By all accounts, the Georgia Bulldogs will have three official visitors in Athens for the LSU game this weekend. Just as important, the Bulldogs will have dozens of unofficial visitors in town for the nationally-televised SEC game.
It is, coach Mark Richt acknowledged, probably the biggest recruiting weekend the Bulldogs will have this fall.
“Oh it will be big,” Richt told me this week. “I don’t know what I can say about it really. About all we can do is acknowledge who we’re recruiting. But it’ll be the most [recruits in number] this year.”
Actually it was going to be even bigger at one point. Scheduled to be in town on official visits are three elite prospects from Florida: WR Chris Dunkley of Pahokee, CB/WR Terrence Mitchell of Tampa and CB Cody Riggs of Ft. Lauderdale. All three are rated as 4-star recruits and have firm offers to sign with the Bulldogs in the Class of 2010.
Originally Georgia had hoped to also have linebackers Jeff Luc and Deon Rogers of Port St. Lucie in the house. Luc is rated as the No. 1 linebacker in the nation and Rogers, his teammate at Treasure Coast High, is already committed to the Bulldogs. But they have decided to come instead on Nov. 14th, the weekend of the Bulldogs’ game against Auburn.
The Orlando Sentinel has reported all week that WR Kenny Shaw of Orlando is making his first official visit to Georgia this weekend. But coach Dave Salapa confirmed to me this morning that Shaw has also decided to visit on Nov. 14.
Here’s a brief synopsis on the three recruits that will be campus:
In the meantime, dozens of unofficial visitors are expected at the game, including several of the top uncommitted senior prospects such as North Gwinnett offensive tackle JaWuan James and Stephenson defensive tackle Mike Thornton.
Coming here at 1 p.m. today, Georgia’s Richt and Georgia Tech recruiting coordinator Giff Smith talk about the importance of official visits in modern-day recruiting.

I think it shows a lot that Juwuan James is coming back for his second “uv” in a row. plus he’s taking his official to knoxville next weekend for their game with us. i really think we can land this kid. anytime a kid pays his own way its good, when they want to do it in 2 consecutive weeks AND plan an official as well, that has to be good news. -Go Dawgs

Is it just me, or are these guys getting shorter? Dang we need some height on this team, especially in that defensive backfield and wide receiver area.

Personally, I’d rather have dexterity and ball skills than height. You could stick our power forward from the basketball team out there and watch him get burned again and again. A short cover guy with speed can still force the QB to make a perfect throw to beat him. Tim Jennings comes to mind.

Can the Defensive prospects bring their Def Coach with them Chip?
Maybe they can lend Willie Lump-Lump some tips on how to at least keep the talent where it is when the kid arrives at UGA.

If Jeff Luc commited to UGA Urban Meyer would pout until this time next year – even though Florida has 4 and 5 star LB’s 3 deep already.

After Tebow leaves, will Mark Richt be content going back to losing close games to Florida with just as good talent. I mean like he let Ron Zook do to us?

How about Maurice Hayes the JUCO DL? Any idea if he is leaning to UGA and if he can get into school? With Owens, Weston, and Atkins all graduating at the DL spot… seems like we could really use a big body who is ready to play. I know we have some very good young talent with Jones and Tyson, but seems like we could really use Hayes next year.

Chip, is there any chance for a change at DC for this year? How about next year? How much pressure will have to be brought to bear before CMR takes some action? Do you feel as a sports writer that Willie has performed well enough to continue to be Georgia’s DC? Haven’t most Georgia fans lost confidence in him as a DC and want CMR to pull the trigger on him? Do you feel CMR is losing a lot of credibility with the Bulldog nation with what seems like acceptance of poor performance because of frienship and loyalty. Does CMR’s lack of action regarding Willie come with a great cost to the football program? Do you think it’s time to “FIRE WILLIE NOW!!!!!!”? Please let us know your feelings about WM’s future as DC at Georgia.

If you listen to Richt talk in interviews he tends to praise the defense overall. He has always supported Willie 100%. Willie will be at GA for a very long time.
