Wide receiver Tai-ler Jones recently committed to Notre Dame. He said he grew up a Georgia Bulldogs’ fan. So says linebacker A.J. Johnson, who committed to Tennessee last week. Safety Daunte Carr lists “Georgia” as a school of interest on his recruiting profile but committed to Stanford this summer. Quarterback Blake Sims, a longtime Alabama commitment, says he grew up dreaming of playing for the Bulldogs.
What do all these prospects have in common?
They all live an hour’s drive west of Athens and play football for Gainesville High School. That’s the home of the Red Elephants, the No. 1-ranked team in Class AAA.
So if all these Gainesville players are so crazy about Georgia, how come none of them are headed that way?
I called Red Elephants’ coach Bruce Miller Tuesday to find out if he thought there was some kind relationship problem with UGA. Not at all, he said adamantly.
“Here’s what I think happens: I think Coach Richt is a man of such character that he doesn’t want to make a false promise to a kid and then have to come back and take it back,” Miller said. “I think that’s how we need to look at this thing. I have to be honest with you, some of these schools are jumping off and making offers unbelievably fast. I think, in Coach Richt’s case, he’s trying to do the kids right. He doesn’t want to make an offer and have to come back and rescind it. He won’t rescind it, I can tell you that. If he makes an offer he’s not going to come back and take it back. I think that says a lot about him and his program.”
The Bulldogs do not currently have any Gainesville High alums on scholarship nor any current commitments from school. But Richt is trying to change that.
Miller confirmed that Georgia’s head coach is now personally recruiting Sims and asked this week “for the chance to sit down and talk with” him and his family. And all indications are that Richt is going to get that chance.
Sims — an AJC Super 11 selection and early favorite for all-classification player of the year in the state – could play any skill position for the Bulldogs. Generally, the 6-foot-180-pound athlete projects as a defensive back or wide receiver in college. But he is primarily a quarterback for the Red Elephants and he has 1,114 yards and 16 touchdowns passing, 345 yards and 6 TDs rushing and two catches for 148 yards and 2 TDs receiving.
That Georgia didn’t go after Sims harder or earlier is perplexing. He attended the Bulldogs’ football camps every year since the ninth grade and actually has a personal relationship with Richt.
“Coach Richt has been part of Blake’s life since the ninth grade,” Sims’ father Sonny Sims said. “We have pictures of him all over the house. . . . I think Coach Richt is just a real honorable and real respectful man. And that might hurt him in this world we live in today because everybody’s so aggressive.”
Miller agrees.
“Some of these colleges are throwing out scholarship offers like their candy,” he said. “They’re like, ‘if you don’t work out we’ll just take it back.’ . . . I think they’re just very deliberate and want to make the best decisions and not hand out scholarships like candy. They’re not going to offer 25 scholarships to 130 people.”
Miller guesses that Sims will probably honor his commitment to Alabama.
“What Coach Saban told him back during the summer was, ‘You’re committed to us. Now go back and enjoy your high school senior year and when everything’s over we’ll work all this out and get you signed’,” Miller said. “I think Blake will probably stay pretty loyal to that. But you never know with high school kids. They have a different girlfriend every week.”
If Sims doesn’t change his tune, the Bulldogs could be the latest jilted suitor.

Another point of view: You’re right. My bad. I fixed that. . . . I was trying to figure out the last UGA player from Gainesville High and saw “Martrez Milner, Gainesville” in the media guide and failed to look up which high school. . . . So anybody know the last Georgia player to sign out of Gainesville High? All I can think of is Damon Evans, Cris Carpenter and Preston Ridlehuber. But surely there must have been somebody since then. . . . Lil’ help anybody?!

That’s some spin coming out of the Gainesville coach. All head coaches have to choose which kids to offer and which ones are secondary. Sims had a firm offer in hand from Alabama and decided to take it rather than waiting on an offer from Georgia that might never come. There’s certainly nothing wrong with Richt pursuing him now but to suggest that it is because Richt has such great character rather than because he had other higher priority recruits who fell through is disingenuous.

Here is the thing…..NCAA…should think if all of this offering and commiting as a Jr’s in High School is a good thing or not looking at the whole picture….Have to admire CMR when UGA does not offer sometimes as early as everyone else….then kids that don’t have an offer from UGA etc may get feelings hurt and accept at another school…..the kids need to be sure if they accept an offer that they really want to go there…..but this is not a perfect world….Anyone can make a mistake….then we get into the keep your word scenario…..A coach should tell a kid to go to the best place for the kid and go where he is going to be happy….but of course Coaches get paid to win…..so lots of things come into play in this early recruiting and commiting thing…….would rather see some rules in place that shortens the time between commiting and signign day and gives the coaches an opportunity to evaluate all Senior year players including late bloomers.

Richt is a class guy, but what is that doing for the UGA football program? Obviously very little, as we’re now falling behind in recruiting some of the state’s best talent.
Here in Gainesville the locals have been talking about these five players at GHS for more than a year – where was UGA, considering we are only an hour down the road?
But then again,I guess we are not able to judge the best available talent as well at the UGA coaching staff… rather, we just keep watching the revoving door of coaches as Mayer, Saban, Kiffin, Spurrier, etc. keep visiting Gainesville.

Chip,
Thanks for your article. I believe its okay for an 18 year old to say “I
made a mistake in making a decision which will affect the rest of my life.” If he truly wants to go to UGA, he should go. Life is too short to let a hasty decision keep him from being happy. He hasn’t signed anything yet. UGA has had athletes back out on early commitments and that’s fine. I commend you for remembering Ridlehuber as a GHS grad ( that was back in the 60’s).
I think Coach Miller was exactly right about CMR not overcommiting like some schools. I think I remember reading that Ole Miss had extended offers to 2 or 3 times the number of scholarships available last year.
That would be an interesting article for you. I would like to know how
we stack up to other schools i.e. the Vols of UT.

Agree that Richt is a “nice” guy – but he is too nice.
Notice the difference in demeanor between Richt, Meyer, Saban and Miles?
Meyer, Saban and Miles appear to be driven men. I have seen all three coaches get into their players faces when they did something stupid on the field.
Richt will pat them on the back.
Look at team discipline as a result.
Heck – look at National Titles in the past 8 years as a result.
Richt had it going – because he had a REAL SOB in Van Gorder to kick some A$$ when A$$ was needed to be kicked.
Now look at the UGA program – great recruiting classes – and now a bottom half team in the SEC. The ship is sinking.
My adivce to Richt is to “recruit” some better coaches – that are driven men.

Agree with VolsRule! Richt needs to recruit some driven coaches to coach up the talent he has.
I enjoyed watching Caoch Paul Johnson lay into his O-Lineman that forgot the count on a two point conversion…… as he was running off the field – guess who was waiting for him 10 yards on the field – CPJ, “what are you – stupid?” and the butt chewing began.
I bet you that this player will be more focussed and driven as a result.
Agree with VolsRule – UGA a sinking ship – will be that way next year as well. What is the definination of insanity – expecting different results but doing the same thing over and over again?
Richt peaked in 2005 – and has been ineffective. Similar to watching Fulmer at TENNESSEE – had it going – started to slide – and was hanging on. His later teams were not anything near his peak years.
I am convinced Richt is in the same situation – his staff is no longer affective. The results speak for themselves.

I guarantee you that BAMA, FLORIDA< TENNESSE, UGA, etc. have offered scholarships to dozens of kids that will not be able to play for these schools – because it is numbers game. So are these offers binding? The anser is NO! These schools have the right and the obligation to rescind if they want to. And the recruits have the same right and obligation to do what they need to do to get into the school of their choice.

I’m surprised at Bama Stan’s comment that CMR “peaked” in 2005. Didn’t we finish the 2007 at #2 in the country? I guess in Alabama they don’t consider any games important after the regular season and they ovviously don’t keep up with the polls after that. It’s funny to see all the fair weather dawg fans and GT,Vols, Bama, etc ready to write off the UGA program because we aren’t competing for the SEC title or Nat’l Championship. When you lose two first round NFL picks at skill positions as well as other key players, you expect a drop off. We’ll be back! Dawg fans–Quit whining. As for all you other schools, you can

Since Damon Evans and Chris Carpenter graduated, Gainesville High has not had the powerhouse program it enjoyed under Bobby Gruhn until coach Miller came to town. The real question is how many prospects have snubbed UGA? Most, if not all Gainesville’s current stars happen to play positions that are loaded for the near future at UGA. Tai-ler Jones’s dad is a Notre Dame alumni-he might want to follow in his Dad’s footsteps and I see nothing wrong with that thinking. Sims, Jones, Johnson, Carr – Have visited UGA in the double digits. Each time they visited, UGA said an offer was coming, except offer didn’t come. Meanwhile, kids are reading about every other sorry recruit from TN, FL, TX, LA, CA and every other state. After all of those recruits snubbed UGA, then they come back to these four guys, like they haven’t built relationships with other schools and coaches. Hey guys, UGA still loves you, come on play. These players symbolize the effort UGA didn’t place on them. The fruit of non-labor hurts. The sad thing, is that all 4 would have commited, if offered when they were supposed to be offered. Not when things aren’t going good, but offer when the other schools are offering, to keep pace. And if you didn’t offer earlier, because you thought there was better talent, then why make so much noise about Gainesville not being loyal to UGA. Doesn’t sound UGA was loyal to any of them, so why would they select to stay in-state. These kids selections were based on prevailing circumstances at the time. Sorry these kids’ ideas on commiting, doesn’t match up, with UGA’s slow playing of GA talent. They did the same thing to GA Tech WR – Miller, Eric Berry, Jamal Lewis, and so on. It’s a deliberate act on UGA’s part. Don’t ask for loyalty, when you haven’t given it. The roosters are coming home to crow! Karma is a mother.

Eric Berry’s father played at UT. He was never coming to UGA. Berry was the top safety in the nation and UGA wanted him badly but he was always going to UT.
And as far as these gainesville recruits go UGA doesn’t want any of them! Its so obvious. Ogletree is the #3 safety in the nation and carr is rated 44th. Da’rick Rodgers is the #2 wide receiver in the nation and jones is 16th. Sims is probably going to be a wide receiver and we are going to be pretty deep at that position. Simple Fact…you don’t know sh_t..the simple fact is. you have no clue as to what and why UGA does what they do in recruiting. Is Georgia supposed to offer Sims to come to UGA and play QB when they already have three QB’S waiting their turn? Do you really think Tai-ler Jones will start at WR with Orson Charles, Marlon Brown, King, Wooten and A.J.Green already there…I don’t think so. Recruiting is a process ….you offer schalorships where they will help you the most. CMR has a policy that when you commit to UGA regardless if you start, get hurt or end up on the scout team he will honor his scholarship commitment to you for four years. Alabama, and Florida don’t do that. If you don’t ever play a down the first three years you are there they ask you to leave to free up a scholarship for someone else. If you don’t believe me look it up..its fact. As good a coach as Meyer and Saban are they treat their players like cattle…with the exception of the starters or players that can make them look good. They could give a sh_t about evryone else on the team. They toss them aside like yesterdays trash…its a fact and can be proven. When CMR commits to you and you back to him he has your back for as long as you are in school on the team unless you commit a crime or break a team rule that warrants dismisal.I would suggest before you embarrass yourself again on this blog you get your facts straight and stop making it up as you go…you come across as an idiot.

Body was chiseled and he looked as if he could play LB but reported and practiced as a DB. Just like Carr – Sims & Jones have visited UGA several times for various camps and from what I have been told they two had great performances and stood out. So why did UGA move slow to capture these young men’s attention? I do not know, but they would have been an asset. Great students in the class room, leaders on the football field, involved in the community through volunteer work and church activities, student of the game. Each one of these kids are good at what they due at the prospective football position.

Yes I agree that Sims, Jones and Carr may not be ranked in the top 10 in the nation but Sims is a complete athlete & dangerous when the ball is in his hands – Jones one of the best route runners and play makers in the state @ WR – Carr locks down the safety position on coverages in the air or run support on the ground the kid can flat out bring it. It will be interesting to see if these 3 kids plus the other supporting cast of the Gainesville H.S. football team make it to the state championship and what their stats would look like at the end of the year. I would not be surprise if Sims, Jones and Carr’s stats stand out across all Georgia H.S. Classifications – these kids are flat out ballers at their respective positions.

Coach Richt is a man of such character, he doesn’t want to make an offer and have to come back and rescind it. He won’t rescind it, I can tell you that. If he makes an offer he’s not going to come back and take it back. I think that says a lot about him and his program.
Are we going to change any coaches?

Bruce Miller of Gainesville can say anything he wants to but the fact is Georgia has lost Gainesville. Sims and Jones could play for any team in the country and be stand out players. You can always see special athletes and these two are special. As a Gainesville resident I can tell you that Georgia missed the boat on all four Gainesville prospects. They’ve been too busy trying to embarass Florida by signing players from Florida. I don’t think the quality of players ia a major factor right now. I know it’s the poor coaching. Look at how many points have been scored on Willie’s D. Look at where we rank in the numbers. We’re unranked and fighting to even be bowl eligible for any bowl. Florida and Tech look like they will be blowouts. CMR has let the program fall like a rock. It’s not CMR’s coaching ability … it’s his friendship, loyalty and pal-z-walsy method of operation. If CMR won’t make changes, I sure hope Damon/Adams will put a fire under him.
We lost this entire season when CMR kept Willie. When you have to score over 30 points to win most games … and do it with an unproven quarterback and running back …. I guess we’re about where we should be. Just to hear the name Martinez bothers me. He’s cost the Georgia team so much. I wish he would do the right thing at the end of the season … resign and find him a nice high school job. Willie Martinez is the worst college coach I’ve ever seen … and BoBo and Fabris are not far behind. It’s time for CMR to clean house at Georgia and start over with some new blood. The program now is worse than anytime we had with Goff and Donnan. What will it take for CMR to make changes and not spin and make excuses over and over and over again.
Are we going to have any changes in coaches at the end of the year?
Ask Mark Richt

Why don’t someone from the AJC pin CMR down and ask him about the performance of his coaches. He’ll probably say, “shucks, we’ve just had some bad luck”. “I love the way Willie and BoBo are calling the plays”. “They’re my friends and I’ve got to be loyal”. “It’s not the coaching, it’s the refs, the players, the schedule, the turnovers, the injuries, the bad breaks, it’s the fans, it’s the president, it’s the economy”. It’s anything but the fact that the two coordinators can’t coach. My main complaint is not that we have lost (even though I don’t like to lose)… it’s the way we have lost (passionless, not fighting, no fire, complacent, bend but don’t break … always backpeddal from their receivers … go down at first hit … keep trying to run and run and run when AJ Green is the only consistent weapon you have. No adjustments on O or D. Same plays over and over and over and over again. We need someone with the guts at AJC not to let CMR spin and make excuses. AJC needs to put him on the hot seat and pressure him to give answers to Georgia’s problems. It’s time for changes at UGA!!!!

Hey Dawg1970
The Gators will repace Tebow with a guy who was the the Gatorade High School Player of the year his senior year.
Garrison Smith will be visiting UF for the FSU-UF game. By the time Urban and Bozo cherry pick UGA’s class there will be not much left to boast about.

Versitile athlete. Another Hines Ward? It would be good to get this guy. I believe that UGA should try to recruit Georgia first and then just cherry-pick our border states. I want players that have loyalty to the state of Ga. Players who feel bad not only for themselves when they lose, but who have to answer to Mama and Grandma and their friends.

I think it is funny that TENNESSEE can have 2 losing (5-7) seasons and a 4-loss season over the last few years,
BAMA can have a decade of bad seasons including 6-6 in Saban’s first year
FLA can have several 4-5 loss seasons (including bowls) during the Zook era and 1 of Meyer’s seasons
LSU just had a 7-5 season LAST YEAR
Auburn could be looking at 2 consecutive losing seasons
BUT when UGA finishes a consecutive #2 and #10, finishes top 10, 6 out of the last 7 and has 2 SEC titles in that time and then have ONE bad season after losing 3 huge peices early in the draft, ALL OF A SUDDEN people are saying “UGA is in decline” “UGA needs to rebuild their program” and tons of other GARBAGE
Maybe it has to do with playing 16 freshman, tons of sophomores, and very little juniors and almost no seniors against one of the toughest schedules in the country a year after losing the #1 and #12 overall picks at QB and RB…
To all of you naysayers and outsiders running down the status of UGA’s program, maybe, just maybe, UGA is re-building with young players to go on another run…GOOD GRIEF
Even Oklahoma is 3-3, Ohio St has multiple losses…Sometimes you have to be forged through the fire before you are hardend steel

Hey country bumpkin – take the UGA blinders off and join us in reality. Maybe you should join the next Real World cast and live life in present. UGA is slipping and has been for the last 2 years. You can b—- and moan all you want. Bottom line, UGA missed the boat, due to their arrogance in recruiting. Don’t forget UGA offered Sims and Jones. You say UGA is a good judge of talent, obviously they wouldn’t have offered either, if they couldn’t compete with the current roster of WR’s. Give me break. Everytime a player from GA turns down UGA, you say he wasn’t good enough any way, he couldn’t compete. Well looking at things, all of that talent at UGA, and UGA isn’t competitive. I’m not sure what Sims or Jones would gain by attedning. Those boys could go to Navy and have more wins, with better coaching. Nacy almost beat Ohio State. UGA couldn’t beat themselves in scrimmage right now. Several more losses on the horizon. Bull—-Dogs

Maybe WE OUGHT to start recruiting the local talent pool. Why? Because our so called all world “nationally recognized” players like M Stafford and No Show Moreno did nothing for UGA and all the out of state kids are not really doing much ……….yet, except for AJ Green. Hard to gauge it just yet with most of them, as most ARE Frosh. Time will tell. TIme will tell.
With a local kid and with his daddy and mama and sis and hundreds of friends in the stadium at UGA, Well, they MIGHT PLAY harder. They just might. I believe that this is true. Some kid from NC like 08’s Ellerbee or Sturdivant or Jumping Joe Cox, well, um you know the rest of that story.
I remember QB Jamie Harris that was from VA and when quit and transferred to Wake Forest and he did play in his 5th year as a sometime QB starter at WAKE or South Carolinian Carnie Norris in the early 80s that never, ever panned out. Small and slow he was. Now? See Prince Miller who is small and slow and cannot cover an old lady on a fly pattern. Another S Carolinian.
6-6 for my Dogs in 09. December had better bring us a stocking full of fired ex UGA coaches.

Some of you fans are absolutely retarded. WE ONLY HAVE SO MANY SCHOLARSHIPS TO OFFER!!!! The state of Georgia is ranked #4 in the country for D-1 football recruits. Only california, texas, and florida produce more. Texas and california have more only because they are much larger geographically. On a per capita basis Georgia is #2 behind the state of Florida. With an average of 23-24 scholarships yearly there are going to be a lot of good football players who leave the state every single year. Its just a mattter of simple mathematics. Why some of you cannot seem to comprehend this fact is mind boggling.
I got an idea that would help some of you fans pawning over these gainesville players. We could rescind some of the scholarships we have already offered to other players so we could sign the gainesville players. Richt could call up Alec Ogletree and say sorry son I know you’re the #3 rated safety in the nation but we have to drop you so we can go with the #44 ranked safety from Gainesville. Then he could call Da’rick Rodgers and say sorry son I know you’re the #2 rated receiver in the nation at 6′3″ 205lbs and you can run a 4.33 but we have decided to go with 6′ 180 pound possession receiver from Gainesville. Da’rick I know you have the chance to be special just like A.J Green but I just have my heart set on a shorter and slower kid. Would that make some of you happy? Because that is exactly what we would have to do in order to sign these other kids from Gainesville.
Another thing that some of you don’t seem to understand is that certain positions are more need in some years than others. For example, UGA signed to QB’s in last years class and zero this season. The Gainesville kids didn’t fit into the plans of Mark Richt thats the bottom line. So get the hell over it!

And to think I am a Kentucky fan that simply can compute a mathematical formula…But hey! We would love to have you Sims!!! Just doubt we have a shot. But shoot our coaches have a much more likely chance to hang around for your career than UGA!

Recruting is NOT UGAs problem. The roster is full of NFL talent and the early committments are the best in-state. No. The problem with UGA is that the SEC has become the kill or be killed college football conference under the likes of Meyer and Saban and Coach Richt is still a nice guy with great character. I’m not sure if Richt has the stomach for this type of football.

GT #7,UF #15 & UGA #21? School rankings? School Academic rankings? They all look pretty good to me. Of course. academic rankings are a bigger far than the AP Poll, but we’ll save that discussion for a different blog.
I remember the plan that Dooley & Co. came up with in the late 1970’s. Recruit the BEST high school players in GEORGIA and you can win a NC. They did, and it worked. As a matter of fact it worked real well. UGA came within 2 wins of winning 3 NC in the early part of the 80’s, using that blueprint. Miami recruited MIAMI kids in the early 80’s…and went on a run. UF and FSU, OK and Texas, USC…all are located in talent rich areas. They lock-up the best local kids then cherry pick a few standouts from out of state. It seems to me Richt started his regime based on that model but has slooowly started to drift as the Bulldogs have become more prominent and recognizable in other regions (I know, I know UGA is IRRELEVANT! That’s why their liscensing sales are in the top 3 nationally and ESPN televised theSpring Game this year…whatever). I wisg the staff would focus again on the in-state players, and dip out on occassion for a Stafford, Murray, Green, etc.
That’s my take…..Oh, and why does everyone hate the Bama guy again? Because he’s knowledgeable (did I spell that right?).

Mark Richt is a man of character, that’s why he pulled the scholarship offer to a kid on his commitment trip to Athens. Why the dogs don’t have a problem with late hits (a mile away from the play) and jaw jacking after every tackle (even when the play results in a touchdown). Why recruits are in trouble with the law and academically, before they get to athens, while on campus and after they leave.
He either supports the late hits and personal fouls and lies about it (because he thinks it’ll help the current defense or recruiting) or he’s against it and doesn’t have the b@lls to stop it.

Don’t flatter yourself with frivilous info. AJ Green is the only proven threat at WR that UGA has.. Mike Moore is average at best. Isreal Troup, where is he? Chris Durham is a beast, but sorry he got hurt this year. Marlon Brown played vs. competiton comparable to 12 year-old pop warner football – jury still out, Rontavious Wooten – is a beast – needs to play more. Tavarres King- is so inconsistent, his dropped balls negate the great plays that he makes from time to time. Da’Rick Rodgers was a nobody until four months ago. He commits to UGA, the sports writers – that work for UGA – jump on the band wagon – and now he’s a 5 star from AA Calhoun – what a joke! The wrap for the last three years – looks great in combines, never transfered to the gridiron. Let’s see if his character flaws and grades work-out at UGA. This year he is finally looking like a WR worth having. Mike Bennett – who is this? Better yet, who cares. He’ll never see the field at UGA. On top of it, you have a WR coach who publicly admits, he forgets to put Marlon Brown and Rontavious Wooten in the game vs. OK State, and states the reason why as the “Game was moving to fast, he forgot!” Wow!! So, the best WR talent UGA has seen since Bryce Hunter & Terrence Edwards and that’s the best response he can come up with. I don;t know alot about Gainesville, but when I looked the stats up from last year, Jones led the state in receptions for all classifications. Why wasn’t Rodger’s in the mix? & Bennet isn’t in the Top 50.. Jones and Sims, this year, despite not playing past the second quarter in most games, and everyone DC scheming on how to stop them, are still at the top of the leader board. If there not as good as what you have, then why doesn’t UGA move in a different direction and stop calling. Real Facts Puppy, get in the corner and bite on a bone, before I have to verbally spank you, for blind loyalty. The rest of the world seems to appreciate, what UGA can’t even understand. That’s why they are losing! If I had kids, I wld tell them to run in every direction, away from Athens. What a disaster!

CMR and GA don’t rescind scholarships? Dell McGee would disagree
UGA in ‘constant contact’ with Carver-Columbus coach
11:22 am July 27, 2009, by Chip Towers
Georgia still is not in the good graces of Carver-Columbus coach Dell McGee but it’s working on it.
McGee banned the Bulldogs from recruiting his players after a communication breakdown led to Georgia withdrawing a scholarship offer from Carver quarterback Devin Burns the very day he intended to commit to them. That was a week ago this past Saturday and McGee said he has heard from the Bulldogs often since then.
“They’ve been in contact with me on a constant basis since the incident occurred,” said McGee, who led Carver to the Class AAA state championship in 2007. “I’ve talked to Mark Richt a few times and a few other coaches as well.”
Make no mistake about it, while Georgia is prevented by NCAA rule from commenting on the situation directly, its coaching staff is contrite and is doing everything in its power to make good with the school. And it goes beyond the fact that the school produces good football players. Teams are always going to offer more scholarships than they can sign, so retractions are inevitable. But as a Georgia assistant told me, they have worked extra hard at avoiding embarrassing situations such as the one that occurred last week.
Meanwhile, it appears the incident with Burns has hurt the Bulldogs with Burns’ Carver teammate Gabriel Wright. The defensive tackle, who is one of Georgia’s top targets in 2011, told the pay site georgia.scout.com he has dropped the Bulldogs from his top spot and replaced them with Auburn. “Georgia was my leader, but I had to drop them down after what happened with my teammate Devin Burns and I will only visit them in the future if my coach lets me,” Wright told scout.com recruiting analyst Chad Simmons. “I still like them, I really like Coach [Rodney] Garner, and we will just see what happens. I just don’t want what happened to Devin to happen with me.”
Meanwhile, neither Georgia Tech nor Auburn appears interested in Burns’ services. McGee said the Yellow Jackets talked to Burns this past spring. “They’re limited on their scholarship numbers and they just didn’t know if they were going to offer or not,” he said. The Tigers aren’t going to sign a quarterback “because they have six on campus,” he said.
But Burns will definitely land on his feet. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound quarterback is still holding scholarship offers from Maryland, Vanderbilt, Miss. State, Southern Miss, UAB, Louisville and Troy and remains on the radar screen of numerous other major Division I teams.

How can anyone believe Richt had offered a mediocre QB from Carver Columbus when he hadn’t offered a better one from Gainsville? Face facts people, UGA simply doesn’t have enough scholarships to go around. We can’t offer every QB and RB in UGA that has a good year. This one in Gainsville is having a fantastic senior season, as part of a great team, and has only now become good enough to get an offer from us. I fail to see a problem there. The system is broken in that kids are offered and accepted as Juniors. I don’t have a solution, but it’s insane that kids are insulted they weren’t offered as Juniors.

Each time you reference UGA, you reference the past. Past performance doesn’t save jobs or win wars. Today’s reality, UGA is terrible! (2) My post said Green is a beast and Massaqiou was great, but before them, Hunter and Edwards were the best. UGA isn’t know for WR’s. So, to speak of how great Brown and Rodgers are doesn’t matter. Bottom line, UGA isn’t winning. BTW – the guy from rivals, is part of the sports writers/reporters I reference. Jamie Neuberg also said watch out for a lot of kids, we have never heard from again. Rodgers has received his pub based on potential, not production, let’s be honest. His soph. and junior stats are aaverage at best. Maybe this year, he’ll live up to the billing. As a UGA fan, change is needed now. Either cut dead weight, or everyone will be fired at the end of the season.

CA: That did indeed happen with Devin Burns this summer and, not to defend the Dogs, I think that’s their point. I talked to recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner after that happened and he was really upset because he said they work so hard to make sure that doesn’t happen. In contrast, a lot of programs rescind scholarship offers as a matter of routine. . . . Just to spin the story forward, Georgia has been back in good stead with Carver-Columbus since early September.

Have any of you ever seen Rodgers play? Well I have and he is a man among boys. I went to the Dalton vs. Calhoun game this year and Rodgers single handedly won the game. If Calhoun doesn’t have Rodgers then Dalton wins that game easy. He caught an 80 yard touchdown and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in that game. The reason Rodgers stats weren’t as good the previous two seasons is Calhoun didn’t have a good offensive line or QB who could throw him the ball. This year they had a QB transfer from a private school who is a D-1 recruit going to Vandy and their line is much improved. Now Rodgers is finally able to show his wares. Rivals has Rodgers ranked the #21 overall player in the nation regardless of position.

Perception can sometimes be misleading. A lot of people say that CMR is to good of a guy and is to soft. That’s his fan and media face. It’s a little different in the locker room. In his early years at UGA I saw him on the sidelines with his offensive line on one knee and he was getting all over their butts. When Dooly hired him he wasn’t sure if he was tough enough until he saw him one day at practice getting all over a player. He has two sides and we only see the good one.

LOL….Georgia, so prideful, so great under Mark Richt. Recruiting is so honorable and Marky just wants to make sure everybody is happy before he offers a cherished scholarship. The talent that is right under the noses of Rodney Garner and Co. that gets away is stunning. Marky is obsessed with Urban Meyer to the point that he isn’t minding the store that he’s paid to watch. Specifically, making sure that he puts a good product on the field that shows discipline, intelligence in schemes and at least a good effort every week even if they can’t win. I think what has the fan base so upset is that we keep hearing year after year how great the recruiting classes are but where is the beef to coin a phrase. It certainly isn’t on the offensive or defensive lines. Just look at Alabama’s lines. It’s amazing that Saban has put together great Offensive and defensive lines in the short period of time he’s been at Bama. Something Mark Richt hasn’t been able to do since he’s been in Athens with his own athletes, only the ones that Jim Donnan left int he cupboard. Yes Donnan missed a couple of his last years on offensive linemen but Marky has had 9 years to correct that problem and he hasn’t. Georgia seems to be obsessed with recruiting in Florida now and there are plenty of players in Florida but there are abundant “players” in Georgia. Where are the David Greene’s and Davey Pollacks on Georgia’s roster now? Where are the players that play with discipline and passion for the state’s flagship school? They’re going elsewhere and a whole bunch of these players are now headed down to atlanta to play for a coach that has a tough nose and a singular drive and passion to Coach his football team and not get his teeth fixed make him pretty. Football players aren’t stupid, being a good church going, mission taking person goes a long way for image but it doesn’t translate into what you’re getting paid for and that is to win games. If you recruit a kid and he does things on the field of play that hurts your team, Mark Richt’s policy is to let the boys play. Paul Johnson jerks the kid out of the game and fires him. There is no accountablility in Athens by the coach that makes millions to demand it. The ship is listing and a great coach told me one time it’s one thing to straighten out a program when you’re hire and it’s very difficult. It’s almost impossible to straighten a program out when you lose control on your own watch. We are seeing that right now and we’lll see things get worse before they get better and a new coach is hired. Good run Marky, it’s over.
