Storm Johnson landed nicely after LSU reneged on him this summer. The Loganville tailback committed to Miami on Sunday.
It was only fitting that a guy named Storm would end up a Hurricane.
Storm Johnson, a Loganville tailback and one of the top rushers in the state, committed to the University of Miami on Sunday. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior made the decision without ever seeing the Hurricanes’ Coral Gables campus. He’ll do that during an official visit on Dec. 12.
“I just felt like they were the top of my list,” said Johnson, who transferred to Loganville High from Buford over the summer. “I got along well with the coaches. I like my running backs coach and head coach Randy Shannon. Education-wise, it’s a private school and will be a great education. . . . When I go down there that will be just icing on the cake.”
Johnson said he chose Miami over Michigan State and Oregon, in that order. Florida State, Kentucky, Alabama, North Carolina and N.C. State also were recruiting him.
Johnson originally committed to LSU in late June only to have the Tigers rescind the scholarship offer a short time later.
“Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “I’m happy with my choice.”
Johnson will graduate from high school early and enroll at Miami in January. He hopes to earn early playing time for the Hurricanes.
“I love the depth chart,” he said. “They have three people leaving. One of the two coming back will be a senior. Basically they just need tailbacks. So I’m going in there early to try to work my way up into a playing spot.”
Johnson has been one of the top scorers in the state this season. He has recorded 24 touchdowns, including 22 rushing and two on kickoff returns. For the season he has rushed for 1,406 yards on 226 carries. He’s also had five receptions for 102 yards.
This past Friday, Johnson had 106 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns in a 31-28 loss to Rockdale County.

Storm Johnson is now the second Pre-Season All-State player to leave Gerogia for Miami. The first was Tyrone Cornileus, the standout LB from Stephenson HS. This kid can flat-out fly. He committed back in August. The history about these players is that, they played their very first year of football together as five year olds. That team won the Championship that year for Central Dekalb Youth Fooball Association. They continued to play together on numerous tournament and all-stars teams throughout their youth football years. These kids know how to win and have always been successfull on and off the field. Both are honor students with GPAs over 3.0 and are sceduled to graduate early. Miami got a super great deal in securing commitments from these two outstanding student athelets. Georgia and Georgia Tech missed out on these two great ones.

Walker, Texas Ranger:
LSU never actually pulled their offer. Instead, they wanted Johnson to wait until they heard from a couple of 5 star guys that they are recruiting. As LSU already has one 5 star RB, they would be less likely to commit with Johnson coming on board. Even had LSU gotten their RBs, they would have signed Johnson. However, they probably would have tried to sell him on the merits of playing another position (i.e that OLB/safety hybrid position in that John Chavis defense), or they would have gotten him to grayshirt, or they may have even simply had him wait until after signing day when they already had their letters of intent from the 5 star RBs in hand.
But Johnson is smarter than the average bear and so is his father (which is precisely why the Buford contingent and so many of the “fans” on this site hate his guts, and why they also can’t stand Carver-Columbus’ high school coach … they can’t stand players who stand up for themselves and have savvy involved high school coaches or fathers, because they want the programs to be able to grab and throw away whoever they choose). Instead of waiting until February hoping for an LSU spot, or instead of gray-shirting, Johnson is going to a place where his spot is guaranteed. If he is the fraud that Buford people insist, well gee won’t that “private school education” come in just as handy as Cody Getz’ Air Force education. And if Johnson ISN’T a fraud, he will get playing time as a true freshman.
Johnson and his father know how to play the game, and that is precisely why so many people, especially people who aren’t from Buford, hate his guts. They prefer the naive types that are willing to be used and thrown away. And Buford people: would Storm Johnson have an offer from Miami had he sat behind 2 star Cody Getz? Of course not. You guys are trashing a kid and his father for caring about his own future than winning your program a state title, as if you guys don’t have like a dozeon of those already.
Now it is a valid question why Georgia and Georgia Tech didn’t offer the kid. My guess is that it would have harmed their relationship with Buford, who would have worked to impede future athletes from going to either. Seeing how the Buford folks are acting, that is extremely likely. But out of state schools could care less about Buford, who isn’t exactly Concord De La Salle, Mater Dei, Evangel Prep, etc. so there you go.

All these student athletes say the same thing about education, but when its time to read they all look to the opposite side. I doubt that this kid will ever be good since he chose Miami probably because for other reasons that are not important after being denied by LSU. For example, he mentions that because Miami is a private university he will have a great education. Well, I don’t know if he will have a great education, but he’ll certainly have a fun time down there with all the distractions. Besides, who said that a private school guarantees a great education? I go to Miami and its nothing out of the ordinary compared to what my friends say about UF and other flagship universities. I mean, if it wasn’t for scholarships I wouldn’t necessarily be here, but UM was the only to give me scholarship so I’m here. As for football, we all know that the infamous “Thug U” atmosphere surrounds the program and, sometimes, we see flashes of it on the field. Overall, I think its great we’re having a tremendous season and that other players, for whatever reason, are coming to UM.

Oh please. Like Johnson is the first athlete to have an ego or an involved parent. Do the parents of John Elway, Peyton and Eli Manning, Chris Simms and Matt Stafford ring a bell? Or what about Mitch Mustain’s parents? What about the parents of Josh, Abram and John David Booty? Or are quarterbacks different?
Please. Georgia and Georgia Tech people are trashing Johnson in order to justify their program’s not offering him. That is a joke, because there are plenty of players that the state schools pass up. They can’t offer everybody, especially in years when there are limited scholarships. Tech got the RB that they wanted early, and UGA would rather go after out-of-state 5 star RBs since those are the only ones that ever produce for Richt’s staff.
The rest is just bitter Buford people angry that a kid and his father chose trying to get the best educational and athletic opportunity for their son over helping them win yet another state title. They could care less that by backing up a 2 star recruit, Johnson would have been lucky to get an offer from UAB or Troy. So leaving Buford for Loganville paid off big time. Now you have jokers on here claiming that going to MIAMI is somehow a bad thing, as if MIAMI is Indiana or Baylor or something.
Well, like it or not Buford people, Johnson will be starting classes in Miami in 9 weeks. And he got in at the right time. Miami has 22 commits and started pulling offers last week.

Not Disappointed:
No reason to be disappointed. Georgia Tech never offered Storm Johnson. Why? Who knows. But they got the guy they wanted in Charles Perkins, and he’s a good one. He is probably a better fit for the “A-back” role than Johnson anyway, and Johnson doesn’t fit the “B-back” role. They got a couple of other guys from Loganville instead that will help them on both lines. So Tech should be happy, Miami should be happy, and Johnson should be happy. That leaves the bitter Buford people I guess.

Don’t know why some of the people on here are talking smack about the U.
First welcome to Miami Mr.Storm and I am glad you will be the first named storm of the 2010 hurricane season..
The Canes have the most active players in the NFL right now at 53 and they have the record for the most #1 draft picks in a single draft.
Since 1999, the Hurricanes have produced 27 first-round selections, which is more No. 1s than most Division I-A schools have generated in their history.
..enough about the U !
To all you Georgia locals don’t despair if you lose one of your talented players, down in Miami we are used to this as it happens every year..
For example right now look at the rosters of GT,G, and Bama..
GT = 15% are from Florida
Georgia = 13% are from Florida
Bama = 12% are from Florida
You also have to remember we have the best high school football programs in the country, last year it was Northwestern (Jacory Harris school) that was #1 in the country and this year it is St.Thomas that is #1 in the country.
One of my favorite players Lamarcus Joyner is leaving our local school to play outside of South Florida.
LJ is the #1 CB in the country according the new ESPNU standings..
Believe me you will hear his name alot because he is a beast..
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/prospects?&state=null&status=null&toggle=null&season=2010&pos=CB
The Canes have made him many offers, but he wants a change in scenery so you see this is something we are used to every year..
All I can say is thanks for hopefully producing a nice player for us..
I would also like to add that the ACC and SEC are the toughest football divisions in college and the other cream puff divisions benefit from losses..

Send the ball up the middle in O.T. with a player who still can’t figure out what a guard or tackle is and can only run when given 15 yeards to build speed to the outside and then pose like Jesus himself. Stay on the kick return where it’s open. Godfrey’s head straight up Storm backside. Maybe Loganville could call a time out or two (in a row), so they can figure out the next play. What? Other players? When did that happen? Quick, call a time out!! There’s no Teaming in Stormball !!
What have the rest of the actual Loganville boys done with Storm around. Nothing. They suck compared to last year, no heart. No D at all. Wonder why? None needed. All the attention was on Storm and if he would score enough to out do everybody. 26 carries and 106 yards? Ooohhhh! All tingly and warm.
Buford called him a cancer on the team. Wow, right on the money. He should have helped lift the team and not break it down to narrow the spotlight. Actually saw him put his hand up in Godfrey’s face after Storm dropped the ball (again) so he would not have to hear it. Did not want to hear it from his own coach on a dropped ball. Cancer Rules!!!
Lets pray for the cure. One way ticket to Miami. Thank God his parents only rented here for one season. Storm said he went to Loganville to get THEM to the Dome. About as much team playing as a fragging sniper. Saturday, Loganville can start focusing on being a team again. A team for ALL the boys who are actually FROM LOGANVILLE and not transfer queens!!!
Loganville’s Morgan Bailey is D-1 to GT and has NONE of these issues or comments. Only good comments. Why are all the negative issues only around Storm? It is what it is.

Buford is still racist, he didn’t play because they wanted all the white boys to shine. Watch the show, He is League bound. He is the best back Buford ever had, freaking jerks.

You all need to stop and wish this young man well. Buford will get whatever, Coach Simpson won’t be long. All the other parents will see that Jessel Curry will be pumped to be the man for the remaining playoffs, he’s the right color and his parents have put up enough $$$$$ and Chad Simmons will make him to be the greatest player ever.
