Kiffin’s antics impress Thornton, Brown, and lift Vols

Anybody who thinks Lane Kiffin’s showy antics don’t make a difference in recruiting wasn’t listening to these players after the game. They were clearly impressed by Kiffin’s idea to chopper to the game with right-hand recruiting man Ed Orgeron.

The two Tennessee coaches landed on a soccer field just west of James R. Hallford Stadium in a red helicopter as the
Star Bangled Banner played before the nationally-televised the M.L. King-Stephenson game. They flew out at the end of halftime.

“That really felt good to me because I talked to him for a minute on the phone,” said Mike Thornton, Stephenson’s star defensive tackle. “He told me he was going to come in and show off a little bit and, sure ‘nough, he did his thing. I saw him leave out and come in but that’s it.”

Stephenson led 7-0 at the half.

Thornton, considered the top uncommitted D-lineman in the state, hadn’t mentioned Tennessee among his favorites (Auburn, Georgia, Penn State) before Friday. Asked after the game if  the Vols were now in it for him, Thornton said: “Oh, yeah; oh yeah. Hopefully I can get up there for a game soon.”

Thornton and MLK tailback Mack Brown seem to have been Kiffin’s main focus, though there were close to 20 D-1 prospects on the field at Hallford Stadim.

“Yeah, he was at my school earlier,” said Brown, the state’s top-ranked tailback and a Florida commitment. “I ran into him, shook his hand.”

Asked if Kiffin was trying to get him to flip on the Gators, Brown said politely, “Yes, sir.”

Brown was actually overshadowed in the game by Stephenson’s running back, Raymond Sanders. A longtime Kentucky commitment, the somewhat small but lightning quick Sanders had 135 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a spectacular 21-yard run that will surely make some highlight reels. He also had 30 yards on three receptions.

“I had to go out there and make a statement that I’m the best back in the state,” Sanders said. “Coach has been telling me that all week that I’m the best back in the state and to go out there and show it on national TV. So I just went out there and gave it my all and my offensive line played great.”

Brown actually played pretty well, too, considering he was competing on two sore hamstrings and behind an overmatched offensive line. He managed 103 yards on 19 carries despite Thornton blowing up the middle of the line of scrimmage on most every play.

“This was my last time to get to play Stephenson so I’m going to miss that opportunity. But it was a fun game,” Brown said. “They’re real aggressive up front. They’re as good as they say they are. They’re the No. 1 defense and they deserve it.”

Thornton agreed.

“We were on a mission tonight, man,” said Thornton, who helped the Jaguars total five sacks. “Our whole game plan was to stop Mack Brown. We did what we were supposed to,  made them change up their offense and it worked.”

Thornton got a lot of help, collapsing double teams in the middle of the line and creating openings for fellow D-linemen Doral White, Malcom Strong and Miles Ashmon.

“We’ve got a great defensive line,” Thornton said. “We’ve got the best defensive line in the state. And we’re going to go to state because of this line. I’m going to stop everything in the middle and they’re going to stop everything on the outside.”

Not only did Kiffin kick UGA’s ass last week, he is raiding all the top talent in the state of Georgia too. When he is finished, Georgia will be calling him General Sherman! He will have torched the state in more ways than one! Rocky Top Tennessee…….Woooooooooo!!!!

Mission accomplished. It doesn’t mean a commitment from anybody, but if it gets players to consider UT, that’s really all you can ask. And yes, as you just read, 17-18 yr. old kids dig that approach.
At least they’re now willing to listen.

Article didn’t say specifically what they were so impressed about. That he rented a helicopter? That he showed up at the game?? What exactly was so impressive??? No if he would have parachuted into the stadium and then sang the Star Spangled Banner, THAT would have been impressive, but any big time SEC program can rent a chopper or a limo or whatever.

I wonder if Lane Kiffin has a hairy back? I know Fulmer did and did I get hot watching him jiggle onto the field. It was hard seeing him in all that orange though. Well, gotta go. At least there was some imagination, some passion, something innovative and new. At Georgia it’s same old same old same old and it’s getting old. CMR has got to make changes whether he wants to or not. Tenn. is on the rise … Alabama is on the rise … Ark is on the rise … Auburn is on the rise … Fla don’t need to rise … and where is Georiga? Unranked and struggling through a horrible season. Does it look like CMR needs to make major changes at Georgia?

smp : I’m sure the chopper was paid for by an over zealous Tennessee booster with shady ties to the Florida campus that blackmailed UGA AD Adams over the Missing Jan Kemp letters that were unsealed last week per court order but has yet to hit the news because Uga ate them thinking they were homework. Awaiting Uga’s poop to peice this story together. Stay tuned…

If Vanderbilt scores over 30 points … all the dogs will be lose and barking in Georgia. I really feel we can turn out the lights for this season … looks like the party’s over. Loses to Fla, Aub, GT and hopefully wins over KY, TT and V will give us a 6-6 break even record.
How does that sound … barely 500. Who can defend any coaches of a major program with top recruiting classes … barely 500 and unranked?

It will pay dividends for his program and his efforts. Does he care what others may consider the ‘gentlemanly’ thing to do or does he attack unmercifully like our forefathers did in order to secure this nation..? The answer is is in his approach. He is gonna build a winner by hook and/or crook and within the legal framework laid out by the NCAA. He could have sat back after the UGA game but he’s being relentless in his approach. I have no problem admitting Tennessee beat the crap out of UGA last week, but how can you say Tennessee is on the rise when they have a 3-3 record (same as UGA), and their losses have come from UCLA, Florida, and Auburn? Of those three, only Florida has proven to be a really strong team. Auburn finally got ranked last week but then lost to unranked Arkansas, the first actually decent team they faced and a team UGA beat (Going undefeated against teams such as Ball State and Louisiana Tech is no accomplishment). Not to say Auburn will not be good or is not good, just they have done nothing yet to prove themselves. This years UGA team would be undefeated if they had Auburn’s schedule. UCLA is decent at best, with losses to Stanford and Oregon. Is it possible that Tennessee is on the rise? Yes. But it is way too early to make that claim just because they beat a terrible UGA team. Until they start beating good, ranked teams, you cannot claim they are on the rise. By the way, Lane Kiffin is a classless piece of garbage. This little stunt where he so-called “showed off a bit” just proves that he is a cocky, arrogant S.O.B. He has absolutely nothing to be cocky about with a 3-3 record (and a team which will see many more losses this year).

I think we’re missing some facts! Georgia fans aren’t wanting CMR to leave. They’re not calling for CMR’s head. They’re not wanting to gut all the football program. Georgia fans are savy and intelligent. They know what’s going on. They see the games and know the stats. They just want CMR to show some guts and make the changes that are going to have to be made. They’re screaming loudly because it doesn’t seem CMR or DA or MA wants to admit there is a serious problem. We’ve fought these problems and we haven’t been heard. It’s time those in the GA football program listened. I went through a sports store and saw rack after rack of GA stuff. People said it was the worst year ever for Georgia sales. It’s not just a few upset fans … its just about the entire Bulldog nation. It’s past time for changes. To be honest, I
only expect changes and demotions … no firings or replacements. It’s not the fair weather, jump off the bandwagon who are upset … it’s the passionate true Georgia fans who are demanding changes. Go Dawgs!!!

I think CMR should not lamblast his coaches and players but should let everyone know that poor effort will not be tolerated now or ever. I just don’t think WM oR MB has the intelligence, experience and ability to coach in the SEC. If they don’t have it…they don’t have it. They have to go and loyalty, frienship and buddy-buddy times have to be over. Just because he’s your college roommate, was in your wedding, is a close personal friend never excuses poor performance and lack of ability. Come on CMR, pull the trigger … demote Willie now and fire him after the season is over. It couldn’t be any worse!!!!!!

Let's get CMR a helicopter

Can you find out how much the helicopter cost for Kiffin and who paid for it? I thought football and things at a learning institution were
played for the school, the players and the fans. This was a grand stand play but looks like Kiffin will do “whatever it takes” for Tenn to win. Wish CMR and Georgia had some of this attitude. Georgia is so laid back and so milk toast that its borning to be a UGA fan. No fire, no passion, no emtion, no imagination, no “junkyard” … what in the world is truly going on in Athens? CMR is a wonderful man and I wouldn’t trade him for a hundred Kiffins. But it is time for him to show some passion, some guts, some fire and emotions and let the Bulldog nation know he hears them and assure them that what’s going on is totally unacceptable to him and that he will make changes. We need action in Athens…not talk, spin or excuses. We’re in trouble and we’ve got to own it before we can do something about it. I agree with dawg gone … I’m a true fan and yes I am disgusted with what’s going on in Athens.

I know its the bandwagon fans that seem to bark the loudest. UGA has equal or better talent than anyone in the country (except QB, couple FR waiting), but cant seem to develop that talent. And about Kiffin, he couldn’t care less about Orgeron failing as a head coach, O can recruit his ass off and motivate me to go serve in Iraq..Vols will be back because their raiding GA high school and everywhere else. Hopefully you guys and AUburn can lock down commitments and hope they stay with us till feb, good luck rest of season, we both need it

Let Kiffen have all the GA recruits. They’re overrated anyway. Look at UGA.

Dont think the GA recruits are overrated..Hell GA puts more recruits in D1 other than the obvious CA, FLA, TX. Its what you do with them once they arrive on campus. I’ll take Eric Berry anyday, sure you would too

If a kid goes to a school because a head coach lands in a helicopter; more and likely is too dumb for college.

BigMike,
If you’re good enough you will play in the NFL no matter where you play in college. SOme players like Mack Brown know that and also know they want to win CHAMPIONSHIPS like they do in Gainesville and will continue to do so when Mack is toting the rock there.

Wonder why these assistant coaches never graciously resign when it becomes obvious that they aren’t effective. I have a great deal of admiration for Randy Sanders, UT’s offensive coordinator, for having done so under Fulmer when it was clear the offense wasn’t getting the job done.

Also, fyi, Kiffin’s so-called “antics” are fairly common west of the Mississippi. Check out a story at nytimes.com in the sports section.

If Thornton is impressed by something as small as that, he will fit right in at TN, .500 every season, with UGA being the “Big Game”! Whoopty Doooooo.

smp….the helicopter was paid for out of CIA Blak Op funds. A secret account entrusted to only one person. No one knows his name but they say he lives in Vermont. The helicoptor was painted from black to red for this occasion. This message will self-destruct in about an hour or so. (here is where I must give my wife the secret handshake and kill my dog for reading this post) Paddy OUT!

I heard after the FL game Kiffin called up all of the FL commitments. I wonder if he did the same with all of the GA commitments. This guy is just trying to harass all the teams in the SEC I hope TN loses all of it’s remaining games. You just know sooner or later things are going to happen in regards to recruiting and no doubt the opposing teams will look for every opportunity to turn him in if he is playing it loose like he and Orgeron did at Southern Cal.

Does the AJC have a school girl crush on Lane Kiffin? Which county fair did Kiffin borrow that helicopter from? He still seems very desperate to me. It’s kind of like fixing up the outside of a house that has a termite infestation. Yes, UT beat UGA. He will have that program on probation within 5 years. UT has a great tradition. It doesn’t need all this silly stuff to market its program. Change Kiffin’s diaper and send in back home in his cheap and corny ride. He wants all the attention on him. On a night to honor Eric Berry, he diverts it to him. That tells you a lot about him. He is a selfish brat.
