Tuberville: Recruiting, coaching not a problem at Georgia

Former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, now a college football analyst for ESPN, said bad fortune has had more to do with Georgia's recent struggles than poor coaching or recruiting. (File photo)

Tommy Tuberville coached and recruited against Georgia for 10 years while at Auburn. He thinks bad luck has had more to do with the Bulldogs’ recent struggle than poor recruiting or coaching.

“A lot of times guys don’t pan out, guys that have four or five stars; that happens to everybody,” said Tuberville, who is a college football analyst for ESPN after resigning from Auburn last year. “And I’m not saying that’s what happened. But I know a lot of times you bring those guys in there that are supposed to be war daddies and they never materialize.”

Tuberville said losing Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and Asher Allen early to the NFL draft had more to do with the Bulldogs getting blown out by Florida last week than anything. Especially when Florida was able to get back Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham for their senior seasons.

“You’ve got to prepare each team three and four years in advance and that takes a lot of luck,” Tuberville said. “Florida got Tebow and Spikes and some other guys to come back; Georgia loses Stafford and Moreno and Allen. A lot of it is luck.

“It’s going to be a transition year for Florida next year. We’ll have to see how they do.”

It is Moreno, he said, that the Bulldogs miss most.

“The one thing about Mark’s teams over the years, he’s always had a great running back. They’ve always been able to run the ball,” Tuberville said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt losing Stafford was obviously big. But I think the biggest loss for them was Knowshon Moreno.

“It’s hard to lose a quarterback and it’s hard to lose a running back to graduation or coming out early. But when you lose them both in the same year, it really puts you in a tough spot. Your quarterback who hasn’t played much doesn’t have the luxury of a running game to keep him out of trouble. And in the passing game, when you have a young running back and you have an experienced quarterback, your quarterback can throw the ball down the field and take the pressure off the running back.”

Tuberville referred to two different times he was on opposite ends of that equation. In 2000, Auburn won the SEC Western Division and had its entire offense coming back. Or so he thought. Then tailback Rudi Johnson, fullback Heath Evans and wide receiver Ronney Daniels all turned pro early. The Tigers went 7-4 in 2001.

Then there was 2004, when Auburn went 13-0.

“I had no idea we’d get [running backs] Ronnie [Brown] AND Carnell [Williams] back,” he said. “That was lucky.”

Meanwhile, Tuberville said Georgia’s defensive coaching and philosophies are not the problem.

“Evaluating Georgia’s team this year – and make sure you tell them I’m not giving advice – the schemes are fine. Willie is fine,” he said. “It’s really not any different than what everybody else is running. I know early in the season turnovers were killing them. You get your back up against the wall, the ‘Steel Curtain’ can’t keep ‘em out of the end zone.

“I think it’s just been a combination of things this year: Can’t control the running game to the quarterback making mistakes to the defense staying out on the field. [Defensive coordinator] Willie [Martinez] has always been a technique coach who taught fundamentals and all that, not real aggressive, you know, forcing the hand of the offense. When you do that the turnovers will get you and mount up on you and sooner or later that bend-but-don’t-break will break.”

Tuberville said Georgia’s recruiting has been more than adequate.

“We always thought if we could get 15 players that could contribute out of the 20 to 25 we’d sign, that’d be a good recruiting class,” he said. “They didn’t have to be great players, just good SEC players. Then you could win a lot of football games. Some years, you’d get 20 or 22 and that’s going to be a group that’s going to turn into something. But you’re always going to make some mistakes.”

Great philosophy there Tub. You didn’t mention what happened last year when Stafford, Moreno and Allen were still playing at Georgia. Or the year before that. Saban coming into near instant success at Alabama kind of turns your idea on it’s head. It’s Bullshat. Richt and his coaches have been the problem for 3 years now. I’ve never called for their firing and won’t start here but it’s time for then to at least look like they are doing something, anything to get the program on track yet, 3 years running now the decline continues.

Yeah kind of lame excuses. In 2004 when Auburn went undefeated, the next year we lost Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams and Carlos Rogers, all first round NFL draft picks. Auburn still went 9-3 the following year. We lost the first game of the year in Brandon Cox’s first start to GT, then lost @ LSU in overtime when we missed 5 field goals. Lost 3rd game to Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl. Point is, lost more talent then UGA did but still managed a solid season.

Alright all you morons enough is enough. Coaching is not the problem. Tubberville is right and we need to see that for what it is. If you really watched the game, saw it from section 233, our defense played well and our offense gave the game away just like three other times this year. Cox had to play this year or we would not get another recruit from Charlotte, ever! The o-line has been beat up and thin because of injury and attrition. All this media and information never went out went CVD was up and down in ‘77,’78,’79! Then the original version of Tebow came to UGA and we won 3 SECs and should have won two national championships. Give it a rest and let these young men play hard for themselves not for you and your office pride.

I’ve long been convinced that UGA has top tier talent and has for all of this decade. Joe Cox is a mediocre SEC caliber QB “talent-wise” and he was #2 on the depth chart behind Stafford as an example. If Cox had the coaching some of these other mediocre QBs have he would look like a superstar. Let’s face it Dawg fans, the wheels have fell completely off of our wagon. We got the recruits, as uncoached and indisciplined as they are, we still got them.

Have you peopple realized yet that the only reason the ‘Coaching Staff unanimously chose Cox to remain QB’ is because they only care about the next 4 games? They don’t care about the future of Georgia football, like looking ahead to next season Here me out on this one. The staff knows that Cox DOES give Georgia the best chance of winning this year (I agree), which gives the assistants the best chance of keeping their jobs for next season. BUT THE BEST thing for UGA football is to look ahead to next season and start Murray NOW. We’re going to suck as bad next season because once again we will have a QB with no experience.

From the 2005 signing class, Owen’s and Weston’s class, 8 recruits either did not get in, had medical issues or were kicked out. This a pattern that needs to be broken. However, there is also a need for some new blood in the coaching ranks. This was a good staff to start the Richt era off (no HC experience) but it is time to bring in some youth.

I agree with Reality Check. We aren’t doing ANYTHING to prepare for next year. This season has sucked already, so why not just start getting ready for next year? That’s the mistake we made last year… we didn’t get any QB or RB ready to start this season, and we see where we are at this point. I say chalk this season up to a suck hole one, put in Murray and some others, and let them have some playing time before next season so we aren’t in the same position in 2010. As far as coaching, I think Mark Bradley had a good point. We could have the same record in Mark Richt’s 9th season as TN will have in Kiffin’s first. Doesn’t that say a lot? Chances are it’s not going to be better, only worse, especially with Martinez and Bobo. I never understood hiring Bobo anyway… he was mediocre as a QB so we hire him as a QB coach? What next, Martrez Milner (aka Brick Hands) as tight end coach?

I say we hire Tubbs 2 years at DC for close to 500 to 750 thousand a year. Let him build his resume until Clemson or Louisville or West Virginia decides to fire their coach….that is unless the Texas A&M job comes open at seasons end. I think he’d be a sure thing there. Tubbs would be a big boost. Every where he’s gone he has been successful. 10-0-1 for Texas A&M as DC, multiple national titles as DC at Miami and taking Auburn to the SEC championship game a few times. He could make an immediate impact….

I understand the perception that the ACC is a weak conference, but Georgia Tech’s strength of schedule rating is not that bad. CBS Sports Line has Tech’s SOS ranking at 30.

By comparison, Alabama’s SOS ranking is 34, Texas’ ranking is 31, and LSU’s is 44.

I don’t know how these rankings are calculated, but that seems to be some evidence against the “Tech plays nobody” argument.

Tuberville has a point about some of the issues this year but the fact is our defense has steadily declined year after year since WM took over. Before saying he was not critical, did everybody miss the statement Tuberville made about WM being a technique coach and not aggressively attacking the offense but rather using the old bend, don’t break scheme (one that Erk Russell employed at Georgia in the 70s and 80s). I suggest buried in that is a criticism. That passive stance was not one Tuberville espoused throughout his career and its certainly not going to work today with the evolution of spread offenses and option type passing schemes, it simply leaves too many holes in a soft zone and too much space for option runs to work. Reactive type defenses take away aggressiveness and make players hesitate when they should be moving to the ball. The fact is that WM’s performance since 2005 has shown that he is unable to adjust and coach up his players. When is the last time anyone saw him pulling his defense together and using the white board to adjust defensive schemes and finding out what his players are actually seeing during a game? The problems with WM are a product of his body of work since taking over the defense (I know I was at the Sugar Bowl against WVA and could not believe what I was seeing). By definition, that means that the teams he has coached have turned over in terms of players 100% and the offenses have not had the problems of this year. By stating the obvious, I by no means want to imply that offensive problems this year have not contributed to the losses (I do think, however, that Tenn. has shown that a stout defense can keep you in games despite offensive miscues), merely that WM has shown over 4 years that he is not up to the job.

I’m sure Willie and the boys (not CMR at this time, but maybe next year if this continues) are thinking about their jobs, if they aren’t they should be. If Murray was the “way to save their jobs” don’t you think they would want him to start? If you and ARDawg could “flip more hamburgers” faster at McD’s, you would not have to worry about your job either. So, you better get better at cooking my burgers and fries! If CMR doesn’t do the right thing at the end of the year, then his butt will be in the hot seat next year if they do not win. You act like these coaches have forgotten how to coach or at least don’t care enough and are fine with losing! These guys are competitors and it doesn’t matter what they are being paid, they want to win! If you don’t think so, I think you are crazy. Also, Jeff Sagarin (the guy who does the computer rankings for USA Today) has Georgia Tech’s SOS ranking at 12. He has Alabama at 36, Texas at 42, and LSU at 39.

Incidentally, Sagarin also has UGA’s schedule ranked as the third tougest in the country.

reasonable: While Tuberville did remark that Martinez coaches “technique” rather than aggression, I didn’t have space to get into the fact that Tuberville also said that is also the philosophy he prefers. In fact, he said he’d rather go against an aggressive defense like Muschamp’s or Saban’s rather than a technique based defense. Tuberville and Martinez are actually cut from the same cloth defensively. They were both grad assistants at Miami in 1986 at the outset of Tuberville’s eight-year run at the U as an assistant. . . . You live in a trailer park, St. Simons? And all this time, I thought…

Doc has a point when you think about the Florida roster and see that Dunlap, Hunter and Jermaine Cunningham all came out of Georgia…ouch. That’s a bummer.

Sounds like Tuberville is vying for the UGA job. Goodbye, Richt!

The Truth,

I hope you are being facetious because that is one of the dumbest posts I have read in a while.

Seems like one coach trying to cover another coach’s overpaid a$$. Towers, too bad you didn’t ask Tub. about Willie’s defensive schemes giving up 21 or more points so frequently in the last couple of years, and with 4 games yet to go this year. Maybe Willie can also get Tub.’s advice on how best to stop Tech’s option game. I think Willie is going to need all the help he can get, and then some.

Hank-
If Kiffin is a punk, what does that make Richt? Better get used to Tennessee whipping the pups on a regular basis. It’s your destiny. UGA has always been a second rate program.

Shug: I changed it to “resigned” because that was technically the settlement they “negotiated.” But it’s mere semantics. They paid him to resign. He wasn’t going to be allowed to come back. Whatever you want to call it.

Had a few breaks? The Dogs should be 2-6. They were more than lucky in their first 7 games.

Tubberville is going to Texas A&M as HEAD Coach, why in the @$# would he want to be the DC for Georgia. What coach in his right mind would want to coach at Georgia? No history, Florida in SECE, rathole town, and a fan base that knows very little about football.

Sly Croom in 2010, maybe Mike Debose.

Dawgs Forever!

It is my guess you were one of the few Heavens Gate Dawgs fans that missed the Hale Bopp. Thats too bad. For what it’s worth, dipstick and you know what I mean, you don’t have the market cornered on being a loyal Dawg fan. Most of us here are, it’s just that all of us don’t lap dog the kool-aid like you do.

I don’t give a fat rats azz what you think these coaches think about winning or how much of a competitor you THINK they are. The proof is in the pudding. Does 4-4 ring a bell to you? These guys are paid to put a winning program together, YEAR IN and YEAR OUT. This isn’t the first bad season for MR. We’ve had others it’s just you freaks wearing rose colored glasses can’t recognize a bad season if it were anally raping you

He is so very right this happen to everyone but its really hitting UGA Bad because they recruit poorly and they are still recruiting badly. They need to stop chasing stars and get out to see some guys. Invest time in recruiting. UGA make some changes this only the beginning.

I was hoping Tuberville might be willing to come in as DC for The Dawgs after we unload Martinez.

But after reading his comments and opinions I’ve changed my mind. He’s blaming the players – just like Richt and the other Dawg coaches.

I am disappointed in the season as well. I just don’t think the sky is falling or our program is doomed. We won 10 games last year and 11 games the year before. The only team that has beat up on the dawgs is Florida, and they are lucky to have a once in a lifetime player that stayed all 4 years. Go Dawgs!

Chip,

I’m not entirely sure how the Touchdown Club of Athens operates, but it seems odd Tubberville would be there. Do they routinely have former/or current coaches speak there from other teams outside of Athens? Sounds very interesting.

these are your words “If we had a few breaks this team could easily be 6-2. All you bandwagon fans can go ahead and jump off.”

What was your point? My point is I only remember one game (LSU) where a more timely break migh have made a difference in a loss but even then nahhh, we play like caca and didn’t deserve to win even if we had gotten a break

Tuberville knows how to beat Florida. Man, he is what Georgia need. With Georgia’s talents compared to Auburn’s, I don’t think Florida can dominate Georgia as it is.
