Georgia focusing hard on 10 remaining 5-star prospects

Georgia has been at 18 commitments and holding for quite some time now and likely won’t have room to sign more than 22 or 23 players when National Signing Day rolls around in February. That has afforded the Bulldogs the luxury of being choosy with its remaining scholarships.

Consequently, Georgia has been able to focus the majority of their recruiting efforts on the pursuit of the best of the best among remaining uncommitted prospects across the country. Currently the Bulldogs are “in the mix” with 10 recruits that command a five-star ranking from

They are:

  • RB Marcus Lattimore, Duncan, S.C.
  • DE Jackson Jeffcoat, Plano, Texas
  • LB Jeff Luc, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
  • DE Ronald Powell, Moreno Valley, Calif.
  • LB Jordan Hicks, West Chester, Ohio
  • CB Lamarcus Joyner, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
  • WR Christian Green, Tampa, Fla.
  • DE Corey Lemonier, Hialeah, Fla.
  • WR Chris Dunkley, Pahokee, Fla.
  • DE Wayne Dorsey, Perkinson, Miss. (JUCO).

It’s conceivable that Georgia could get none of these players. All of them still list seven to 10 “favorites” among their schools of interest. And those schools they list are for the most part “the usual suspects”  — Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas, USC, among others.

The Bulldogs have dozens of other offers out to four-star and three-star prospects. But if you knew they could sign just one of these five-star recruits, which one would it be? All of them fall in the category “long shot” but which would you say is the most likely to end up in Athens?

The title of this article should be UGA trails on ten remaining 5 star targets. UGA has no chance at any of these kids, and they will be lucky to hang on to the commitments they already have with the pathetic product they put on the playing field. The only positive with their play, is that maybe these kids can see that they can start as true freshman on this team. All the recruiters from other schools will use UGA’S lack of coaching and coaching turnover next year to scare recruits away. So not only is Martinez, and Fabris or whatever the hell his name is killing UGA on the field this year, but their pathetic coaching or lack of it, will hurt UGA in the years to come. Too bad Richt doesn’t realize this, because not only is UGA getting passed by Tenn. this year, but S.Carolina will pass them next year as well. Richt needs to go, he has proven that he can’t make head coaching decisions, or he refuses to make them, either way, this program is going in the wrong direction, and it has been for the past 2 years. And to make matters worst, Ga.Tech has now caught up with uga instate in recruiting, and passed UGA on the field. It will take 3 or 4 years for this thing to get turned around after the mess that RIcht has allowed his buddies to create at UGA. When you have to play catchup to Meyer, Saban, and now as bad as it sounds Kiffin, in recruiting, you are in BIG trouble. THe 5 stars are looking like this: Luc, Powell, Dunkley, and Hicks all to Florida. Need i say more. Richt and his coaches can forget ever catching up to Florida.

There are 4 DE prospects on that list. If playing a lot as a freshman means anything to them, Georgia has a shot..We are in desperate need of first rate talent at the DE slot..any one of these 4 could probably help us right now…for sure they would be in the mix next fall.

I agree that we need DE help right away. We are thin at that position already, and I expect the starting DE jobs to be up for grabs after this season.

I think it’s likely that Martinez will be reassigned, not fired, by the end of the year. Richt would never fire anyone, and it will allow Martinez some time to save face and shop for another DC position at a mid-tier program. However, if Martinez is fired, you can expect numerous prospects to back out of their commitment and others to take UGA off their list of choices. Unless of course, we bring in a top tier DC from the NFL or established BCS program to generate buzz.

you are all retarded, and this is just another example of lazy journalism. UGA already has 5-DE’s,
* RB Marcus Lattimore, Duncan, S.C.
* LB Jeff Luc, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
* LB Jordan Hicks, West Chester, Ohio
* WR Christian Green, Tampa, Fla.
* WR Chris Dunkley, Pahokee, Fla.

UGA has a remote shot at these five, but this just shows how horrible and fan-recruit friendly has become. How many prospects do they need to give 5-star status to? Way too many it seems. And where is the original story here? Just linking, spinning, and asking for our opinion of and stories and rankings is lazy, even if you do not have the time to call players not at Stephenson, Tucker, or Grayson.

How about you make your own list of prospects for next year, without even mentioning Scout or Rivals?

I will even give you a head start:

Callaway RB Quan Bray
Carver-Columbus RB Isaiah Crowell
Dalton OT Watts Dantzler
Thomas County Central DE Ray Drew
Gainesville MLB/DE A.J. Johnson
Kell S Brian Randolph
Valdosta TE Jay Rome
North Gwinnett QB/WR C.J. Uzomah
Tucker MLB/DE James Vaughters
Carver-Columbus DT Gabe Wright

Get these 10 for a story, and you have a week of content right there!

Why all the DE’s? Didn’t we get like 4 great DE commits already?

September 22nd, 2009
10:14 am

Landing any one of these recruits would be great but I seriously doubt UGA will get any one of them. Most will sign w/other schools that have either former pro coaches on their staff or coaches w/team stats that rank amongst the nations best. Unless UGA hires a proven D cordinator and assistants they’ll always lose these blue chips to the teams that already have the great minds on their staff.

The UGA coaches must really not think much of the high school kids and coaches in the state of Georgia…not a single kid in their “10 Most Wanted List” from our state?
Keep up the hard work GHSA coaches and players…obviously the UGA coaches do not think you are working hard enough!!

Does it really matter? What have we accomplished with all the four and five star recruits that have come before them??? We’d be better off buying a few cars and just giving it to the five star recruits and give their families a new home! (It worked for Hershel and we at least got a championship for the cost!!!)

Well put ,who cares. For years coaching staff underachieved and was accepted now the trickle affect will be felt. Who in their right mind would want their 5-star child’s NFL future in these misfits hand. Top five recruiting status will be a thing of the past at UGA unless something drastic happens; see it already ” shirtless man in sun glasses arrested in Athens news at 11″.

who cares, your a bandwagon fan and its pretty obvious you have no clue what you are talking about. Dude your head is so far up your azz its not even funny. You sound like a complete moron. Tech has caught up with UGA in in-state recruiting? Are you serious? UGA has 5 of the top ten players in GA already committed. Richt needs to go? yeah lets fire the coach that has led us to 3 sec champ games and the most wins any coach has had in their first nine years. Next time you have a thought, just let it go, moron. I’ve never heard so many fans b*tch about two wins in my life. Yes the D looked bad at times but go back and watch the replay of the game and you will see some positives. I dont know who’s counting our sacks from the ark game, but I counted at least four, take away one for a holding call. Its not all WM’s fault, our players still have to excute. Its funny when you see a DB get burned, you guys automatically think its WM’s fault. PLAYERS HAVE TO EXCUTE SOME TIMES!! Oh and if yall are going to whine about the penalities, blame the O-line for last game because they had the majority of them.

I think 2 of the DE’s we’ve signed will end up at DT: Fields and either Burrows or Butler.

1. Ronald Powell
2. Luc
3. Lattimore
4. Jeffcoat
5. Dorsey

Who cares: Apparently you do, hence the lengthy diatribe you wrote. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. . . .

AJC Fan: Sorry you see this as lazy journalism. You’ll be shocked to know I disagree. Obviously you’re an astute observer of recruiting and this blog in particular. I’ll just say this: There are still five months to go until National Signing Day. I write a new blog at least three times a day. I appreciate your suggestions on the 2011 prospects and I will get around to all of them eventually. For now we’re going to stay a little more focused on 2010. Thanks again for the suggestions. . . .

Best odds out of these? I’d say Lattimore and Luc at this point, only because I know both intend to make official visits. Not sure about many of the others but I have calls into most. Stay tuned for updates!

We already have about five DE’s committed already, so we probably won’t get another DE. I seriously doubt that we’ll get any of the ten, since they’re all out-of-state. It wouldn’t hurt to get a back of Lattimore’s caliber. I also wouldn’t mind if we got another defensive tackle, like Jeff Whitaker of Warner Robins.

Our positions of need are
1) a head coach that cares more about winning than he does about trying to look like hes to cool for school (hair club for men syndrome)
2) a defense any defense

Jeff Luc is like 6 foot Rennie Curran. The two of them together next year would be pretty special. Luc and Jeffcoat are the only real transcendent talents on this board, so I’d go with one of them.

Montgomery Burns- You bring a valid statement to the table: Kiffin, Strong or W.Martinez, but you forgot one little fact in the last 2 years Martinez not Strong has had more talent go to the NFL. He has the talent, but his bend but don’t break attitude is slowly doing just that. Breaking! His lack of bliss packages, along with his conservative play calling is killing the Dawgs year end and out. But CMR is content with it and he knows he has job security, maybe if A.D. Evans takes charge and makes the change it will send a message to all on the staff.

Lattimore is not going to Tenn. They have the #1 recruit in the nation last year playing RB and he is a freshman. He is not going to Florida because of the spread offense where he would be utilized more as a blocker than runner and Florida already has the #4 ranked RB committed – Mack Brown. That leaves Florida State, Auburn, LSU, and UGA in my opinion. He has backed off of South Carolina and Clemson because they are faultering programs that will likely be changing coaches in the next year or two.

September 22nd, 2009
3:00 pm

Heh Charlotte Dog – Burrows and Butler are DE’s – fast and not big enough to ever be DT’s. Butler could possibly play inside LB but that would be a project as he has never played the position.

Dawgs need to concentrate on in state DT’s – Whitacker and Thornton since they have 3 DT’s graduating. They also need another top flight CB – maybe Fulton.

Chip, the point is, you are NOT in tune to what UGA is currently recruiting. In fact, you did an update today on a prospect UGA has not talked to since the spring. As we can all tell, you check the subscription based-services for your content, and you could save yourself some time and figure out who UGA/GT is after just by checking who they have been in contact with recently.

They want 1 WR, 1 DT, 1 OT and preferably a top tier CB,RB, or LB to finish out.

Jawuan James and Mike Thornton are the top priorities, so just stay on them please, and you will have exceeded the already low expectations set forth for you by the AJC.

After the VOLS whip puppy butt this year, georgia won’t even be in the top 10 rankings for 2010! Marlon Brown will see what he missed out on being a part of. 1) LB Jeff Luc, Port St. Lucie, Fla. – The most NFL ready linebacker I have EVER SEEN! He is an absolute BEAST! (I’m afraid he’s going to FSU though)

2) RB Marcus Lattimore, Duncan, S.C. – this guy could be just as good if not better than KNOWSHON!… yes i said it

3) DE Jackson Jeffcoat, Plano, Texas – This guy is a BEAST! I don’t think Georgia has a shot at him honestly… I think he’ll be a Longhorn

4) WR Chris Dunkley, Pahokee, Fla. – Unbelievable athlete. We think Branden Smith is a playmaker with the ball in his hands, this guy could be the next Percy Harvin! (Unfortunately I think he’s going to be a gator as well)

5) DE Corey Lemonier, Hialeah, Fla. – Prototype size and speed. I just read that interview with his head coach… GET ON IT DAWGS!

6) WR Christian Green, Tampa, Fla. – Playmaker at wide receiver. Georgia can never get enough of those!

•LB Jordan Hicks, West Chester, Ohio – Would be great but I believe he’s Ohio State-bound.

•CB Lamarcus Joyner, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. – (See Jordan Hicks)

First of all Willie Martinez is NOT THE Defensive Co-ordinator, he is CO-Defensive Co-ordinator.Shares the job with John Jancek.

As to who else the Dawgs will get (nobody is SIGNED yet, signing day isn’t until Feb.)

CB – in better position with Cody Riggs and John Fulton than Joyner, Grimes could be late offer
WR – Green and Dunkley are longshots, Adams possible
RB – Lattimore is possible maybe 15% chance, so too is Brown, don’t feel we get either
OT -hope to get James who is an early enrollee, MUST have one more OT or depth real problem
LB – best bet is Fortt from Conn, he made an official for S Car, likes the school, program, etc
DT – best chance appears to be M Thornton
DE – hope we can find one in a JUCO, no shot at Jeffcoat, need someone who can enroll in Jan and is physically ready to play.

Georgia will not get these three players. It will come down to these teams, I believe, based on what I have been reading and hearing.

Powell – Florida or USC, with a lean to Florida right now. Loved his visit during the Tennessee game.

Luc – Florida or FSU. Could go either way. Luc also loved his visit during the Tennessee game and has established a great relationship with Charlie Strong (which could mean he goes elsewhere if Strong gets a HC postion).

Dunkley – Florida or FSU. He has got to love Florida after visiting this weekend and seeing first hand the WR need.
