As it turns out, erecting billboards was just Phase One of Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin's plans to lay siege to Atlanta.
Here in Georgia, all the talk after this past Saturday’s 45-19 whipping at the hands of Tennessee centered around what’s wrong with the Bulldogs’ defense and whether a change of coordinators was the only way to fix it. But back up on Rocky Top the story of the game was what the Vols’ victory might do for their recruiting.
Tennessee, as most folks are aware, doesn’t produce much in the way of four- and five-star recruiting prospects. Georgia, as we all know, produces a lot. So shortly after Saturday’s game, the Vols’ brash young coach Lane Kiffin effectively declared our fair state a war zone.
“I know there are a lot of great teams in this conference,” Kiffin told reporters. “But I told [the team], to me, this is the biggest matchup, Georgia. Because of what we do recruiting, for this staff, this is the biggest matchup.”
That, my friends, is drawing a line in the Georgia red clay.
Kiffin was reportedly even more pointed with his players in the celebratory postgame locker room.
“He basically made a promise to us that we wouldn’t lose to them anymore, forever or until he leaves,” All-America safety and Atlanta native Eric Berry said. “He’s not going to let Georgia beat us.”
That certainly put a bug in the ear of the Tennessee media. John Adams, the respected veteran columnist of the Knoxville News-Sentinel, wrote about the potential recruiting impact of the win not just in Georgia but across to country. And ESPN’s SEC blogger Chris Low, who lives in Knoxville, weighed in on the recruiting theme in his Sunday column. And on and on it has been repeated.
Give Kiffin this: It is a proven formula for the Vols. Lest we forget, it was with considerable contributions from Atlantans Jamal Lewis, Cosey Coleman and Deon Grant that UT won the 1998 national championship.
Probably the most important thing Georgia has done in the past decade, between Jim Donnan, Rodney Garner and Mark Richt, is reestablish a recruiting stronghold in metro Atlanta and at least dam to a trickle the flow of talent 3 1/2 hours north to Knoxville. Kiffin was subtle at first, having billboards erected around Atlanta. Now he has publically declared he intends to blow up said dam.
To date, that hasn’t happened. Kiffin currently has commitments from two of our citizens: Super 11 wide receiver Markieth Ambles of McDonough-Henry County and middle linebacker Michael Taylor of Atlanta-Westlake. But the present prize the Vols are battling Georgia for is 6-foot-6, 300-pound offensive tackle JaWuan James of North Gwinnett High in Suwanee. The former Alabama commitment just happened to be in attendance as UT’s official guest at Saturday’s game in Knoxville. He spent the previous two weekends in Athens. James is about feel what it’s like to be the rope in a game of tug of war.
My old buddy Jimmy Hyams called me Monday and asked me come on his Knoxville radio show (WNML-AM) Monday afternoon to “talk about the fallout of Georgia’s loss to Tennessee.” I did and he asked if I thought one game like that one could turn the tide against the Bulldogs.
No, I told him, I thought Kiffin was a little premature planting his Big Orange flag atop Stone Mountain based on one victory. But string several together like Phil Fulmer and the Vols did in the 1990s and the Dogs could be in trouble.

We also have a commitment from JC Copeland, a great DE prospect. Georgia is to be commended for the high level of HS football down here. It’s easy to see why this place is on Kiffin’s agenda. There are plenty of great prospects to go around. We’re just trying to get all the best ones we can…just like all the other schools that invade the state.

I guess Kiffin isn’t allowed to talk to his players anymore without Georgia people trying to gin up a phony controversy. Kiffin didn’t exactly go on Sports Center and say his team is never going to lose to Georgia again. He said it to his team in the locker room. In private. He said it as a motivational tool, and apparently it worked really, really well. Get over your phony outrage, Georgia fans.

He can sign 20 + a year. Georgia produces about 100 “top notch” Div1 players a year and out out those, there are 15-20 that EVERY school wants. He will pick off one here and there, so will Auburn, Bama, Florida etc. We have 6 commits from Florida I believe for next year. Georgia may be loaded at one position, say WR, get one or two commits and let the other 4 or 5 prospects, who we don’t offer, go elsewhere. So, it’s RED MEAT for his fan base. That’s all.

Comp-Lane isn’t going to do anything but make two mediocre (UT and UGA) worse. He’s going to dilute the talent going to UGA and pickup just enough to win 8 games a year at UT. Either way, Florida is still kicking both your as*es. I don’t see a Florida loss to UT of UGA any time soon. Comp-Lane isn’t going to be singing Rotten Crotch all night long for a long time.

While the loss to U.T. on Saturday sucked beyond description, both teams now sit at 3-3 with a lot of football left to be played. Let’s wait and see where each team stands at the end of the year, what kind of bowl bid (if any) they might get, and where they are to be found (if at all) in the final polls. I think that will weigh far more on the minds of potential recruits than the inexplicable come-apart that UGA suffered last Saturday. Most folks have caught on by now that CLK is good for a sound byte a day. This one just happend to come at our expense. GO DAWGS!!

Face it mutts – Kiffin and co. whooped your tails on Saturday and the Vols have, once again, embarrassed your program to the state of sadness. You’re already calling for coaches to be fired. Vols win for the third time in four years, once again, in grand fashion and now Tennessee’s domination of your stale program begins. And if I were you, I wouldn’t be too worried about what Kiffin’s doing. You have no control over that. You should start trying to figure out why your football program has never EVER lived up to its potential.

Kiffin is accomplishing what he set out to do…get in people’s heads and get them talking. All of you who pretend to think Kiffin is irrelevant are on here whining about him. If he is nothing, why are you even spending time coming up with creative posts to mock him? Clearly the man is much smarter than you are because he got you spending your free time talking about him on a blog. UF, UA, and UGA fans are all on here whimpering and whining about Lane. And it is accomplishing what Lane wants – earned media (that means free attention for those native Georgians) that gets put on ESPN and talk in the blogosphere. Recruits are noticing and the team is rebuilding. A lousy team held UF to 23 points. A lousy QB put 4 touchdowns on UGA. When the rebuilding finishes, this little ol’ UT will retake the SEC.
As for UGA, how long does it take them to win a national title? Richt is the new Fulmer.

Years ago Clempson, Awbarn, Tennysee, and others built strong programs off of Georgia recruits….Richt stemmed the tide for a few years, but I can see the cracks in the dam beginning to appear again.
The primary reason for the coming exodus of talent leaving the state will be the apparent decline of the football program at UGA.

I don’t know why these GT people think they have accomplished anything. Let’s face it they have not beat a top 20 team this year – in fact they had their stinger handed to them by the only one they played. They have beat Jacksonville ST (Division 2), Clemson, North Carolina, Mississippi State, and Florida State. If you throw out Jacksonville State’s record 4-2(who Miss St also beat) then you are left with a 10 – 13 record of the div. 1 teams they have beat. Throw in the fact that North Carolina accounts for four of those wins against teams like Citidel, Connecticut, Ga Southern, E. Carolina then it really gets ugly. Let’s face it GT is still a joke and will always be a joke. If UGA had played that schedule no one would be talking about UGA having problems. If GT had to play the schedule that UGA has they would be lucky to be 1-5 and honestly I don’t know if they could have beat Arizona St. UGA has played 3 teams that are currently ranked in the top 25 and actually beat a team ranked in the top 25. Their opponents combined record is 23-11. The difference between UGA and GT is UGA is not satisfied with their current record against quality teams where GT would be thrilled if in the same situation. So go back to your forum GT nerds and don’t come back until you actually beat a decent team this year.

I live in Tennessee and on every level of social economics it is an absolute joke. Gt4ever and all you other clowns on here dissing Kiffin –
I would concentrate on your own programs (UGA and GaTech), which are hardly in great shapes. Kiffin is shaking things up in Knoxville, he’s a great coach, motivator and recruiter and he’s going to beat you like a drum for years to come. The coach you need to worry about today is Richt – a great guy but sorely lacking in coaching abilities.

Tennessee has the second lowest number of distinct surnames per capita, just ahead of West Virginia. That could suggest some, ahem, genetic diversity issues.

kerryb – we don’t give a &%$^% who you root for –
Coach Kiffin is taking the Tennessee team back to greatness and leaving the likes of the Dawgs behind. Get used to it. The fact that Georgia fans don’t like Kiffin is great – he’s not in the game for opposing teams to like him. We love him in Big Orange Country and he’s got the VOLS headed in the right direction – toward SEC and NC championships in a couple of years. Get used to it.

Paul, I am not really worried about CPJ I have confidence in his ability. As a Tech fan, CLK or CMR are not my concerns either. What I have found from the UGA fans on these blogs is they truly love to trash programs they are concerned about. You beat them and they come out of the woodwork telling you just how bad you are and just wait till next year. I guess it is to be expected.

poke fun at everything about Tenn., you need to look inward. You all seem to obsessed w/ Lane and the Vols when your “dominance” as the #2 team in the east is coming to an end. Yes I know UT had that title before you, but remember we also have a NC in the BCS era…..scoreboard !!!

After that blow out would you blame Kiffin for starting a recruiting war?

Paul: I guess we haven’t seen the real Lane Kiffin yet. Yeah, Richt is a guy I’d really like to hang around and sing folk songs with. I’d have to be pretty darned drunk first, though. I bet I could beat him at electric football, too.

Tennessee has the best position coaches and coordinators. They know how to turn a prospect into an NFL draft pick. What defensive lineman would choose to play for Garner/Martinez over Ogeron/Monte Kiffin? One that just loves Georgia or one that’s not too smart. Come on up to Tennessee men, the party is just getting started. Tennessee has been way down and we still have won 3 of the last 4 against UGA.

While UT and UGA are tugging back and forth on a recruit, we at GT will just slip up and cut the rope and recruit him over to GT. That is if he can add 2 and 2.

Paul You should be worried about Lane Kiffin. He spent almost a year in the Oakland insane asylum with Al Davis.

Did we all forget that the 3 star athletes of last years team (Massaqui, Stafford and Moreno) were not even from Georgia? Don’t worry dog fans, have a little faith. You can’t lose as much talent as we did an expect to win 10+ games the following year. Patience is a virtue. Just for a little dramatic though – Kiffin is a retard. Maybe his dad could teach him some manners….. Hate to say a bunch of stuff only to have it remembered later down the line as a mistake…..

Uh Laughing at GT nerds, I believe that Clemson, NC, and FlaSt were all in the top twenty at the start of the season As far as comparing schedules, I believe at the end of the year, you are gonna feel bad about who you scheduled. We can’t help it if you thought you were sooooo great as usual, and set up your schedule (thinking you could compete with those teams … HA!).

Welcome to the war, Georgia! Kiffin declared war on Gator Nation as soon as he stepped on the UT campus and we all know THAT story well. Also, after Tennessee’s “moral victory” in the Swamp, otherwise known as a big fat “L”, he and his staff made a point of calling every UF verbal commitment with their spew. When Solomon Patton (WR commit from Alabama) told Urban about the numerous calls he got, Urban cooly told Solomon just to say “tell him Urban says hello” the next time he called. He got Matt Elam to visit up there but Urban put the kaabash on that and Matt came to his senses. He’s trying to snag Mack Brown but I think Mack wants to win championships. From what I understand, Urbans got a good counter plan for ol lyin’ Lane and Mr Meat Market himself, “Coach” O. That little punk has picked the wrong fight…

I hear Meyer is going around to all the high schools in the southeast showing recruits naked pictures of Tebow. This should be some kind of NCAA recruiting violation.
