Some positives for UGA from Kentucky game
9:27 am November 23, 2009, by Chip Towers
It’s going to be a busy, compressed week, what with the Thanksgiving holiday coming, Georgia Tech and Georgia getting ready to tee off and the quarterfinals of the state high school playoffs upon us.
To get us started for the week I’m just going to give you a quick rundown of what’s out there regarding Tech and Georgia recruiting:
- Believe it or not there were some positives to come out of the Georgia-Kentucky game for the Bulldogs. According to Scout.com’s Chad Simmons, Valdosta tight end Jay Rome came to the game and said “the visit helped Georgia a lot. A whole lot.” The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Rome may be the top tight end in the South next year. He also likes Clemson and Florida.
- Both Scout and Rivals.com wrote stories over the weekend about Georgia being back in it for Washington wide receiver Antonio Goodwin. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Goodwin, who was also in Athens for the Kentucky game, is a four-star receiver in the Class of 2010 and committed to Auburn this past summer. But Goodwin says he has decided to “open back up his recruitment” and told UGASports.com’s Kipp Adams he plans to take official visits now to Georgia, Auburn, North Carolina and Tennessee. “Nothing really happened between me and Auburn, I just felt like I had committed really early and I wanted to check out some different schools,” Goodwin said. Of course, the Bulldogs are still in the hunt for another wideout for 2010.
- Meanwhile, I had a long conversation with Georgia Tech commitment B.J. Bostic of Jefferson County last week and wrote a piece on him last Friday. He never mentioned to me the possibility of flipping to Georgia but, according to GoJackets.com, that’s the big rumor going around after UGA assistants Mike Bobo and Willie Martinez attended Bostic’s playoff game against Thomasville this past Friday. Bostic told Dale McDuffie things could change if “anything weird happens” with Tech coach Paul Johnson (in other words, leaves for Notre Dame). But otherwise Bostic says he’s still committed to Georgia Tech.
Lots more to come today and this week so be sure to check back often.

The only positive to come out of this game is if the whole staff is fired. What a bunch of clowns, including the head bozo himself, Mark Richt.

Remember, its the players that are playing the game. They are the ones messing up. This is the same coaching staff that has led us to some big wins before and will again. You haters didn’t mind when we were winning with the same strategy from these coaches. We have players in the secondary that aren’t as good as advertised. That happens alot with every program. Cox is like a freshman QB. He hadn’t been tested before this season. Programs cycle. You guys would fire coaches every year. How stupid.

Herschel Talker….you are a clown!! Some changes are necessary and if you know so much, put in your resume. CMR will make things right. I’m sure he told Cox to throw the ball to the UK guys. You are an idiot! There will be changes. I hate losing too. It sux that we lost to a team that we are so much better than. It’s the way the whole season has gone. Defense, special teams and strength and conditioning need to be addressed!! Beat Tech!! I really hate that Trade School. It won’t be easy though. We can’t turn the ball over. Dawgs in a tight one..

For once Herschel Talker is right….you have recruited 4 straight top recruiting classes. If poor coaching is not the issue at UGA…than rivals needs to go out of buisness. Bostic is coming to tech…it seems like people are trying to push him towards UGA…but he will be at tech in January.

Johnson to Notre Dame? What is it with GTech coaches always in the mix at ND? From O’Leary to Tenuta to Johnson…
I’m not sure that would be a good choice for Johnson. Notre Dame may finally have relearned offensive football under Weis, even if it doesn’t execute well, and why retransition to option offense that Notre Dame took more than a decade to get away from? They need to learn to stop people on defense, which Johnson hasn’t proven he is a master at yet.
It would be good for UGA if Johnson left though!

Paul Johnson is staying at Georgia Tech and will be there for quite some time. It’s funny how everyone who mocked this offense now thinks it should be played everywhere in the BCS. Notre Dame will probably wind up keeping their coach unless they really want to throw away 10 million dollars in severance, then spend even more than that to hire someone else. Bostic is coming to the Flats. Mark it down!
A story on Paul Johnson’s record in rivalry games is now available for viewing on http://isportsweb.com. The Yellow Jackets are getting ready for the big game against Georgia on Saturday. THWG!

What a headline – program in utter chaos and you’re shoveling this propaganda. Does Chip Towers really exist? I think this stuff is ghost written by the UGA SID.

For all you so called experts calling for the heads of the dawgs coaching staff, you have no clue when it comes to football, all you can do is spit out negative comments as if you think you could do better…No we shouldn’t be happy with the results this year and yes there are some changes probably overdue, but don’t you realize when major changes are made you can set your program back even farther…We have a very good recruiting class lined up and although because of this season and the coaching questions i do feel we may lose some, but our cupbard is not bare, but we do need to retool things….I think one of my biggest disappointments this year is that we did not improve and as a player and coach you should by the 11th game of the season, also we wasted a year on Marlon Brown and should have gotten one or our freshman QB’s ready to play this year, i do blame the coaches for that situation as now we go into next year with an untested QB and i fear that there will be some of the same issues that we saw at QB this year….Lets stay positive and give our HC the benefit of the doubt for at least one more season, You can bet the other programs will be feeling the heads of these recruits with all the negative they can muster, lets not add to it….

Penalties and turnovers led to the Dawgs Loss Saturday night. All the coaches did a heck of a job. Yeah Georgia does have 5 loses this season, and things havent worked out like we all hoped, but we are young and have alot of talent; boatloads more than Tech. I’m not worried too much about the future of Georgia’s program because we know that every dawg has his day. We will be back in the spotlight in no time and continue to dominate Tech like we have for oh so many years. I think Tech sees our talent and so it kinda scares em and so they relish in the fact that they have CPJ as their savior, but you can coach til your blue in the face if the kids on the field dont get the job done likewise you will lose and I think all this bragging they are doing is quite frankly goin to come back and sting em in the A$$ in the end. Dawgster, get real! UGA ALWAYS has a top recruiting class and, of late, has ALWAYS under-achieved. Do you need a history lesson, or can you think back over the results from the past few years? The team has been under-performing, and that’s a direct result of the coaching — or lack thereof — being provided to these young men. Changes are needed … or Dog Nation better get used to mediocre results. Hey, there’s a thought — bring back Chan Gailey to coach at UGA ……

Ga has many young players and will come back stronger than ever. UGA fans should support the the coach that has won 2 SEC titles. Young players go where they can play and this hurt us in several past recruiting classes, especially at DE, QB and running back but we have the talent there with this years recruits to move forward. If we get some offensive & defensive tackles in this class that are ready to play early we will be in the SEC title game in 2 years or less.

I don’t recall if Georgia ever recruited Nesbitt, but if we did, then safety would’ve probably been a good fit for him. He’s not a pro-style passer.

Ask anyone who worked at Greene County High School when Josh Nesbitt was there and they will tell you there were several “character” issues associated with him. I don’t know how heavily Georgia recruited him, but the folks in the admissions office at UGA would never have allowed him to enroll.
He is a great talent; yes, but he would have never enrolled at UGA. If you don’t believe me, ask any objective employee who worked at his high school when he was a student.
Having said that, I’m sure he’ll have a great game against the Dawgs……..

Speaking of defenses, “Since that night against Florida State, the Tar Heels’ defense has been as good as any team in the nation. No exceptions, and you can add Florida or Alabama or Texas to that list. This defense can play with anyone, just as the 1996 and 1997 units at UNC could.” Not my words, but those of a top sports analyst. So prepsters, if you want to play on a good defense (9 of 11 are back next year), come see Butch!

Hilarious. How many arrests have UGA had under Richt? How many players have flunked out of school under Richt? Even Michael Adams embarrassed himself by defending Richt, claiming that it was necessary to compete in the SEC. Yet we are supposed to believe that Georgia Tech has lower character standards. Please.
Georgia’s not recruiting Nesbitt had nothing to do with his not being a dropback QB either. D.J. Shockley wasn’t a dropback QB either, remember? Neither was A.J. Bryant. And neither is Logan Gray.
Look, Georgia produces a lot of great athletes, and UGA can’t offer them all. Why not just say that, instead of making up nonsense excuses and trashing people? Of course, Georgia Tech fans are going to make fun and laugh, but the problem isn’t the kids that UGA didn’t get, it is Mark Richt’s staff being unable to properly utilize the kids that they do.
That said, it is probably time for Georgia Bulldog fans to start deciding that if Richt hasn’t been able to build the FSU or Miami pro-style offenses in all this time (9 years) he isn’t going to get it done. We see that unless Richt has a dominant passing game, his coaching is mediocre. Well, the SEC isn’t the ACC or Big East. In the SEC, you need a Matt Stafford or Peyton Manning to throw the ball like Richt’s offenses did at FSU and Miami, and Georgia is not going to have QBs like that every year. And no, don’t bring up David Greene, because we all know that it was Brian Van Gorder’s defenses, not Greene throwing the football, that won all those games.

It’s so obvious to tell the people on this board who have played football from the ones who haven’t
The one who haven’t played football are the one that come on ranting about firing the coaching staff and making insults and threats. They off no solution to the problem they just think that if they yell loud enough they will get the change they want. Kinda like a child that lays on the floor crying when they don’t get what they want.
For those of us who have played high school and college football and even coached offer insight and solutions to the problem. There are some people on here who are very knowledgeable and offer great solutions. Unfortunately, we are usually drowned out by the crybabies who act like their momma took their favorite blankie from them. Ex (Herschel Talker, Mcdaviddawg, godawgs, and several others)

Geoff Dawg, others: Yes, Georgia recruited Nesbitt, quite hard actually. They recruited him as the proverbial “athlete.” But Nesbitt made it clear he wanted to be under center at the next level. “I want to be a QB in college and it is important to me in making my decision,” weeks before committing to Georgia Tech in December of 2006.

No team in the country would be undefeated averaging 3 turnovers and 100 yards in penalties a game – including, Florida, Bama, or Texas. UGA’s defense played well enough, the last three games, to win – the special teams kickoff coverage is pitiful. Saturday, Kentucky took practically every kick off back over the 40 yard line and 3 times to the 50. Cox takes to long to pass therefore the rush is bound to come sooner or later and that is where the problem is. He doesn’t take a sack when necessary – throws it up fpr grabs. UGA was the dissappointment of the SEC this year but I predict that in ‘11 they will challenge for the SEC championship. They lose 3 good d-tackles but everyone else of significance will be back with help coming in for the defense and at QB.

Blue:
If you think that Nesbitt would have been a top SEC safety, let alone an NFL prospect at the position, you are being strange. What evidence is there that Nesbitt has the speed, quickness, range, or cover skills to be a safety? This may come as a shock to you, but most dual threat QBs are not able to successfully move to other positions. Most of the dual threat QBs who listen to the “you’ll have a better shot at the NFL at WR/RB/TE/LB/DB” nonsense during recruiting go to the end of the bench and are never heard from again.
That’s why GT will never have a problem recruiting great option QBs, because there are a ton of guys like Nesbitt who know that they have no shot at the NFL at any position, and will prefer being a star QB at a great program to being 4th string WR or DB.

Interesting (and hilarious)………you had no reply AT ALL about the character issue with Nesbitt…….you simply took shots at UGA’s program (methinks thou dost protest too much)………without even mentioning the fact that Tech has also had academic issues with players as well as legal issues in the past………and how about one of your former head coaches (O’Leary) falsifiyng his resume’? Please don’t insult our inteligence by pretending that Tech has a clean program…..all I’m saying is Nesbitt would have never made it past the admissions committee……we had a player a few years ago who had “character” issues that Richt wanted….but the admissions committee denied him…..ended up going to Arkansas……

Bulldawg Jim:
And you ignore that Georgia heavily recruited Josh Nesbitt to play safety. So, his “character issues” kept him from being offered as a QB but were fine for his being a safety? QB requires more “character” than safety or something?
And I never claimed that Georgia Tech was a clean program (although if the best you can come up with to say that they aren’t is George O’Leary’s resume, then, well that just makes me giggle). I only stated that Georgia has let in a TON of questionable characters under Richt’s tenure, many of whom continued to make trouble while in Athens, and in many cases Richt didn’t even kick them off the team.
Really, UGA fans need to quit claiming that guys who don’t go to Georgia have all these unknown grade or character issues, because if they did Georgia never would have recruited and offered scholarships to those players, AS THEY DID NESBITT. Georgia offered Nesbitt a scholarship, and Willie Martinez personally recruited and offered him. Nesbitt didn’t go to Georgia because he wanted to play QB, period.
And you are the one “taking shots” by mentioning vague “character issues” with Nesbitt without mentioning what they are or providing any evidence. And you are the one “taking shots” at Georgia Tech by claiming that Tech’s admissions office has lower standards for “character” than Georgia’s does. “Oh, he would have NEVER gotten into UGA because of his poor character, but you see Georgia Tech just let him on in!”
And it isn’t just Nesbitt. Practically every guy that Georgia Tech signs, UGA fans claim “he wasn’t good enough for Georgia”, “he had bad grades” or “he had off the field problems.” Go to that Bostic thread right below this one, you have UGA fans claiming inside information that Bostic wouldn’t get past UGA admissions because of bad grades, and how “UGA now has higher academic standards than Tech does.”
People, give it a rest.

I only have one point to make. Georgia is a decent time. Some of us can agree with that. In sports it’s hard to maintain a successful season every year. We can agree with that. Now the point is that UGA is not an elite team. The don’t compare with the likes of Florida, Alabama, and LSU in the SEC. Where they keep a good recruiting class with great athletes and can dominate football games. Face it UGA is just an average football time that often have good season. So, now you UGA fans wants to cry about a bad season and have the coaches head. This type of season was bound to happen. Just live with it.

Everyone here should show up to a parking lot before the GA – Tech game with name tags on. Cowards on cpu’s.
UGA is to horrilbe for my to trash these days. It is coaching but also the players. THE COX story sucks. Every year there are guys who sit bc they are not talented enough to cut the mustard. The lines are weak, the LBS are to small and lack the killer intensity needed to play SEC football. The RB’s hit the wholes with panties on and have no second gear. DB’s are small and Evans is truly a space filler (horrible breaks on ball and no ball intuition).
All that said, the Dawgs are going through the same growing pains Bama and Florida did. The only difference is that those programs went through different coaches to get out and we will ride the nice train to the grave!

I’m so sick of all you people (you know who you are) bad-mouthing CMR. You are EXACTLY the same ones praising him 5 years ago. You’re all stupid.
Yes, changes HAVE to be made to the staff under HIM and he needs to do some off-season soul searching but that’s it. One bad season (two if you include a disappointent last year) doesn’t quite justify cleaning house. There’s not a coach out there that’s lasted a long time in one place without at least one or two down seasons. He will do what’s necessary after this season and he will turn this thing around. I guarantee it.

Ike do you care to get honest in your “analysis” of what Georgia
is as a football program? You are a classic ecample of how it is
mostly impossible to have a reasonable discussion with a tech fan about
college football. You stated in a previous post that Georgia is
a mediocre team that happens to have a lot of winning seasons. HELLO!
That is not mediocre by any reasonable standards. They have won sec
championships at least with the past decade. Until last year their
winning pecentage was in the stratosphere witn USC who EVERYONE
acknowledges as an elite program. The real truth of Georgia’s
shortcomings have been in beating Florida enough to compete nationally.
A lot of you rivals are amazing in your dishonesty because you ridicule
Georgia fans for high expectations as though we were like a Purdue
or Ole Miss. No disrepect intended to those schools but they have
not consistently had even 9 win seasons the way that Georgia has up until last year’s team. And we as Georgia fans are are
supposed to accept this type of underachieving without complaint
because in your “opinion” we had a down year due to all mediocre
teams??? You are full of it and you know it!!! There are real
critcisms that can be leveled at any school Georgia included but
you make your self small and your argument small when you make
statements that on their very face are absurd. Georgia fans have
a right to be upset with the way this season has unfolded. A bad
record for a year is one thing . To play like a rudderless ship
careening off ice bergs is quite another. Get it together CMR.
We likely will not have a 10 win season next year without an experienced
QB but the quality of play MUST be improved . Finish the drill
by drilling Tech. This is the REAL bowl game.

I give Cox his due, he’s a tough guy and a good dawg but glad to see him GONE. I do fault the coaches in that they just do DUMB stuff. You just DONT throw a back toss sweep to a freshman tailback when your on your own or the opponents 1 yard line. SHEESH I don’t believe for one second that the high amount of penalties are the players fault. These young men need to be COACHED. Repetitive practice.
I think the hard schedule hurts more than helps. Schedule a couple of creme puffs so our offense and defense can execute their plays in a game type situation. Get used to the idea of long successful drives. Why is this so hard to understand?
Also I think the Georgia athlete needs to be taught discipline and respect. Too much shucking and jiving. The offensive line goes 3 and out while giving up a sack and then you see them on the sidelines laughing and dancing without a care in the world. That makes me SICK

When Georgia threw a long pass on the opening play in the Kentucky game I got that uhoh pit in my stomach. Are the turnover’s caused by too many times taking the shot instead of establishing offensive drives to control the game? Does the defense lack takeaways by playing too much read and react instead of smash and attack? Am I living in the seventies or would Rennie Curran be Ben Zambezzlebug reincarnate if the dogs would be let off the chain for the whole game.

Georgia can recruit whoever they want. The coaching sucks and they won’t win or be coached up to the next level.

I’ll bet my last box of RailRoad snuff that the dawgs won’t lose more than 3 games in 2010. In 2011, it is entirely possible that they won’t lose any…(If you choose to bet, it has to be for the old timey snuff, not this new-fangled smokeless junk) payment due by 3012.
