Freshman Trent Richardson of Alabama will likely hit 6′0” by his sophomore year. He’s 220 pounds of muscle and was timed at a very quick 10.5 100 meters.

I don’t think there will ever be another Herschel though.

FYI: Dwyer was the AAAAA state champion in the 100m his junior year at Kell, so clearly, there’s no need to doubt his speed. Herschel was definitely a man amongst boys. Although he was a gifted athlete, there wasn’t a player on defense that could match his size, speed and power. Now, there are safeties that are as big as defensive lineman were in the early 80’s.

Bo and HW were special players, and I have no doubt that they still would have been extremely successful playing college football in this era, but I am not sure if anyone will ever dominate in the same fashion due to the combination of size and speed of defenders of this era.

Can we stop saying that? ..and concerning HW, who is the best college running back of all time, colleges are not looking for 6″2 4.4 220lb RBs because they are looking for 5″8 4.3 180lb RB like Barry Sanders, the best I’ve ever seen!

Tim Tebow is a slightly better Boomer Esiason or Bobby Douglass, who happens to play on a lot better team than either of them (Maryland, Kansas.) I don’t think he ranks among CFB’s best QB’s of all-time– but he is a great player and a winner. As for Herschel, he was the best of all-time!

Dwyer is probably the best back in the south right now, but he doesn’t have the vision HW had nor the speed. HW was electronically time in 10.18 for the 100 meters, at the time it world class, at 38 years old he ran a 4.28, still at 225 lb. He was a freak of nature, the size, the speed and the most important thing, his duralbility was amazing. And by the way, if he played B back in GTs offense he would average 300 yards a game.

Joe: Wrong. Dwyer has legit 4.4 forty speed. I don’t know how to compare his strength with #34, but I do know his 4.4 forty is legit. You should know this, of course, after watching last years UGA -TECH game. You know, first play of the second half. I do know that Dwyer is playing against 280-300 lb defensive lineman and #34 did not.

Wow. Twenty nine years later, and we are finally figuring out that there are no other Herschel Walkers. He is one of those unique superstar players. His records may get broken eventually, but no one will ever be like him. NO ONE. I think after twenty nine years, we can stop asking if our tailback is the next Walker. It is kind of like saying, My teacher seems like a really good teacher. Is he going to be the next Jesus? Or, My kid is good in science, but will we get another Thomas Edison. Walker is not a standard. Walker did in three years what it has taken almost thirty years to find a kid to do in four years. Yet, we tend to hold every UGA running back up to that standard. Get over it already.

Knowshon was Knowshon. Entirely different from Herschel as was Lars, Henderson, Worley, Edwards, and a bunch of others. I really would like to get another Musa, quite frankly. The guys we have now are good in there own right and will improve.

ugaaccountant, I don’t believe I said otherwise. I bleed red and black and believe Herschel was the greatest college running back ever. That said, it is a little foolish to assert that his success at our dear alma mater would have been as great if he didn’t have a great team around him. There’s nothing wrong with giving Rex Robinson, Scott Woerner, Terry Hoage, Jimmy Payne, Freddie Gilbert, and Kevin Butler their props. And don;t forget Meat Cleaver Weaver….

As to whether Buck Belue was a threat or not, I seem to recall Belue getting the ball to Lindsey Scott once during a UGA-FLA game in the fall of 1980.

But Cuz is right about every team having to prepare for Herschel. Well, every team after Tennessee, LOL! Hershel was going to take his 30-35 handoffs every game.

LOL! Tech fans comparing Dwyer’s slow, pudgy arse to Herschel Walker. I’ve heard it all now. I’ve also got more news for these nerds. Dwyer has never run a legitimate 4.4 in his entire life. You’re going to find that out when he runs in the NFL combines. Walker on the other hand was a legitimate sub 4.3 guy and I watched him run a 6.2 in the 60 yard dash in one of those NFL All Stars TV programs. He also outran Willie Gault, a known speedster a number of times, including that TV show.

Dwyer isn’t even on the same planet. Nowhere near as strong, nowhere near as fast, and nowhere near as special.

I agree with the observation that most 6ft.2 or taller and 220 and larger with speed are no longer totin the rock once they get to college, primarily because of a different offensive mind set. But one will come along as CMR tried to do it with samuel, and others will try as well.To those who have questions about the next great back at UGA you have already seen him, W. Ealey, the dude is for real speed, strength, vision, and just plain great instincts. I’m not saying that he’s another Herschel; no way! But, after Dwyer leaves, Tech has the redshirting freshman Daniel Drummond listed as a B back. He is 6′3″, 253 lbs. I think that is going to change the position from what we’ve seen with Dwyer. For comparison, the current backups are Preston Lyons 6′0, 213 and Lucas Cox 6′0, 232 (same as Dwyer). Cox is in the rotation at A back, especially in short yardage.

All five 5* RB recruits in the 08 class were over 6′.

3 of the top-4 rushers in 07 were over 6′ (Forte, Peterson, Smith).

There have been plenty of 6′ & up RBs: Peterson, McFadden, Bush, Beanie, Forte, Jacobs, Brown, Jackson, Perry, Jones, McGahee, Johnson, Deuce, Edge.

Jon: Yes, the defensive linemen are quicker and faster.A 300 lb DT today runs a 5.0 forty. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that a 218 lb RB running into a 290-300 lb linemen is different than running into a 230 lb one. The 290 to 300 lb lineman has a 60-70 lb advantage over the smaller lineman and Walker was 220 lbs.. You may not want to believe it but the players today are not only bigger, but they are also quicker and faster.

The reason there will never be another Herschel is that he put the offense on his shoulders and won the game almost singlehanded. All defenses knew he would get the ball and they still could not stop him from getting his yards. Clemson did stop him from getting in the endzone twice. He was injured the third game and was only used as a decoy. On Buck and Kincade a Ganiesville Sportswriter said that there would never be another Herschel ant that the UGA QB’s of the time were no threat. Buck had to admit that was true. Funny, but true.

Jon: Never said anything about the speed of DL with the exception of the DE position. You check the stats if you don’t believe the speed difference. It’s there and the majority of position players are significantly faster.

Mike Lum makes a good point above regarding how the Vikings were never being able to put together a good team around Herschel. Recall that the year Herschel took Trump’s dough and ran off to New Jersy, the 1984 Bulldogs (in what would have been Herschel’s senior year) went 10-1-1 without him, tying Clemson 16-16 early on and losing to the Bore Eagles 13-7 in November. In the Cotton Bowl, they slugged it out in one helluva nail-biting defensive struggle against Texas but finally prevailed 10-9.

That was a great group Herschel played with those three years. He might not have looked quite so good playing for the Sisters of Mercy, although he would’ve made the Sisters look a lot more competitive, LOL!
