledge is if the new head coach has a “run first” mentality.

Why go to ND? They stink. They have one of the weakeast schedules and they are still terrible.
I hate that Weiss has been fired, ND and Weiss fit together. They were both very overrated. They were both terrible.

Hmm, I’m not sure a ten lbs. receiver would survive in the SEC. With Notre Dame’s schedule, he’ll probably be fine.

dap01: Why Notre Dame for Jones? Because his father Andre played there and won a national championship under Holtz. Also, he’s an extremely intelligent young man who is putting a premium on his education. That’s why he was at first going to go to Stanford. Notre Dame is also an academic power.

Yeah, why would an intelligent person go anywhere except to Tech where they could learn chemistry in Vietnamese, get shot and robbed in between classes, and whine and cry like babies about how they’ve been beaten by UGA in football 8 out of the last 9 years even though they have better players and coaches than UGA…………………..sheesh!

You can tell that Tech lost to UGA last Saturday night. The Tech peoplelike Jaded Jacket are back to the UGA folks are so dumb routine. Tech people live in dream land concerning the “value” of a GT education. All of the Tech jobs are now in Bangalore, INdia.Give us a break from your delusional rantings.

Jaded Jacket, why would anyone want to play in a tinker toy stadium, in a crime infested area in Atlanta? As far as education, unless you are strong in math, wish to be an engineer working for someone else, and sit in classes with foreign exchange students, teck is not the place for 98% of the population.

I remember Holtz’s prerecorded video piece on the ND-Michigan pregame show. He stated unequivocally the Notre Dame would win the “national championship” and Claussen would win the Heisman. That guy does a poor job at stan-up comedy.

Hey Jaded Jacket,
Tell me now, is um Dwyer or that moron Nesbitt majoring in Pre Med, E.E., or Biology or Finance, Real Estate- Bus Adm ??? or is it the Recreation major that all techers are involved in now over at the Flats. You all got way way from that formery fabulous all engineering curriculum to intice decent footballers to come there. Geeeeeeeeeez, be honest. We all know the story.
Ivan Allen bequeathed tons of $$ to the school for the Liberal Arts programs like Recreation or Children and Family Counseling. Be honest, tell the truth.
Grab you gun as you leave campus tonight …………danger danger there. Be careful with all the muggings going on. Can’t you all afford some off duty cops????

Let’s get all fired up for Georgia State football! I attended that place back in a previous century. Ugh…what a dump it was back then. Dirt parking lots by Grady Hospital.
Georgia State’s tickets for their home games next year ($72 lowest price) are more expensive than Georgia Tech’s cheapest seats ($60). Caveat: student admission not included. The Georgia Dome might be emptier than it is for the high school games played there.
The opening game is against Shorter, and they wrap up the home schedule against Lambuth. Got to admit I’ve never heard of Lambuth. The Panthers travel to Tuscaloosa the next week and play Alabama. Unless the Tide plays all walkons for the last 3 quarters, they may break the record of 222-0.

It’s really pretty easy to check what Tech’s football players are majoring in. Their bio’s are on the Tech web site. Majors are declared for juniors and seniors.
Here’s a sample: Dwyer, Nesbitt, Thomas: Management.
Starting OL: Mgt., Pre-Med, Aerospace Eng., Mgt., and a Freshman.
Backup OL: Soph, Soph, Civil Eng., Civil Eng.
Management majors are required to take calculus.

Seriously Mr. Jones…. I’d put in a call to Coach Harbaugh at Stanford.
You still get a Terrific education paid in full and you get to live in Palo Alto…. much much preferable to South Bend.

Delbert D– B-school kids at UGA also have to take calculus. I have 2 daughters that graduated from the B-school (marketing and econ) and both had to take calculus. Tech people think that Tech is great and UGA a dud. Both schools are ultimately controlled by the Board of Regents. Why would the Board permit one school to be great and the other lousy?

Pretty easy to read through the lines here. He’ll either stay at N.D. or go to Stanford. Everything else is a waste.
Not sure if the Tech people will ever get it. The Academic gap closes a little more every year. The one’s who pay attention know this. The one’s who have nothing else to grasp – always run to that straw that gets a little shorter every year.

UGA and Notre Dame had something in common coming into Saturday’s game. They were both terrible and both were 6-5…
What does he have to gain at UGA, that he can’t get at ND.

Chip Towers – I suppose your remark is meant to mean that a student athlete would not receive an excellent education at either of our two flagship universities. There also seemed to be a hint of sarcasm in your statement. Surely your comment wasn’t meant the way it came across?

Why UGA as opposed to ND – 1. We will average 10 wins a year and ND won’t 2. It’s close to his home 3. We have shown that all WR’s get significant playing time
Why Stanford – 1. Better team than ND2. better location than South Bend
Why ND as opposed to either – 1. his dad played there
I don’t think he sticks with ND. He’s already backed off his commitment before so I fully expect him to do it again. Could very easily be Stanford though that he switches to.

How are you going to compare him to T.O. – T.O. never carried a A average in school. T.O. never received offers from ND, Stanford, Vandy, Wake Forest, Duke or GA TECH – All great academic schools. We’ve heard so much in the paper about this kid’s attitude?? NOT!
Your right – Kid realy sounds like a cancer waiting to happen. Duh!!
The only cancer in the state of GA is UGA’s terrible coaching staff!!
At least our staff will be in tact after our bowl game. How well do you think UGA’s coaches will coach when their looking for jobs???
GOOOO!!! Yellow Jackets!!!!
