Nation’s top back Marcus Lattimore to visit Georgia

Georgia got the fifth and final official visit from Marcus Lattimore, the No. 1 running back prospect in the country, according to Scout.com.

Lattimore told Scout’s Chad Simmons that he definitely intends to make an official visit to Athens on Jan. 29 (subscription required), the last weekend before national signing day on Feb. 3. He made an unofficial visit to UGA on Sept. 12.

“Georgia mainly got the last visit because I like the coaches down there,” Lattimore told Simmons on Thursday. “I especially like Coach [Mark] Richt and how he treats his players down there. I never really got a chance to hang out with any of the players when I visited there before, so I am going to do that and just check out the campus this time.”

A number of schools had been battling to get the final official visit from Lattimore, who has already had paid trips to Auburn (Oct. 31) and Penn State (Nov. 7). He currently has official visits scheduled for Oregon on Jan. 15 and North Carolina on Jan. 22. South Carolina has long been considered the favorite for the Lattimore, who stars for Byrnes High in Duncan, S.C., but he does not feel the need to take an official there since he has been to the campus so often the last two years.

Lattimore is the rated the No. 1 back in America by Scout.com, No. 2 by Rivals and No. 3 by ESPNU. He started with more than 50 scholarship offers.

Most recently Lattimore gave Penn State rave reviews after his visit this past weekend.

“Ah man, it was a ‘10,’” he told BlueWhiteIllustrated.com. “I could see myself up there, really. It reminded me a lot of Byrnes, the school I’m at now. Just the way they do things. They really don’t care who scores, it’s all about team. They always put academics first, like I do here. Coach [Joe Paterno] is real cool, it’s just a great place.”

Lattimore said he will announce his decision on National Signing Day.

Just how many #1 back are in the country this year? 10-15 or so I am guessing. Well UGA dosen’t have any good back right now so he get to play early for sure.

Kim Z’s package: There are actually three No. 1 backs (that I know of). Michael Dyer (Auburn commit) of Little Rock, Ark., Lache Seastrunk of Temple, Texas, and Lattimore all get at least one No. 1 ranking from Scout, Rivals or ESPNU. Suffice it to say, they’re all good! . . .

Clint: Regarding Kiffin, I haven’t gotten around to it yet but I’ll just say that the UT coaches took some chances on kids with character issues the last year or so. That can blow up in your face sometimes.

Bon, I normally let comments like yours go, but I feel the urge to speak now. You sir, are an idiot. Do some research, South Carolina is second only to Louisiana in terms of players in the NFL per capita (look it up) wit the vast majority coming from the upstate of SC, where Lattimore plays. And I can tell you I played in Lattimore’s conference, and I have seen HS football in Georgia, Texas, and Florida, and none of those places compare to the upstate of South Carolina. The “so called” best team in the country, St. Thomas Aquinas was dominated by Byrnes for four quarters despite a loss due to turnovers. So again, do your research before speaking.

I don’t think you can hold the title of tailback U when you don’t have a run game. This seems like it is almost a throw away. His official visit i) is not during the season and ii) will probably come after he’s already made up his mind NOT to go to uga. It also sounds like PSU has him in the bag.

Players love playing for Richt–he doesn’t berate them like the other guys.

Can’t beat Richt’s character either–untouchable in that area–no competition.

Lots of Georgia players go onto the NFL, one of the best in the country there.

You know you’ll win games with Richt–he’s one of the most winning coaches in the US.

Cool to play in front of 92,000+

We really need a dominant guy that can run the ball. When Richt gets a 100 yard rusher, we are 38-3 in those games.

Come on Lattimore–help Richt get a Championship and win the Heisman.

Thanks for giving Ga the last visit.

Bon,
Lattimore has played against Gwinnett schools each of the last 2 years. Ask the coaches at those schools how good he is? I think that Byrnes scored a lot of points in each game. I am from GA, but have lived in the upstate of SC since ‘95 and Byrnes is the top high school football program that I have seen. It is not even close, so do your homework before you say anything.

This banter between North GA Dawg, Bob and Bon has me thinking that the only way to tell which region of the country plays the best high school ball is to have a series of post season exibition games in which inter regional matchups are determined by a poll of high school beat writers, a poll of the U.S. House of Representatives and a computer ranking system based on evaluations by Rivals, Scouts and ESPNU…oh and lets not forget to factor in fan base…We can call it the HSBS – that stands for High School …..

Reading is fundamental…lol.

I think the comment refers to the fact that Byrnes doesn’t play a high level of competition on a regular basis in South Carolina. There’s no knock against the Byrnes program. Even playing one or two games out of state doesn’t qualify as playing a high level of competition. But he would have looked a little better against Aquinas if he was holding onto the ball a little better. And to the idiot who stated SC plays equal or better ball than GA, FL, and TX….please wake up. Outside of Byrnes, SC has no claim to posting top teams nationally like FL, GA (where I played), and definitely not like TX. I’ll be happy to compare numbers any time. And don’t give me that per capita garbage. Let me condense GA, FL, & TX all down to the same size and population of SC and pool the best players from each state and then come at me about whose athletes are the best.

As a former Upstate resident and graduate of Dorman High (the only school that comes close to being a rival to Byrnes in the Region) I can speak to quality of their program. I’ve watched them dominate the state for the last 6 or 7 years. They travel out of state to play nationaly ranked teams and as Chip said they play them very well. The quality of football and passion of the fans in the upstate of SC every bit as good as the football in GA. The Dorman/Byrnes and Dorman/Spartanburg High games draw 15,000 fans easy and that’s only because they can’t hold any more.
