Tech-Georgia recruits react to Dogs’ victory

Depending on which side of the rivalry one sits, there has been a lot of horn-tooting and rationalizing going on since the Georgia-Georgia Tech ended Saturday night. That’s only natural after a rivalry game nicknamed “Clean Old Fashioned Hate.” But the perspective is decidedly different for prospects being recruited by both schools.

Tucker linebacker James Vaughters and Kell safety Brian Randolph fall into that category. Both are high school juniors and coveted recruits for the class of 2011 and both have Tech and Georgia atop their lists.

Randolph, who attended Saturday’s game at Bobby Dodd Stadium as an unofficial visitor, insists he is giving the Bulldogs due consideration even though his brother Justin Randolph is a freshman A-back for the Yellow Jackets. Vaughters has been to both Tech and Georgia many times this season but stayed at home and watched the game on television since he had family in town for Thanksgiving.

Unlike the rabid fans that lived and died with every play in the dramatic contest — Georgia held on to win 30-24 –  these guys watched through a decidedly different lens.

“I didn’t root for either team since I have met and gotten to know both coaching staffs and some of the players as well,” said Vaughters, responding to queries via email. “It is a little strange to watch a game when you want to see guys on both sides of the ball do well. For example, I’ve met Rennie Curran, the linebacker at Georgia, on a couple of occasions and I really like the way he plays and carries himself, so I pull for him. At the same time, I know Roddy Jones, the running back at Tech, because we played in the same youth football league in Tucker, so I pull for him too.”

Said Randolph, reached by telephone on Sunday: “It was a tough, physical game and I liked that.” As for his emotions throughout, he said, “I stayed pretty chill.”

Their reactions corroborate what both Georgia coach Mark Richt and Tech coach Paul Johnson theorized last week, that the outcome of the game in a given year is not pivotal for a recruit to make up his mind.

Randolph stated it flatly: “No, it doesn’t really matter that much.”

Vaughters liked what he saw on both sides of the field Saturday night.

“I still consider both Georgia and Georgia Tech to both be great options, although they are very different,” he said. “What I like is that both coaching staffs have great coaches that seem to care about the players and building character, as well as making sure we succeed academically. It also helps that both programs do a great job of getting players . . . ready to play at the next level.”

But neither player is anywhere close to making up his mind, Saturday’s results notwithstanding.

“It’s too early to tell where the best opportunity for me to fit in depth chart-wise will be,” Vaughters said. “That will be a determining factor, as well, when it is time to make a commitment.”

Said Randolph: “I’m just handling school right now.”

Now, back to horn-tooting and rationalizing.

Funny that the Georgia-Georgia Tech game does not mean much to recruits. Boy, look at the recruits that attended the FSU/Florida game. Some things really matter with recruits looking at a top program. Another example of the difference between the Florida and Georgia football programs. Winning matters to the recruits who want to go to Florida!!!!

Hey guys — both programs are good, although GT’s offense (which wouldn’t affect you) is more than a little quirky and does not appeal to the NFL. But UGA’s fan base is much larger, as is its stadium. Google the largest college stadiums and the SEC has about half of the top 15 in the country. Contrast visiting LSU or UT with ACC venues like Wake Forest and Maryland. Different experiences entirely. Go Dawgs!

Georgia is bringing an outstanding class in this year to go with last years’ class. It is exciting to see what the coaches are putting together. We are looking at exciting times. I know all the negative blogging didn’t help Georgia in recruiting, but the Tech win erased all that. I believe most of the negative stuff was from our opposition pretending to be Bulldog fans. Things have a way of working out when good people are in charge. Go Dogs.

Normally I wouldn’t give a hoot about this game (because Dawgs own GT and it is out of conference), but a certain Tech fan from my island annoyed many of us all year, repeating the “ringworthy” score of the 2008 meeting.

As such, I intend to help the Tech Fans a.k.a “nerds” remember the score of the most recent game.

DAWG fans lets try to remember that DAWGNATION “loses with class, wins with class.” We’ve been doing it for long enough that we shouldn’t get too excited about beating Tech (it is Tech after all). I know how we can get caught up in reminding “m” and “saint simons” that we still are “The Program” in the state, but lets remember that this isn’t Florida or Auburn. We should expect to win this game year in and year out. Plus it bugs the heck the heck out of them we don’t make that big of deal about beating them. GO DAWGS!

Think about this guys; Georgia has one of the best recruiting classes in the country every year and always ends up a mediocre team. Georgia tech typically doesn’t get great recruits but has managed two great seasons (despite a poor showing, and a well played game by Georgia last weekend). What does that say about coaching and player development at the two schools? And sure Tech’s offense is “quirky”, but I don’t think any good defensive players are having trouble getting into the NFL (e.g. Derrick Morgan). If anything, with fewer high level recruits, you’ll have more opportunities to prove yourself at Tech. Finally, read the comments from the average UGA fan above. Sure there are a lot of them, but they are the most ignorant, most arrogant, and most obnoxious fanbase in all of college football.

Last year UGA was 10 and 3 and finished #10 in the country… is that a mediocre team? Tech finished 9 and 4 last year and that was a great year. Those are your words… UGA has had 6 10 win seasons out of the last 9 years and 6 top 10 ( with a #2 and #3 finish) finishes and two SEC Championships and 3 BCS bowl wins.. You call that mediocre?

You don’t what you are talking about. And speaking of UGA fans… have you read what St Simmons, M, Yellow fuzz, Stinger, TSJ and those model citizens had to say. Get off your high horse pal. Tech fans are no better there is just fewer of them.

Tech

November 30th, 2009
10:14 am

Johnny,
You’re right. Mediocre was too strong of a word. What I meant was that UGA tends to under achieve and Tech to over achieve given the recruits and money available to them. I haven’t read what St. Simmons, Yellow fuzz, Stinger, TSJ, or others have posted. They sound like jerks based on what I’ve read here, and I assure you they don’t represent the majority of Tech fans. On the other hand, I’m basing my statement about GA fans on what I’ve seen on countless blogs and heard in person many times; look at NorthGaDawg’s response to me.

Which brings me to another point, I think it is funny that UGA fans immediately conclude that a win over tech proves that both the SEC is a superior conference and UGA is a better team than Tech (btw, everyone knows that overall SEC is a stronger conference). I will admit that the Bulldogs were a better team than Tech last year, but Tech won the rivalry game because they were the underdog and wanted it more. They had more to prove and played harder. That’s exactly what happened this year, just the other way around. Why do you have to read so much into it? Georgia showed up with a great gameplan, played clean football, exploited Tech’s weakness, and had a little luck. That doesn’t mean that Georgia is a better team.

GT GRAD

November 30th, 2009
10:22 am

GT is a great choice for a college education and the future of the Football program is very bright.

UGA is VERY VERY close to losing the Defensive Coordinator (Martinez) and possibly many more of the current coaching staff…………if UGA had lost to GT (very close game that could have gone either way), the UGA fan base would be going crazy in an attempt to gid rid of the current coaching staff (especially on the defensive side of the ball)!

For potential recruits (defensive players in particular), GT is a much more stable team with a great chance to be a part of a team on the rise!

Congratulations to UGA on a close victory, but I am bothered by one specific incident. I personally would like to know how the game would have turned out if Nesbit was simply tackled and not twisted in an attempt to take him out of the game. The three series played with Jaybo Shaw at QB really helped UGA and hurt the GT chances for a victory. What would UGA fans have thought (and can you imagine the posted commets) if GT had twisted Matt Stafford they same way early in the first quarter last year resulting in an injured Matt Stafford? The results of both games might have been the same; I am just stating I wish we could have witnessed the game with Nesbit playing the entire game. Anything to win I suppose, but integrity and character should be more important in my personal opnion.

I would think the recruits would want to play in the best conference. In 2009 the the SEC was 5-2 against the ACC teams with the 2 ACC divison champions being defeated by Georgia and South Carolina. These numbers are pretty much the same or better for the SEC every year. MS State and Vandy were the only SEC teams to lose to an ACC team in 2009. Also, the NFL has far more players from the SEC than from the ACC. If the recruits have any desire to go pro, that must be a consideration.

We’ve always had our share or ‘bandwagoneers’ like other teams, and you guys are no different. Now, we’ve beaten Tech 8 of 9. Series Record by Decade:

60s: 6-4 UGA

70s: 7-3 UGA

80s: 7-3 UGA

90s: 7-3 UGA

00s: 8-2 UGA

I was curious to see what Tech’s winning percentages were in those decades. I added them up and I basically considered a tie as a “non-win”.

60s: 61 W / 104 games – 59%

70s: 61 W / 114 games – 54%

80s: 43 W / 111 games – 39%

90s: 66 W / 116 games – 57%

00s: 80 W / 127 games – 63%

That means that in Tech’s most successful decade of football by winning percentage in the past 50 years, they were still 2-8 against UGA.

I spent a lot of time on these blogs throughout this past year proclaiming our greatness and how this is the end of an era(Georgia will allways dominate GT) only to have it thrown right back in my face at the most unexpected time. If there was ever a time to come that we GT fans/alumni could beat our chest and be proud it was this year and we got crushed in a most violent way…

Georgia will allways dominate GT)

Other St Simons, who do you think he is? I honestly can’t think of any big Tech fans here except my buddy’s dad and a couple architects who I have no doubt had nothing to do with this bozo. Must suck being a die-hard Bug in the 2nd reddest locale in the state, but that guy is truly sick.

GT GRAD very good point on nesbitt, but you also have to remember that we didnt have our best player and possibly the best receiver in the ncaa. I wonder how the game would have went with our running game and A.J. Green to throw to.

payscale.com…go where achievement counts, not building self-esteem by imagining sports are more than fun..80% of nfl players are broke 2 years out of the league..i hate losing anything, even by association, but the big bad meanies think their ranting bothers me?there is no body around here higher in my foodchain that can bother me about sports…

just what UGAG needs more 5 star recruits so they can maybe have a chance to beat Kentucky, oh wait this is a football tread I ment Florida, oh and yes also Kentucky, and Tenn, and LSU,,You have to ask yourself do you want to play for a team that is on the way down ( pre-season #1 last year.not even close, and pre-season #13 this year and now one of the most dissapointing teams in college football this year) or play for a team that is on the rise ( 9-4 last year and 10-2 this year and chance for BCS bowl game) mark it down TECH WILL PLAY FOR A BCS CHAMPIONSHIP before UGAG…………..

sad that no pictures before or after the game of Russ. Ajc should have done a story on that alone. Where he came from, the real owners, etc
