It’s official. Georgia has offered a scholarship to Union Grove athlete Jordan Akins.

Bulldogs wide receivers coach Tony Ball hand-delivered an offer letter to Akins late this morning at the Henry County high school. Akins, considered a pro prospect in baseball, also will be given the opportunity able to play baseball at Georgia, according to his coach.

“It’s a very big deal,” Union Grove coach Steven Collins said Friday. “I spoke with Coach Ball and he said they believe Jordan is a top-notch player, one of the best in the state. He’s a late-bloomer but I believe this is the first scholarship Georgia has offered since late this summer so that says a lot.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior plays wide receiver, quarterback, defensive back and kick returner for the 8-1 Wolverines. Georgia wants him to play wide receiver. He comes into tonight’s game against M.L. King with 39 catches for 657 yards and nine touchdowns, 18 rushes for 237 yards and five touchdowns.

Akins currently has scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Maryland, UConn, UCF and Western Kentucky. Collins originally said Akins was offered by Georgia Tech, where teammate Anthony Williams is already committed. However, Collins said that offer is actually conditional based on scholarship availability. The Yellow Jackets currently have 12 commitments with only 13 scholarships to offer in 2010. Roanoke Rapids, N.C., defensive end Kareem Martin has a firm offer.

6-3 I like that. Too bad the article fails to mention whether he’s a senior or junior?

Chip, Isn’t it true that GT could offer more scholarships, but CPJ is only recruiting 13 to balance classes?

Simply a dawg – class of 2010!

Congratulations to this young man!! I hope you find success in the classroom and on the field!

If UGA is offering a scholarship to this young man so late – this certainly tell you what their expectations are to land the other WR’s -Christian Green – Chris Dunkley.

That’s OK – Mr Adkins is very athletic, a late bloomer as his coach has said – keeping him off the radar – but will prove to be a very solid player – what ever school he decides to attend. Hope he goes to UGA.

Also – with the team looking so dysfunctional – I think UGA realizes that they have sealed their fate with some of the other BIG TIME recruits – Lattimore, Luc, Fulton, Riggs, Juwann James and Jeff Whitaker.

Their mistake – UGA is going to be just fine. Sometimes you have to go backwards in order to jump forward. The coaching staff WILL adjust to the situation at hand – and with the true talent on the team still underclassment – DAWGS getting ready to go on a run to compete for titles starting in 2011 – unless they surprise everyone in 2010.

Next year should be a pretty good year – but still in a transition. 2011 – we will be in great shape!

For all of you Richt Bashers – hey – I understand the frustration – but the guy has averaged 10 wins a season!

Go Dawgs – and best of luck to Jordan Adkins!

I saw some comments about the kid from Tennessee, Nukeese Richardson, leaving and going back home to florida, can anyone substantiate this, doesn’t really concern me, but there was some heated comments about his recruiting from kiffin previously that stirred some things up…

WTH, at this time, with the number of current commitments, and number of players already on scholarship, there’s only one scholly available for the Jackets, and that one has been designated on the defensive side at this time.

After the season is up, we’ll have a better idea if additional scholarships will open up (for example, we have someone who might leave early for Law School, or if someone can’t continue playing due to injuries, etc.). At that time, the gray-shirts can kick in, and additional scholarships can be extended.

ANOTHER RECEIVER? WE NEED DEFENSIVE BACKS, RUNNING BACKS AND LINEMEN. WE HAVE TONS OF RECEIVERS. THIS IS THE PROBLEM. UGA CANNOT EVALUATE WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE, NOR CAN THEY COACH KIDS UP WHEN THEY GET ON CAMPUS.

He hasn’t sign to play for Georgia yet, the coaches are just trying to offer as many that they can, because they know they will not get everyone. Also, what is his time in the 40 ?

Smart move here is to take the offer from UGA. It is always better to go ahead and take the guaranteed offer than to wait and potentially get the shaft. As long as Martin is on the fence, there will be no firm offer from Tech. Sounds like a good kid. Good luck!!

Whatever happened to Scout.com listing the prospects GPA?? I mean, I used to look at the profiles and my eyes always went there first. It’s all moot if the kid has to spend a year or two at Georgia Military. This doesn’t apply to this kid, just posing a recruiting question.

NotAnotherReceiver

Can the kid play defensive back? Can he play safety? I’m fairly certain he wouldn’t do very well playing either offensive, defensive lineman or linebacker. Why the **** do we need another receiver? Green, Wooten, Brown, Charles, Rodgers etc.. NO quarterback now to get them the ball, nor one with any experience next season. We NEED to have a strong running game to take the pressure off Santa Claus, or whoever is gonna play quarterback, since once again, as this year, we’ll be starting anew. Geez……………

OCDawg,

Respectfully, who will GET them the ball? How many other schools have six SCHOLARSHIP receivers on the roster; none I’ll bet. We don’t run the spread offense with five receivers. We need backs and linemen.

Just a few thoughts for everyone criticizing CMR. Have any of you ever stopped to ask yourself if maybe we are going too go to a spread offense next year? Also this kid can play CB, do some research on him. Alabama was also getting ready to offer him. People I bleed red & black, just have some faith in CMR.

I agreed with Receiver Jaquan.

We have bunches of receivers the last 3 yrs and most of them supposedly 4-5 Stars!?!? are wasted of scholarships. The only worthy is AJ. Where have Marlon Brown been? He was TN top 2 player. Most of these receivers we’ve signed are doing nothing but sit on the bench.

Since our scholarships are limited, we should be looking for line mens with brain and attitudes or D-end.

If Richt doesn’t start playing his best atlhlets. He’ll be gone next year and the next coach will benefits from his mistake. Murray, Ealey, M. Brown, B.Smith, and Rambo needs to start now and get ready for next year.

Why would Richt wait till next year to rebuilt is puzzling me!?!?

Will see him play Saturday against my sons team.I willbe able to get a true evaluation on him then. I’m a bulldog fan , hope he doesn’t have such a good game Saturday , but I have heard that he is a good player. Georgia is not that far off from being back at the top, if u really watched the game against Florida , the dogs never had a problem moving the ball the penaltys just killed all of their momentum. The dogs got to hit the weight room and have more discipline.

Remember folks, the main factor in in how many “stars” a kid has is dependent on which schools are offering. Thus, If Texas, Fla and Ohio St offer he is automatically a 4 or 5. If its Ole Miss and and Clemson, its automatically a 2 or 3.

Our offensive line is young and will be much improved next year. Ealey will take the heat off the receivers because he will be the next great back at UGA also we have Malcome coming in. Our defense will be better because we will have a new DC. Can anyone say Kirby Smart or TCU’s DC. I am hearing Nukeese Richardson may be coming to UGA.

Can someone explain who UGA is as a team? During the Greene, Pollock years they were hard working good guys. Two years ago they were brash, rude winners. This year they are players that need uniform changes to get excited about the UF game. I”m confused.
